The 38 Essential Restaurants in Detroit

"Spiced gumbo loaded with seafood is the main event at this decades-old carryout restaurant and micro-chain that originated near Eastern Market. At this Detroit institution, the gumbo is packed with shrimp, sausage, cut okra, and a proprietary blend of seasonings, and shares space on the menu with other Bayou favorites like red beans and rice, jambalaya, and shrimp po’ boys made with a crackly baguette. The original Eastern Market area spot shuttered in late 2023 as ownership made way for a new spruced up and larger location not too far away, at 2830 Gratiot Avenue." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Never tried the food... Low rating because they NEVER answer the phone... Ever. Don't want to travel all the way here and they're not open. Terrible experience to want to be a to try a new spot and can't because they're to sorry to answer the phones. No matter what time you call.

I get the same thing every time, veggie beans with brown rice, the issue isn’t the food it’s the worker. She’s slim, dark brown and the receipt says her name is Troy S. She is the most rude person I have ever encountered. If I don’t like the presentation of my food and want it replaced she acts as if I’m asking for something unreasonable. I should be able to get what I expect especially when I’m spending my money. She should work at an oil change place so no one ever sees her or has to hear her mouth.

First time here, they were open during construction, service was OK. I had to greet the cashier first… ordered two seafood gumbo‘s and a shrimp gumbo. I was told they ran out of oysters for the seafood gumbo and that they gave me extra crab meat… I told him I want a chicken instead for oysters and was told they already made it. when I tasted the gumbo, it reminded me of soup. not happy with my food, but I hope the best for this restaurant.

We waited more than 30 minutes to get our order, and the place was empty. I literally left to go use the restroom somewhere else because theirs were out of order. After coming back for about 20 minutes, our order still wasn't ready, and they said it'll be 5 to 10 minutes to drop the fish. By this time, we had already been waiting, and we placed the order 10 minutes before I left. I can't rate the food because it took too long, and we canceled it.

Google
Ordered catfish with red beans and rice, collards and muffins. The catfish was good but they didn't give me any beans with the rice. 😔 No beans at all... I called numerous times but no one ever picks up and the voicemail is full. Would not recommend.

Yelp
Love the red beans & rice with sausage. I had a Birthday coupon to use. The staff was clueless how-to process it. Three people involved plus someone on the phone.

Yelp
I ordered the Gumbo Supreme via DoorDash. Cornbread muffins were burned and shrimp tasted like they were just plain cocktail shrimp tossed in. The chicken overcooked and the dish was just overall mediocre and not worth the $18 spent. I was truly expecting the old school quality from the original store on Gratiot but was sadly let down. Will not be ordering again.

Yelp
Service was good the lady was nice and welcoming. This food is god awful. First off the Mac n cheese is soggy, no seasoning, the cheese tastes off. The red beans and sausage tasted better in its sample size. It's just 50 pounds of sausage thrown in a bowl with a spoon full of rice. The catfish had NO seasoning at all. Me putting hot sauce on it made it even eatable. It was quite literally bread crumbs fried onto catfish. Oh yeah and also the Mac n cheese is still garbage. Nothing can convince me to eat this. I would rather starve to death than ever lay my eyes on this concoction

Yelp
I am so disappointed!! This restaurant has inconsistent hours and seems to be rarely open, so when my husband saw they were available on door dash I was so excited to order my usual. The fried catfish is typically delicious. Today it was soggy and seemed undercooked. The mac n cheese sat in a pool of oil and seemed to be missing something. The only thing that was good were the greens. I tried to call the restaurant but as usual they rarely answer the phone during WHATEVER HOURS they are open. UGH. DO BETTER OR JUST CLOSE FOR GOOD! This area has very few southern/Cajun style restaurants. I had high hopes for this location. But between the inconsistent availability & today's food quality. The pool has gotten even smaller

Yelp
Ooor service, they never answer the phones and they close when they feel like it il neverbattmpt to eat here again

Yelp
My husband was missing his LCG fix as one of the rotating food trucks at GMs Tech Center. My first time trying it, I was impressed (b/c Cajun/Creole is not at the top of my list) The jambalaya was delicious- with the perfect amount of curry & heat, the red beans and rice were awesome as well, the Mac & cheese was tasty and the greens were the best I've ever had!! The catfish was disappointing- it had a funky taste- I'm pretty sure they needed to change out the fry oil. I love cornbread- but the cornbread muffins has zero flavor, super bland so that was kind of a bummer too. No hot sauce, tartar or butter included, but the everything listed in my first paragraph was SO good, I still give it 4 out of 5 stars!

Yelp
I saw you all on Fox2 News this morning and decided to try you and by my surprise the food was hot and awesome. I ordered thru doordash and I was so glad that the baked chicken diiner with greens and sweet potatoes was so good and real down south cornbread. Then I also the small prem gumbo was so awesome. We had been looking for an authentic Louisiana food and this restaurant fits the bill. I rate it a 10, so very good and we forgot the dessert.

Vicki P.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Paid almost $30 for a large seafood creole. The whole dish with the rice could almost fit in quart container. Ordered the two piece catfish dinner $20 and had not the whole fish but maybe a filet and a half and about a spoonful of Mac and cheese and spoonful of greens. Only thing we had plenty of was six cornbread muffins. Don't mind paying for decent meal but this definitely wasn't worth it. Maybe since I had it delivered they figured it didn't matter. I tried to call and it went straight to voicemail which was full. Guess other people are calling to complain and they don't want to hear it.

Yelp
I came in her for one dish only per the recommendation of a friend. That dish was the red beans and rice with cajun sausages. And I have to admit it was pretty tasty. I got a large order because I didn't notice that there was a smaller serving size. I wished that I had gotten the smaller size after realizing it was an option but after tasting it, I didn't mind having the larger portion to eat more later. I was told that their other dishes were tasty as well so I definitely plan on trying more things. The red beans and rice will definitely be a staple though.

Yelp
Red beans and rice with shrimp and sausage. Absolutely addictive. hope they never change.

Yelp
Welp. First things first. I ordered 2 red beans and Cajun sausages and only received one. The other was only red beans and rice. I did not enjoy the plain red beans. I ordered Mac n cheese and it tasted like it came straight from the box. The shrimp po boy was decent. The fish po boy was a large size but it didn't come fully together. No pickles or ketchup. They only had hot sauce so it was kinda incomplete. My favorite food from here is the red beans with Cajun sausages. So 35 dollars and I'm not impressed. The cornbread was as hard as a brick.

Yelp
You can easily pass this place by. Tucked into an older strip mall. A friend told me about it. Lunch at 1 pm ish . Only 2 people in there. Waitress was quite accommodating. Went with a lunch special of catfish, side of red beans and rice. Served with homemade cornbread. My brother went with Louisiana wings. Both of us enjoyed all the food. Extensive menu. A few people were in for carry outs.no alcohol.

Yelp
Decided to check out newly opened Louisiana Creole Gumbo and it was pretty good! Ordered the Red Beans & Rice with Chicken (which could have been a little more flavorful/spicy), Macaroni & Cheese, Cornbread and Peach Cobbler. Overall everything was pretty good and I'm excited to try a few other dishes from them.

Yelp
I personally haven't been to this location, but my mom was ever so gracious enough to get us some seafood gumbo, while she was picking up dinner for my papa. I've been to their location on Gratiot back in the day when I still ate meat, but I haven't been in years for obvious reasons. My papa got the og gumbo with smoked sausage and shredded chicken, which looked amazing and smelled even better, while I on the other hand was a bit reluctant to try my seafood style gumbo. Now, I really like seafood, I just have a really tough time eating it, when I don't think it belongs in certain dishes like pizza or tacos (shrimp tacos are the ONLY exception) and that goes for gumbo as well. I always liked classic gumbo with sausage and chicken, and now that I'm veggie, I've tried straight up veggie/vegan gumbos, gumbos with veggie meat, but this was a first for me but I'm glad it happened. It's made with a seafood stock and was kinda on the thicker side, that reminded me of chowder, but tasted so heavenly. There was shrimp and mussels, then all the regular gumbo ingredients like okra, celery and chunks of tomato. There was a really good ratio of all the ingredients, that surprisingly tasted extremely well when mixed together. All the gumbos included rice and came with cornbread on the side. And my mom forgot, but don't YOU forget your side of mac and cheese too... Soooooo worth it!

Yelp
Man what! Food is the bomb! I only got a carry out of the seafood gumbo but when I tell you I'm so happy I could cry. It's spicy, but I don't mind. I was literally just in New Orleans 2 weeks ago. Feel like I'm there all over again

Yelp
Ok here goes: I went here with my daughter last night, I had gotten a coupon from Groupon so we went to try this location. Now, I let my daughter use the Groupon because it was way too much stuff for just me. I didn't taste her food but it did look good. My food I ordered: Baked BBQ Chicken with Collard Greens and Red Beans and Rice. I don't like giving bad reviews but I'm going to keep it honest. The Red Beans and Rice was on point! The Collard Greens not so much, I'm real perplexed as to why folks are putting sugur in the greens! Motor City Food does the same thing. Sugur does not need to be in Greens to the point of them tasting sweet. There is no smoked meat taste or smell in them greens, mines wasn't cooked long enough and the collards need to be cut smaller I didn't enjoy them very much. The Chicken, when I started eating it I can smell like a chicken smell chicken shouldn't have a smell like that when eating it so I stopped. To me they do nothing special to it they ain't brining it nor seasoning it properly to get deep flavors so you don't smell that and I'm clear on why that smell is there it's from them not seasoning the chicken they basically taking it the bag or box and just cooking it. However, the Cornbread is the absolute best from there just like the original location. I feel the Gratiot location may be way better though. My daughter said her food was good she didn't get what I had so I bought her another Groupon to go back. Oh and I had read reviews on how good the Peach Cobbler was so i ordered it AND it was not good and this shows me that some people are so use to eating certain things that they think this is good, they got me feeling real bad for them that they don't know a good Peach Cobbler and I guess if you don't cook or bake or dont know how then you don't know better. The lady who took our order she was super nice she took our order and got the food right she was quick sufficient and I'll go back just because she was so nice I'm not use that in some of the places you eat in certain areas. So shout out to her she does her thang up in there and oh the young man dishing up the food was sufficient also. Next time I'll try something else.

Joyce H.

Yelp
The gumbo was too thin and watery. Try Saucey Crab for good, thick gumbo. I don't know about the other dishes at LCG, but the gumbo has ALWAYS disappointed me.

Yelp
Decent food. Terrible service. Incompetent staff. Last three times I tried to go here it was always an issue with method of payment. If you thinking abt getting take out from here just say fuck it and go to the Jamaican or soul food spot down the street

Yelp
From a recommendation of friends, we've ordered the vegetarian red beans and rice . I've had them twice from each location. They were both very good but each had their own flavors. One had a sweeter flavor than the other. Each came with two corn muffins. One order the muffins were hard as rocks. For the other, they were just right. The line was quite long which is always a great sign. I look forward to trying other items on the menu.

Louann L.

Yelp
Terrible place, poor customer service, employees with a bad attitude . I don't understand how you run a business out of food at lunch time.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Clean and well lit inside, good customer service the food however is the part that is lacking.Creole is about a mix of spices to enhance foods flavor not cups of red hot hot sauce poured in to the point it changes the color of the food.was not happy after spending 74 bucks. Rib tips was tough as could be even though it tasted of being boiled. The. Creole rib sauce was also red hot sauce based. No plans of returning.

Yelp
This place still has good food, but they'll mess your order up! My first bad experience was through Door dash, I ordered Shrimp Jambalaya, Shrimp Gumbo and a Barbecue Chicken Dinner, they gave the Door Dash Guy a large Red Beans and Rice! Needless to say I was refunded my money back. I ordered the next week from the Gratiot Restaurant, because the one on 7 mile near me wasn't taking orders, I finally got in and why did they give me a large Red Beans and Rice? I ordered Shrimp Jambalaya, and Seafood Gumbo and a small red beans and rice! After calling in and waiting until I could go in with the social distancing, I waited an additional 20 mins! I was pissed, they apologized but my order was called in and I gave them additional time and I had to wait with the people ahead of me, so it took me over 2 hours to get my food and it wasn't even warm by time I got home. Think I'm going to start cooking more instead of ordering out!!!

Licia D.

Yelp
Start off with this was my first and more than likely my last time here. The cornbread and lemonade was good, I'll give them that. Unfortunately the gumbo was by far the worst I've ever had. It sucks because I wanted to try this place for years and was told how good the gratiot location was figured this location had to be as good considering theres a second location. But thats not the case and now that I've experienced it myslef I could've done with out.

Y Y.

Yelp
This place had open chemicals underneath the table next to open container that you feed guest in also I ordered the shrimp jambalaya, it had good taste but they put cold ass non flavor shrimp in hot jambalaya and the shrimp wasn't even slightly firm. Raw shrimp mixed in with hot rice.
