20 Places to Visit Along West Virginia's Country Roads

"Hundreds of feet underneath Lewisburg, West Virginia, over a mile of interconnected passages, filled with stalactites and stalagmites, wind through a limestone cave. This otherworldly underground site is known as Lost World Caverns. For many years, the only entrance to the cave was a deep hole, which local farmers once used as a dumping ground for dead livestock and other waste. It turned out that the hole was a deep vertical shaft—around 120 feet long—that led into a massive chamber within the expansive cave system. The vaulted chamber measures approximately 1,000 feet long, 300 feet wide, and 120 feet high. Much of southern West Virginia sits on a karst plateau. As water moves through this limestone table, it carves intricate passageways marked by dripping rock formations. In the 1960s, a survey of the cave charted over a mile of interconnected passageways. They documented life in the cave system as well—in 1967, the remains of a prehistoric cave bear were unearthed. In the early 1970s, a portion of the cave was opened to visitors. A walking entrance was dug out, walkways were installed, and years’ worth of trash was removed. The temperature inside the cavern is a constant 52 degrees Fahrenheit and the cave contains stalagmites up to 80 feet tall. One of the more well-known stalactite formations, the Snowy Chandelier, weighs around 30 tons.  Lost World Caverns is also home to a disappearing stream. You can hear the stream throughout the cave system, but you cannot see where it goes. The stream emerges some eight miles from the caverns. Living in this odd ecosystem are cave crickets and salamanders. The cave crickets are easy to spot throughout you’re tour but the salamanders not so much. To see some salamander activity you’ll want to be one of the first visitors in the morning." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

My husband went into the Cavern. I am not able to walk the stairs, so he went in on his own. He was in there for about 45 minutes. He said it was absolutely gorgeous! He also got some beautiful pictures. I sat on the front porch and relaxed. They also have Llama’s and horse’s on their property. I noticed some picnic tables, so it would be nice to take a picnic lunch before going into the cavern. The gift shop has some nice stuff for gifts. Great day.

My husband and I were just out joy riding and saw this place in the map and decided to go to it. This place is so amazing and surreal. We loved every minute of being there. I have never been to one and always wanted to go. It is an absolutely a must to see. So amazing there. The people who work there are great too.

South a great time. Self guided tour so take as much or as little time as you like. It is a wee bit chilly, 52°f inside and some water on the ground but it was not bad. Such cool formations. Definitely recommend for a nice day out

Excellent visit for a short trip. This cave will take about 45 minutes or less to go through. Excellent place to stretch the legs if traveling. There was no wait time and you dont need to buy tickets in advance unless you do their longer guided tours. There are stairs that may be wet from time to time. So, it isn't a place for someone in a wheelchair. The gift shop is also nice. Go check this place out if you are passing through.

Photos won't do justice but I'll post some anyway. It was a great place to visit, the cave was beautiful, and the owner was very welcoming and great to talk to. It's a self guided tour so you can take your time and just enjoy what took nature a million years to make!

I didn't want to add too many photos because YOU HAVE TO GO!!! It's one of the best caves I've been to in a while (I'm not like, a cave connoisseur, but I liked this one enough to give it a review!). The tunnel down was really unique, and the formations were astounding! We only did the 45 minute tour, but the 4 hour guided tour sounded so cool! The natural history museum was a fun little addition. Everything from the tickets to the gift shop items were super reasonably priced, but I would have gladly paid more to keep that place up and running. I'm not in West Virginia often, but I can't wait to go back and see more of Lost World Caverns!

It was fun to go inside the cave and see all the stalagtites, stalagmites, columns, and curtains. My family and I got to take amazing pictures. The issue I had with it was the fact that it is a self guided tour which was not expected until after you pay. Even with the signs, it is difficult to know what direction you are supposed to go in. I suggest reading all signage cause that is the only way you will know if you are going in the right direction and the only way you will have any information about the cave. There is one side of the cave that smells really nasty, but again, read the sign you will then know why. But, it would be nice if there was a tour guide to tell you the reason for things before having to read a sign.

Coolest experience ever. Me and my girlfriend decided to go with the guided cave tour. We were the only people who showed up that day and essentially got a private cave tour. Our guide was fun, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to be around. Well worth the price!
