Dark Side
The brainchild of local restaurateur Darren Matte, who's other projects include Danville Harvest and SF's Per Diem, Parkside is looking to bring fresh, local farm-to-table dining to Downtown Los Gatos.
Housed in the former Le Boulanger (RiP), Parkside's décor is classy and elegant, and has a decidedly New American menu with a little Italian thrown in for flair.
The Good:
*Reservations thru OpenTable
*Very romantic ambiance and would be a terrific place for a date night.
*Happy Hour Seven Days a week (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)
*Outdoor parklet dining with heaters
*Reasonable amount of gluten-free food on the menu that's
*Service by Lexi was outstanding. She was fast, efficient, and personable. The staff as a whole was really good. Not Michelin good, but better than your average restaurant.
*I enjoyed the seasonal butternut squash soup, and if you want to share a bowl they can split one serving into two bowls.
*Great Bar scene
*Carissa raved about her Horseradish Salmon--and she doesn't even like horseradish! But the fish was cooked well and the horseradish flavor was pleasant and not overwhelming.
*I enjoyed my fried chicken, despite the white meat being slightly overcooked. The skin/crust was crispy and full of flavor, and the concomitant mashed potatoes & gravy were a reminder of Turkey Day to come...
The Meh:
*Street Parking in DTLG can be a hassle Fri-Sun, but the rest of the week you should be pretty good to go. There are some lots nearby, as well, but make sure to read the signage.
*"Substitution politely declined," per the menu. Make of that what you will, I'm not really a substitution kinda guy but if you are you're SoL.
*They *seem* to have a decent selection of vegetarian/vegan items but, unlike the gluten-free items, they're not clearly denoted with a "V" or something.
The Ugly:
*Credit card needed to secure the cancelation as there's $25/per person cancelation charge on reservations if not canceled within 24hrs.
Conclusion: Great date night spot with fantastic service. The food was also quite good, as we're a tough crowd to feed, but it wasn't great--altho there's lots of potential. So in the meantime Los Gatos Parkside scores a solid 4.5*, but it's still highly recommended.
