"Los Compañeros, the year-old Mexican replacement to seafood institution Johnny’s Half Shell, went dark on December 31." - Tierney Plumb

"John Fulchino was running dishes from the kitchen across a buzzing, full house while simultaneously greeting longtime customers with gleeful elbow-bumps on the first night of service at Los Compañeros, the new Mexican spot he and longtime friend and business partner Ann Cashion debuted in Adams Morgan at the end of October. It’s no surprise the restaurant was packed on the first night, technically a soft opening only announced on Fulchino’s private Facebook page. Together he and Cashion have opened 11 restaurants in the D.C. area and three in this exact spot. The diners that night were celebrating their return after beloved seafood institution Johnny’s Half Shell closed last year in the same location." - Evan Caplan

So happy this neighborhood spot it back open! Loved that they kept the original Cashion’s layout. The food is familiar but a little different and well-priced. Everything was good but of special note: the shrimp quesadilla (not pictured) and was flavorful and surprisingly filling and only $12. The margarita was excellent—absolutely no pre-made mix. Looking forward to going back soon!

It was fine but didn’t care for the crabcakes. Perhaps some items from Austin grill days didn’t need to come back. The chicken thighs were the best item on the menu! Very reasonable drink prices. Service was great.

Really lovely! I enjoyed the special artichoke and asparagus tacos. The chips and salsa were great. Service was super friendly and great! I thought the rice could have had a bit more flavor, but everything else was very enjoyable! Great outdoor seating too 😁

Great ambiance, food, and service. Had a couple of good vegetarian options the day we went. Menu is short and sweet. Enjoyed the bison ribs, seafood soup, and strawberry frozen marg.

First time visit to Los Compañeros but longtime fan of all their restaurants! Loved the grilled sable and pork tamale (see photos.) Also loved the seafood soup and fish tacos. It’s great to have you back🎉❗️

We ate here last night and it was amazing! Almost everything on the menu is gluten free ☺️ Plus, the service was wonderful - Alvaro was our server and he was very kind. Would highly recommend!

Fantastic food, atmosphere, and service! From the first bite of chips and salsa you’re hooked. The Cashion kitchen just keeps it coming - the fish tacos are crispy and delicious - the tamales have such flavor and yet the masa is light and delicate - the shrimp quesadillas are gooey cheesy and full of fresh shrimp. My favorite is the Yucatán chicken thighs- so tender, perfectly spiced, and perfectly cooked- we always get an order to go for our lunch salads the next day. Truly the best value in town. The front of the house is welcoming, upbeat, and beautiful. It’s your neighborhood cantina but elevated. The perfect place to hang out or have a date night. Can’t wait for our next visit- save some chicken for me;)

Our experience here was unfortunately very disappointing. We ordered three food items and none was good - I was shocked to read Sietsema's WP review and can only imagine that we got an off night or he was such a fan of Johnnys Half Shell he gave this place a free pass. The fish tacos were all breading and no fish. Chicken had no yucatan flavors - they tasted fine but were just basically grilled with none of the promised dry rub flavors and no accompanying sauce. The guac was average and the chips slightly stale. The inside is still great, just like Johnny's, but the rest was so lacking I feel compelled to write one review of warning against the others here.
