"If there were an LA Mount Rushmore dedicated to Salvadoran food, Los Molcajetes would definitely be on it. This place started as a successful food truck back in the 1970s, but now has a handful of locations around the central LA area, each serving some of the city’s tastiest pupusas. Make sure to try their rice flour pupusas, which take on a similar color to the corn version, but with a distinctive chewiness we love. Common fillings like chicharron, cheese, and loroco are all on the menu, but so is the way-less-common vegan cheese pupusa. The curtido is delicious and simple with cabbage and carrot, and the tomato salsa serves as a light, spicy dressing to drench your entire order in. You can get your griddle cakes individually, as part of the double pupusa combo, or our favorite option: the desayuno típico. You’ll get two small pupusas (filling of your choosing), alongside some morning eggs and chorizo. Food Rundown Desayuno Típico This breakfast spread is big on the masa, and we’re not complaining. The small chicken tamal is a bit too soft and can border on soggy, but the chicken and pepper stuffing goes great with its savory red sauce. However, the dish’s small pupusas, queso fresco, and spicy chorizo links are where you should focus. We prefer the creamy bean and cheese pupusas with nicely browned corn masa and love to dip them in the bowl of stewed pinto beans that come on the side. Vegan Cheese Pupusa Although the vegan cheese doesn’t have the same meltiness that we love, it’s still creamy, decadent, and a great substitute for the usual queso. It pairs super well with Los Molcajetes’ chewy rice masa and smooth bean paste and tastes great hot off the griddle. Cheese And Loroco Pupusa A good cheese and loroco pupusa is a glorious experience, and this one delivers. The loroco, which reminds us of asparagus with a nice crunch, blends well with heaps of melted white cheese and golden, grilled masa. Pastelitos These fried turnovers are golden brown and extra crispy, but still sturdy enough to hold tons of ground pork filling. The meat comes with a nice sofrito to keep it from getting dry and calls for some Salvadoran curtido for an extra zing of acid." - Sylvio Martins

Google
The restaurant only offers pick up orders at this moment. The pupusas are good. I always order platanos con frijoles y crema and this is the last time I will purchase them. When I got home I tried them and they tasted old and dry like if they had been just reheated. I have been a loyal customer for many years. So went back to the restaurant and told them the platanos did not taste fresh. I felt they stole $9. The cashier did not offer a refund or to replace them. I had to request to at least be refunded for the platanos and she was hesitant about it. Very bad customer service. If you are ordering platanos check them before you leave to make sure they are freshly cooked and avoid this trouble. They get one star due to how they handle this situation and the quality of the platanos dish. FYI they now charge for salsa and curtido.

Google
Very disappointed with this new location Lots of employees but you see them all running around with no direction lack of structure from management Train staff better , don’t let employees take bags of food on their way out it only creates the kitchen to run behind on seating customers orders . Hire a new manager who can lead the new employees.

Google
The best Pupusas and Salvadorian food in LA iam a customer for almost 40 years 🤗🤗❤️

Google
Called multiple times to place an order and all they do is answer and never say anything. Take out service extremely sucks!

Google
Best pupuseria in East LA. I’ve been coming here ever since we moved to East LA. Please be considerate and remember that this is not a fast food restaurant so your food does take time to come out. They have additional parking in the lot where El Pollon used to be at. Highly recommend the empanadas de dulce for dessert and the horchata here. Authentic Salvi flavors.

Google
I was really satisfied with my order everything was fresh and tasty only thing is the crazy wait but I'm going to say it was worth it

Google
I've been going here since I was 5 back when they had a spot around El mercado. The staff is super friendly and quick by far my favorite pupusas

Google
Food will take more than a little while, freshly made 😋

Yelp
I've been eating at Los Molcajetes for years! This is by far, one of the best pupuserias in town. I've brought several of my salvi sistas who grew up eating their grandma's pupusas and have gotten rave reviews. They are quite busy and your food is made to order so order ahead if you can, otherwise expect to wait 20-45 minutes depending on the time of day. Either way, you won't be disappointed!

Flor M.

Yelp
Hands down the best pupusas ever! Prices are reasonable and the service is excellent. I recently placed an order through Uber eats for delivery. The app doesn't offer bean and cheese pupusas as an option so the restaurant told me to add it to the note in the delivery app. Each pupusa comes with cortido and salsa included and if you want extra there's the option for it. Since each pupusa is made fresh, there is a wait time for your order to be ready. To plan ahead for this, I scheduled my order so the Uber eats driver wouldn't have to wait that long. The pupusas were still hot and fresh by the time they arrived. I wasn't able to snap a picture because my guests devoured them as soon as they arrived. Overall, I highly recommend this place!

Abigail U.

Yelp
I had an incredible experience with both the service and the food during my recent visit. The pupusas and empanadas were some of the best I've had in a while--perfectly cooked, flavorful, and not too greasy. The staff was attentive and friendly, making the meal even more enjoyable. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Great prices , and the food was really taste like homemade , the staff was on top of everything in case we need it anything else , so far is a great place and great seating inside ,

Albert M.

Yelp
Let's start with the phone order taker: Rude is an understatement. Feels as though she hates her job. Takes it out on customers. Can't ask questions because it's the end of the world to answer. How about just answering the questions asked. Asked how long the pick up time. 30 min to 45 minutes. When repeated to make sure it was correct, the answer was you don't have to wait. Parking: Atrocious Smells like urine Should power wash it Maybe the phone lady should clean out there to match the attitude Pick up; Every single person there should clearly seek employment elsewhere. Not a single smile Restaurant: Sticky floors Odor is bad Food; Mediocre Save your money. Go elsewhere

Emily L.

Yelp
Came here for lunch around 12 noon. Very busy morning rush that they took long to give out our order about an . Also they switched back to cash only !!! They do a lot of to-go orders and prioritize them. They desperately need more staff or at least one more person to help service the customers for refills or additional requests. Honestly, Main reason they stay a float is because their food /pupusas are great, service however needs work.

Carlos L.

Yelp
My to go spot for pupusas. Been going here since the pico and hope days. Won't be disappointed. Always made to order, never precooked!

Diana T.

Yelp
Will start this off by saying WORTH THE WAIT! The pupusas here are by far the best! They gave me plenty of curtido and even offered if we would like more. The sopa de pata is delicious I believe they only serve this dish on weekends. I do gotta warn the the wait is a while but in my opinion it's worth it :) Can't wait to come back!

Cesia R.

Yelp
I placed an order to go for the first time and for 10 pupusas all they gave me is this little cup of cabbage mix. I don't mind paying for additional sides or condiments but this doesn't make sense. When I asked for more, I was asked to I pay for "extra" and insisted everything has gone up? I'm well aware but the pupusa dish comes with cabbage. I'm already paying for that. I've never had this problem when I dine in.

Elsa M.

Yelp
In the mood for some homemade popusas. This is a very small establishment, if you're lucky you'll get a seat when you get there if not be prepared to wait. Usually wait time is about 30 min to an 1 hour. The popusas are very fresh and well made right off the comal. The platanos fritos with beans are really good too. They close the dining area at 5 pm and after that is take out until 6 pm. I got there 5 min before 5 pm and they did not allow me to sit down to eat, even though I pointed out that it was not 5 pm yet. I ordered since I was already there and had to wait outside for an hour. Get there early or you'll be looking thru the window. The parking lot is behind the restaurant thru the alley, very small and compact.

Mariah D.

Yelp
Pupusas are good but a little too greasy for my taste, even my husband mentioned that and he likes greasy foods - lol! I felt their sauce and curtido was lacking flavor that was disappointing. Place is a little small and when you order to go not inviting setup, I felt I was in the way waiting for my food. Service was okay since I was getting food to go. They had sign that said cash only by register which was a lie they have device for payment but they left sign which was odd and confusing not just to myself but while I waited for food people paying also confusingly asked if it was really cash only! Not sure I'll be coming back soon maybe if I'm really in a pinch for pupusas? There is a place in Montebello Vchos that's soo much tastier with more flavor selections and their curtido and salsa are super yummy, but they do cost more $$$

Markus A.

Yelp
Be ready to wait!! Good advice is to order at head if you planning on picking up I ordered in person at the place 2:22pm left my number so they will call me when ready, 4pm and order is not ready! Is crazy, my order was 10 pupusas.

Rose O.

Yelp
I've only ordered pick up a couple of times. The pupusas are good!! So are the pastelitos Not many other Salvadoran restaurants to compare it to but the ones I have tried in East La are not good!

Juan L.

Yelp
One of the best places for authentic Salvadoran food. The pupusas are huge and amazing. This restaurant doesn't shortchange you on the chicharron and cheese. The restaurant is neat and clean, and the employees are friendly.

Kat A.

Yelp
We've been coming to this place for over 8 years. We love the food! The pupusas are amazing and I highly recommend coming here. The customer service is fair. This year, they started giving less 'curtido' (pickled cabbage). I ordered 16 pupusas and they gave me a 16 oz cup. I asked if I could get more but the associate told me it would cost extra. I would've given them 5 stars but they need to start being fair about the portion sizes!

Hellen a.

Yelp

Luis D.

Yelp
The food is great- we brought this to a family party and everyone was happy with everything we brought. We paid for extra containers of curtido and it was worth it

Roxie M.

Yelp
The food here is good but the service sucks! You have to get up to ask for everything you might need while dining in. Also they have gotten VERY stingy with their curtido!! If you order to go they give you 1ounce of curtido for each Pupusa. So I made an order of 11 Pupusas & I was given this tiny bag that was supposed to be enough for everything according to the employee. It's ridiculous that they purposely give you a little bit so you can buy it. & One small cup is $4. To me It's like selling a hamburger & charging extra for the lettuce when it's part of the hamburger.

Wendy C.

Yelp
Very disappointing today, I ordered revueltas and they were nasty and soggy as fk. They were just wrapped in foil. The chicharon tasted as if it was undercooked and I didn't see or taste any cheese. Unfortunately I went right before they closed and took my food to go so I wasn't able to call them to make new ones or give me a refund. They used to be decent compared to others, idk what happened.

Gerardo R.

Yelp
These are, by far, the best pupusas in East L A. They are worth the wait. Los Molcajetes: Authentic Salvadoran flavors that never disappoint! A must-visit for delicious cuisine.

Michael B.

Yelp
This is my favorite pupusa place. I've tried many and none beat this place. Only downside is that it can take a while to get seated. They also aren't open late.

Trine R.

Yelp
Food is amazing but the service is horrible, they essentially don't take phone orders since they will start working on them once you arrive only, they have attitude for you to hurry and order, service needs to be better. The food is really good though.

Michael M.

Yelp
Pupusas are good...just greasy! Service was quick, but the personnel seemed miserable and didn't want to be there, and you either...but it was quick service. Got take out, so dis not pay any attention to the inside or how it looked for cleanliness. Hours are a little odd. 6pm closure on weekends seemed strange, and if it was not for the early closure, I'd probably have gotten take out more often.

Cindy C.

Yelp
Best salvi food- from a girl who is salvi back ground! This place is a little pricey but def worth it!!

Maggie A.

Yelp
Yummy pupusas, ensalada, and much more. Order ahead because it takes sometime to get your order ready to go. They offer seating inside, outside and to-go.

Christina V.

Yelp
Been coming here for a while and little by little the services has tremendously gone down significantly. The popusas do not taste the same anymore. I try to order and always give me an hour time to pick up, understandable as I know that they are busy. But lately I come here to pick up and order through grub hub and always forget to give me utensils. I need them as I eat in my car (lunch break) and it just isn't safe to eat with my hands at this time Due to COVID. I thought I would be smart and call in to make sure utensil were included and guess what no fork, knife nor napkins. I guess they expect me to wipe my self on my clothes or car seats. Had to throw the food away.

Tanya G.

Yelp
Wait time was over an hour... The food is worth it....But my waters Be careful with these cup holders! I called the restaurant to let them know, they didn't care but hopefully they let others know to be careful...

Cyndie C.

Yelp
My mother took me here for my birthday, since she knows my passion for Chiles Rellenos. When they arrived, they were drowned in sauce. They are supposed to be lightly sauced, to appreciate the light, crisp egg coating. When I got to the coating, it was tough and tasteless. The Poblano inside was soggy and muddy tasting. It was the worst Chile Relleno I had ever had. We were both really disappointed; Me, in the dish, and my mother, for not being able to give me the treat I wanted

Almas A.

Yelp
Went in with my mom to eat this morning. We've been coming for 10+ years and we sat down after paying for our food, everything was fine until I went to the restroom. First of all there's a sewer leak in the restroom and it smells horrible. No soap. Thank god I had hand sanitizer. Idk how they're cooking and don't even have soap in the bathrooms. Second of all I come back from the restroom and the waitress came up to my mom and told her we couldn't stay too long , and the manager said not to be praying at the table. Wtf ??? That was the rudest thing I've ever heard , our food had not arrived , hell our drinks hadn't arrived , and the waitress said the manager told her to tell my mom. This basically ruined the mood and killed our appetite. So sad that they won't appreciate the customers who come in to and pay their bills , and they e can pray and bless our food if we want. Anywhere we want. Mad harassment. This place ain't worth it in the end if you're going to get harassed and they kill you appetite. No matter the food , it starts at the door of the restaurant. Treat customers with basic respect. I wouldn't be surprised if the health department gives this place a visit. Food 2.5/5. Dry and hard chicharrones, dry yuca. , over cooked pasteles , pupusas basic. Can't mess that up. Customer service 0/5 Facility maintenance 1/5 Overall 1/5

Bryan M.

Yelp
Las molcajetes used to be a great place to come and eat and enjoy food authentic Salvadorian food, not anymore. The food has lost flavor. Their staff is rude. We arrive 4:45 over an hour before closing and they tell my family and I they're not accepting dine in anymore. Why not?!? You close till 6pm! I have always came around this time. Lately this place has lost its true loyal customers.

Aura S.

Yelp
Updating my review because of the shitty "service" I received today. My mom and I walked in before 5 and for whatever reason they didn't allow us to dine in only order to go when online it says they close at 6. Whatever we ordered to go and when I asked the older woman to separate 2 of the 5 pupusas we ordered she started bitching I should have asked before she packed the order. That alone was unacceptable. Then the younger woman working the register gave me a 2oz container of curtido for 2 pupusas so I asked for another and she said it should be enough and that I would have to pay if I wanted more. GTFOH no wonder you're hanging on to 31/2 stars smh. I wanted a refund but had my sleeping toddler in my arms so I just left but never again will I spend my money here. My mom won't be going back either. You treat paying costumers like shit.

James G.

Yelp
The service is horrible the staff is super rude and dirty inside. The food was not that good and tastes old don't recommend you will HAVE A BAD EXPERIENCE.

Inmer G.

Yelp
Una onza de curtito por cada pupusa Tiempo de espera pésimo Cuesta que tomen la order voy a recojer el lugar vacío Si todo lo venden caro deberían de dar mejor servicio

James C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Unfortunately, the comments here are true. I actually drive about an hour to come here because the food is good - however, terrible service. The staff is rude, and make you wait outside no matter how cold it is. They are extremely short staff so be prepared to wait a long time even if there aren't many people dining in. It's shocking how many people in the comments complain about the service, but it doesn't seem like they care.

Jeff T.

Yelp
Idk what's going on with this place but they've definitely gone downhill, not only with the overly reduced portions of Curtido but with the cleanliness too. The last time I was here was in June of 2022 and it literally left a bad taste In my mouth, I ordered a coke to drink and when I took a sip it stunk of saliva! It was the grossest thing I've ever experienced at any restaurant, I had to immediately go to the restroom and wash my mouth and lips I didn't even want to finish my food because of how upset I was at what had just happened...idk how they're washing their dishes but they clearly aren't doing it right. Please be hesitant to drink out of their cups you may get infected with some sort of disease

Melissa M.

Yelp
Giving this place two stars because before today I was a supporter of this small business. However, today my husband picked up a GrubHub order and in my loroco & cheese pupusa was a large sharp shard of what seemed to be plastic. I was lucky to bite it at a flat angle so it didn't hurt me. I understand accidents happen, however when I called to inform them, they apologized and offered me 10% discount on the next order... I hope they discarded the mix like I asked them to, and I hope no one got hurt from the batch. Anyway, I don't think we will be returning.

Nikki R.

Yelp
A short wait but it was worth it! Pupusas and yucca frita had great flavor and filling. I'll be back!

MM A.

Yelp
Pure Deliciousness! Never Dissapoints... Love this place.. The Pupusas are amazing and their pastelitos are yummy and so is the friholes con platanos YUM! Highly Recommend this Place..

3dgar V.

Yelp
I have been coming here for many years now. The service has not always been the greatest, but the good tasty pupusas have kept me coming back. Ordered 9 pupusas yesterday, was super disappointed with the amount of curtido and sauce I was given! I know times are tough, but geez, when each pupusa is $4+, I would expect enough condiments for what I have ordered. I dont think I will be coming back, I hope the owner sees all the reviews regarding this issue and makes the right improvements, if not, I can see this place going down to a 1 star restaurant soon.

Olivia N.

Yelp
I placed a phone order with Andrea today for pickup for 4 pupusas revueltas and an additional order of curtido in the 10oz size because I already know how very little curtido is now included ever since the pandemic. I've been a loyal customer for a few years now, have always been pleased with the service until the last couple of years. I'm attaching pictures of the little container that is supposed to be for 4 pupusas which is absolutely ridiculous! This container of curtido provided is just enough for 1 pupusa! I understand times are tough and prices have risen. That being said, I find it more suitable to raise your prices for your food instead of being stingy and only providing not enough curtido to serve the complete order. When I brought this up to Andrea, she did absolutely nothing to make me, the customer happy. Her response was I understand you, however this is what the owner tells us to give out. I am appalled, disappointed and actually that has left a very bad impression on how you are conducting your business. There is no reason I should be addressing this issue to begin with, just provide the adequate curtido per pupusa. I will no longer be going to your establishment which is a shame because your food is delicious. I'm certain I am not the only one who feels this way. I hope you do the right thing and change this otherwise you are going to be losing alot of customers, which is very unfortunate.

Laura S.

Yelp
The WORST popusa place EVER!!!!!!! 1ounce of curtido PER popusa. RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!! I am amazed at how little the owners care about their customers. My family has been coming here for over 10 years and they have lost a customer. Waiting time is horrible! Be prepared to wait 1 hour for your food to be ready. If you want more salsa you will be ignored for a while and your food will be cold by the time they decide to bring more salsa. When you order over the phone they will have you pick up your order an hour later. The workers have the worst attitude and will argue with you if you ask them for more curtido or salsa to go. I grew up coming here with my family every Sunday and it's sad to know how bad this place is now. Please go elsewhere and save yourself the headache. I recommend El Cafetalito if you are craving popusas, their customer service is the best and they don't limit you on curtido or salsa. To the owner of Los Molcajetes ... take action or you'll keep loosing good customers like me and my family. Take some time to read the reviews so you can realize how badly you are managing your business. I would also suggest hiring nicer employees.. or give them proper training on how to treat customers.

Norma H.

Yelp
The food here is still good. The service has never been great they are always understaffed and generally practically toss the food on your table but even that is understandable. What really pushed my buttons this last time was the amount of curtido they gave me. I understand everything is more expensive and even they have raised the prices but come on...I bought 10 popusas and got a 10 ounce cup of curtido. When I told them it was not enough they told me I had to buy extra. They may as well say curtido sold separately!

Giselle V.

Yelp
The papudas and agua frescas are delicious. Good gets delayed and everything is made fresh, but definitely worth the wait.

xiomara c.

Yelp
I used to love this place, so many things have changed starting from the price of the food and the long waiting time for pickup and dining in but what really did it for me is that when you are ordering pupusas for pick up now you have to pay for your curtido (pickled cabbage) and salsa! That's like you buy a taco but have to pay for the salsa it's just not right. I gave them a 2 star cause the food is good. But I will have to find another pupuseria.

Roger R.

Yelp
Thank you Cindy for making my very first visit awkward by accusing my mother of stealing in front of other customer in-line. You accused her of stealing because she grabbed some leaf from the avocado tree in the parking lot. It was my first time visiting because my mother and her siblings really enjoy your restaurant and she recommended it. I believe that I will never visit your establishment and I know my mother will never eat at your place again. Thank you Cindy for treating us like crap.

A. P.

Yelp
The pupusas are good on the smaller side. I didn't appreciate that they would charge me for the Curtido and salsa, that should be given as a topping/ingredient for your food. That makes no sense at all. Last time to eat at this place for sure!

Olivia A.

Yelp
I have been coming here for several years. Always ordered to go. Today, I'm picking up my order and was given a tiny 2 ounce container with curtido for 5 pupusas!! When I requested extra, the lady said since I had only bought 5, only one container is given. If I had bought 6, they would have given me a 2nd one. Miserable amount of curtido!! If you eat at the restaurant, there's no limit!! They just lost another customer here.

Fernanda C.

Yelp
Really bad customer service they recently changed the ordering procedures to where you have to buy your side of curtido and salsa for the pupusas when you order an to go order. A small cup of salsa and curtido is 3$ extra. When that should be included as if u are eating them in the restaurant. They just lost a customer that has been a client for over 20 years . Very disappointed!
