If fried chicken is one of your favorite comfort foods, then a visit to Lovebird on East Ashland Avenue, Doylestown, PA, is very worthwhile. At least, I know that was why I was there.
Brought to us by the folks who created the successful Jules Thin Crust Pizza, Lovebird is the brainchild of that same crew with equal parts great recipe, locally sourced, cage free, vegetarian raised Amish poultry, and simple gray toned shop with one collective table and five sunny bright window stools. As a newbie, I ordered the aptly named "Lovebird Sandwich," which came with a perfectly deep fried battered breast, cole slaw, pickles, lettuce and special sauce mayo, on a freshly baked local bakery brioche roll.
It was one of those meals where the enjoyment began with the first bite through the thick layers of crisp crusty bird, through the tender sweet roll. It was as textural as it was flavorful. It was delicious and fun to eat. And, if you prefer roasted chicken over fried, go for it! They have that, too, and although I didn't taste it, it looked awesome.
Tasted a few fries, and they were quite good, but I'm trying to be good to myself by some modification of diet, so I passed on getting my own. The Lovebird was so great on its own that I really didn't miss them. Also, begged off the Boylan Soda, one of my past faves.
Now for the News Extra! Lovebird is coming to Newtown soon, across Sycamore Street from its sibling, Jules. That is something to get excited about! Not just another knock off franchise, but a true original.
