Detroit Restaurants Take Cautious Steps Toward Dine-In Service - Eater Detroit

"Just down the road in the Mexicantown business district, pairs of diners relaxed at patio tables outside Los Galanes at 7 p.m. with six feet of distance between themselves and other couples." - Brenna Houck

Where to Sip Margaritas in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"This popular Mexicantown establishment has a great patio in the summertime and plenty of margaritas to choose from. Los Galanes offers a variety of “tropical” fruit flavored frozen margaritas as well as options like the fresh lime with Patron. The restaurant also serves half and full liters of margaritas, for days when glass just won’t do," - Eater Staff

Service was good. Our server told us to try the limon fresco margarita. I guess they freshly squeezed lime juice and let me tell you probably the best margarita. I like their chips and salsa but I had to put more salt on the chips. The drink was fabulous. I got the lunch special from 11-2pm. No outside patio yet this year. Not sure when they open that. Large drink menu. No happy hour specials though for drinks. I like their pork!!

We had a really nice dinner, it was Margarita day today. The service was great. The food was great, and the atmosphere is really cool in this place. Free chips n salsa. We had the enchilada suiza, and the Mexican tacos and some house Margaritas! Jennifer was a great server, highly recommended easy to park out in the street in a really nice place to eat!! Even the restrooms were in really good shape. I had cool barn, doors and decor. They really take care of this place! 👍!

Google
1st time visit. Loved the neighborhood. Plenty of Mexican restaurants to choose from. Food was ok, nothing authentic or tasty. $18 for 3 tacos w/rice and bean paste. Nice enough place to take tourist. Perhaps a food truck for better taste and value.

The food was so fresh and came fast! The server was phenomenal too! Atmosphere was chill and relaxing! 10/10 recommend the crispy tacos 😋 and fire salsa 😻😻

Google
Cute spot; service was good food was not as good as I had hoped for. There are wayyy more decent spots in southwest Detroit for authentic Mexican food. This place miss the mark. Raised in Southwest Detroit! I will definitely not be back.

Google
This is by far the best Mexican food I’ve ever eaten and I’ve been to Mexico. The staff are attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxing and I enjoy the music too. My favorites, I always get, are the taco salad and the Miami Vive.

Google
Cheese dip was really good. Our food was just ok. Service was not good. 3-4 tables that sat after us got their food before we did. When we asked about our food waiter went back and then a manager came over and said “they are making your food now”. We had already been there for 35-40 mins.

Google
Great Mexican food. Good salsa. All the dishes had at our table we're very good.

Yelp
Food is always good. I've been eating here many times over the years. Service is right on. Very clean and friendly It has its own parking lot

Yelp
It is Cinco de Mayo and we are hammered. We are currently still in the restaurant, and the service has been wonderful. Everyone here is very sweet, but it's very busy so the attentiveness we would get on a normal night is a little bit lower than what we would typically expect. However, they were very quick with seating us, and even offered drinks in the line at the door, which is what an enticed us in the first place to come in. The drinks were Strong (ARE strong) but the food from start to finish has been less than what we were anticipating. to start, we got chips and queso. Of course this came with salsa, that was sweeter rather than spicy. Best part of the evening. The queso, was simply melted cheddar, which was disappointing because it was almost $13. I ordered the chicken flautas - they were good enough to finish, but nothing to brag about back home. The rice was flavorless, but the beans were great! (Its hard to mess up beans). Generally, the ambiance was good! Super quiet in comparison to the other bars popping off. But other than a strong pour, we have no reason to return. xav's Corner: Super drunk off the margs but the steak was mid, and they couldve put more on the 25$ steak ranchero, (was not worth it). The line was short for a reason. The pitcher did its job but tasted just alright.

Yelp
Service was fine food not so much. Had not had Mexican in a while. We were downtown and tacos sounded good. Ordered the 2 beef and one chicken. On the taco scale they were not good at all and the beans looked like had been sitting out a long time. I ate one and half another and did not want anymore. My wife ordered a burrito, and it was a little bland and just OK..beans looked the same. Margaritas were good though.

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing vibes. Place is pretty big so they were able to seat our table of 10 quickly even without reservations. I had a margarita and a quesadilla and they were both perfect!

Yelp
It was hard to choose which Mexican restaurant to eat at in the "little Mexico" area of Detroit. We picked Los Galanes because of their patio. The patio offered plentiful seating but the chairs were just cheap plastic and not the most comfortable. The service was polite and attentive but slow at times. We did visit during lunch time on a Friday so we expected delays. The foot traffic was pretty consistent and the salsa served at the table was flavorful with the right amount of spice, so we were hopeful that the food would be good as well. We ordered the enchiladas mole and botana. The mole was pretty decent, not too thick and was adequately seasoned but there wasn't nearly enough on the dish. The beans and rice were not to par with the mole, so those were left on the plate. The botana was beautiful but the flavor was lacking. There was no chorizo in the dish as described and there was just no flavor to be found. The dish was fixed by adding sour cream and lots of salsa. I'm not opposed to stopping in the area again but will look for other food options next time.

Yelp
Not bad, food was average for that area but their dinner menu was overpriced. Better deals for basically the same food elsewhere.

Yelp
Cool, relaxed ambiance and fun decor. Very spacious inside. Lots of seating and the tables are spaced out nicely. I felt like we had a lot of privacy. Clean bathrooms. Excellent service. Brian was very attentive and kind to my table. I enjoyed my cheese enchilada suizas. The green salsa was very good. I also enjoyed the red salsa that came with our homemade tortilla chips. Nice kick and flavor! The panchitos were a great appetizer. The house margarita was done well and I enjoyed my Havana rum drink. They have their own free parking lot, which is a nice perk. Fun place!

Yelp
We chose this place because I read the good reviews prior. It was fairly empty inside which surprised me for dinner time on a Thursday. Our waitress was kind and we ordered delicious margaritas while we waited for our other friends to show up. Everyone loved their choices. I had the beef chimichanga. It was ok, sort of bland but tolerable. Large portions so we all had boxes to go. I'm glad we tried this place but I'd definitely try somewhere new next time we're in the area.

Yelp
This feels so suburban. I wanted Mexican food. My husband got to pick which spot. We've never been here, so despite the lower Yelp ratings, I thought, why not? My parents loved what we brought them. My husband and I thought our picks were tastyish enough. Love from us, though? Eh. It was alright. Not terribly cheap. Gosh, I miss the old days when you got a bargain and much tastier food as a reward for hauling your ass into the city. Not anymore. It wasn't outrageously priced, but it wasn't any cheaper from outlying areas either. The dining experience could have been had in Canton or Northville or anywhere. There was nothing special. Nothing that wowed. No must-have dishes on the menu. It was just your ok run of the mill Mexican joint. Which is fine. Just not in Mexicantown.

Dan S.

Yelp
Food entree was good, when served correctly. Order was mixed up, some didn't get right order; others didn't get their order when everyone else did. Margaritas were a 5 at best. Tasted watered down. Expected better margaritas from a Mexican restaurant. Have always frequented restaurant in the past, don't know I'd return or recommend again.

Chris O.

Yelp
Food was bland. Asked for ground beef and they just chopped up the shredded beef and put it in the burrito. The wet burrito was not wet at all they covered it in a mozzarella cheese and burnt the flour tortilla. The queso was so thick and had no flavor. Also drinks were empty for 5-10 minutes and had to ask for more. Waitress was more worried about clearing the plates on the table.

Yelp
First off we got right in on a Sunday , stopped in for a quick bite to eat after walking around Mexican Town . Got the small botana for lunch and split with my wife . Was tasty and full , peppers , olives, beans , avocado and onion ....the chips and salsa fresh as can be definitely my favorite place in Mexican Town

Hank E.

Yelp
Not my best visit! My chunky beef burrito look more like beef hash and the drink was so disappointing.
google avatar

Cynthia B.

Yelp
I absolutely love their cheese queso! Very good food, the pitcher of Margaritas is a little pricey.
google avatar

Raymond S.

Yelp
Well, that was outstanding. I had a wet burrito which was delicious. Grandson plowed through his street tacos and Mama loved her chimichangas. Now, she has a preference for chimichangas and said this was second to that, I had (past tense) a favorite for a wet burrito (same restaurant) but I felt this surpassed this. One thing we both agreed on was how incredibly clean the restaurant is, even the window sills are clean as can be and when people leave a table sweeping in part of the table clean up. Very impressive. I did not go five stars because our server was a bit on the slow side but regardless we will be back-I just wish Mexicantown (a Detroit gem) was closer than 60 miles from home.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was so good, the server was friendly, and our food came out quickly. I will definitely be back if I'm ever in the area

Gabby S.

Yelp
I wouldn't call this "authentic" Mexican, more like Mexican for a Midwest palette. I ordered a vegetable fajita expecting peppers and onions, and instead got a strange assortment of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage, and the smallest bit of onion and peppers imaginable. I was flabbergasted. The vegetables weren't well seasoned either. I literally couldn't eat it. The service and atmosphere were good enough. I didn't have any issues there.

Yelp
Stopped in today for some authentic Mexican food and was honestly disappointed. The decor is nice but restaurant smells like rusty pipes. The server was okay seemed alittle annoyed at beginning but lightened up by end. The food lacked flavor. Steak tasted like it was marinated in beer and threw on grill with no seasonings. Only good thing was the refried beans. Unfortunately won't be returning here unless they make some much needed improvements.

Yelp
Great service by Karie. Excellent beef tacos with rice and beans. Could if used a little more rice on my plate. Excellent corn chips
google avatar

Rob A.

Yelp
Pretty gross overall. Place was pretty dirty and food was bland and generally nasty. This is a bottom of the barrel Mexican restaurant. Still looking for a good one in Mexicantown!
google avatar

Ronald S.

Yelp
Service was excellent. Food? Not so much. The beef part of the fajitas was very tough. The guacamole was good, not too much taste though. The queso was good. The combination was party good. Steak enchilada was chewy again. The tostada and taco good. Finally the fried ice cream was really disappointing. The outside was very chewy!! Never had that before. I think if I went again , and will because I love the atmosphere and service, I will focus on the chicken and ground beef things.

Yelp
A good place for authentic Mexican food! They start with chips and salsa, their chips are the perfect amount of crispy and they're not too salty like a few other places I've eaten at. The menu is vast and you are surely spoilt for options, I got the tacos and the Al Pastor taco was delicious. My friend got the chicken enchiladas and he really enjoyed these too!! We sat out on the patio and the vibe is casual and fun. We didn't try the margs but they looked great too. It's definitely busy, but the service was good for how busy it was. Would go again :)

Yelp
We went here last weekend and really enjoyed ourselves. Me and my husband both had a delicious frozen cocktail. My husband had a shrimp and octopus appetizer and he said it was delicious. I got tacos and would highly recommend the shrimp tacos. Wasn't a fan of the fish tacos. My husband enjoyed his meal, skirt steak. The waiter was attentive and the place was busy. They really got us in and out so if you are looking for a leisurely, long dinner, I would choose somewhere else. But it was perfect for a quick, delicious dinner. For the two of us, we paid under $80 including tip.

Yelp
We came as a group of 4 on an adventurous night out. The reception and waiting experience is off-putting, as they make you stand outside in a tent with very minimal heat and absolutely no beverage service available, not even order in the bar and carry out plastic cups. TERRIBLE!! To the owner--you need to allow drinks outside in the tent! Once seated, things improved. We got and enjoyed margaritas of various types. The chips and salsa are outstanding--realy noteworthy salsa! Then I had chili--a nice, big bowl for $4.00--one of the best food values of the year. And then we all had typical Mexican fare--burritoes, tacos, chimichangas, tamales, etc. All good. If you are in the area, definitely worth a visit. Would I make it a point to drive there from Birmingham again? Maybe.

Yelp
Celebrated Cinco De Mayo at this lovely restaurant. Walked into a beautiful brick building that was decorated nicely to respect the Mexican culture. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. The house margarita was tasty and the food was both flavorful and tender. The complementary chips and salsa will have you full before your entree. The salsa was light with a nice bite to it. A great authentic Mexican restaurant.

Yelp
Amazing food. Great service. With prices you can't beat. It's authentic and affordable

Yelp
One of the best Mexican restaurants in Detroit. We had queso dip, egg with chorizo tortas & combination plate. Ambience is so cozy & fun. Staff are friendly & helpful.

Yelp
Los Galanes is one of the better Mexican restaurants in Southwest Detroit. Been here plenty of times and never had a bad experience or meal. People always seem to enjoy themselves, as the restaurant has a festive character to it. Service is sufficient and the food is quality, too. Pricing is slightly higher than the competition on Bagley, but I personally prefer it over Mexicantown, Mexican Village, and Xochimilco.

Yelp
Let me start out this review by saying, I moved from Los Angeles to Detroit, and in these short few weeks of being here, I'm missing authentic and not so authentic Mexican food... so let's get into my experience at Los Galanes Mexican Restaurant. First, I had the pleasure of having Victoria as my server, I sat outside because I had my dogs, and it's always a plus when your server is a dog lover, if you have the chance to sit with her, please do, not only is she a sweet soul, she's attentive without being overbearing and she kept my dogs bowls filled with ice water (it was hot hot). Ok, now the food, I ordered, the wet chicken burrito, it didn't disappoint, chicken seasoned without being salty, the guacamole, sour cream, and pico on top was a perfect amount without being soggy. I also had the shrimp and steak fajitas, shrimp cooked perfectly, I despise an over cooked shrimp anything, steak seasoned and tender, not one complaint about the steak and I love love steak. The only thing I would suggest is, the heat is so aggressive that even though summer is short, a shade of some sort is needed for the sun when it's at its peak, but that's really a whatever‍... I can see this place being my watering hole

Yelp
First time eating here. Typical food. Had the tacos. My friend had the fajitas and I wish I would have ordered that instead. The drinks are . We sat outside on the patio which was amazing!

Yelp
Such outstanding food and service second to none! Great place to relax and get your Mexican on!

Yelp
Great atmosphere & Service is always great as it should be. The food is amazing and the Fresh Lime juice Margaritas are a must have. We always as for Jorge as our server. He is awesome @ what he does. Enjoy your visit as much as we did.

Yelp
The worst experience ever ! At one of my bites into my shrimp entree , there was a chunk of chicken that went into my mouth, I chewed, realized it was chicken and spit onto my plate ? I do not eat meat ! I told our server, she then told the manager and he came to our table with the plate with chewed meat in his fingers , basically yelling at me! Telling me it wasn't Chicken! He said he wasn't going to do anything about it, because he said it wasn't chicken, as he is still rolling in his fingers ( that was chewed and spit out ). Then kept saying we ate it all ! Disgusting! Absolutely no customer service and the guacamole tasted and looked like it was frozen premade ? The quality has honestly down 80% and I will never return!

Yelp
Homemade chips and salsa are very good! With a touch of pepper or something that gives them a warm zing. Great size California burrito with steak that is well seasoned and has a good amount of beans, lettuce sour cream and cilantro. The beans and rice are authentic and very tasty. This was our second time here and we enjoyed it far more than the first two years ago. We will come back!

Gary J.

Yelp
Great Atmosphere, food & service. Highly Recommend! Margaritas are not the bad either!!!

Yelp
Went here for my birthday, as I love authentic Mexican food. I had already checked out the menu online and knew what I was going to get. Unfortunately, the online menu was out of date and the dish I wanted wasn't there, so that was disappointing. The chips and salsa provided for four people wasn't enough for two. Could've been a little more generous. Also no hot sauce on the tables. But the actual entrees were good. I had enchiladas in mole, and it was some of the best mole I've had. Also tried my son's taquitos, which were delicious. Service was fine, and the indoor atmosphere has a nice Mexican feel without being tacky or tourist-trappy. Overall, it was worth the trip downtown. Very much enjoyed the food.

W D.

Yelp
I had lunch wet burrito ground beef, that was a generous portion. There was a little too much dairy for me, the beef appeared to be in a cheese/creamy sauce, covered the wet sauce appeared to be a creamy sauce, plus sour cream and cheese. The taste was okay, just felt very heavy in the end. I asked if they had a hot salsa and it looked like they just added a bunch of crushed peppers to the regular salsa. There were a lot of seeds. Pepper seeds are hard to digest. The regular chip salsa was delicious. I am looking forward to returning. The steak tacos my guest ordered looked amazing, and they said they were delicious. I definitely will be revisiting

Deb N.

Yelp
Service was friendly and food was good. Clean and fun. Much better than Xochimilco nearby

Timothy B.

Yelp
Yuck. Bad food, bad service, got order wrong, no sight of manager, weak margaritas, small. Many street vee Ed nford yo put this to shame. I feel like I was mugged. I'm fine with this place,

Laura G.

Yelp
Awesome patio. The food was excellent as well as the service. Definitely try the fried ice cream. Best I ever had.

Yelp
They have a long wait on weekends. The food was not that flavorful to me compared to other places In Mexicantown. They have a cool system where they text you when your table is ready. The margarita was bland. The food did come out fast though. They also have a nice ambiance.
google avatar

Lindsay L.

Yelp
It is a classic Mexican restaurant and well decorated. I've always thought the food is good but sometimes my friends have left feeling a little sickly and stomach gets upset but I think it is all just very heavy food. It is not as authentic and fresh tasting as some of the other places in Mexicantown but it is large and has a lot of seating. The margaritas are good and the staff is very friendly.

Yelp
Great service and delicious food! I had the chicken enchilada mole and it was great!

Yelp
Our experience at the place was absolutely horrific. I have been here at least 5-6 times or more. After collecting our take out order, (guacamole lacking salt), the parking lot attendant came screaming walking towards our vehicle as we were about to leave. Older white male, always wearing sunglasses, always has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. If you've been to this establishment chances are you've seen him. We were being accused of "dumping a beer can." I live in this neighborhood and have never "dumped" anything in my life. After screaming obscenities at us too close to my window, exhibiting very threatening behavior, the parking lot attendant sprayed me in the face with mace while inside of the vehicle. Then, he vanished. My partner ran inside the building looking for a manager. After telling whoever he talked to about what happened my partner was told "You can call the police." 7/14/2024 I do not recommend coming to this establishment ever!

I love the food here I come here a lot! Every time I come here I try to get something different and so far I've had 4 different dishes and all of em are amazingly delicious and flavorful! Can't wait to try more!

Yelp
Really liked outdoor patio on a great Friday afternoon! Ordered off the lunch menu. Some green chili cheese enchiladas for me - to share with a number 3 lunch special. Both came with beans and rice. Kinda large portions. Everything tasted good - not great - went with sodas for beverages. Waitress was good. With today's inflation prices - like just under $30 with tip - not bad !

Yelp
I'm not quite sure why the ratings for this place decreased significantly. I've been coming here for years and I have always had a wonderful experience. I went with my friend yesterday and they put our name down even though they were extremely busy. This was really nice of them to do because it's a long drive for us. The waiter brought out fresh, warm chips and salsa. Generally restaurants don't bring out newly made chips, especially less than an hour before closing. The salsa was delicious as always. I ordered a strawberry pina colada and it was soo good! It was huge! My friend and I also ordered the nachos with queso, but they forgot to add the toppings on top. We asked them to add them. This was okay, I just prefer the queso to be separate. Next time I will stick to the plain queso instead of having it added on top of the chips. I will also order the nachos because those were really good last time! As my entree I ordered the shrimp fajita, which is what I always get. However, their burritos look phenomenal. The tortillas were warm and fresh, the fajitas were sizzling hot and you could tell it was high quality. My friend ordered the flautas with beef, but they did not like it. They thought it was plain and honestly the beef looked burnt. They thought it would come with ground beef instead. We both enjoyed the rice and beans. The guac here is soo good too! If you order what I ordered, you will not be disappointed! The waiter was nice, but the service wasn't that great. He was very low energy and forgot my sour cream and of course did not notice that our order came without toppings. The waiters/waitresses that I have had in the past were much better.
