Food always tastes better when you're hungry, and I came to Los Ninos after a long bike ride, so do with that what you will. That being said, we had the perfect hearty, satisfying, affordable lunch here that was just what was needed after a long ride.
Los Ninos has a small storefront right near the train tracks in Decatur, and is also right next to the Stone Mountain bike trail. It's pretty unassuming from the outside, but very lively and bustling on the inside and was pretty busy on a weekday lunch service.
You order at the counter, where the menu is posted up on some chalk boards. We got some basic nachos, guacamole, an impossible meat torta, some beans and rice, and then I wanted to try a few different tacos so I got one each of the pastor, the barbacoa, and the chorizo.
I did not know that everyone gets complimentary chips and salsa, so as soon as we sat down we got a huge basket of house made chips, some small cups of pico de gallo, and a couple squeeze bottles of salsa.
The rest of the food came quickly and soon our table was completely full. The nachos are pretty good, and the chips in general here are really crispy and also hold their crisp--which is great for nachos because they can actually stand up to the queso without getting soggy. They also load up their nachos generously. To be honest, though, given how many chips you get by default, I don't know that I'd get the nachos again unless I was with a bigger group of people so that we could share them among more people.
The guacamole is solid, and their beans and rice are very very good--clearly not an afterthought.
My lunch buddy was pretty happy with his torta, and the tacos overall are solid. The tortillas are clearly fresh and made in house, and they both hold together well and also stand up to the very saucy meats. The chorizo here is unique in that the cinnamon flavor really stands out among the spices they use to season it. The pastor is good, although I can't say it's my favorite pastor I've had in Atlanta. The barbacoa is juicy but could have stronger flavor.
Overall, I think this is a really solid option to check out when you're in the area, and they offer really good value for money. Would definitely stop by on a bike ride again.
