Lost Dog is a must-go place if you're anywhere in Northern Virginia. And even sometimes worth a trek from DC (or on your way back to the city from Shenandoah, for example). I'd best describe it as a laid back, friendly, local pizza joint with a Cheers-like, easy-going atmosphere, an unbelievably long, good, and rotating beer selection, and quite good pizzas. I've been going there since high school (and I don't want to name that year ;-)) for family nights, dates, and now bringing my own family. The staff are awesome, too, and often very funny.
I recommend the pizzas above all else. The Sicilian pizza is my favorite on the menu - pepperoni, oregano, onions, ham, and just overall mmmmmness. The Kujo pie, Spinach Feta pie, and Greek are also quite good. The ingredients are generally fresh. They used to have a Crab pizza, which several friends and relatives raved about, but I haven't seen it for some time. But try asking for it -- we have a couple of times, and they made it for us.
The beers. Oh, where do I start? The Belgian St Bernardus Quad on tap is fantastic (and it's really like drinking two beers bc of the alcohol content at 10%). But you can really go nuts on beers - the selection is off the hook, and the draft selection is always rotating.
Where Lost Dog could do better is 1) lowering the beer prices a bit (it's too much compared with the competition); 2) improving the quality of the wine selection (they have wines but they're not nearly as good as other leading pizza places).
Oh - and in terms of sizing - an individual pizza is normally enough for 1 person, a Large can easily feed 3 people, but a Small doesn't really feed 2. Weird but true. Anyhow, I recommend it overall. It ain't fancy, but it's fun.
