The 14 Best Bars In Shoreditch - London - The Infatuation

"This handsome basement bar beneath British restaurant, Counter 71, specialises in American whisky. But forget that and direct your attention towards the expert classics and the London Negroni which tastes like it’s been infused with the soul of an orange. It can be quiet during the week, but the bar staff are always down for a nerdy chat about vermouth." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing

London’s New Bar Openings - London - The Infatuation

"This is the kind of special relationship we can get on board with. Counter 71 is a restaurant that champions the British Isles, but its downstairs cellar bar, Lowcountry, is all about smoky American whiskey and Southern shrimp and grits prawn toast. Inspired by the chef’s childhood in Alabama and South Carolina, there are Southern-leaning drinks and the house cocktail is a beer with a shot of bourbon or rye on the side." - daisy meager, sinead cranna

Lowcountry - Review - Shoreditch - London - The Infatuation

"When we first visited Lowcountry in Shoreditch, there was a schnauzer roaming the banquette like he was on a press tour. And it says a lot about this handsome basement bar, beneath British restaurant Counter 71, that a meet-and-greet with canine Clooney was not the highlight of our night. The highlight was the cocktails. This intimate whisky-specialist bar does the classics so well you’ll feel like you’re discovering them all over again, for the very first time. The London Negroni tastes like it’s been infused with the soul of an orange and the martinez comes with a side of genuinely interesting bar chat about how it’s technically the forefather of the martini. This place can be quiet during the week but it’s a great respite from the chaos of Old Street, and the martini flight for two is prime date night material." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

One of London's hidden gems and a favourite of all the bars visited during London cocktail week. The owner was super welcoming, friendly and interesting. A relatively small yet somehow spacious underground speak easy style bar. Excellent cocktails and whiskey selection. 10/10 highly recommend

A Subterranean Gem – Lowcountry, 71 Nile Street, Shoreditch, N1 Hidden beneath Counter 71, one of Shoreditch’s acclaimed restaurants, Lowcountry is a basement bar specialising in American whiskey and classic cocktails. It takes its name from the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, known for its marshlands and slow, soulful pace — a spirit the bar channels in both atmosphere and drinks. What makes it special: Whisky focus: shelves lined with American bottles, many sourced directly from the Lowcountry. Cocktail mastery: classics like the London Negroni (infused with deep citrus notes) and the Martinez, served with engaging bartender conversation. Atmosphere: a moody den with blue‑grey stone walls, green‑veined marble tables, and a striking red‑tile bar — intimate, laid‑back, and slightly seductive. Bartender talent: Bailey Mae Paynter leads the bar, praised for creativity and knowledge. Unexpected charm: reviewers even mention a schnauzer wandering the banquette during one visit — a playful touch that adds to the bar’s character.

Whiskey, Marble & Mystery at Lowcountry – Shoreditch Hidden beneath Counter 71 on Nile Street, Lowcountry is a cocktail bar that feels like a secret worth keeping. Inspired by the coastal marshes of South Carolina, this basement den blends American whiskey culture with East London edge, offering a space that’s intimate, seductive, and quietly spectacular. The interiors are striking: blue-grey stone walls, green-veined marble tables, and a long red-tiled bar that anchors the room. It’s softly lit, with scattered seating and a hushed atmosphere that invites slow sips and deep conversation. The vibe is laid-back but refined — perfect for first dates, solo escapes, or late-night musings. Cocktails are the main event. The London Negroni is a revelation — citrus-forward and complex — while the Martinez comes with a side of genuinely engaging bar chat. Their signature Fat Fashion (a twist on the Old Fashioned) is rich, smoky, and unforgettable. The menu is divided into Signatures, Classics, and Historical cocktails, with a strong focus on American whiskeys, many sourced directly from the Lowcountry region.

An absolute gem of a cocktail bar. Ryan and the team were so welcoming and looked after us all night. They were happy to talk us through the cocktails in detail and make recommendations based on our preferences. The cocktails are world class - some of the best I’ve ever had. The Fat Fashion was my favourite of the night. The decor is brilliant and the place has a great vibe and atmosphere. I can’t recommend it enough and look forward to coming back.

Really cool bar, great staff. I've been several times now. Really good cocktails and a really good selection of bourbons and ryes if you're a whisky lover at good prices. Bar snacks were also delicious, we've ordered a number of them several times.

One of my ultimate favourite bars in London. Ryan is so knowledgeable and fun to talk to. All the drinks are always creative and well balanced. Great music, great vibes.

Hugely average cocktails, the kind students make at the first year of university. Add in some generic decor and a massively gakked up clientele and thats your lot.

What a gem a little off the beaten path in Shoreditch. The best selection of bourbon in London, solid cocktails and bar snacks. The staff are delightful as well.
