One of two airports that serve the Cabo Mexico general area, Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) serves as the main commercial gateway to the region. It offers more than 25 direct flights to US cities, and is served by all the major US airlines. My wife and I took a 2 hour round-trip direct flight from LAX on Delta, and found the airport to be spacious and well-staffed, though a little difficult for drivers because of the major road construction in the area.
Located about 42 km from downtown Cabos San Lucas, SJD initially opened in 1977, but started to become what it is today in 1997, with one modern terminal, serving both international and domestic flights. This corresponded to the growing popularity of the region for tourists during that time. In 2002, Terminal 2 was added primarily for international flights. That's the terminal we used for our trip, and found it to be as modern as any non-metropolitan airport we have used. This included efficient check-in and security processes, spacious gates with common modern seating, jet bridges used throughout, and very good climate control inside.
Upon arrival, old form custom forms were handed out and various stand-up desks were provided along the way to customs. Immigration was quick, requiring a self-serve passport scan (no direct face to face interview). The airport has good free wi-fi, just requiring acceptance of terms (no PII needed).
The parking lot connected to the terminal is where shuttles pick you up. You do need to walk through a gauntlet of time share hawkers. We had been warned via an email from our hotel not to stop inside the airport, but got fooled. They are good at identifying newbies and routing them to the actual sellers. We actually found our rep to be friendly and not too pushy. We used a one-way private shuttle to our resort, costing about $95 USD for the two of us.
On our way back, we took an Uber from near Cabo San Lucas: it was quite a bit cheaper (~$45) that our shuttle, even though a longer distance. It dropped us off right at departures. Going through passport control (one scan of passport) and security (one line that fans into multiple scanners) was very quick. At this time, shoes no longer need to taken off, but things like removed belts, taken out laptops, and emptying your pockets still apply.
There is a large food court in Terminal 2 with many US style fast food restaurants. One must pass through a large duty-free shop to make your way from security to the terminal gates. A pharmacy, Corona store, and Starbucks coffee are other things we noticed.
We spent some time at the one lounge at the airport, and boarded about 15 minutes late. It wasn't a full flight, allowing us to be upgraded to First. The flight to LA is a little under 2 hours flight time, but they still served us lunch and it was good. It was a nice way to leave Cabo from our short trip.
