I moved away from the area years ago, but Lost Dog Cafe remains my favorite restaurant to ever grace the entirety of Charleston County. From its humble beginnings in the old "Sanitary Restaurant" space on Center Street to its wildly successful location in the old laundry mat, I followed the Lost Dog for years.
For my birthday last weekend, my husband surprised me with the two hour drive just to have brunch at Lost Dog.
As always and especially on the weekends, there was a line and a wait. Though the joke in my family is that "Oh, she won't wait for food," I DO, I WILL, and I will ALWAYS wait to get a table here. The food is always worth waiting for. Others proved my point this weekend, as we all waited for our tables, even in the pouring rain!
Not only was I super stoked to be there AND get a seat on the patio, I was thrilled to discover that they were serving their special: Corned Beef Hash.
Let me tell you a secret: I do not like corned beef hash. But once upon a time, I took a bite of a friend's here and it was so incredibly delicious! Crispy but tender home fries topped with sweet, sweet caramelized onions, perfectly sautéed mushrooms, and *exactly* the right amount of thinly sliced corned beef mixed in and eggs cooked to your choosing laid on top. It's so delicious. Lost Dog is the only place I'll eat this dish and happy birthday to me, as it was on the menu that day!
Paired with a latte and a cold glass of water and I was in heaven.
My husband had a Bloody Mary that he really enjoyed and the Eggs Benedict. SO good. The addition of a fried green tomato adds something that, for me, helps cut the fatty flavors of bennies. The hollandaise on this day was acting like it was about to break, but it was still flavorful.
Cheese grits were still the same, delicious, creamy bites of heaven and the bacon was perfectly cooked.
Service, despite the place being a mad house, remains "Folly Excellent." And by that I mean no one is rushing you. You get to relax, eat, and enjoy the meal you waited so patiently for. Our waitress checked on us just enough! Not too much, never too little.
This is a place that should be treasured and has been around a long, long time...and I hope it stays that way. Always.
