America’s Forgotten Tea Room Filling Stations | Eater

"Located just off Route 1 in Ashland, this once-combined tea room and filling station catered to motorists with gas pumps and a homey roadside restaurant atmosphere; on Sundays it advertised 75-cent dinners featuring fried chicken or Smithfield ham and drew business from the highway’s growth after paving and widening in the 1920s–30s. The name echoed a contemporary comic strip, and by the mid-20th century the operation had removed or stopped advertising its pumps; the building was later demolished and the site is now occupied by an auto parts store." - Nick Mancall-Bitel

The queens tea was an amazing experience. The sandwiches were delicious, the strawberries and creme tea was absolutely amazing, and we enjoyed every aspect of our meal and the experience. The host was also very attentive and great at explaining menu items and each portion of the meal. We had a vegan with us, and there were nice vegan options.

Google
Absolutely wonderful! The Queen's tea was delicious and the staff were fabulous. Tea recommendations were excellent and we will be back next year. Highly recommend.

Google
Wonderful English tea service in an elegant environment. Freshly made tea sandwiches, scones, and crumpets are paired with a huge selection of tea blends, all served in friendly, unstuffy, gracious way. Great taste and value for a traditional English tea!

Google
I have had the pleasure of enjoying two different Queen’s Teas at Lovejoy’s Tearoom in Ashland, and both were absolutely delightful! The service was impeccable, and we all felt genuinely cared for throughout our visit. I especially loved marveling at the variety of dishes and tea pots, and savoring the abundance of flavors throughout the experience. Truly an enchanting and delicious treat!

Google
Having the high tea at Lovejoy‘s Tea Room was a highlight of my trip to Oregon! I’ve had tea at The Empress Hotel in Victoria and in London, and this experience was every bit as good. The owner was just a delight and ensures that your experience is the best! The service was outstanding and the food was delicious. We had a few leftovers and they were wrapped carefully in little boxes to take home. This tea shop is a gem in a charming little town and worth a visit. I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed the owner and the experience. 💕

Google
Enjoyed queens tea with my friend yesterday and the service and atmosphere was great. We had the deviled egg, and curried chicken salad sandwich. Both tasted amazing along with the scones, crumpets and desserts at the end. It was such a fun experience, and I would recommend it to anyone!

Google
My wife and I stopped on for a walk-in a la carte tea service and had a lovely time. The tea, scones, crumpets, and salad we ordered were all delicious, and the service was excellent. Definitely recommended for dedicated tea fans or those looking to try a tea service for the first time. We'll definitely come back next time we're in town for the theater.

Google
My first high tea and couldn't have asked for a better experience. :) My friend and I came in for a walk-in on a Thursday afternoon. Cute, quaint, cozy, relaxing, and all of our servers were warm and friendly. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
In this ever-coarsening world, Muna Lovejoy's Tea Room is an homage to bygone civility and to the stop-the-world ritual of afternoon tea itself. That one needs advance reservations tells us how deeply we need a sanctuary like Muna's. Let us not downplay her (and her staff's) exquisite attention to detail from the perfect lace tablecloths to the sparkling teacups. And to her selection of quality ingredients and unheard-of depth of knowledge about how to properly serve tea, an art unto itself. Thank you, Muna. Thank you, thank you.

Yelp
What a beautiful tea room!!! The food was very tasty and you certainly need a to go box. The service was consistent and amazing. There was four in our party and we all had an excellent time.

Yelp
This was a great experience. The atmosphere was very cozy with great service. We enjoyed all the food and the teas were amazing! My favorite was their Lady Grey.

Yelp
Absolutely exquisite experiences First we stopped in after a morning of shopping. The lunch drop in menu was delicious. No fuss with my Gluten free requests. Over all lovely. Then the Queens Tea! My daughter is in her tearoom era so we celebrated her 14th birthday. The food was lovely, very filling. No one at ten table finished every bite. Wonderful service. Last the shopping experience- so unique and fun. All around good time!
google avatar

Yelp
This Tea room is a delight! The interior is larger than it looks from the outside with several different seating areas and a store. We were celebrating 2 birthdays and they made the birthday girls feel so special! Love that you each have your own teapot and can select individual teas. We had the chai, midnight in Paris and Strawberries and cream (all so good that I purchased blends of each to take home). The tea comes with choice of sandwiches, salad, fresh fruit, scones, crumpets and sweet treats at the end. Very reasonably priced for everything it included and perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion or just have a wonderful meal! Service was outstanding by all the staff. A wonderful experience!

Yelp
We went during our honeymoon and were treated to a gorgeous service. Selections were delicious. Owned by the same family that founded the OG Lovejoy's in San Francisco. Make a reservation for the Queen's Tea, and order the Chocolate Truffle Tea! You will not be disappointed.

Claire N.

Yelp
A group of 5 came to Ashland to see some plays and enjoy the surrounding area. One of the most delightful memories from our trip is our tea at Lovejoy's. From the moment we entered it felt like we were in for a special experience. And we were. The food and teas (what a varied selection!) were outstanding and the team that looked after us couldn't have been more delightful. Go and experience for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Wonderful service. Perfectly timed treats and delicious massive tea selections. Great atmosphere and a great place for an afternoon tea.

Yelp
My 2 friends just had such a wonderful experience and delicious deeeelightfull Tea time today! Muna (the proprietor) creates and provides such a lovely and welcoming environment it allows for magical conversations and really special and healing times... The Queen's Tea sandwiches are delicious, (including fresh fruit and salad greens), specially made English style scones complete with jam and clotted cream, and warm crumpets with lemon curd followed by sweets insure that you won't leave hungry! There is an extravagant selection of proper loose leaf Teas brewed in the pot ...and the ambiance and retail shopping is so warm and inviting

Yelp
I stopped into the tea room with my mom and my 3 months old baby and we had an amazing experience! The restaurant is so cozy and cute, the food was delicious and justvthe right size portions! The lady serving us was extra nice and helpful. We had a great time and will definately go back again!

Greg N.

Yelp
What a fantastic experience! We came in with our two young daughters and selected the Queen's tea, which was so lovely! The service from Muna and her staff was impeccable and the parlor was so charming. My wife and I are in the service industry and were so impressed with everything here. We will highly recommend Lovejoy's Tea Room to everyone!

Yelp
I took my grand daughter there for tea. We had a grand time trying the tea and eating cucumber sandwiches. The service was impeccable and very friendly. My only complaint is the price. We had the Queens Tea and the bill was over $100. I wasn't surprised because I had done my research prior to making a reservation. Since there was no protein served, which is where most of the costs are I was mildly disappointed with the sweets that were offered. All in all we had a nice time.

Ellen R.

Yelp
We stopped into Lovejoy's before heading home to the Bay Area and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch there. The tea selection was amazing. I had the blood orange and my husband had the Yorkshire Gold. Just reading the tea menu took a while. So many choices! And we were able to take the extra tea with us for the ride home. I loved the apple chicken walnut cranberry sandwiches, but my husband went with the artichoke hummus, salmon, and ham with spicy mustard. We were both very happy campers, and polished off the whole tray. We made sure to save stomach space for crumpets and scones, and left for home full and contented. Muna and her staff are welcoming and attentive, and the decor is delightful. We highly recommend Lovejoy's and will definitely come in on our next trip north.

Yelp
What a delightful way to spend a St. Patty's Day!! Everything was delicious! I LOVED the tasting of the three teas, as I found a new tea I would have never tried before. I also appreciated the background instrumental Irish music. The service is always wonderful.

Carly B.

Yelp
Such an amazing high tea experience. I took my daughter to celebrate her 4th birthday. The service and food were absolutely wonderful. She said it was her best birthday ever. I cannot wait to come back again.

Yelp
Absolutely ADORED this place! We came for a Sister's Evening and had such a great experience; the teas themselves were delicious as was the food! Each sandwich we got we enjoyed them so much! Tip top customer service, Moona (apologies if I misspelled your name) was such a sweetheart, she remembered my family from the multiple times my Sister has brought everyone visiting OR. The "Walk-In Special" was what we decided this time around, more than enough tea and food for 2, but we definitely will be trying the Queen's Tea next time. If you're in Ashland, this is a must-try, you will not regret your time and money spent here!

Lyndy O.

Yelp
Most delightful! My five daughters, my granddaughter and I have made a tradition of having the Queens' Tea here twice a year! The food is always perfect no matter what you order and the service is so delightful! If you balk at the price, don't! ...one year they were closed so we tried making our own tea after the Lovejoy's menu and style...we decided to be sure to plan on a day they are open!! So much work and the atmosphere and service and tea selection alone is worth it!!! This is a must do in Ashland!!

Yelp
If you like English area and are in Ashland, stop by Lovejoy's. I saw their ad in the OSF program and I'm so glad I went. The owner was both knowledgeable and helpful. They had a wide selection of teas and sandwiches. If you don't want the super fancy Queen's tea you can order a la cart. The ambiance was perfect and she kept saying 'We're in no rush. Stay as long as you like. '

David B.

Yelp
I have to visit lovejoy's every couple of months their selection of teas, sandwiches, scones etc is wonderful. The setting as with everything there is remarkably elegant it is the epitome of the classic English tea room. So for any special occasion or a quiet moment to spoil yourself give Lovejoy's a try you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This place is so good! My mom loves a high tea or afternoon tea and we've been to a bunch of them, even the tik tok/insta-places in bigger cities. This one is our favorite, for the food, the service, the overall decor and atmosphere. Luna is an amazing hostess and she embodies what you think of with an English tea. Highly recommend! PS-if you call ahead, or even if you forget, they are SO GOOD at adjusting to dietary restrictions. I've done a vegan tea before and it was great! And one time they thought I was gluten free and had options ready.

Rachel L.

Yelp
We came here as part of our 40th anniversary celebration weekend, and had a wonderful time. The food is scrumptious and what we expect for an afternoon tea. The tea blends were delicious. The service was excellent, and we felt very welcomed and treated like the Royal Couple that we were for the afternoon. The ambiance was tastefully done, and we especially liked the portrait of Queen Victoria. We highly recommend Lovejoy's Tea Room, which is excellent value for the price. The owner is extremely friendly. We were able to purchase tea, and lemon curd.

Yelp
Lovejoy's oozes eclectic charm, with its intentional hodge-podge of china and surrounding decor. Perhaps a perfect blend for Ashland, with two parts traditional British grandmother, and one part Mad Hatter, Lovejoy's serves up old world afternoon tea, a mostly forgotten experience here in the States. We had their flagship Queen's Tea service, which included a bottomless pot of tea for each member of our party, two small sandwich selections, fruit, a scone, a crumpet, and chocolate treat. Pacing was perfect, and our hostess provided clear guidance to show us the way. I think our whole group was happy with our experience, and the tea selections were great, allowing us to share and sample each other's choices. (Scottish Caramel Pu-Erh, FTW!) Then - there is the small matter of the bill. Hey, this is a great and unique experience, but you certainly have to pony up for it. I think it's perfectly fine for a special event, but at over $40 per person with tax/tip, be aware that's what you're signing up for. I'm glad to have experienced Lovejoy's, but I can see how others might conclude that it just isn't really their...cup of tea.

Yelp
Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect when I said "yes" to some friends who asked me if I wanted to "go to tea" for my birthday. What ended up happening was one of the most fun birthdays of my adult life! The tea room itself is adorable, with such an eclectic supply of tea related things, I could have spent hours just looking at all the different patterns. One of the bathrooms had the most hilarious dog theme - seriously, go find the dog themed bathroom! Anyways, the teas were quite good, the little sandwiches actually filled me up, and I discovered that a crumpet is not shaped like a trumpet. Why did I even think that?? The service was great. Everyone was friendly and kind. 10 outta 10, would recommend.

Llalania G.

Yelp
Utterly charming. A delightfully relaxing place with attentive service, a charming atmosphere and all the details you want in a proper tea. Be prepared for a leisurely tea as nothing is fast and it shouldn't be. Though they will do their best to accommodate you if you are up against a time limit. The little sandwiches are adorable and while they are small, you drink so much tea that anything more would be over kill. I did a solo walk in and they were able to seat me no problem. They have quite the tea list and with a full pot, you drink plenty of delicious tea! I had a wonderful time reading quietly while I enjoyed some light early jazz, sipped tea and watched traffic pass out the window. A perfect solo afternoon and I loved every minute. I wish more such places existed here in the states but they are a rare treat and worth indulging in.

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Love love love this beautiful tea room! The owner and staff couldn't have been any nicer! I brought my father who has dementia and they were so kind to him. We were so impressed by their professionalism and courtesy. They really made our experience so special. We loved all of the delicious food and will come again! You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This was a wonderful, unique experience. Having grown up with a grandmother who regularly hosted proper teas, I relish every opportunity to partake as an adult. This was the first time my 7YO daughter had taken tea, and as I predicted- she loved it! Moona was our server; she was warm, knowledgeable and friendly. My family of 3 sat at their window seat, decorated with a wonderfully eclectic setting. We had sandwiches (cucumber + cream cheese, roast beef + horseradish, smoked salmon + cream cheese), scones with clotted cream and jam and crumpets with lemon curd. My husband and I shared a bottomless pot of their house breakfast tea; my daughter enjoyed peppermint tea. Everything was delicious, brought quickly and served with care. We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Janelle K.

Yelp
Tea, scones, sandwiches, and soup were all delicious. They were very friendly and welcoming even though we didn't have a reservation and came in with three small children. They also had lots of cute things to buy besides food, like fascinators and little tiaras. I would definitely come back here!
google avatar

Marisa H.

Yelp
This lovely tea room is a delightful addition to Ashland's restaurants! We have visited twice now and have had a wonderful experience both times. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable, and the food is delicious! It's best to make a reservation if you want the full Queen's tea, and it's well worth it! The loose-leaf tea is also for sale, as well as some beautiful china and other tea-related paraphernalia. I highly recommend d this tea room!
google avatar

Sparkle H.

Yelp
We had an absolutely amazing time!! Annie was an exceptional host, and very thorough, going over the menu and detailing our many choices. All of our courses were extraordinarily delicious and the tea was perfect. She made our special occasion even more delightful with her sweet and friendly personality. We can't wait until we come back. We even bought one of their soft and comfy 'Tea shirts'. The front room is so beautiful and full of unique gifts. The back room is just as beautiful but more secluded and private. Even the bathrooms are exquisitely decorated. Everything is so eye appealing! Thank you so much Annie and Moona for the great experience! It was a pleasure.

Yelp
My mother and I came here for the Queen's Tea service to celebrate my birthday. I immediately was impressed with how kind the service was and the decorations and ambiance of Lovejoy's Tea Room. The entire experience was some of the most fun I've ever had, and the tea and food were equally as amazing. Lovejoy's will be on my list of places to visit each time I return to Ashland!

Janine K.

Yelp
This is so much fun to do with your girlfriends! Everything was top-notch - fresh and delicious. It was served on mis-matched cups & saucers which added to the fun. Such a wonderful find! Muna, the owner is enchanting and she adds to the ambiance making this a perfect afternoon treat.
google avatar

Yelp
We were lucky enough to grab a table on opening weekend. Muna and her whole staff were very attentive and the service was amazing. The tea menu is vast, the pots bottomless. We had the Queens Tea and it was lovely. Finger sandwiches, fresh fruit, warm scones, crumpets with clotted cream, lemon curd and raspberry jam finishing with petite fours and a selection of truffles. Service took about 1:30-2 hours, leisurely and not at all rushed. Make sure you're hungry before you go! * Fancy hats optional Cannot wait to go back, we literally sat around and discussed who we'd take back!

Sarah G.

Yelp
I cannot possibly recommend Lovejoy's more highly! The food and tea were absolutely delicious. There's a wonderful selection available, and the everything was well-balanced and had depth and complexity. Even the fruit was especially yummy. The service was STELLAR. Like, jaw-droppingly good. I felt like not only was every need I knew I had anticipated, but even needs I didn't know I had were anticipated! Plus, the staff was both friendly and elegant/professional. I love the ambiance, too. The back room where the Queen's Tea takes place looks out over beautiful trees. The decor comes off like the owner has been thoughtfully collecting wonderful pieces for years. It's a touch eclectic, and somehow it all comes together to create a classy yet cozy feel. My mom has been to teas at some very fancy places in England, but she said Lovejoy's is her favorite tea room yet. My family and myself had a really exceptional, special experience here. If you like high tea, GO!

Yelp
This place is NOT TO BE MISSED! My siblings and I were attending the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland when we came across this British style tea room and decided to have tea there. That was a decision we were extremely happy about afterwards. The place has a unique interior which you can see in my pictures. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious! The owner, Moona, is a very pleasant lady who made us feel extra special as she and another girl served us tea items one after the other. The sandwiches were so tasty, I want to go back (from California) just to have more! I ordered the Forest Berries Rose Hip tea and drank a whole teapot, even though I'm not a tea person. I fell in love with the decor, (and of course the desserts!) We all agreed that it was one of the best experiences we had on our mini-vacation in Ashland.

Lori A.

Yelp
Nice, quaint place with great teas and accompaniments. Sandwiches and petit four varieties were good - and delicious! Highly recommend the peach Bellini tea - amazing flavor!

Lisandra M.

Yelp
Be Prepared to have all your worries simply melt away while you enjoy the ambiance and devour yummy treats! Lovejoys is Ashlands worst kept secret! Just beyond the main Plaza sits this magical place. A place we admittedly walked by a few times before going what the heck let's try it out. English Tea Service was never a thought when it came to date ideas for my husband and I but now we absolutely love getting to come here for lunch. Yes you will NOT leave hungry! You certainly don't HAVE to dress up to enjoy this place although it's really fun to. Munas staff all make you feel like the Queen herself and are attentive and kind and keep your tea nice and hot! With sandwiches packed with flavor in between what feels like clouds for bread and a large variety of Teas to choose from. You really can't go wrong! They usually have a walk in special but I really encourage you and your friends or family to reserve a spot for the Queens Service and be prepared to enjoy yourselves! We hope LoveJoy sticks around for many years

Yelp
This tea shop was so accommodating and prepared a to go picnic for us. We ate it at the nearby lithia park before a show. The crumpets and scones were warm and served with plentiful cream, lemon curd, and raspberry jam. The sandwiches were delicious, especially the chicken curry, and the tea was just right. I can't wait to go back for more.

Ja S.

Yelp
Relatively calm on weekdays, which is nice for walk-ins! It's very peaceful inside with many eclectic decor to look at in all directions. The service was quick and workers were very sweet and knowledgeable. Tea was refilled halfway through the experience to prevent over-steeping, so that was nice! I loved the chicken salad sandwiches, but looking forward to trying other fillings next time as well. The little chocolates & caramels served at the end were delightful-- not too sweet, but a perfect end.
google avatar

Pam E.

Yelp
We were treated like queens the moment we walked in. The ambiance is beautiful, peaceful and so unique, little delights around every corner. The food so fresh and yummy. The curry egg salad was delish! Probably the best scones I've ever had. The bottomless pot of tea was a nice treat as well. The price was well worth it. The abundance of food was more than we expected. Muna and her staff were extremely attentive and made us feel very special. I would highly recommend this for not only a special occasion, but just a really nice self care treat to yourself. Next time I go back to Ashland this is definitely an every time stop.

Yelp
A delightful way to spend a couple of hours being hosted with a lovely provision of selected finger sandwiches, mixed greens, fresh fruit, scones, crumpets, petit fours and bottomless tea - The Queen's Tea! An eclectic collection of tea pots, cups and cozies for purchase as well. Staff are super friendly and food is fresh and yummy.

Jason L.

Yelp
My husband and I love afternoon tea and Lovejoy's was an excellent experience. The tea was wonderful with a great blend that was fragrant and flavorful. The food exceeded our expectations and the service was great. Of course, the decor is super cute and cozy. This is one of those rare places where the passion of the owner comes shining through in all aspects.

Yelp
My partner and I had a lovely time at Lovejoy's this afternoon. We tried the cranberry walnut chicken sandwiches, the hummus artichoke sandwiches, and the deviled egg sandwich-- all absolutely delicious with wonderful soft bread (without crust, of course). We enjoyed chestnut and chocolate truffle black tea, who's pots were diligently kept full by the friendly staff. Nice for the price. A lovely, atmospheric experience. I'll be back!

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
This was our last meal out in Ashland for our trip, and it made a delightful close to the vacation. We booked the day's final seating of the Queen's Tea and made it our dinner. Tea, salad, fruit, sandwiches, scones, crumpets, and sweets were all delicious and beautifully presented. Service was wonderful, and it's clear that Luna and her staff understand the ritual of tea service. The ambiance was peaceful and comfortable, and the decor was charming. Luna stopped to chat for a bit when she came by with the bill. Our B&B hostess says she and her daughter go to Lovejoy's every time her daughter is in town. I look forward to making Lovejoy's part of our Ashland experience.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. Took my mother and 11 year old daughter and we had such a good time. Wonderful food, tea and service. I strongly recommend it.

Yelp
Lovejoy Tea in Ashland, Oregon is a true treasure for So. Oregon!! My son, (in his 30s, my husband in his 70s) and I enjoyed 'High Tea' today. I had no idea how delightful and refreshing this tea shop and eatery could be! I've been in Ashland for 40 + years, appreciate and enjoy Ashland's restaurants that are committed to excellence in food and service. Lovejoy is extraordinarily special, provides a unique experience of savoring a true 'tea' experience and provides 5 star delicacies and service! Muna, the owner, is an expert in providing a culinary adventure that is not to be missed!!

Holly S.

Yelp
The Best! My friends and I have had high tea in many different places, including in the UK, and we all agreed that the high tea (Queen's Tea) at Lovejoy's is among the best we've had. Muna is a very attentive owner, and has created a delightful experience. We got to choose our tea, two sandwiches, and two sweets at the end. The service also comes with salad, fresh fruit, a scone with imported double Devon cream, jam and lemon curd, and a toasted crumpet. The hot water in our tea was refreshed several times to prevent over-steeping. Everything was incredible. Highly recommend the Deviled egg sandwich! We'll be back next time we're in Ashland!

Yelp
My second visit to Lovejoy's today was as sublime as the first. The Queen's Tea Service is perfect with delightful tea sandwiches, perfect scones with clotted cream and raspberry preserves as well as crumpets with lemon curd. Fresh fruit and mixed green salad are included and the feast ends with exquisite truffles and petit fours. Service was attentive and charming. My friend and I left feeling as though we had been on a mini vacation We are planning to return with all our favorite people. Great place for a birthday party or baby shower, too. Did I mention the incredible varieties of tea? Seriously- don't miss this experience!

Florence M.

Yelp
Today my friends and I decided to visit our fourth location of Lovejoys' located right here in Ashland Oregon. Run and owned by the delightful Muna Nash we were welcomed warmly into the charming English tearoom ambiance. We had booked for the High Tea Service which was more than generous with its delicious sandwiches, crumbly scones, crumpets and Petit Fours and of course a wonderful selection of teas. We highly recommended visiting this tearoom while visiting Ashland Oregon.

Yelp
I can't believe this place doesn't have more reviews, it was so much fun! We were enticed by their outdoor decor and "walk in special" (slightly lighter than a full tea service). They have oodles of teas to choose from, delicious food (my god, can I have that scone recipe?), and the loveliest decorations and atmosphere. The person who served us was so kind and knowledgeable. Seriously do yourself a favor and go here.
