Los Planes De Renderos - Review - Excelsior - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Among the sea of curtido and salsa in the Excelsior, Los Planes De Renderos holds its own with Salvadoran classics. Join the neighborhood families and solo diners tearing into chicharron-filled pupusas, and round out the meal with the pollo encebollado with buttery onions and a side salad. And don’t be deterred by the seemingly small space—a dining room is hiding on the second floor. We like coming here for unhurried weeknight dinners or big group-sized takeout operations that won’t completely empty your wallet." - Julia Chen

Google
A true treasure. I have been going to this place since I was a kid. The food is authentic, flavorful and well portioned. They are the only pupuseria that makes pupusas from rice flour. Give this place a chance and you won’t be disappointed.

Google
This was so disappointing as I expected the pupusas to be salvadorean pupusas or at least taste good. The pupusas are huge and made with minimal filling, very heavy and greasy as well as tasteless. I felt like I was eating a tortilla instead of a pupusa. The tomato sauce was tasteless, extremely runny and watered down. Never again will I visit this spot and spend over $100 on their food.

Google
The pollo asado (grilled chicken) plate $16 comes with rice, salad and two pupusas (flat bread.) The lack of seasoning on the salad was refreshing. If it wasn't for the flat bread, I would have still been hungry as the single chicken thigh was not enough for dinner. They were quite busy when I came at around 8pm on a Thursday.

Google
Atol shuco, a bit fermented hot drink that’s made with black masa flour, alguashte (ground pepitas)and whole beans, it can be an acquired taste if you never tried it before. The tamal de elote that can be prepared two ways, plain and fried, naturally sweet prepared on a corn husk and they are served with crema Salvadoreña. The pupusas are famous in the area and they are extra cheesy with the homemade quality that is hard to emulate. The platanos fritos are served with beans and sour cream. The camarones empanizados, (breaded shrimp) are served with beans and rice, salad and homemade tortillas. Tables are located on the second floor with tireless servers going up and down the stairs that provided excellent service on a busy evening.

Google
Wow!! so disappointed, about their service, the portions and price. I don’t mind paying $12 dollars for a full plate or even more. But they will rip you off if you don’t check your food before leaving the restaurant. Either missing food or put, half a portion for a full price plate. The food taste is good but service is horrible👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

First time the other day! So glad we found you. The pupusas were delicious and service kind and friendly. Not just cash, we paid with a credit card. Cute little upstairs seating to get out from the cold. See you next time!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Los Planes De Renderos in San Francisco, and it was truly a delightful experience from start to finish. The staff members were incredibly welcoming and attentive, making us feel right at home from the moment we stepped in. Their warmth and genuine care for their customers added an extra layer of enjoyment to our meal. Not only was the service impeccable, but the food itself was simply outstanding. Each dish was prepared with care and expertise, bursting with authentic flavors that transported me to El Salvador with every bite. From their mouthwatering pupusas to their tantalizing plantain dishes, every item on the menu was a testament to the culinary mastery of the chefs. Overall, my visit to Los Planes De Renderos was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of impeccable service and exquisite cuisine made for an unforgettable dining experience. I can't wait to return and indulge in their delectable offerings once again. Kudos to the entire team for their dedication to excellence! I would like to thank Beatrice and Sonia personally for the exceptional experience and their pupusas are a must try!

Yelp
Hello, I would like to recommend this place. The food is delicious. This day we tried salpicon, pupusas, and grilled meat. Everything was very good. Thank you so much for your attention:)) muy rico y no olviden su agua de marańon y horchata:)))

Yelp
This place fulfilled my pupusa craving. The pupusa are a generous size, they are $4 each. I ordered a revuelta which is filled with cheese, beans, and shredded pork. Also, ordered the beans and cheese pupusa. And of course I had to order the platanos Fritos with sour cream and refried beans- $11. I'm a little picky when it comes to eating beans, but these were good. My food came out within a reasonable time. I came in 30 minutes before closing and I did not feel rushed. The service was great. The restaurant is small there were only three tables. It is located in San Francisco so expect parking to be a hassle. I will for sure be returning.

Yelp
Y'all shouldn't go here if you don't want to be addicted to the authentic Salvadorian specialties these beautiful women are cooking up! I am 40 and have been coming here since I was thirteen with my family. This is a no frills place so if you're looking for some fancy dining experience this isn't for you! That's not to say it's not clean! This is tu tia's house adorned with all the decorations straight from Salvador! Be weary of the extra steep stairs up to the main dining area. The service is always fast and they are always so sweet. I love this place...it's been my secret go to spot forever! Mucho amor to Los Planes!

Yelp
One of the best, if not the best pupusa spots in the Bay Area. Pupusas are fresh, crispy, moist, and flavorful. If you ain't never been, you gotta go!!!

Yelp

Yelp
Almost didn't make it here. Almost ... My friend and I did a few laps looking for this place and missed it until we parked, walked and found it. Another instance where Yelp steered me wrong. Someone had pinned the location on the wrong corner on Yelp. I added a correction but don't know if it'll take or not. Anyway ... It's not just take out. Know that it's two story. First level is the kitchen and I can only guess a waiting area. Dining area is up on two. If it's not busy, there's enough room and tables for a large group. Service was good. So was dinner. We shared: Platanos de Fritos Atol De Elote Platos Tipico #2 I've had Salvadoran cuisine before but not to the point that I can say this was authentic or not. I just know what I like or not. And I enjoyed the dishes even with the different textures from what I've had in the past. More on that later. I especially enjoyed the Atol De Elote. The sweetness wasn't overly done and I think I would have that again as dessert. The fried plantains mixed with the beans and sour cream surprised me. I wouldn't have ever thought to mix it altogether. Enjoyed it and would definitely have it again. I mentioned texture before. So, the Tamal - wasn't as firm as I've had and used to. I can't think of a better word but it was mushy. I liked it - would have liked it spicier and firmer or denser. The pupusas were thicker than I've had before too. I'm mentioning this knowing that there are regional differences with all kinds of food. I cleared my plate and let that be an indication of how I felt about my experience. Almost forgot to mention - street parking. And cash only.

Yelp
Parking on mission speaks for itself, iykyk. I so happen to get lucky with parking so I was even more excited to try this place. Upon entering I can see about 4 tables that seat 2. I'm wondering how my party of 3 will fit. Oh, you go upstairs? I felt like I was in someone's home. Upstairs we found more tables for more than two people. Our waitress was super sweet and attentive. We ordered what we came for, pupusas. On top of that I wanted a Salvadorian tamale and yuca frita (fried). The yuca was too crunchy and rooty, I'll pass. I liked the tamale, my mom said she didn't find an olive so she wasn't impressed. The pupusas were too cheesy and greasy. I got Pupusas Revueltas and the pork didn't taste right to me. Some pupusas places just aren't for me and this place wasn't it.

Mariela R.

Yelp
Very good traditional Salvadoran food. A delight of typical dishes for a day of craving to try dishes from your country.

Yelp
Las mejores pupusas de San Pancho!!! This is the spot! Iykyk.. todo delicious!!!aaaaaayyyyyyyyy!!!!

ENRIQUE M.

Yelp
This place never fail with there authentic pupusas. They are made to order and just the right amount of whatever ingredients you requested. I personally always get chicharon with cheese, no beans. Some prefer with beans I dont.

Yelp
**November 2022: Saturday Evening Visit** This is VERY hard to find. My friend and I drove around the area 3 times until we decided to just park and walk around. Eventually we found it and hopped in to enjoy some authentic Salvadorian food. I can't say I'm a connoisseur as I've only had pupusas a handful of times but do enjoy this cuisine. The restaurant is two floors with the main first floor as the kitchen and host table. Since we wanted to dine in we were directed to the second floor and given menus. We ordered the following Dinner Plata de Fritos Con Cream Y Fritos (Fried plantain served with refried beans and sour cream): This was fantastic. I would not have thought to pair these things together but the textures and flavor profile all worked really well together. Definitely a hit! Atol De Elote: Sweet Corn Soup - this was a nice hot dessert option that I gobbled up. Pupusas: pork, beans, and cheese - this was okay. They are handmade, but I felt it wasn't fried enough for me and was a tad doughy. Overall it was a nice authentic experience! Also - Cash only!

Yelp
the BEST pupusas I've ever had. a hole in the wall restaurant, and it is better if you speak spanish. not necessary, but helpful. cash only, and small front/downstairs. but its authentic af. there is a stairway that leads to a dining area on the upstairs, which took me and my friend by surprise. I had always been wanting to try this place when I find myself in the area on Wednesdays, but they are closed on this day during the week. so do not come on a Wednesday. I ordered a Plato Tipico #2. BOMB AF. and I loved that I got a little taste of more than just a pupusa in the plate, but also a tamale and empanada. I also got a hot chocolate, which tasted as I expected and my friend got an horchata, which I would say was also delicious.

Josue M.

Yelp
I am giving a low rating because of the following factors. Food has appearance to be rushed, excessively greasy. I ordered 2 Pupusas with beans and cheese, however, the ration of cheese to beans is greater. I would not recommend this location. Great service, good atmosphere but poor food quality. I used to come to this location before 2020. I will state that since then this location has changed, it could be management or maybe they have changed their kitchen team.

Yelp
Located in San Francisco's excelsior district is a humble little pupuseria called Los Planes de Renderos. If you're looking for some comforting Salvadorian cuisine they've got you covered! Personal faves are Queso con Lorroco and Revuelta which is a mix a delicious pork / bean / cheese stuffed inside a corn masa Pupusa!! I always order "Chicharron con Yuca frita" and "Platanos Maduros" that's sweet plantains you can dip in savory refried beans and sour cream! Remember to top your pupusas off with curtido (pickled cabbage) and Salsita!!
google avatar

Xian Y.

Yelp
They make the best pupusas. Better than Panchitas in my opinion. They really fill it up.

Sing M.

Yelp
Very tasty Pupusas. Large and varied menu. They have Atole de Elote which I think is hard to find.

Yelp
This is the most authentic Salvadorian food our family has had in San Francisco, pretty much outside of El Salvador or our family home. From the breakfast platters to the dinner plates everything is well seasoned & great portions. Of course everyone's favorites are available: the pupusas, pasteles & tamales which are all so tasty and made fresh! It feels like I'm at my Aunt's house or my Grandma's house. There's no glitz, no glamour, just really good food, ensalada de fruta & horchata drinks too! My go to dessert are the empanadas de leche which is essentially plantain used as the dough & stuffed with custard, that are then deep fried & served with sprinkled sugar on top. Trust me when I say it is worth my trip to the ATM to get our cash before coming to indulge, as long as we can have the most flavorful tastes of El Salvador! 10/10 Recommendation! The only thing to keep in mind is it's a "Cash Only," establishement so bring your cash. (PS several major banks are walking distance to this restaurant & they also have an ATM machine onsite)

Fabiola G.

Yelp
Restaurant is over rated. Food was not the best. Traveled from afar not impressed. I have tasted better in Houston Tx

Mark B.

Yelp
Food tasted good and it service was fast I recommend my friend for Daly City as a visit this restaurant, if they like and also kill their friends
google avatar

Ziyan C.

Yelp
We're lucky to have a legit pupuseria around the corner! I'm used to pupusas being small and needing three to fill me up. So I got three, and even though we started lunch late and were starving, it was too much food! THE WAIT: None on a Monday at 1:30pm. There are only a few tables on the ground floor, which got crowded as we were 3 adults and 2 strollers. There were more tables upstairs, but there were only accessible by stairs. THE SERVICE: A little slow. We had sat for a while before they even brought out the menus. THE COST: $46 total (cash only) including tips for lunch for three. MUST-HAVES: Zucchini pupusa! THE FOOD: (See my photos for more details.) * Tamale with creme - 4 stars * Chiccarones pupusa - 3 stars * Zucchini pupusa - 4.5 stars * Pupusa Frijoles - 4 stars * Pupusa Revuelta - 4 stars

Bill H.

Yelp
Our go to spot for pupusas, really good food and friendly people. There is also an upstairs area if you want to eat there.

Yelp
Firstable. Good services and good food, pupusas and salvadoreñas comida. Recomendable

Salvador S.

Yelp
Best pupusas in sf. Parking sucks in the area. They take cards. I didn't dine in so don't know the service but food was bomb.
google avatar

Jasmine D.

Yelp
Never disappoints especially when chicken soup is the best remedy for a cold. Always quick and easy pick up! Definitely recommend
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Salvadorean food say no more! LOVE the revuelta & the zucchini pupusas! Cheesy goodness! Parking is not the best but so worth the trip every time.
google avatar

Sil L.

Yelp
I've past this place a number of times and never noticed they sold papusas. After a friend recommended the place and I ordered from there, it has become my new "go to" for papusas. I find them to be more authentic than some other well known restaurants serving papusas. The only unfortunate thing is they are such a small operation they don't offer service through delivery apps.
google avatar

Vero N.

Yelp
Ordered some Salpicon ( to go ) & payed $12.50 for that amount of Salpicon. It's so unbelievable man. Definitely should be ashamed of yourselves . I've ordered some In the past but never to the point where I get this little amount . The pupusas are decent. Last time I ordered only pupusas and out of the 12 i got, 3 of them were tortillas. I really enjoyed coming here as it was super close to my house ( parking sucks tho' ) but that was such a rip off . I always call them when they messed up my orders but man this sh** was the last draw .
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
We tried just about every vegetarian option on the menu and it was all delicious. High quality and super tasty. And super friendly staff... they even helped me carry our huge take out order to my car
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
I love supporting local businesses. This mom and pop place is a hidden gem. It's located next door to a bakery and in front of the 29 bus stop. My go to for pupusa's and fried plantains. "Que rico!" The women that run this joint are always nice, the service is amazing and their food is consistent. I definitely recommend zucchini and cheese or loroca pupusa's. The plantains are the best, not dry and not greasy something about that sweet and salty at the same damn time. I've had their chicken tamales wrapped in banana leafs. Good stuff.
google avatar

Colin H.

Yelp
Fresh pupusas made to order. This was my first times eating these little corn masa pockets oozing with cheese. For under $2 (around 1.70 - 1.75 depending on what filling you want) a piece, the price cannot be beat! They taste like a little quesadilla made with corn flower. My personal favorite was the con queso y loroco. I also tried the carnitas, and the carnitas and beans. The loroco had more cheese and therefore much more deliciousness. The pupusas also came with a side of vinegary coleslaw and a red tomato sauce (a little too thin to be salsa?). The sauce went good with the pork and bean pupusas because they had less cheese and were definitely a bit drier. If you are going to order to go, call in ahead. It's about a 20 minute wait as they are made fresh. It can be easy to miss if you are looking for Los Planes De Renderos, its located on a side street of mission with a big sign that says Pupuseria y Restaurant.

Veronica R.

Yelp
Great mom and pop place. As a fellow Salvadoran, I will 100% be coming back.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
Los Planes de Renderos Papuseria serves delicious papusas and the people are really nice. Yum!
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
This is by far one of my fav Pupuseria places to come to. Me and my family have been coming here since we were little. And they always make you feel welcome. The staff is so kind and on top of things when it comes to their customers. Def reccomend if you are near here to try it out you will not regret it.
google avatar

Rick V.

Yelp
Best Salvadorian Food I've ever had in the Bay ! I have taken my friends to this place so they get to taste authentic Salvadorian food, so far no one's disappointed. Cash only though
google avatar

Lisa U.

Yelp
I purchased 30 pupusas for NYE and they failed to give the the cabbage that goes the pupusas. Horrible customer service.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Food was good. I liked the food. I did not like the cashier, who stole money from us at this cash only joint when trying to pay. When confronted by person and witness, she denied it. It was a noticeable $10 missing... from a bill that was questionably rounded on to begin with. Environment looks like something that would receive a D grade on health review, but you expect that from the front anyways.
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
Really good pupusas, but I tried calling a number of times to place an order and kept getting the busy signal or no answer
google avatar

Nancy R.

Yelp
Sunday 10-3-21 my husband ordered sopa de maricos and it had no flavor tried adding salt and hot sauce but it tasted the same only 2 spoonfuls & the soup was left as is. Pupusas de Frijoles con queso weren't good either they need a better cook in the kitchen.
google avatar

Priscilla C.

Yelp
Best pupusas and Curtido in town. My family and I always order the pupusa plate. 2 pupusas with beans and rice. The best.
google avatar

D. M.

Yelp
Had the tamale, pupusas de revuelta, and empanadas de leche. Never been let down. The food is very good. My favorite are the chicken tamales and empanadas. The pupusas were good but not stuffed like others I've tried. The tamales have chunks of chicken, potato, and sometimes an onion or bell pepper. They are softish and super tasty. The empanadas are deep fried plantains that has a gel like milk with cinnamon and sugar. To die for! Been coming here since I was a teenager!
google avatar

Niki D.

Yelp
Delicious pupuses! Wish I lived closer or they had a shop in my neighborhood :) had a great vegetarian selection
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Pupusa's are delicious here! Definately worth the try. This as the first place that I have ever had pupusas and this place was my standard. I really love how cirspy and fresh the tortilla and fillings were. My favorite ones to order are the cheese and bean as well as the shredded pork. The pork is absolutely delicious as it is tender and juicy. The cheese and bean pupusa is really delicious and the ratio from cheese to bean is perfect. Also the salad/garnish it comes with is delicious. Just having that alone as a side dish is honestly perfect to me. I wish it had more kick to it (spicy). One thing that I have to mention is be careful if you're vegetarian/vegan because they cook their beans in lard. I believe there is an alternative where you can ask for black beans instead of refried beans, but again it is best to ask. Another special mention on the menu is to get their horchata. It is seriously tasty and it will lighten up your day. Everyone loves a good horchata drink! In terms of food and service it is pretty good. Sometimes the wait for the food can be long , but for the most part on average it comes in around 10-15 min. If you're ever in the neighborhood or in the mood for pupusas I'd say this place is a must. It is also right outside the bus stop so it's super easy to get to.

Karla M.

Yelp
This place makes me feel like Im back in El Salvador. I like their yuca frita, chilate and pupusas de arroz!
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
I finally had my first pupusa at Los Planes De Renderos Pupuseria. And I loved it! My friend brought me here and applauded that this place has the best pupusas in the city. And she's right! Their pupusas are delicious, with the right amount of filling and texture. We shared and ordered 3 pupusas with queso (cheese) and loroco, along with horchata (housemade). They also serve free chips & salsa. This whole meal cost under $10, which is such a great deal. So, I'd you are craving pupusas or want to try out a pupusa for the first time like I did, come to this place!
google avatar

Elaine S.

Yelp
Pupusas revueltas. So delicious! Thicker and more filling than other places. Parking can be a challenge. Can't wait to go back to try tamale, empanadas , pasteles and plantains.
google avatar

Lolia S.

Yelp
This hole in the wall pupusa specialist makes basic corn and rice flour pupusas to order. There aren't many pupusa varieties, just variations of shredded pork (chicharron), cheese, refried beans and lorroco. They also have tacos, empanadas, and Salvadorean tamales. I waited about 15 minutes for my pupusas to be made. There wasn't much décor to look at or seating downstairs, so I recommend going to the Salvadorean bakery (Pacitas Bakery) next door. * Pupusa revuelta ($1.85 each): Flavorful but greasy corn pupusa filled with creamy beans, pork and cheese and slaw and hot sauce on the side. The cabbage slaw is slightly spicy, crunchy and tangy. Fulfills the pupusa craving but it's basic and greasy. Cash only.

Yelp
Pupusas. Made with Love. I want to gain a healthy 5-10 lbs to counter balance my speedy metabolism. Yes, I've tried the weight gainers and some bulking techniques but I want to do it more naturally. If I don't eat something 2 hours prior to sleep, I'll be STARVING, drop a good couple of pounds in weight overnight and wake up to 6-pack abs by sunrise. If I overeat, I'll have zero appetite in the morning, still drop a few pounds and go binge-eating by the afternoon. It seems very unreachable especially since fast food is out of the question, and with my metabolism always in overdrive. That's why I decided to hop on a Latin diet. Who doesn't love the exotic flavors and fresh ingredients of Latin America? And let's not forget my favorite day of the week, Taco Tuesdays! That's where Los Planes de Renderos falls in. This Excelsior district Salvadoran hole-in-the-wall serves up some of the better Latin eats around, with a nack for homemade Pupusas. Taco De Pollo $4 - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5q4iWQKGIcFl6KfyWEI7-A?select=y114RxyF51alXRsGJBd6CA It was a ton of wholesome grilled chicken smothered in tomatoy hot sauce, fused with rice and refried beans and toppled all on a warm corn tortilla. Oh, and there was also a salad (whatever). The chicken was soft, tender, and succulent with the hot sauce giving a distinct kick of flavor to each bite. It was a very messy victory. Pupusa de Chicharron y Queso $2 per - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/5q4iWQKGIcFl6KfyWEI7-A?select=HZqcse-Uuo87swyKvkYgpA With a wide variety of different pupusas all for a measly $2 each, my girlfriend and I opted for the shredded pork and cheese. All pupusa orders are served with their house concoction salsa rojo and a cabbage slaw. Each pupusa was the side of a huge oversize pancake. The shredded pork was evenly distributed with the ooey gooey cheesy goodness webbing through interior. Top it with the slaw and add the salsa to adjust to your spiciness liking, these things are simply bomb! Los Planes de Renderos Pupuseria is special. Not just because they have the longest name I've ever seen and my inability to roll my "R's" doesn't serve it justice but this hole-in-the-wall has heart. There's only the owner and the chef running the show here and it does get surprisingly busy. The owner kindly takes your order while the chef is flipping dozens of pupusas on the grill, like a boss. It's not about making an extra buck or caring about having the better dining experience here but about serving homemade-to-order great food to the community at dirt cheap prices so that everybody may enjoy. Remember Sam Wo, everybody? Kind owner, fast service, great authentic food, all without breaking the bank. Cash only and don't forget to order a Horchata!

Yelp
These ladies need to step up their crap attitude. Poor service day in and day out , over the phone and in person. I checked the health score today, they were graded a little over a week ago. A solid 84, on a big red poster. Dirty looking and now we know they have dirty food. On a positive note, regardless of what's in the pupusas, they are pretty delicious, so they earn themselves 2 stars in my opinion.
