Louisiana Creole Gumbo is moving its Eastern Market location to a different building on Gratiot Avenue in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"After more than 50 years in Eastern Market, a long-running Creole gumbo restaurant helmed by Joe Spencer since he bought the business from founder Joseph Stafford in 1970 is relocating a short distance to 2830 Gratiot Avenue, a 100-year-old building currently being renovated for a sit-down dining experience. The move follows a 2022 decision by the property's landlord not to renew the lease; the operation has also expanded with additional locations on the city's northwest side and in Farmington Hills. The new site will include a liquor license for alcoholic beverage sales, a tasting kitchen, two outdoor patios, and entertainment. An exact opening date has not been announced, but Spencer is expected to provide more details at a media ribbon-cutting on Wednesday, November 15." - Serena Maria Daniels

The building is currently under renovation, so you will have to get takeout. It’s so good though that it doesn’t matter where you eat it. We got the seafood gumbo, greens, and rice and beans with sausage and everything was delicious.

Those GREENS! It ain't butter, it ain't salt, it ain't bacon. I'm not joking when I say, I could eat a bucket of nothing but those collard greens. What's in them? How are they so damned good? What kind of wizardry is this? The food is eye-watering amazing, fresh, delicious and a feast for all your senses. I have 2 stars for atmosphere because they are still remodeling and it's an awkward situation inside.

Don’t know what happened. Been coming there for years. Haven’t been in since June, but somthins different with the sausage in the red beans/ texture wise or cut… and it has a lil more heat than usual. And the corn muffins are off. I would often just come for the muffins to go with dinners I would cook. They’re not the best muffins but they were exclusive. Hopefully it was just today.

The red beans & rice was delicious. The mac and cheese was okay. Needed more cheese for me. The seafood creole didn't do it for me. They were out of the gumbo, so I will be back to try that.

I have been coming here for years. Grew up with this place (I’m 40 now :-) ) They served up some of the best comfort food I’ve had in a long time. The fried catfish was perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, tender and flaky on the inside—seasoned just right with that Southern kick. The shrimp were juicy and full of flavor, and paired beautifully with the red beans and rice, which were rich, smoky, and cooked low and slow like they’re supposed to be. Every bite tasted like home-cooked goodness, with layers of flavor that only real Creole cooking can bring. The portions were generous, the vibes were warm and welcoming, and the hospitality made the experience even better.

I’ve been here multiple times and it required me to return without reservations . However this time 10/26/25 3pm I ordered 2 chicken gumbos and they were absolute trash. I’ve never in my life seen celery gumbo with chicken the “roux” was absent. I make better gumbo than what was given to me and my wife. I will return one more time in the future and if it’s not corrected I’m done.

This was my first and last time visiting this restaurant. I've lived in the south for well over 16 years, I'm west Indian and I've also enjoyed authentic Louisiana cooking. I can throw down in the kitchen and I've enjoyed great southern food as well. Let's just say this however was not that. Talk about a disappointment. With a name like "Louisiana Creole Gumbo" me and my stomach were expecting delicious authentic food. I entered the restaurant and was about to order from the self service kiosk but after a few minutes I was greeted and a lady at the counter took my order. The customer service was fine I'd say, as the menu options were explained and the food came fast. However the lack of flavor was the issue. To begin the collard greens had absolutely no seasoning, not one smoked neck bone or meat morsel. Not one pepper flake or dust in sight. The macaroni and cheese was mushy, oily and lacked flavor. To add insult to injury was the gumbo supreme. It tasted like someone tried to doctor up some Campbell's tomato soup, by adding celery, rice etc. I said to myself Lord , not even authentic andoullie sausage? The sausage they used no lie was similar to Vienna sausages. Shrimp was overcooked and the whole combo just lacked that true flavor. While initially it looked promising, the corn bread was bland and solid as a rock smh. I literally broke it in half took a bite and had to just spit it out. This whole experience was especially disappointing as I make it a point to support black businesses however the quality just wasn't there. Whoever is in that kitchen needs to take some cooking lessons because they are putting the namesake of the restaurant to shame. I ended up just trashing the majority of the food, talk about a waste.
