20 Vegan Burgers To Try in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Though steaming bowls of pho and cool summer rolls dominate the menu at Loving Hut on El Cajon Blvd., the American dishes do not pander to timid tastes. The house-made mushroom patty of the Loving Hut Burger comes smothered in thick oyster mushroom sauce, cupped by iceberg lettuce with tomatoes, pickles, onions, and more sauteed mushrooms. Served with a pile of fries, this is one of the best veggie burger bargains in the city." - Kelly Bone

I just had an amazing experience at the Loving Hut Plantbased Vegan restaurant in San Diego. If you’re into plant-based eating or just love delicious food, this place is an absolute must-visit. They’ve got a fantastic mix of Eastern and Western dishes that really cater to all tastes. I tried one of their burgers and onion rings. The burger was full of flavor, and those onion rings were crispy with light oil. It’s the kind of comfort food that makes you feel good. But the highlight of my visit was definitely the fresh-made gluten-free bite sized mini-donuts. They were incredible! Light, and low sugar with a melted chocolate sauce for you to dunk as you please. Definitely a treat you don’t want to miss. The staff were friendly and passionate about the food they serve. They made sure I had everything I needed and were genuinely excited to share their recommendations from the menu. The vibe at Loving Hut is perfect for small groups or to eat by yourself. It’s cozy and inviting, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. I can’t wait to go back and try more of their delicious offerings.

This is my favorite vegan restaurant in San Diego — especially this location! The food is always fresh and super delicious, and the little market inside is full of unique plant-based goodies I hadn’t seen before. I also really love that they care for a stray cat near the restaurant — such a kind and compassionate touch. 💚

Original: Lowkey, kind of a bum restaurant. As a vegan myself, I do like it. It just their food is soooo basic ahhahhahaha. I rated five stars because the food was enjoyable enough for me not to hate anything about this place. Why did I call this restaurant a bum? Just read the other reviews, and they removed so much stuff that I liked that I don't even like going here anymore. The food now is so painfully inoffensive that I can't really critique it negatively. Like imagine the most nonoffending vegan food you have ever tasted. That is how I feel right now. Like, is it good? I guess... But like I wish it had some5hing more EDIT: Actually, there are really good now!!! EDIT 2: Hmmmm, I should probably explain myself. So I went back to the restaurant to try some new item, and [[WOWE]], was it an improvement. Like... I feel like the food now got an increase in flavor profile. I don't know if it was because it was the new items (the cali burrito and cauliflower wring), or they just improved the taste... but I need to order the original item again to double check. So yeah, I would definitely recommend going here :3

Food AND service are EXCELLENT! I have taken multiple Non Vegans here and they too rave about the food. One of my most Non Vegan friends (the guy owns 3 traeger grills/smokers) absolutely loves the California Burrito here. He enjoys it so much that he stops by Loving Hut when he is in town and grabs one... ON HIS OWN and then quickly texts me to show off. He loves that it's "very easy to get to and is located right off the 15 freeway with plenty of parking" -his words. My Go To is either The "Spicy Cha Cha" dish with white rice and a salad or the "Kung Pao" ....as I type this I wish I was sitting there with chopsticks in hand.... now I am hungry... so good. They offer a classic "American Style" burger/sandwich menu. The spicy chicken sandwich is ridiculously good. Have to mention the "SeaCo Catch platter" bc If you haven't tried SeaCo Catch yet... it's the best vegan version of fysh anywhere and they are a San Diego based company. The SHAKES are freaking the best shakes in SD... seriously. This last time I visited, the server mentioned home made lemonade... I went with the Pina Colada style and WOW. It was 32 oz and over the top good. I ordered another one with no ice to take home and put it in the freezer. The Loving Hut in Mira Mesa is an absolute MUST. The FOOD, the Vibe, the Drinks, the Service and the SHAKES.

A few years ago I would have given this Loving Hut 5 stars, unfortunately more recently things have gone down hill. Is it still the best vegan food in San Diego? I would no longer say so and a main reason is the fact that it's not organic, the portions have gotten small and even some organic restaurants are cheaper. The menu ranges from Thai food and Asian fusion to American comfort food. The menu is a little different each time I come here but it has stayed mostly the same. One questionable decision was removing the Surf and Turf burrito and just having fish tacos now instead. Upon looking at the menu online there is a friendly but questionable message that reads: "Modifications kindly declined". With the prices for items here I have to question that decision and the reason for it itself. While the outside of the restaurant looks cute with a little hobbit door it is also very much attached to the cleaners building next door, not exactly the most appetizing thing. As far as the inside of the restaurant well, it's not very special and feels dated which is why I usually order to-go. The food is not organic and that's worth pointing out, especially at the price-point. In recent years the prices have not only gone up but the portions have gotten smaller and the sides that are included with some items are especially small. For example I ordered the Cali burrito and while it comes with a side of chips that portion was very small (see picture). My girlfriend ordered the chow chow garlic noodles with "shrimp" and while it was good it literally just had 3 pieces of "shrimp" and chowmein noodles and was $16. My Cali burrito was cut in half despite ordering to-go which is a big no-no in my book. Overall the prices and small portions make me question if it's worth it to come here again, as much as I want to support small-ish businesses. Additionally the hours are a little strange

I wish I could sit here and put into words how satisfying my experience at this restaurant was. I ended up ordering an appetizer, a meal and a dessert. Why the heck not? The place itself was beautiful, clean, welcoming and rad! The staff there are so groovy. Different personalities but all so awesome! I love the diversity. I will add photos of what I ordered but I was blown away by my fish sandwich. As someone who has been looking EVERYWHERE for the closet thing to a mimic of gosh, I was absolutely mind-blown. The texture=exactly the same. The smell=you wouldn’t even question it. And the taste was 10/10. Amazing experience. Will be coming back very often. Thank you so much for having us :)

First time here with the family. Everything was hot and pretty good. The MuSushi looked really good but the sushi rice lacked flavor (it was just jasmine rice stuffed in nori). Really awesome service though.
