The Best Restaurants in Jersey City | Eater NY

"A Oaxacan sit-down restaurant with a brisk to-go business on the site, this Central Avenue Mexican spot sells verde or mole tamales in the morning along with omelets and chilaquiles, followed by lunch and dinner options too. Consider nachos, carne asada tlayudas, gorditas, and flautas to share. — Melissa McCart" - Melissa McCart

Solid 4.0, not INCREDIBLE but definitely still good! Just not over the top or somewhere I’d try and convince peeps to go to.

This is one of my favorite place to eat in the Heights. Their tacos are some of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. When you dine in you can expect free chips and salsa! The meat is tender and flavorful. Always consistent every time I have the chance to go. Street parking only. Best chance to find a spot is probably off Central at least during the day.

My husband always requests a Mexican feast for his birthday and Los Tres Chilitos delivered (literally and figuratively). We ordered on a Wednesday at a weird time, for a late lunch/early dinner at around 4. We had leftovers and then some, although the leftovers were definitely not great the next day, so I wouldn't recommend over ordering like we did. Here is everything we ate: Milanesa Pollo Torta - honestly, this one is a classic. You can't go wrong with a torta, especially one with breaded chicken Pancita (tripe soup served with a side of rice and tortillas) - I've never had Mexican tripe soup before so I was intrigued, and also was in the mood for soup. This was a little too rich for my taste. Squeezing some lime into it helped a bit though Combo #6 (grilled skirt steak with avocado salad, cactus, baby onions, and a flauta) - the steak looks like it has the potential to be dry and chewy but luckily, it was the complete opposite. They also give a good portion size for $20 Mole Tamale (shredded chicken breast in mole sauce) - this was not bad. I think it may have been one of only a handful of times I've eaten a tamale. Not something I'd usually order Pastor Tlayudas (large crispy tortilla, topped with your meat of choice, refried beans, lettuce, avocado, pico, and cheese) - I have never had one of these before nor have I even heard of it when I saw it on the menu. Thank you LTC for bringing this into our lives. This was the star of the show. It was also a lot bigger than we expected. It's pretty much the size of a large pizza and is loaded with toppings. Would definitely order this again but this is one of those things you need to finish because it doesn't taste the best the next day. I would probably get something other than al pastor though, because it was a bit dry. Definitely want to check this place out in person next time - especially since burritos are not available on any of the delivery apps for some reason.

Up charge of 20% at Los tres chilitos on Central Ave. charge me a serives fee, tax fee and card fee. Waitress came back with a total $84… when I asked the man in the front about the change from the first check, he told me that it is a card fee. I told him— Your waitress need to be truthful! I am not coming back here again. I understand inflation!!! How are you going to charge me a service fee with 3 adults& 2 kids which equal 20% fee. They didnt give me the option if I want to even freely chose to tip—-at all!!!! When you are already charging me a service fee!!!!!! I wonder how many other ppl that don’t review their receipts!!! What they get charge!!!!!! I would have left her $20 cash tip!!!!

Great atmosphere dine in. Burrito was a amazing and worth the price of $12. Free chips and salsa was good too! Clean restrooms. Green salsa was amazing with the burrito! Parking may be hard to find. I was lucky and found a parking next to the restaurant for free as it was Saturday after 6PM (before 6PM, it is metered parking).

Google
Great food and reasonably priced. We have been going there for years. So why a 1 star review, they are absolutely horrible when it comes to ordering food through GrubHub. 1- they almost always forget one item (usually a smaller item) when you place a medium sized order so we’ve taken to ordering a side of fires or something in the hope that’s what they forget. 2-they send the wrong food way too often to be a fluke. We have ordered from there for a number of years and I’m finally writing this review, so it’s a pattern. Order steak and you might get chicken kinda stuff like tonight. Not the first time and probably won’t be the last time. Again, we love this place and enjoy going there but when it comes to delivery, it’s a roll of the dice whether you’re gonna get your order. We will still order from there because, as I have said, it’s really good food.

Google
Charged 29$ for 1 order of Tacos and a Horchata. Don't get me wrong. The food hit the spot, but the price is insane. Definitely scamming.

Google
Cute little spot. Menus is a bit overwhelming but only because this place has so many options to choose from. We started with chips and salsa. The chips were good but the salsa was watered down and was a bit too ketchup flavored for our liking. We ordered the enchiladas suza, tacos (2 alabrams 2 Al pastor), and rice and beans. The food was more flavorful than they look. Good not great.

Yelp
Mé cobraron la propina sin avisar, y ademas la pina colada estaba llena de hielo, casi sin bebida.

Yelp
Our favorite Mexican place. Can't get wrong with anything on their menu. Good service and ambiance too.

Yelp
This is a very authentic Mexican food place. I have been here a couple of times and love the food. Most of the customers are Spanish speaking so the menu is mostly in Spanish with some English. Also the waitresses mainly speak Spanish with some English. They are very friendly. The first time I went I had the Quesadilla Mexicana - it is slightly different to the quesadilla commonly served in America. It was very delicious and definitely recommend trying it. The next time I tried the been tongue tacos, and also "gorditas mixtas" where you can pick two flavors (I had chicken and then Mexican cheese). The serving size is very large and I was very full afterwards. The flavor was good, and they also serve complimentary chips and salsa while you are waiting for the food. The prices are very good - around $13-14 for a large meal for one person, under $20 including tax and tip. The food also comes quickly and is very delicious and filling. They have a lot of different authentic Mexican food options - far more than the usual tacos, burritos etc. If you are in the area and want some cheap, tasty and filling Mexican food then I would certainly recommend coming to this place.

Yelp
I've not had this great of Mexican food since living in Texas! Holy cow it's so good and the staff is so nice! Definitely stop and check out this gem of a restaurant

Yelp
We got takeout, and unfortunately the food was just bad and overpriced. The vegetarian burrito was full of bland rice, very little beans, cheese, or other flavor. Vegetable quesadilla had almost no cheese, had large chunks of zucchini, soggy tomatoes, and sweet canned corn. Vegetable nachos had literal cheese wiz on them. Lengua and pastor tacos were okay. The salsas they provided were flavorless and watery. The guac needed lime and salt. They were out of tamales which we had really wanted to try. Each item is $12-13 but made with cheap ingredients. I would recommend going to Cemitas Puebla in Union City instead for better value and taste.

Yelp
I ordered the enchiladas suizas...it was a bit soggy by the time it arrived since there was a lot of sauce. The sauce was spicier than I expected but not overwhelmingly so & I liked the taste. Wasn't a fan of the rice that came with it. Given all the good reviews I would like to try some other things on the menu!

Yelp
Definitely out go to spot in the Heights for good authentic Mexican food! Their Nachos are always on our table at every visit. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately I did not take pics of the food from my last visit. The only issue I have is they seem to have started adding 18% tip automatically to the bill regardless of ppl . It was only myself and my 2 kids and they added the tip to the bill. Just make sure you check your bill before accidentally tipping twice.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this restaurant 2 years ago for cinco de Mayo. The food is authentic, always fresh and full of flavor. My favorite meal/ dessert is the shrimp taco which is mouth watering and a delectable piece of tres leche cakes YUM! Unfortunately a lot of Mexican restaurants compromise the flavor of their food by adding less seasoning to appease the western palate. Fortunately that not the case here! Thank you for making mouth watering Mexican food every single time!

Yelp
Think I may have finally found a solid Mexican option in the area. Got delivery from here one night and while the wait was long, they got the order correct and the food was very tasty! Definitely get the enchiladas with green sauce, one of their specialities. I also tried the Gordita trio- very tasty as well. My husband was feeling a bit under the weather so we got the chicken soup, which really helped with his cold. Tasty!

Yelp
The BEST Mexican tamales you will ever have. Service is great and the authenticity and atmosphere of the restaurant was very friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
Food was authentic and flavorful. I enjoyed every bite. I ordered their tamales and i especially enjoyed the red one. I will be ordering more soon.

Yelp
You know that place that locals swear by and reveal only to their closest friends? This is it. This no-frills gem on Central Ave is BYOB. Lots of options and you can see the effort that's gone into each dish. Chorizo and Tinga Flautas were delicious and had such depth of flavor. Enchiladas and Tacos were brilliant too. Have been there multiple times already but haven't had a chance to try Flan or Tres Leches; probably next time. Highly recommend

Yelp
My go to place for chilequlies. Whenever I find myself craving some good, authentic Mexican food I hop on over to this gem. Nothing fancy, but the food is always great. Chilequlies Verde with Chicken and a fried egg is probably my favorite breakfast in the area. The Chile verde isn't too spicy but has a great amount of heat that hits the spot. The coffee is delicious and the prices are great. One of my favorite spots.

Yelp
Small restaurant but with a lot of life. We came to May 5th and they had live performance. My chicken was a bit cold but not sure if it was cause the door was open and it was cold out. You being your own liquor or beer and the drinks don't have liquor unless you bring your own to add. I love margaritas but not the frozen ones and that all they had. Liked the Music but wasn't crazy about the drinks or food. The tacos looked good though, have a lot of meat
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered delivery from here on a Friday night. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with the salsa verde sauce and chicken enfrijoladas. This was my first time trying these dishes. I ordered these because of the great reviews and ohh boy it was good. The portions were huge and the food tasted really good. The wait time for delivery was not bad. Next time I will go to the restaurant to try their other dishes. Overall, Food: 5/5 Portion: 5/5 Delivery time: 5/5 Price: 5/5

Yelp
Once a staple in my Mexican restaurant repertoire, this place has really lost its luster. The food quality has declined, and with plenty of other new Mexican spots opening up eager for your business, this spot is no longer my hands down go to restaurant. That title belongs to El Águila Dorada en Bayonne (either location).
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a while now and the food has always been consistently priced/ delicious. Lately it's has been the opposite. The prices are through the roof and the quality is below par. I ordered 4 taco's for $13 and I only received 2. The prices on the website are extremely inconsistent from what they currently offer and the quality has decreased tremendously. This used to be a treat but now it's just a headache.

Yelp
Ordered dinner for me and my dock workers! Fast and efficient food was good for the price! Showed up very fast for an order of 10

Swami S.

Yelp
The waitress kept coughing the whole time. I've always enjoyed the food here, no complaints!!. At least wear a face mask while serving food or when talking to customers. Not looking for a complimentary flu and/or Covid along with the food you serve. This is reprehensible professionalism by the restaurant.

Yelp
Cheap, authentic Mexican food? Yes, please. Now, this isn't your trendy, downtown, Taqueria-type Mexican spot. This is casual, authentic joint serving up some delicious and cheap Mexican food. If you know Spanish, the better. Order the guacamole, so fresh and for the price, not a bad portion. I prefer mine with a bit of kick, but this was oh so creamy and good. The complimentary chips and salsa area always welcome, although I wish the bowl of salsa was a bit bigger. The guy ordered up a platter chock full of spicy pork, chorizo, steamed cactus, scallions and of course rice, beans, tortillas. This was all for about $10-$12. He loved every bite. I snagged a bite of the spicy pork and cactus and 'twas delicious; definitely a great option for all you paleo peoples out there. I went with the green chicken enchiladas that came with rice and beans. The green sauce had a nice kick to it and I'm glad I went with it over the red or mole options. The interesting aspect of the enchilada's were that the inner corn tortilla was steamed, but looks like the outer tortilla was baked making it crispy. I actually prefer soft tortillas throughout, but this was an interesting take and definitely added a bit of crunch, but also making it a bit difficult to eat with a knife and fork. When asking for water they bring over the bottle (it's only about $1), but just a heads up. Overall, dinner with a nice 20% tip was about $40 for more than enough food for two people. Definitely explore the Heights and check out this gem!

Yelp
After reading many great reviews I knew I needed to try this place. It was such a nice afternoon and it was so close to my house we walked there. We stopped there for lunch and were very pleased with the service, the food and the price. This place serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and of course dessert. ( didn't get to try dessert but am looking forward to going back for that). My wife had the quesadilla with pollo asado. I went with the four soft taco platter, I made each one different, pollo asado, Carne asado, chorizo and pork. The portions were so good I didn't have room for dessert. All this food plus a soda for my wife was just over $20. Such a deal! Definitely check out this place if you are in the area. I may have to try their delivery service next time we are in the mood for Mexican. Sure beats going to the local chain restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Attentive friendly service. Clean but could use a paint job. Amazing food in a an area inundated with Spanish restaurants. This is our go-to place.
google avatar

Biggy E.

Yelp
1st time I ordered, the delivery boy spilled the shrimp stew sauce all over the other dishes. We didn't get to enjoy the other two dishes as they really are. The shrimp was good but has tons of MSG - eat and snooze the best kind! I called the restaurant and the owner gave me 20 bucks credit. Sunday we ordered and claimed our credit. The food was awesome! Glad we gave them another chance. The goat stew was delicious, flautas was supper yummy, fresh tortillas was awesome! Gauc was fresh and amazing. I called them to thank them for a good dinner!

Yelp
This place was saved by the great entrees. The rest was strange, the chips and salsa weren't great (stale chips, salsa seemed like Pace from a jar) We read on the reviews that it was BYOB so we brought tequila for margaritas and upon arrival were told they couldn't do it because the person who makes them wasn't there that day. It was a Saturday night. We told them it was a huge reason we came so the waitress offered to make us some, she brought over virgin strawberry daiquiris (not margaritas like we asked) and didn't mix our tequila in, so we poured it in ourselves. The entrees however, saved the experience. Really great enchiladas and nice presentation. Would come back managing my expectations for a great meal and skip the drinks.
google avatar

Carrie L.

Yelp
I have been ordering here for 10 years and it's still great. Prices very reasonable and flavor is authentic. I really like the pollo tinga gorditas and the enchiladas. My roommate loved the quesadillas hongos.
google avatar

Daisha N.

Yelp
Alright your getting five stars. Service, food, atmosphere, great smells, adorbs setup. Fresh flowers on my table and they have Pepsi Ahhhh ;) Overall I was very please with chips and salsa when I sat down. No service issues. The waitress wasn't helpful and educational. She was informative and overall great!!! The food is pretty tasty. My friend goes here every week and I have to say fair game. The mole, the sopas, the guac wS delicious. I give them a thumbs up. "Keep the cook" You should defiantly order food or check it out! The prices are perfect. Authentic yes. I want carne asada, I can't wait to check that out...

Yelp
Wow! Hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants in jersey city. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. This place is also BYOB and the ladies can mix your drinks with all types of juices. My favorite item on the menu is the steak quesadilla with flour tortilla. Highly recommend this establishment.
google avatar

Pay D.

Yelp
When in the mood for tacos, yelp sends you here in the Jersey City area! Had a late lunch here, and although the food was good, it wasn't as flavorful and fresh as we'd hoped. The server was also really rude and bothered from the moment she sat us until we payed the bill. The place wasn't busy at all, in fact there were only two tables with us being one of them occupied. I like to give two chances before I write a place off, but I still don't think i'll be coming back anytime soon.
google avatar

Yelp
The Food Is Always Fresh And Not Too Salty, Loved The Steak And Flautas, I Highly Recommend Them For One Very Important Reasons, Price Is Affordable, Everything Mostly Made And Prepare There, And Very Friendly People
google avatar

Chelsey S.

Yelp
Really awesome food at a great price. Dishes were really flavorful and large portions. The staff was friendly and we didn't have to wait very long. Good option for soccer fans since the game was playing!

Yelp
Love it when it is good, then I am sad when it is not... if that makes sense... It is hit or miss. I have been there about a handful of times and the service is ALWAYS spectacular. ALWAYS. Since it is BYOB (My fav), I am loving this place. Apps? Guac has been mashed avocado each time... I keep falling for that. This time my guy got a Mexican hot dog with Jalapeno, onion, tomato, mayo, ketchup and mustard. When it was ordered, the waitress never heard of it... Needless to say, it was Jalapeno, onion and tomato on a nuked hot dog. Pretty dry without the condiments. But when our enchiladas came out - we were beyond happy. With a bill of only 33 bucks - it is hard to be too angry at the half assed meal. It did it's job. I always forgive this place because of the service, atmosphere and BYOB.

Yelp
Inexpensive huge portions of authentic Mexican food are served at this homely restaurant in The Heights. The menu is extensive ranging from tacos to platters, enchiladas to salads and tortas to American classics such as pancakes and hamburgers. The restaurant is unlicensed but they have an amazing range of freshly squeezed inexpensive juices and both imported and domestic sodas. You do have to wait a little for your food to come out as everything is cooked to order but you get complimentary chips and salsa to nibble on while you are waiting. The waitresses are sweet and efficient. I particularly like the Gorditas they serve here but everything is fresh and tasty. Los Tres Chilitos is a good place to come for brunch at the weekends if you fancy something a bit more interesting than the usual eggs bennie and French toast but it's also great for lunch and a casual dinner. It's also a good spot for a get-together or celebration if you come with a group of friends and order a bunch of stuff and there are plenty of vegetarian options to be found on the menu as well.
google avatar

Nicole V.

Yelp
Dont get me wrong this food is usually amazing but this time i ordered and was pretty much disgusted when i saw a piece of shrimp tail in my food!! I dont remember order shrimp scraps ugh
google avatar

Hinal P.

Yelp
I've been here twice and the food is fresh and the portions are large for the price. Some of the flavor was lacking in the pork Gordita but I just added some of the sauce that came with the tacos. The wait was a bit long for the food but it came out hot. It's a nice casual place to eat and I would probably come back again.

Pat W.

Yelp
Nice little restaurant that serves outstanding Mexican food. Service is great and very attentive.

Paul A.

Yelp
I ordered my plate. I asked for more beans. I had to wait.other guests checlef on. amount of beans given was too little. the order is $6 not worth it. manager said it's logical. unpleasant

Yelp
I am from Kansas City and I'm staying in Jersey city for a couple of days and saw this hole in the wall. I ordered the Gordita platter of tinga de pollo and it was delicious! You will get full. However, the service was okay. The servers do not communicate with you often and you have to ask for every thing.
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Came back here to add to my review because I have been consistently ordering from them for the past 6 years and have explored the menu more. I am always so surprised at how affordable and delicious the food is! They are so quick with delivery too. My favorite on the menu is now the pozole Oaxaqueño, the best for when you are hungover or feeling ill or just craving a nice hearty stew. It also comes with a side of 2 tostadas with cheese, sour cream and lettuce.

Eileen L.

Yelp
Their food is just so authentic and they always serve you well. I'm never hungry after I finish eating my order! Su comida es tan autenticó y siempre te sirven bien. Nunca termino mi plato sintiendo hambre aun!

Yelp
Wow wOw wow wow is this good Mexican... everything was perfect. Taqueria downtown who?

Yelp
Super low key hole in the wall type of place in the heights on central ave! Love the spacious environment! Menu is in English/Spanish! If you want home cooked real deal tacos, this is the place to go! came here last week with the miss and she absolutely loved it! Spicy pork tacos are bomb! Hella cheap for the amount of food you get IMO!
google avatar

Janice L.

Yelp
I have ordered delivery from here many times. I usually get the enchiladas verdes and a side of guacamole. The food is always super fresh and extremely tasty. The delivery time is pretty standard for the area but they have great service. One day I'll make it up there to eat at the restaurant!
google avatar

Bloss C.

Yelp
I found my new Mexican place in the heights :) I have ordered delivery and dined-in, each time my food was inexpensive, fresh, and tasty. Service when you dine-in is warm and friendly. This is definitely more of a casual neighborhood restaurant, for example the TV is usually on and showing the latest soccer game. Food-wise I have tried the tostados, shrimp tacos, rice and beans, and guac with chips. The guac is good but the chips are only ok. I liked the shrimp tacos, but recommending ordering a side of rice and beans to go with it. Their menu is pretty extensive and there are several things on my 'to try list' like the Chile Relleno combination plate. Also it's worth mentioning that the combination plates are definitely a great choice because they come with rice and beans and a nice assortment of sides like grilled scallions and Mexican sausage.

Yelp
Super fire Im from Cali so you know we take pride in our Mexican cuisine. This place was just like home super friendly and the taste was like I was eating in my family's kitchen we'll definitely revisit before heading back home.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food on Central Ave! We had this restaurant deliver to our house and the food is always fantastic. I'm a huge fan of the TORTAS (sandwiches) especially the Milanesa (breaded chicken or steak options). If you don't like spicy food make sure you tell them no jalapeños! I finally decided to go into the restaurant and it's exactly like I pictured it. A few tables, nothing fancy, friendly servers. Finding parking around that area is a bit tough so if you aren't too far, just walk. I went earlier the other day and realized they offer breakfast. So I went for it, I tried their breakfast torta with eggs, ham, refried beans, Mexican quesillo, avocado, onions, and tomatoes. It was amazing!! The prices are so reasonable, you can't go wrong.

Yelp
My friends and I walked into what looked like someone's family gathering. Nothing but laughter, music, and jovial Spanish conversation. As semi-gringos we still felt welcome and enjoyed the ambiance. There was ample space and seating. They start you off with some complimentary chips and salsa. Muy bien. :) For you vegans: I recommend getting guacamole, pico de gallo, and veggie fajitas (without tortilla, queso, and sour cream) *make sure to ask for no cheese with the beans Everything was beyond delicious. Portion and price was on point. It was my first dining experience in the area so I have nothing to compare it to but not a bad start! They also make some yummy fresh squeezed juices. Carrot, beet, and orange. They accept credit cards.

Yelp
Been wanting to come to this place for a while now, just never got around to it due to the parking situation on Central Ave. Today, being Cinco de Mayo, I finally went here for dinner. Food here is on point, they also have a wide selection of Mexican drinks and my favorite the Horchata. After not being able to decide, everything looked good on the menu I finally went with the steak tacos. They have been served with the green and red sauce, the green sauce was excellent, however the red one was packing too much heat for me so I didn't use it. I would have given the place 5 stars, however the service was just terrible here. It took about 10 minutes for them to come and bring us chips and salsa, then another 15 minutes to come and take the order. Only after I started turning and looking for someone to come over. The place didn't seem busy at all also. When finally the order has been taken and they brought the food, they screwed up and brought the wrong appetizer and instead of steak they served pork instead. The food was very good and I was too hungry to send it back and wait for the replacement. Same goes for the appetizer. I will give them another chance, also I will definitely be stopping by and picking up food or having it delivered. As far as their table service it needs major improvement.

Yelp
My partner and I always grab dinner at tres chilitos. It's one of the only places closes late in The Heights. Good service, good food.
