The Best Pupusas In Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Too often, the most memorable parts of a pupusa are the gooey beans and the cheese burning the roof of your mouth. Not at Los Cheros. This strip mall pupusería in Gardena makes plump masa cakes with dark grill marks. Even after a hot sear, these remain soft and doughy when you pinch off a piece with your fingertips. And if you’re a dairy freak, you’ll appreciate the copious amount of salty cheese. We like to balance it out with spinach or stewed squash." - sylvio martins, brant cox, nikko duren

Google
The best pupusas in town! Now please be aware- their is a long wait specially during lunch time so I recommend calling ahead about 45mins to 1 hour to place your order during the busy times. (Please note, the picture is of a cheese pupusa that I added a carnita taco from El Antonitos- I definetely recommend the combo lol)

Juan T.

Google
Food is good, not sure if it’s worth the wait. They just have orders sitting everywhere no communication. The website says Order Online and Skip the Line still waited an hour in line and then got told “ 5 more minutes “. Not only that I ordered something that wasn’t available they changed it to a different item and still charged me the difference of what I first ordered. Be ready to wait an hour in line to put your order in, be ready to wait and 45 minutes to get your food. Would like my $2.50 or tamal de elote.

Google
I have never had Salvadorian food before and my boyfriend recommended that I try this place for my first time. He works not far from here and has come for their pupusas on a few occasions. The place is very small, not much seating but it's a nice little spot to have some good food. We had ordered the plantain with the beans and crema and got that with the bun instead of the tortilla, and also had ordered a couple of cheese pupusas with the loroco, it was so good. The pupusas were made just perfect. Perfect amount of cheese, so soft and melted in your mouth. The dish with the plantains was so good too, reminded me of eating some good home comfort food. I see why he keeps coming back.

Google
Small restaurant but one of the best pupusas I've had in l.a... Definitely coming back.

Google
This place is wow!! The best of the best in every ways, exelent service, super friendly peoples, and clean clean place, the food is just delicious prepared by authentic Salvadorean cookers, I have been in many restaurants to try the popusas and finally I found the place I invited to everyone to give a try and you will never have to go to another place because this is the place. Thank you guys keep up your great work.

Orsi F.

Google
Calling to place an order is recommended, but you still have to make the line to pay and pick-up, it would be great if they let you pass the line to pay, because you already placed the order and to make it faster

Google
First and last time here pupusas were mostly dough they were stingy with the meat for the price was expecting a little more flavor and meat. Also took forever to get the food had to remind them had me thinking they forgot to submit my order.

Google
First time trying out this restaurant. Found out about this little gem from instagram. The service is great. Arrived close to closing, so there was a decent amount of parking. Parking is most likely full during the day. This location, from what I saw, only has two tables and three stools facing the window. Mostly takeout, I assume, since not enough dining space. The pupusas are ridiculously delicious. They don't stinge on the fillings. I tried to show in one of my pictures just how much filling they have, but burned myself doing so 😅. Great flavors, very cheesy, and delicious. The salsa and curtido was excellent as well, not served raw like other places tend to do. Highly recommend you try out the pupusa revuelta and chicharron con queso. Also ordered a pan con pollo. Since it was takeout, they put all the toppins on the bread and put the 'pollo con recado' on the side, so the bread wouldn't arrive soggy. Excellent flavors. Definitely coming back to try out some breakfast and sopas. 12/15/2024: Update review. Lowering my grade to 3 stars since it doesn't allow 3.5 stars. The pupusas here are still bomb. What kills it is the service. Ordered online at 1:15pm, and was given a pickup time of 15 minutes. You would think a place that specializes mostly in pupusas would have them ready by the pickup time, but no. My order wasn't ready until 2:00 pm. 10 pupusas. The lady behind the register is kind and curteous. But the wait time is a bit too much.

Yelp
Todas las veces que visito LA pasó por aquí a comer pupusas! Están muy deliciosas y con sabor autentico.
google avatar

Yelp
Seeing Los Cheros via IG. I've been wanting their pupusas for sometime. This place located in industrial area not too far from the fwy. Getting to order, my bf and I used the touchscreen kiosk that's available by the entrance coz the ladies were busy taking phone orders. We ordered revueltas, queso, beans and queso, two tubs of curtido. The place is quaint. Minimal seating inside but optional outdoor seating as well. Everything was great and food was still hot when we brought it home. Thank so much for filling me and my family's tummies for dinner.

Yelp
I went back for a 2nd time. I wanted to try out the "tamal de pollo". I was a little disappointed. It was delicious but it hardly had any chicken. But the pupusas is still SUPER DELICIOUS. I will keep going back for the pupusas.
google avatar

Yelp
We were lucky enough to get there when it wasn't as packed! We sat down right after ordering! I love me a pupusa with cheese leaking out and touches the griddle - you know you're about to bite on the best part of the pupusa. I live near El Salvador Corridor in LA, a street bustling with Salvadorean goods and street food, but this is definitely one of the better pupuserias I've had recently! I really enjoy how the shell isn't as thick as the ones I've had around LA so you're able to enjoy the filling. I also appreciate how the filling is very generous but not overwhelming that they take away the flavor and experience. I just wish they had spicy curtido; they gave us spicy sauce to mix with it but it didn't satisfy the craving. Will definitely recommend it to those who are in search of good pupusas.

Virgilynn B.

Yelp
My first time here and I ordered 2 different kinds of pupusas.... Did not disappoint and came out hot and fresh.. made to order! Not much seating... there are a couple tables and booths inside and out. I'll definitely come back to try other items on the menu. Close to home and plenty of parking.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything about papusas matter the cheese, moisture in the masa to how much is packed with the filling. I know of several locations I prefer to eat or order from, BUT let me tell you, this place Los cheros pupuseria ARE MADE from scratch, made to order they are one of the best I have tasted. Can choose from 7 different kinds and so soft and cheesy and hot. These women do an exceptional job with papusa. So delicious and Salas is good and cabbage is good I already ate there twice
google avatar

Yelp
Yes, there's always a long wait, and because of this, I usually order on an app, so I don'thave to wait there. Yes, the place is tiny, and personally, I don't find it pleasant to dine in, which is why I always take my order out. Is the service mediocre? Maybe, but they're always busy, and I don't care if they can't have a conversation with me because I'm there to grab my food and bounce. Most importantly, are the pupusas any good? Absolutely! I've grown up having homemade pupusas from my grandmother. I've also been fortunate enough to visit the homeland occasionally and have had pupusas in El Salvador. Everything about these pupusas is amazing and is the closest to the real thing out in SoCal. This is my go-to when I want some authentic pupusas. Everyone that I've introduced to this place has agreed. My favorites are the revueltas, chicharon con queso, and queso con loroco. My partner loves their chicken and cheese only. Their salsa and curtido are on point and very fresh. If you want some authentic pupusas, place an order ahead of time, take out, and just be okay with getting a quick smile and hurry up and move the type of vibe. I swear it's worth it!

Yelp
This small place has a very chill atmosphere. When I arrived, it wasn't busy at all, with some booths, mostly tables, and a few tables outside. It's a relaxed spot, perfect for a casual meal. The pupusas were a pleasant surprise. They're often critiqued for being heavy and overly cheesy, but these ones, though cheesy, felt light because they weren't overly bready. Even after sharing three whole ones between two people, it didn't feel heavy at all. The chile pupusa was really good, though the one with chicharrón wasn't for me. I've realized I'm not much of a meaty pupusa person in general, but overall, this place is solid, and I'd definitely come back. The curtido wasn't as spicy as I'd like, so I'd recommend asking for a spicier version if that's your thing. But it was nicely acidic, which I loved--it really cuts through the carbs and fat. The horchata was solid, though I'm not much of a Salvadoran horchata person, so it didn't stand out for me. But for those who enjoy it, I think you'll like it. Support this business--yay!

Yelp
Overprice and horrible costumer service! I had I really bad experience I order 18 pupusas and they give just a little bit of tomato sauce quantity for less than 5 pupusas and when i ask for more they say I will have to pay extra and I was going to do it, but it was ridiculous they wanted to charge me the equivalent to 2 extra pupusas just for a 8oz cup of tomato sauce have been and many salvadorean restaurant and they don't do that.

Yelp
I finally made it, and it did not disappoint. I had no time for pictures. When I arrived and ordered, I proceeded to the rest room. Which is in the back kitchen area. If I tell you that they were back there making things by hand, chopping and cooking. It smelled heavenly. I got my order and made it home. The food was fresh and hot still. The tamales were my favorite. I'm a masa girl. Amazing! Cabbage and red sauce was top tier. I'll be back!

Yelp
Visited this place again, and it's the second time already that I've experience rude and unwelcoming staff. Their customer service is so bad where customers have walked out and not purchased due to workers being rude. The lady taking orders has a very bad demeanor making unwelcoming facial expression as you're trying to explain/place your order. I also witness staff being difficult with customers who do not speak Spanish. The food is good but their customer service is so bad that I personally would give another restaurant business instead.

Yelp
Seats between 15-20 people ,in tight lil corner parking lot,in the industrial side of Gardena, driving by one day lost we found this community gem, this place has delicious pupusas, and many other authentic Salvadoran cuisine. The pupsas cost roughly 3.75 and are a great size filled with delicious flavors such as chicharon, refried black beans ,and wonderful Salvadoran cheese ,it melts in your mouth and is very stretchy, there curitdo cabbage is great nice hint of vinegar. Bendiciones,y'all rock and roll.great service, great ambiance.
google avatar

Teresa P.

Yelp
Beans were very salty, I couldn't finish the pupusa. Customer service was dry, they don't greet you just ask what your name is for the order. This was just a one time for me. I'll look elsewhere.
google avatar

Joanna B.

Yelp
Service is very disorganized. Place an order over the phone, when I arrived the food was not prepared yet. I waited for approximately 25 minutes for food to be cooked. Finally got the food but forgot to add the drink. I had to return back for the drink. Parking was horrible and the line was out the door . Regretted coming back for the drink. Overall the food was very good.
google avatar

Kmarie H.

Yelp
So I've eaten here twice already, and both times I danced, rocked back and forth, and openly admitted I would return to order their breakfast. I mean, honestly, how does something so simple taste this good. My husband came with me the second time, and he was impressed with the authenticity of the food. Flavors, quality, and portions, if you know you know. This is food made with genuineness and love it speaks volumes about the owners and chefs. Keep doing what you're doing because you're great at it!

Michelle O.

Yelp
I really love this restaurant. Pupusas are delicious, but they never give us enough tomato sauce.

Yanira G.

Yelp
Muy recomendado Restaurante la comida tiene ese Sabor auténtico de El Salvador sin duda alguna tienen que deleitarse de este restaurante.
google avatar

Redreddwiine F.

Yelp
Excellent food! We've only ordered takeout but the pupusas, yuca Friday platanos and all sides are prob the best I've had anywhere close to the South Bay. I also tried the pupusa de arroz, Excellent. Want to try the caldos this winter!
google avatar

Dottie S.

Yelp
My only go to spot for pupusas soooo good. We normally order about 10 at a time. Have to eat them the same day because not the same next day. Still good but the best when freshly made. Small spot closes early worth it!
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Real Salvis will know this place is legit. Call in your order ahead of time because everyone knows good pupusas take time. Sure, it's not the best customer service; but in my opinion, that's how you know it's going to be bomb. Definitely coming back for more. They are not stingy with the fillings. Best pupusas around

Lucia B.

Yelp
La comida estava cruda cuando me llego el delivery . The food was uncooked when I got my. Delivery.
google avatar

Doreen R.

Yelp
The pupusas are really good always hot and fresh. The services good. It's a small little place and always packed. I order online and take the food home.
google avatar

Yvonne A.

Yelp
I wanted to try their frijoles and queso pupusas after hearing about this place. Unfortunately, I ended up waiting for over 25 minutes for two pupusas (customers after me with larger orders received their food quicker), the bean and cheese pupusas were very greasy and the beans were mostly on one side-not spread out evenly. I finally got my small order when I returned to the counter to find out about it. I was ready to cancel the order because it was taking so long (it wasn't too busy either). I ended up throwing out the second greasy queso and frijoles pupusa. I was so disappointed after looking forward to eating pupusas. I do not recommend their pupusas.
google avatar

Jenny B.

Yelp
Great food! Unfortunately the service is terrible! Slow and the people all mad when they mess up your order. I have been here several times because i love the food. Yet every time, there's a mistake in order or pick up (gave our pick up order to Uber eats when i ordered through grub hub) the lady has the audacity to be upset that she messed up and gave our order away. La gente súper mal encarada, lentos y no saben atender
google avatar

Damian G.

Yelp
45 minute wait for 4 pupusas is crazy unacceptable. I've Been to a lot of pupuserias but definitely will not be returning to this one.

Zosia G.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Even though many reviews say that the service was bad or questionable, I will say I don't know what they are talking about! The lady working in the cashier was very kind. There was nothing negative about her body language or communication. I would say the only downside about Los Cheros is that they have limited seating:/ I would recommend ordering your food ahead of time bc it's busy!:)) Overall great place to grab Breakfast, lunch, dinner:)
google avatar

Jailene A.

Yelp
Amazing service and kind staff that made us feel incredibly welcomed. Staff provided coffee and pan dulce and spoke with us. Great sense of community and environment.
google avatar

Luz G.

Yelp
Best Pupusas Their other food options are so good too! I recommend ALLLLL OF IT!! Y soy Chapina eh!
google avatar

Kay T.

Yelp
Super small place but amazing pupusas. They were a good size and not bad in price. They always have a line so i recommend ordering ahead of time
google avatar

Alicia P.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber eats. I wanted to try it to see if I would return. The food was good. They weren't skimpy on the pupusas filling. Ordered 1 queso and chile, 1 chicharron with cheese, side order of platanos con crema, and Chero#2 Carne asada plate. I will be ordering for dine in next time. Recommend trying it and giving it your own review.

Gilbert S.

Yelp
4% service charge for credit card. I would not come back simply for this. I'm not interested in companies that pass along the cost of doing Buisness to customers. If I didn't come back, you'd be out more than 4% and I'd go somewhere else that doesn't charge a fee and enjoy it even more.

Imelda G.

Yelp
Deliciosa comida y excelente servicios al cliente, se los recomeindo 100% Delicious food and excellent customer service!!!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Authentic flavors from El Salvador, highly recommend anything off their menu. It's a very small business only a couple tables available. Parking is limited. We always order to go! 10/10 on everything here. Food is always on point. I usually order the pupusas/revueltas and the pastelitos de carne. Also don't forget to order dessert. I recommend the samita. Customer service is also 10/10 very nice staff considering it's a Salvadoran restaurant. Iykyk
google avatar

Marisol R.

Yelp
This is one of those places that lures you in by their instagram pictures. That's how I ended up here. Super sketchy looking location. Line was out the door, but I should also mention it's a super small place. Only about 3 tables inside and two outside. Took awhile to take my order as it seemed she was more attentive to the phone orders. Once I placed the order it took 45 minutes to get our food!!! Food was nothing out of the ordinary, definitely not worth the wait.

Yelp
Support small businesses in your Area or any area whenever you can ... I love eating at small mom & pa places because they always have a unique delicious taste... I was working out in Gardena and came across this Pupusa spot... I haven't had a pupusa in years so it sounded delicious... Pupusa's are a Salvadoran staple and I don't eat them very often, so when you have a good one you definitely remember... I tried calling the restaurant to place an order over the phone but they didn't answer, so I went on Yelp and was able to place an order for pick-up which was very convenient... They sell other items but I was set on trying the pupusa's and they looked good... When I got to the restaurant to pick up my order I was surprised at how busy it was...It's a small place that seats maybe like 10 people inside and all the tables were full... I looked to see what people were eating and everything looked delicious.. Of course majority were eating Pupusa's but there were also soups and meat dishes that caught my eye... I ordered 2 pupusas, one was cheese & Chiles and the other was Revuelta (which means mixed). The pupusas were really good..They were fresh and so cheesy... The masa they use is soft and taste good.. The curtido is always my favorite, they also give you the options between the red sauce, you can get it spicy or non spicy... I was pleased with the size of the pupusas and the ratio between masa, cheese and stuffing..Typically the ones I've had are all masa and they don't put a lot of cheese or stuffing in it...They always try to be cheap, but this place was not and gives you your money's worth... I Definitely recommend trying this place if you are in the area... They are delicious and taste homemade...

Yelp
Service and price are good! Location is random but an easy stop and there's parking so that's always great! Food in my opinion (I'm super picky with pupusas) they're not the best. The chicharrón and cheese pupusa was 2% chicharrón which didn't even look like if it was true Chicharon. Maybe a mix of chicharon and other stuff. The taste was not there, it was simple. I love cheese but wayyyyy too much cheese here. It was a like a pizza when you cut it. And the cheese had no flavor maybe it's Monterrey cheese (not the best for pupusas in my opinion). Though my bro liked them but again he was craving it lol Maybe I'll give it one more try just to see if it's just me or they just simply not good. Others love it here but I'm not convinced Picture added is the chicharon and cheese pupusa (base on the color it looks more like a cheese pupusa)

Glory M.

Yelp
The food is great. They kind of have a s3cret menu going on with the nachos which are fire. Just recommend to order ahead of time.
google avatar

Xenia V.

Yelp
Had a lunch date & we ordered pupusas de revueltas , & they were fire. Done exactly like they should be. Service was good. & eating outside was better in my opinion although the restaurant inside is nice as well :) definitely will be going back
google avatar

Hector S.

Yelp
Pupusas are delicious! Service is good and almost family like feeling due to the size of the place. I've been here multiple times. Will continue to come back.
google avatar

Domo A.

Yelp
5 estrellas por que la comida siempre sale rico aquí. Son pupusas, no son tacos y no es taco dolar, no es comida rápida, y es obvio que las pupusas tardan más en salir. La comida rica, siempre toma su tiempo. Muchas gracias al equipo (más bien la familia) 5 stars because the food is always very delicious. Huge and filling pupusas. They're pupusas, and they take time. This isn't a taco stand, call your order in ahead of time. GOOD FOOD TAKES TIME! The ambiance is hole in the wall, which feels like home to many of us Latinos who eat here. If you want authentic, this is it!!! Thank you to the family who is keeping this place running!

Yelp
I visited Los Cheros Pupuseria on a Sunday morning for breakfast. I drove about 25-30 mins because I saw their food on a viral instagram reel and it looked delicious. The place is tiny, I counted and about 10 people can comfortably sit inside. There was additional seating outdoors but very limited. The menu was confusing and when ordering, I was even more confused. We requested to order the dish that was being advertised on the reel, which apperently was "El Chero #3." What is confusing to me is that the menu inside their establishment did not have "El Chero #3" or any other "El Chero #1 or 2" listed on their menu. Anyway, the food was good. I really liked the hand made tortillas, and the flavor of the beans was tasty. The pupusas were good as well, and their curtido was interesting because it had cilantro and what appeared to be lime juice. It did however, take over 30 mins to get our order which was a bit dissapointing. I did notice that most orders were placed over the phone/online and customers carried out. I think I will give it another try but order ahead for carry out.

Hector L.

Yelp
Must be very busy, good for them. Left on hold for 10mins. with no answer. Only come here if you are not in a hurry.
google avatar

Marco C.

Yelp
I travele for two hours just to give a try this restaurante! But was first and last....1 pupusa revuelta: no flavor ‍ ..The service is too slow, my wife got pastelitos but the flavor wasnt there.... More veggies than meat .... The only food i enjoyed was a Caldo De Gallina Pinta , that was Bomb ... ohh one thing is... take forever to bring your food to your table... well they have 2 tables only too . but im not coming back ... sorry!
google avatar

Gabby B.

Yelp
My first time ordering and absolutely loved the pupusas! Lots of yummy filling, soft , delicious and not greasy! Service was great too! Will definitely order again!

Evon O.

Yelp
The place is VERY SMALL. They have a menu with no prices. The cashier is all over the place and doesn't do any eye contact with you when you order or just in general when communicating with her. She doesn't say welcome you or greet you in general! She has no customer service personality! I understand she is busy, but manners should always be FIRST! Especially in Central American culture that is the first thing that you are taught, by the parents since you are little. They have a-lot of Togo and pick up orders, so that phone is constantly ringing. We order Caldo de Gallina India- Good taste good serving portions. Well seasoned. 3 Pupusas de queso con chicarrón. The masa could use some more seasoning and they need to add more of the filling. Not the best had better. Service to eat inside was quick that is the only part I can't complain about. It took about 30 minutes. Our total for the food shown in the pictures and 2 can sodas was $45.00
google avatar

Jose S.

Yelp
Best pupusas in the South Bay! It's a small place so be ready to take it home if you can't find a seat. The chicharron pupusa was my favorite. Everything on the menu looked great but I was there for pupusas and pasteles de carne. They were so good too. We'll worth the drive and you definitely get your money's worth. I can't wait to go back and explore more of the menu.
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
The service was okay. They seem to be disorganized. I had to wait 35 minutes for my online order. It seems like the staff overlooked my order. The food was just okay, nothing special. There is not much space to dine in.
google avatar

Karina N.

Yelp
I drive from the IE to Gardena just for these pupusas. This Sunday they were extra amazing. Just the right amount of cheese and the chicharrón was delicious. I know it gets busy there so I called ahead and my order was ready when I got there. If you're looking for a nice sit down spot, this may not be it because seating is limited so I prefer to go, but that doesn't stop me from eating one in the car while they're nice and hot.

Karina C.

Yelp
Be prepared to wait atleast an hour for your food. I placed an order over the phone and 50 mins later still not ready. The food is ok, has good flavor but not worth the wait. I ordered empanadas and wasn't even filled with enough meat. Only 1 of the 3 had a good amount. Parking is horrible by the way. They used to be better but needs improvement.
