Refugee-owned Mission Restaurant to Close After Four Decades - Eater SF

"Peter Lawrence Kane at SF Weekly wrote a love letter to the micheladas at the “underrated” Los Yaquis in the Mission. He notes the space is queer-friendly without pandering, and that “the food is unlike anything else in the Mission, full stop.”" - Erin Russell

The food at Los Yaquis in Van ness is really good and so is the service. The menu here is a bit different from the Folsom location. This one leans more toward seafood but they have everything from chicken to beef to seafood. The tostadas are a must, the tacos dorados are great, the octopus sarandeado is also really good. Portions are big and decent so the quality to price ratio is honestly superb. The vibe is very good. It’s LGBT-inclusive and you can feel that everyone is welcome. The service is excellent and the staff is always attentive. It’s also a family-friendly place. You see a lot of families coming here to eat and enjoy the food. The karaoke on Fridays and Saturdays adds a fun touch and makes it a great place to spend the evening. Overall this is a solid spot with great food, great atmosphere and something for everyone.

Hands down the best breakfast I had while I was in San Francisco. I walked passed this restaurant during dinner/lunch and didn't realize it was busier then (packed!). This restaurant is pride themed, as a heads up. On another note, the service was excellent as the waiter offered a non-alcoholic drink made from horchata and, I could be wrong, strawberries. It was light in (rice) flavor and balanced out well with breakfast. Although, I can not remember for the life of me what the dish was called, I will always remember the flavors of a home brought to this country from a life I've never lived.

Great atmosphere and best Mexican food in town. The music could be a bit loud but everything is in this place, specially their Aguachiles. Customer since 2020.

Google
Los Yaquis stands out as one of the premier Mexican cuisine experiences in San Francisco. A regular customer for the past 16 years since its opening, I've observed its evolution firsthand. The menu has transformed over time, each change only amplifying its appeal. From tantalizing seafood dishes to classic Mexican staples, everything is top-notch. The restaurant's aesthetic, too, has grown with time, now an Instagram-worthy ambiance from every corner. It's not just about the food and decor, though. Make your evenings unforgettable by joining their karaoke nights every Friday and Saturday - easily the most entertaining spectacle in town. The cherry on top? The cordiality of the staff and owners, always serving with a smile. I find myself constantly recommending Los Yaquis. If you're in the city, it's an absolute must-visit!

Google
Top favorite restaurant. 👌🏼 Pollo en Crema Chipotle and ceviche never disappoints. 😋

Google
Los Yaquis Taqueria...that's where he said to meet...it's right there on S. Van Ness blvd. you can't miss it! Well, I was in the city anyway going over the spec sheet for the Hemmerslogger machine that I helped old Pickpocket Pearl and her Slug husband Needlefish McGee put up on the roof of their brownstone so they could better their odds of bringing in that Horned Paddler that's been hanging around Goodebump Charlie's. It'll work okay, but everyone at Goosebump's will probably have a headache. He's recommend the Tacos de Barbacoa a la Plancha...said they're the best in the city, and he was right...they were Amazing! 5 stars for Los Yaquis ☆☆☆☆☆

Yelp
I have been their customer for almost a decade! Always so fresh, delicious, and consistent! I absolutely love their food and also their service and respect that they are constantly wanting to stay updated and improve. They have the typical popular staples like burritos and tacos but they also have some specialty items like the one on the picture.

Yelp
Love this place for the food, service, ambience and community! Owned by Aguirre's! I think we must be family. Queer/Trans women presente n we love that. They have some of the funnest karaoke & the drinks here are 100% worth the price. You ever had a margarita or a michelada in a glass bigger than you? I'm serious. They're life sized! With 2 locations; one in the Mission & one at Precita Park, there's no excuse for missing out on this top notch Mexican restaurant. Go get you some.

Yelp
This place is such a vibe! Fun, really really good food, and guaranteed to make you want to come back. Here is my pro-tip when it comes to this local spot just say YESSSSS to everything! Trying their spin on traditional favorites will not disappoint you and I highly recommend trying something that you have never heard of because again you will be pleased with your choice. We had a lovely server who to the time to explain the dishes and give us some great recommendations!

Yelp
Came on a weekday evening after work. It's a vibrant casual spot for some hearty Mexican food. I ordered the chicken with chipotle cream, which was decadent. The dish had really great sauce, and the rice and bread on the side were especially delicious with the sauce smothered all over it. Pretty large portion as I had food leftover and got a to-go box for it. My friend got the bacon wrapped shrimp, which looked very tasty as well. Chips and salsa were fine. We also each ordered a margarita - very strong and tasty! Service was pretty quick, but I wish they had refilled our water toward the end of our meal. I had to resort to drinking from my own water bottle. Tasty and good Mexican spot in town!

Yelp
Overall I like this place. Micheladas are great but my only complaint was our food order. I ordered 2 ribeye steaks and they weren't ribeye steaks. I asked the waitress if this was a Ribeye and she confirmed with the cook that it was. These steaks were super thin more like skirt steaks! We paid $30 a steak and expected a ribeye. Just be aware.

Yelp
Worst Customer Service The guy with the lashes was so rudeee! Never comin back! The food was good we got a horchata fresa it was bomb it was just the guy with lashes being rude or trying to be funny about chargin us extra for a straw and had funny comebacks
google avatar

Linh L.

Yelp
Hands down the best Michelada place in town. I haven't been back since Covid but nothing has changed. I've tried a handful of spots all around the Bay Area and Los Yaquis still places at #1 for me. Their Michelada with shrimp is mouth watery goodness. Their Toastada ceviche is also one of my favorites. They add mayo so it adds in extra flavor. Service is always great and servers are always attentive. A very chill place to come with friends for some delicious drinks and food. Parking is a little of a pain so it's good to carpool if you plan on coming with a group.

Yelp
We came here by chance and I'm glad we stumbled upon it! The aguachile was a standout. The molcajete is a great deal to share between two people and the tortillas it came with were delicious! The beans are very liquidy, bordering on thick soup, but I really enjoyed them. We let the server know we were in a rush and they made sure we got our food and check quickly.

Yelp
So much fun! We came in on a Friday night to celebrate a friend's birthday, and there was a DJ playing music and karaoke. The food and drinks were delicious and service was amazing! They even gave us a round of shots on the house! Will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Alejandro T.

Yelp
Service was attentive and friendly. Some of the best mariscos in the bay. The camarones con crema are bomb. My favorite was their pescado dish. Micheladas con modelo negras we're on point. Authentic tasting and great vibes.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Great service! & food is delicious!! I tried the beef and chicken enchiladas. Amazing fast service, recommend!

Yelp
Read the reviews on Yelp. Went there for lunch. Service was great. Wife ordered the molecojete. I order the chorizo breakfast burrito. Both were delicious Nicely decorated. It was festive inside since it was pride weekend.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to have lunch at and came across this restaurant. We were seated right away & the food came out quickly. I got a tostada de ceviche and an horchata, both were delicious. The waiter was very helpful and answered all of our questions. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Decided to come come here on a fluke! Was about to go to Chevy's . Food was delicious! Service was great, very informative & welcoming. Ambiance, VIBESSSS! Karaoke on Friday's & Saturday 8pm-2am 8.5 (not enough seasoning for my liking). Sopes 9.5 (bottom was a little too crispy). 8 (Plantains were overcooked). Service 10/10 Ambiance

Sophia A.

Yelp
Luis and Abel were able to greet us in a very welcoming humble manner. The food was so delicious. Everything was really good. Those oysters are no joke. Best oysters ever!

Yelp
I'm not one to usually leave negative reviews but I really felt I had to leave one in this case. I was pretty excited to give this place a try after seeing so many positive reviews. After arriving with my partner, we ordered two horchatas and began ordering our food. Our server was straight up disrespectful to me. I ordered a simple super burrito and my partner wasn't even given a chance to order his aguachile plate when the server began judging my order. He asked me if it was my first time, which I politely replied yes! He then proceeded to tell me that I should go to a taqueria or another spot or something (in a very demeaning way) if I wanted to order that. He then said it's typically something american people order and something people not really familiar with Mexican food order. I explained to him that I am not Mexican and he said "but you are Latina right" which he replied "same Thing" in a very judge mental way. Then began naming dishes as if I hadn't already looked through the menu to make my choice. I will never be returning here. Unless you want to be judged for your food choices and made to feel extremely uncomfortable don't come here. After this happened we paid for two horchatas which came out to about 17 dollars and politely left. Would leave no stars if I could.

Yelp
BOMB aguachile! The trio is a nice way to sample 3 different types, but the portions are a little small. I also got a full sized verde on the side. These aguachile are perfectly spicy, definitely bring the heat! Also good margaritas here. Overall really love this place!
google avatar

Yelp
We decided to come here for a last minute dinner hoping they would have tacos and margaritas. They did not have tacos but did have margaritas. My friend and I shared a strawberry MEGA margarita which was yummy! For food we got the chicken in creamy chipotle sauce, however here was nothing "chipotle" about it..... lol, it had no spice at all and the vegetables that came with it were bitter. The carne asada was a bit better but it did not come with tortillas so best believe I'm judging. It was a Friday karaoke night so it was pretty loud. There was a creepy guy that was just chillin there and kept staring our way which was uncomfortable, but that's not the restaurants fault. The service was good. Not super duper top notch, but that's fine! Overall it was alright.
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
Food very delicious, service amazing and ambiance great. I love los Yaquis. My favorite place to eat and the best margaritas. I personally recommend Los Yaquis.

Kiara D.

Yelp
The food service and ambiance was amazing! Our server was very nice and quick will definitely come back.

Andy E.

Yelp
I would like if the restaurant is going to offer a promotion, please honor your word. Upsetting to drive all the way here just to be told coupon works for only specific items
google avatar

Juliana M.

Yelp
Friday & Saturday night is the time to go! The karaoke night is always a blast and the food and drinks are great.
google avatar

Ruth A.

Yelp
He visitado este lugar muchas veces pero hoy quise venir por el karaoke y resulta que no se si por que estaban ocupados la mega michelada que ordene estaba de lo peor!!

Maria E.

Yelp
Nice place with great food with eye pleasing presentation. We've been there several times and service is always great and very friendly. They have Kate on Saturdays and are especially attentive when celebrating a special occasion, which was the case when we were there for my sister's birthday. The only draw back is parking, but they don't have any control over it. The jumbo Margarita or Michelada is amazing in size and flavor!
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
10/10. Aguachiles is very very spicy but so good. Caldo is big and great! Pollo diabla was ok. They had the best tostadas ever lol. Fresh tortillas also great. Micheladas are awesome and you can get huge ones to share with friends. More fancy sitdown mexican, but definitely worth it. ~40-50 per person after tax and tip.

Jose G.

Yelp
The waiter with the eyelashes and make up was extremely rude, he told my gf that if she wanted a burrito she could go to a taqueria, and told her that she should order another dish that was more "authentic" then proceeded to name the whole menu when he had already told him what we wanted. He was also racist because he assumed my gf was Mexican, but she is latina, and told her "well isn't that the same thing". We just paid for our drinks then left! Horrible service.
google avatar

Emelly S.

Yelp
Food was so good. We went on a Friday so they had karaoke. We had so much fun. For sure coming back.

Yelp
I'm born & raised in the Mission district and I'm always scrolling through / searching for new places to try in the neighborhood, so glad I stumbled across Los Yaquis!! When going to a Mexican restaurant I'm usually looking for a Pescado frito (Whole fried fish) and Caldo!! Sure enough they've got both, I ordered the Caldo de Siete Mares (7 seas soup) which was fresh / flavorful and the fish was fried to perfection!! If you come here and love beer, I highly recommend to order the Mega Michelada!! Not only does it make you you feel like a BOSS, it's damn delicious and the shrimps are deliciously juicy!!
google avatar

Lorena M.

Yelp
Very good food and service here! Definitely worth it. The ambiance is wonderful and amazing.

Garrett D.

Yelp
Just simply amazing from the service to the food....a place to be on any kind of day....
google avatar

Jeanette Jane G.

Yelp
This place is great for authentic Mexican food and drinks. I usually go for their ceviche tostada and my friends and I will share some sopes, nachos and coctel de camaron. It's appears to be off the beaten path, yet worth a visit!
google avatar

Regina K.

Yelp
Amazing food and service -- the dish I order was carne asada -- it came on a cast iron dish with other delights such as a little quesadilla and a pepper with cheese -- the homemade tortillas and the Service :) excellent --:)
google avatar

Daisy G.

Yelp
Los yakis michelada was huge and perfect to share. E we paired it with the nachos de asada which was a perfect portion
google avatar

Giselle O.

Yelp
Customer service, amazing. Food, delicious. (Huevos Rancheros) 3.50 for a piece of cheese? Questionable.
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
Such a good spot for drinks and appetizers, their micheladas are bomb and I love the whole presentation. Appetizers were amazing as well, I can't say much about the entrees since I only went for drinks and appetizers, but I definitely will be back to try their bigger plates and to have another one of their famous super michelada haha. The waiter was super nice and friendly as well.
google avatar

Luisa M.

Yelp
Food was great, I had the salmon with mushrooms and spinach; it was tasty and just righty service was great, I went with a work group to celebrate my birthday and I have to say they were very attentive kept coming by to check how we were doing and if we needed anything else. The ambience was fun, karaoke on Fridays and Saturdays we went in Thursday but will make plans to come down on a Friday to check it out. From the outside this place doesn't look like it will be nice but once you step inside it was a beautiful place; flowers hanging from the ceiling and mirrors around. Will definitely come back because of the food and ambiance.
google avatar

Layne B.

Yelp
This spot has some of the best micheladas I've ever had! Get it with the shrimp, they were seasoned so well!
google avatar

Raquel S.

Yelp
Walking around SF on a sunny afternoon and my girl and I wanted a michelada, we yelped what's around it was a 30 min walk from 24th. Entrance on S. Vaness small signage. Restaurant was not busy at all it was around maybe 3 pm. Ordered the churrasco and the camarones that had 4 types of them. Micheladas I have to see where pretty good. Prices are good. Our server was so nice, very attentive, explained menu and sizes. I regret not getting his name. We would definitely be back.

Vannya V.

Yelp
Amazing food, is micheladas are to die for and their aguachile is spicy but so satisfying. Favorite morning dish is their chilaquiles
google avatar

Carla F.

Yelp
This place is an absolute hidden gem. I ordered the taquitos dorados with all the fixings from cueritos, fresh tomato's, sour cream, cheese and a whole bunch of goodness! Soooo yummy! Must order. Can I say, whenever you are craving an absolute wonderful Michelada you have to try them here! You can even order a supersize and don't take this lightly but when I say Supersize I mean Supersize you can share it with two people, well if you want to! #dontshare They have karaoke on Saturdays, which is a lot of fun. After a few beers you're probably be up there singing yourself! Not that I've ever done that...nope not I!
google avatar

Yelp
My friend was craving micheladas. I was looking for some place to have dindin. Whipped out my Samsung Note 8 with the Stylus. Unlocked it with my retina scan, not that face stuff that anyone can unlock even when you're sleeping. Ran the handy dandy Yelp app and saw this spot served giant micheladas and the rest was history. We came, we got seated and after much deliberation we didn't split the giant michelada. We went with individuals instead. I went with the Pacific. Then for our starter, we had the cevice on a tostada which was sublime btw. For our main event, I the hubster and I shared the paella which was baseball bat to the back of the head delicious yo! It was just insane how good it was, plus the sizzling presentation was winning. My friends caldo de res was yummy too. The atmosphere was contagious. We got there in time for Karaoke and Mexican folk music is super fun to sway to. Plus the service was definitely on point. I shall return my friend. I shall!! Thank you so much for reading my review. I hope this helps with your decision making experience. Enjoy your awesome yelptastic day!

Yelp
This place went downhill really fast. Prices are outrageous and the food quality sub par. They have a horrible like a terrace if you can call it, to sit outside. It looks terrible, with all that graffiti.

Sandy D.

Yelp
Very delicious!! Very good and nice service!! At a very nice location good neighborhood

Hec R.

Yelp
Los Yaquis is a Mexican Yutacalan-style restaurant that offers good quality food. I had Enchiladas Jaliscienses, red enchiladas stuffed with cheese, onions, chicken breast on the side, and salad. The chicken is full of flavor and cooked to perfection. The salsa was good but could be spicer. The plate is too small for food. But overall, The service was excellent, the waiter was attentive, and I enjoyed the fresh flowers on the table. I cannot wait to taste another item on their menu.
google avatar

Angeles M.

Yelp
You can not upload the video, so I leave some not so remarkable photos, today we went to eat and my cousin's plate was full of mosquitoes, we told the waiter and said he could not do anything ... we asked him to take us away the salad to scare away insects, and if we change the Dish but their shrimp on the devil were full of flies and the rice looked like it was from a previous day lousy service!
