21 Classic Restaurants In Mexico City

"The reason why the family-run Los Panchos has been a staple since 1945: their flawless pork carnitas. It’s a Michoacán specialty that can be enjoyed on almost anything they serve—on top of chilaquiles, tostadas, petroleras, a fried version of sope topped with a bean layer, and tacos. Big, fat, tacos. They’re made with thick corn tortillas stuffed with finely chopped pieces of meat, including the lean and fatty bits. Two tacos (or maybe three), coupled with a beer, make for a perfect Los Panchos meal. The restaurant has enough space to keep things moving and always attracts a diverse mix of nine-to-five workers on their lunch break, families, and groups enjoying conversations over tequila." - mariana camacho

Los Panchos - Review - Anzures - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"This iconic taquería in Anzures (with three other locations in town) has been a crowd favorite since 1945 and with good reason: the tacos are next-level, and the place is so huge that you’re guaranteed a table within minutes. While the menu is packed with classic Mexican dishes like quesadillas and enchiladas, you’re here for the tacos on handmade tortillas filled with fork-tender carnitas (their specialty), campechano (carnitas and chicharrón), and cecina for $3.50 each. Order them one at a time, top them with the lime, cilantro, onions, pickled vegetables, and the smoky red salsa on your table, and enjoy them while they’re hot—no one will rush you here. The restaurant is laid-back, with no music and retro neon lights, making it perfect for long chats with friends over some tequila." - Guillaume Guevara

"First established in 1945, in an odd no-man’s-land between Chapultepec and Polanco, Los Panchos calls up the Mexican restaurants you may have known in childhood, with a wide-ranging (laminated) menu, whitewashed walls, and potted plants (not an Edison bulb in sight), plus a garrulous, family-friendly set-up serving trough-sized platters of classic Mexican grub like enchiladas, gorditas , moles, and chicken taquitos , tortilla soup, and tostadas, multi-colored margaritas and, most especially, Mexico’s answer to confit, carnitas : utterly delicious, ferociously caloric chunks of pork, fried in their own fat. The restaurant is perfect for larger groups who make their own tacos seasoned with cilantro, chopped onion, and the full hot-sauce portfolio. Nostalgic and lively, nobody leaves hungry."

Get the bistec, good solid tacos - very authentic, low key spot.

Google
We had lunch on a Tuesday, finding the restaurant staff largely catering to tourists. The high prices seemed to reflect past culinary recognitions rather than current quality. While there was a nicer patio, we weren’t allowed to sit there (without any explanation) and were seated in a main dining room that felt more like a TV game room. The food was mediocre - decent but unremarkable, with sides that lacked freshness. A bit disappointing overall given the accolades and expectations we had going in.

Google
Great place to have a good Mexican style breakfast and dinner. We had the Mexican eggs with green spicy sauce and huevos divorciados , our water Mr. Erasmo was very attentive

Google
If you are around the area this is a great place to find real Mexican food made by locals! We were site-seeing after going to visit the “Castillo de Chapultepec” and were lucky enough to find this place. They treated us nicely and it’s a huge place, so odds are you’ll find a place to seat.

Google
Local local local! Go here! Oh and the most chocolatey smooth mole I’ve ever had! YUM! Pair perfectly with a marg for lunch. Don’t need to say any more…

Brad Anderson

Google
We had the cheese enchiladas and chile relleno. The chile relleno could have used some extra cook time but the cheese enchiladas were very tasty and done well. You might be paying a little extra for the location but service and food was fast and perfect for what we were after. If you need something fast and tasty close to the park, give it a go.

Google
Wonderful food. Our server Aurora was so kind and helpful suggesting vegetarian options. We had a great time. Thank you!

Google
I thought the service was lacking. The waitress was getting annoyed because I didn't speak Spanish and wanted to know which types of Carnitas they had. She ignored us when we asked for a check so someone else had to help us. I tipped her still cause and she didn't say thanks. The buche and maciza were ok, too dry and not crunchy, maybe it's a regional thing but I feel like I've had better and more flavourful Carnitas in California for less. Salsas were mild, they should have crushed up tomatoes with water and called it a day. The atmosphere was cool and the portion were indeed huge, three would have been plenty. I just left a bit disappointed considering it's recommended by the locals.

Google
Simple restaurant, huge in size. They may be able to sit 200+ people. We tried the arrachera tacos, the carnitas, the guacamole, and the pico de gallo dip, and everything was great. It's a good place to eat some tacos and watch soccer. They have big screens playing sports in all rooms.

Yelp
Great and fast service. Definitely a local spot. Went around 3PM on a Thursday afternoon but it was still pretty full. There are two sides. One for stand and eat and one for sit down.

Yelp
Tasty good with many healthy and vegetarian options. The Consomé was flavorful with rice vegetables and chick peas. My husband really liked the taco al pastor and the petrolera too, but not as much. The torta was huge, actually like two tortas. My alambre was a delicious mixture of grilled, minced nopales, poblanos, fresh mushrooms and onion. I added Queso Oaxaca. We had enough for almost three meals. We ate outside and sadly people came around begging for money. I don't carry cash anymore. The indoor seating is probably quieter. Service was polite, efficient and helpful in answering questions. No wonder it gets really busy.

Yelp
Marco was an amazing person to meet and talk to. Tacos were fresh and tasty. Cannot recommend this place enough
google avatar

Yelp
I got the drowned tacos which were very good. The service was impeccable. The only thing I didn't like was that the inside of the place was very dark.
google avatar

Sandra K.

Yelp
It was...okay? Everyone was very nice. Things were hectic. Food was good but not like wow if that makes sense.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicioso!

Yelp
We had a nice time and our food was decent. There are tacos to die everywhere around us, and this was underwhelming.
google avatar

George T.

Yelp
The service and ambience was great. The chicarrón and guacamole were excellent. Good drinks. Great place for a few tacos. The desserts were great but the best thing was the corn bread. So good.
google avatar

Yelp
Inviting restaurant, Great service, the food came out quickly, and everything was fresh and delicious! Highly recommend

Eduardo E.

Yelp
Food was not as good. Cold soups and small portions. Gorditas where micro compare to pre COVID perhaps today is 1/3 of the original seize and dry and impossible to eat. The tacos had a good flavor and good portion. We were born in the neighborhood of Colonia Anzures in the 1960s and was a my grandparents, parents and all siblings one of Mexico favorite restaurants. Always great service and pack of people on Sunday. Yesterday the place was empty

Yelp
Great spot in the Polanco neighborhood for food. Came in early for Mexico lunch time with a group of 7. The staff was great and so was the food. Not really sure how to describe the restaurant as it seemed to be laid out like most restaurants in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Ken G.

Yelp
Wow, I really enjoyed this spot...it was a bit of a random find for me and I'm glad I did since the food was excellent! I had the Guacamole, which was very fresh and perfectly prepared (and this is coming from someone who's extremely picky when it comes to guacamole). The main dish was their Enchiladas de Mole - flavorful chicken enchiladas drenched in amazingly made mole...it was the perfect balance of savory and sweet. It was extremely filling and I left a very satisfied customer. The service was decent. I'd recommend this place for anyone looking for authentic Mexican cuisine.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
Had 3 beef tacos, cheese quesadilla and 2 coke lights in a can. I don't speak Spanish and they have a English menu! The server spoke a little English and was ultra helpful, service was great, and food was delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
We had lunch at Los Panchos during our visit to Mexico City earlier this month, and it was a great meal! It's not every day that you eat at a restaurant that has been open since 1945 after all! It's a classic restaurant - comfortable, casual, classic, and delicious! We tried tacos de campechana and carnitas, a quesadilla de flor de calabaza, volteada cecina, and guacamole. Everything was delicious, and the service was great. A great, classic meal. Definitely check it out if you're looking for an unassuming, older spot that still wows in flavor. I'd happily eat here again.

Yelp
This was one of the best breakfasts we got on our trip! The chicken Chilaquiles were so delicious. Pretty spicy but nothing unbearable, and the chips stayed crispy throughout the meal. The coffee was so light and my partner loved his drink as well. The service was attentive and we were in and out quickly.
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Great service and delicious authentic Mexican food. We tried many different dishes. The guacamole and tacos de carnitas al ajillo and enchiladas de mole were my favorites. If you want a sampler, try the plato ranchero. For a different kind of dessert, try the corn bread. It's so good! The drinks were great too. I liked the cerveza con clamato with XX Ámbar.

Bill T.

Yelp
Bought chips and guac. Only gave us 4 chips for the table. Guacamole was rotten tasting. On the other side, I got an omelette with ham onion and Oaxaca cheese. Possibly the best omelette I have ever had. Salsas were great.
google avatar

Lindsey O.

Yelp
Very tasty tacos! I got the taco of carnitas and the taco of cecina de yecapixtla. Both were very good, and I know the carnitas one is the famous one, but that one was just good - the cecina one was excellent. If I were to go back I'd probably just get two of that one because it was just so juicy and tender and tasty. Friendly service. A sink to wash your hands out front without even having to go to the bathroom is nice too. Not the cheapest but not super expensive either.
google avatar

Mary V.

Yelp
Great spot if you are touring bosque de Chapultepec. Quick walk outside the park and has a huge variation of food + drinks. Dessert was our personal favorite! Try the corn cake that comes with 3x ice cream flavors.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
The flavor water was awesome, I wish I could say the same thing about the food. Marginal just keep on going find an other place. I ordered the tacos ahogados. The Chile relleno and the gorditas. Much to be desired. If a tourist trap means anything you. That's what this is. But go and make your own opinion. .
google avatar

Arnaldo G.

Yelp
Excellent place, service impecable, food quality is very high. Will come back. The food is as good as that hole in the wall you live in your neighborhood. A must try when in CDMX.

Mar E.

Yelp
Cockroach floating in rompope. Bone dry carnitas and carne asada. Pan de elote, also dry. Crepe, mediocre/soggy. Spent over $60 USD. Drinks were extremely sweet and very little alcohol. There are much better places within walking distance of hotels.
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
We were a party of 15. Mostly people who grew up in Mexico City. Each one of us enjoyed every dish ordered. The décor of the restaurant is quite simple but the food is great.
google avatar

Alejandra C.

Yelp
This place is great! everything we order was amazing, service was great, fast and nice!
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
I travel to CDMX about every 6 weeks and this is definitely my favorite taco place in the City. Never miss it. Order the straight taco de masiza, aka carnitas, you won't be disappointed
google avatar

David Z.

Yelp
This place is close to the park and serves quite good tacos. It comes in two types: their "famous" taco and the taco with cheese. If you want a heartier meal, there's also an option to buy 8 tacos at a discounted price of $135. It was good -- I was a fan of the taco with cheese. But I wasn't blown away.
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered a soup with chicken, avocado, and rice in chicken broth, and green enchiladas to split between two. Coming in at 3pm on a Friday, it was a little under a 10 minute wait before we were seated. They had English menus for us, but our server only spoke a little English so it was up to me to utilize my Spanish skills once again. Luckily, after ordering in Spanish at so many restaurants before, I was prepared. The food was all decent- I wouldn't call it amazing but I also wouldn't say I regret eating it (as I was starving coming in, so anything would have been delicious). The soup was good when I squeezed an entire lime's with of juice into it, but it had an overwhelming amount of chicken. The avocado was a nice creamy touch though, and I definitely wish there were more of it. Enchiladas are usually what I get at Tex Mex places back home, so I wanted to see how this would stack up. Sadly, I think I still like Tex Mex more. However, it came with a good amount of cheese on top, and the sauce was pretty good. I only wish that it had been a bit spicier. Overall, I probably wouldn't recommend to a friend, but it was decent, and the prices were reasonable.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY A MUST! First off, stand at the bar...its the only way. I have never gone inside because well...I like to be where the action is. Standing at the bar I feel like I am part of the excitement, face to face with the person handing me each taco. I always start with BUCHE and then go for something a little less wild, maybe maciza but you know you go and do your thing. Im sure you won't regret it!
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
The choice for carnitas in the Polanco district. Came high recommended by locals and hotel concierge alike. The place was busy, had that "old but classy" Mexican restaurant feel. The carnitas were freshly cooked, well chopped and came wrapped in a warm freshly made 6" corn tortilla. Juicy, and quite porky tasting, these ere some of the best I've ever tried. And a ridiculous deal at $1.40 each.

Cristian G.

Yelp
Nothing special and very overpriced. The flavor was ok but food was just warm which is my biggest issue. We ate there once and never considered going back and our Hotel was the Grand Fiesta Americana Chapultepec next door. We found other taquerias with better food.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
I don't usually bother with writing bad reviews, but I feel obligated to after tonight. I've never had drier carnitas and gorditas in my life. It was tough to swallow. The salsa was bland and not spicy at all. It was $35 for my friend and I to eat and have a couple beers. Don't do what I did.
google avatar

Nomêr D.

Yelp
The service was pretty quick but it was a bit creepy that everyone who worked there literally just stood there 2-3 feet away just staring at you while they gossip and watch you while you eat. I just lost my appetite but the Food was okay. Unfortunately i had better and found better places to eat mole de olla and arrachera
google avatar

Linda T.

Yelp
Girlfriend doesn't eat any kind of meat except chicken. She orders two tostadas, pollo and pollo con mole, and the waiter comes out with a tostada de pata. We were confused, told him that we didn't order that. He proceeds to argue with us that we definitely did order and stands there for a bit arguing and then later goes and talks about us nastily to his coworkers right where we can hear him. WE SPEAK SPANISH. After all that, they didn't even take the order off our bill. Carnitas was dry, tacos dorados was dry and overcooked. Gf said pollo con mole was okay.

Ariel B.

Yelp
Great place for traditional Mexican fare. The service was excellent. We had a party of 9 and everything we ordered was good and fresh. Their beer (cobriza) is also very good. I strongly recommend this place.
google avatar

Alex T.

Yelp
Since the restaurant was close to our Hotel, we went there a lot, even for breakfast, which we tried to keep light - usually guacamole (very fresh) and squash soup with squash flowers, which was simple and heartwarming. The most interesting thing is pig organs - you have to go outside the dining room where they are all heaped in a huge tray and point out the ones you want - pork skin was our favorite - very gelatinous and not at all greasy. Then they would make you a taco from it. Gorditas were also very good, as well as chicken mole - you get to choose breast or leg. Maybe is not a place one needs to seek out - but as a neighborhood restaurant, nothing more to ask for. Not to forget - they gave my wife a gift of their handkerchief (part of the waiter's uniform), since we were there often enough.
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
Great carnitas with fresh tortillas, give the guacamole a shot too. Orange juice is freshly squeezed. Carolinas salad and tortilla soup weren't bad either. Overall friendly service. They have an English menu (with fewer options).
google avatar

Melay A.

Yelp
Love the chicken mole and chicharon. For desserr we had cheese plate with fruit quince
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Great place for a family dinner. Atmosphere is pleasantly simple and intentionally kept traditional: white table cloths accompanies the metal/vinyl furniture. Dishes are great with a few exceptions: red and green enchiladas for some reason were lacking much flavor and were on a drier side. Mole on the other hand had pretty much erased the negative experience of the other favors. Steak here is something worth trying. Warning: it is not your typical American steak. By looks of it reminded more of the ahi tuna: seared on the outside and pink on the inside. Tender and juicy nevertheless. Deserts are quite standard and lack exclusiveness. It is traditional however. Cinnamon coffee (cafe ole) is just overly sweet. Despite the initial appearance, service here is akin 4* star establishment: prompt, professional and to the point. Hugo is an excellent metrdotel. This place would be a good place for a quick bite as well as a fully fledged family dinner. Regardless of your intentions you should be pretty pleased with the value/quality/service provided. Recommended.
google avatar

Leslie G.

Yelp
This restaurant is a good option close to the Museum. I had the hongas quesadilla and guacamole. Oh, and beer, of course. Other vegetarian options include other types of quesadillas, and cheese enchiladas. The spicy carrots on the table are excellent, I love them. Service was fast and friendly, which was surprising because it looks like this place could seat a ton of people. They have a menu in English, but I'd suggest looking at the Spanish menu if you can read Spanish - the English menu had some weird translations that didn't make sense to me. It looked like right at the entrance you could order street tacos and other small items. If you want to sit down and eat at the actual restaurant, you need to go a bit further in and speak to the host/hostess.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Great place...good service, clean, and the price is right! Start with the guacamole and chicharron. They specialize in carnitas so you must try them, they were delicious.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Solid four stars. Good food, good service, and great prices. This feels like a locals place and the service reflects that. Most of the places I've experienced seemed catered to tourists. Ie lots of up-selling, pressures pace, way over staffed, etc... definitely recommend this spot. I would absolutely return.
google avatar

Randy H.

Yelp
Oh those chilaquiles verde. Where had you been all my life? So crunchy and flavorful. Ok, a bit melodramatic, but damn those chilaquiles were good. If you're sensitive to spicy food, get something else, b/c they have a nice little kick. The guac appetizer was fine, wasn't impressed with the chili relleno, but those chilaquiles are all you need....
google avatar

Vicki M.

Yelp
We found the food to be very bland. The carnitas had very little flavor and no seasoning, and they were dry. The corn tortillas were good. The mole was okay; ordered the chicken mole enchiladas but would have preferred the mole poblano if it had been on the English menu. The quesadillas con Queso had a LOT of queso. Overall, we were not impressed. The service was okay but not great; for example, we would have ordered dessert if we had not had to wait so long for our server.
google avatar

Nat T.

Yelp
Very tasty foods with reasonable prices. Better be there early otherwise the place can be packed.
google avatar

Adrián D.

Yelp
Pos vamos.
google avatar

Clare S.

Yelp
This might be blasphemy, but I feel pretty meh about los panchos. The food is alright, but I think you can find way better tacos in DF for cheaper. Overall, just not impressed with the flavor of the meat.
google avatar

Frances M.

Yelp
Great service, so tipped 15%. The food was standard Mexican. Clean, good red salsa and pickled carrots/jalapenos.
google avatar

Beverly R.

Yelp
I've been traveling back n'forth from CA to Mexico City for almost 2 years and this is the spot. No frills just GOOD damn food. Don't sleep on this gem.

Juan B.

Yelp
Great food at low price. Clean, nothing fancy. Cocinita pibil great and one of the best sopa de tortilla
