Lowry & Baker Review - Notting Hill - London - The Infatuation

"Lowry and Baker is a homely little café in Portobello Road that serves breakfast and brunch on some cute vintage-type crockery, along with cakes and other sweet things. It’s a casual neighbourhood spot, so if you’re just getting coffee at the weekend, know that it’s going to be busy and you’ll probably have settle for a takeaway situation. If you want to sit down, go during the week." - Rianne Shlebak

Perfect! Loved Lowry & Baker. First time visitors and it was a real find. Even though busy, service was impeccable, food was served quickly and was simply delicious. Lovely coffee. Perfectly cooked poached eggs. Divine crispy Parma ham, best French fries. Felt lucky we got a table outside and quickly. Clearly was meant to be. Nothing to fault.

Don’t miss this place! Small but cosy, perfect for breakfast. We had a great table by the window - great view and you feel tucked in. Amazing food! We had green breakfast (super fresh and tender spinach and broccoli), breakfast special and to finish off we split the pancakes - they were tender and not too sweet, perfect for morning meal! Also the staff is super polite.

Such a beautiful find in Notting Hill! The food is excellent and the portion sizes are good - and the cakes are AMAZING. Gutted they don't give out the recipe of the home made lemon loaf but I will definitely keep going back for it. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is lovely, especially now the weather is improving and you can sit outside and enjoy the sun as well. I'll be back again soon!

Amazing little cafe, quite busy on the weekends for a reason! The service was friendly and the food was delicious. Make sure you get a cookie on your way out too - to die for. 10/10 will be coming back!

Popped in for brunch on a rainy Saturday morning. We got there around 10:15 and waited 10 minutes for a table for 2. We had the red velvet pancakes and corn fritter stack, both of which are must haves! The drinks were warm and rich, perfect to fight off the dreary weather. The decor is so cute and the restaurant is very clean. The staff were so sweet! *UPDATE 11/2024* They have now expanded into another space in Portobello Road next to the original. The menus differ between the places so read carefully. We dined at 41 and, again, everything was excellent. The Corn Fritter Stack remains sensational but the English breakfast was delightful. Their Chai Latte is one of my favorites in London. I adore this place and look forward to returning soon.

5 stars Absolutely lovely little spot tucked away in Notting Hill. Popped in for a quick bite and was genuinely impressed. The hot chocolate was proper—rich, velvety, and just the right amount of indulgent. I had the Green Breakfast as well, and it was fresh, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully presented. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere had that charming, cosy feel you hope for in a neighbourhood café. A cracking find—will definitely be back!

Forget all the big breakfast/brunch names in the area with 1h queues... What you get here is true home cuisine but with a level of detail from the chef you only get in more flashy and expensive spots. A true gem.

What a great little gem at the end of Portobello Rd. Not only was the food wonderful and the coffee fantastic. I can’t recommend this little restaurant highly enough. The breakfast was amazing and the little coffee shop vibe was to me worth every single penny. Precious 🥰

Yelp
We had a good time here but I think they are stretching their wait staff a bit too much. We waited quite a long time for the food and they forgot an order from our next table. Very nice of them to suggest to take the service charge off for the next table but I felt bad for the girl because she was so sweet and polite. My iced matcha latte was £4.60, which is insane even without the tax and service. And my friends iced black Americano was so watered down. The food is not bad tho, we see the other customers food and it all looks amazing. My corn fritter is probably the smallest of them all. They also have a cute outdoor seating area so great for summer!

Yelp
Yeah this place is now on my sh1t list after last weekend. My friend and I stopped by here about 3pm last Saturday, where there were PLENTY of empty tables at the back and there wasn't a queue. We were undecided on food or drink. Yet the woman at the counter said the tables were reserved for those eating brunch only. It was THREE O CLOCK FGS.

Yelp
The cakes are still just as delicious as they have always been but something's changed at Lowry & Baker. I must admit that I don't visit quite as regularly as I used to and didn't notice anything different on my last couple of mid-week visits. Service has never been the strongest point here, but always forgivable as preparing fresh food on site, taking orders and distributing them around the tables can be quite a task for a small team ... but a visit on Saturday afternoon really took me by surprise. A member of staff blocked our way to the back of the cafe and asked in a rather abrupt manner what we had come for. The answer of coffee and cake was not instantly acceptable (at half past three ...) and one of the other members behind the counter intervened. What a contrast to the casual and relaxed atmosphere I've always loved here. There are other subtle changes too and the shabby retro look has been updated with kitsch, the crockery is still vintage but no longer grannie's hand me downs. Such a shame, particularly as there is plenty of choice down this stretch of Portobello now ...

Yelp
Such a cute little spot! A lot of the reviews said that they were busy, but we were seriously the only people in there. The hostess was very sweet and they brought us our orders hot and timely. Super yummy breakfast for a cold rainy day. Definitely would recommend for travelers looking for a healthier alternative to the "English Breakfast".

Yelp
One of the many hidden gems I found in London. I first heard of Lowry & Baker while working in New York. A friend of mine had just returned from London with raving reviews of this little place she had stumbled upon during her time there. Not that long after I found myself working in London and with my friends hype in mind, decided I had to try this place out for myself. From the moment you walk in you're hooked. The aromas of sautéed mushrooms, garlic, and coffee all fill the room while tickling your senses and begging you to sit down to befriend them. The staff greets you with a courtesy that is reminiscent of that kind home welcoming you find at your family Sunday breakfast table after being apart for too long. The groove of the oldies playing on the speakers in the background give this sort of pulsing energy to the room. The people unknowingly swaying to the beat of their own conversation, it's close to perfect. And then food arrives. Sourdough bread accompanied by a generous amount of smashed avocado, with a poached egg a piece. To top it off, a side of Salmon and those sautéed mushrooms that lead me to the menu in the first place. Sipping my late between bites, I could not be happier! I've come here 3 times in my short trip to London, which is not something I often do given such a large city filled with so many options. This place is something special. All in all if you're looking for the perfect place to start your day, start it with Lowry & Baker!

Yelp
Got food for takeaway last Sunday. Although it's a cramped and kitschy place, the staff was quite friendly. I ordered the falafel and quinoa salad and the artichoke, red pepper and Brie cheese sourdough sandwich. The salad for lunch a day later was great! Three crunchy, tasty falafels hit the spot. The dressing, which I had on the side, had a nice lemon flavour. The sandwich was a decent size for the price and the fillings were extremely tasty. This place would definitely be a favorite if I lived nearby!

Yelp
Great breakfast nook. Cozy atmosphere. Has the L&B green breakfast - loved it but wish it had regular sourdough instead of charcoal sourdough (that's on me, though, since I misread it as chargrilled).

Yelp
We were walking around Notting Hill and came across this place. We had to wait a little bit to be seated but the restaurant staff was so nice and when we sat down, we got everything right away. The coffee was unreal and the food was too good for words. Seriously amazing. I recommend to anyone who wants a little homey brunch place in London. 20/10 seriously go here you will have the most amazing brunch ever. And get the iced latte it was sick!!!!

Yelp
Seriously cute little cafe on Portobello Road, up where it's a bit quieter and not quite so overrun with London souvenir shoppers. Here's why I like Lowry & Baker. 1. They have an ampersand in their name. I appreciate ampersands. 2. They serve Monmouth coffee! I also appreciate good coffee. 3. Cute and casual setup with a bunch of mismatched chairs and tables, a basic island/counter for preparing food and a regular kitchen stove in the wall. It's kind of like walking into your friend's kitchen, if your friend were willing to make you a wide range of breakfast items, sandwiches, and specials on command. I need a friend like this. 4. Tasty homemade food, prepared right in front of you. I had a pesto goat cheese panini with a side salad of greens and sunflower seeds for £4, but had a tough time choosing between homemade quiche and a goat curd, fig and honey sandwich. Life is hard. 5. The bathroom is tiled with mirrors and has a sewing machine. It's simultaneously a bit Studio 54/your mum's closet. 6. They have a frequent buyer wall constructed of Polaroid pictures with stickers. I appreciate creative loyalty schemes (see Tina, We Salute You) and even dis-loyalty schemes (see Prufrock Coffee at Present in Shoreditch). 7. To top it all of....FREE WI-FI. I ALWAYS appreciate free wi-fi. Thanks Lowry & Baker. I am very much appreciative of your existence.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, fresh food with beautiful presentation! Big portions, great service. We joked that we could fly to London again just for this breakfast!

Yelp
Must have breakfast/brunch! Probably some of the best avocado toast I've ever had! Super cute little cafe feels like your at your aunts house. Definitely worth coming to!

Yelp
A bit pricey but you should bear in your mind that its superb location!!!! everything could be too perfect apart from price. sweets, savoury, whatever you grab for drinks (even if they use Monmouth coffee, its going to be under your expectation, sorry for being honest.) with choice of dairy type you fancy- milk, soy, almond just name it. the atmosphere is fantastic but small enough to be busy at all times ;) been here with my friend for brunching and coffeeing, paid £22 for two brunch plates and 2 coffees.

Yelp
Uuuummm, it's just ok. Off the beaten path up Portobello a little ways, this hole-in-the-wall is so small, that breakfast is served from a hot plate behind the counter, because there is no space for a kitchen downstairs or in the back. We went early (read: before 10:00) one crisp, autumn, Saturday morning and found there to be a wait inside--there are only a handful of tables. We opted to take a seat outside next to a very hungover threesome of twenty-somethings. We waited ages for coffee that was lukewarm by the time it arrived. My husband's espresso was burnt. With two women working, the service was extremely slow. You must order at the counter, and make sure you have cash, because they don't take cards. We both had the eggs benedict, although it's called something different. Theirs is made with an avocado hollandaise, that gives the dish a jaunty hit of color. Considering the setup, the food was done pretty well. However, it, too was a tad cold by the time it came to us. Because of it's locale, it's not as pricey as many of the other morning places in Notting Hill, which is a big plus. However, I'd have to say I'm not likely to go out of my way to come back when I could pay a little more and walk a little less. Yep, I'm a lazy American like that.

Yelp
A very small little place but brunch was sooo good! Worth the trek from Buckingham Palace area. Weekends it is crazy busy, go during week if you can.

Yelp
I've been to Lowry&Baker a few years ago, had terrible experience. It felt dirty everywhere, and dirty cutlery, rude service, so me and my friends never returned. However we've learnt that the owner had changed, we were not too sure if we should give it a try. We came on a Saturday around 1pm, they were fully packed. We've been informed by a very friendly waitress that our table should be ready within 10 to 15 minutes.Immediately I could feel the cafe is much cleaner, the staffs seem to be very happy not grumpy how before, the most importantly that they welcome each customer soon they walk in, that definitely not happened with previous owner. Soon we sat down, the waitress took our drink order, the coffee tasted amazing, and the cups and sauces are so adorable, beautiful. Me and my friend both had their brunch, I must say that it was the best brunch I had in this area, very good portion for the price too. The cakes were so delicious as well, we had the carrot cake and the banana bread, finished off with more coffees. Totally different experience comparing with my last visit. Well done guys! Well, I don't understand why people complaining about this place, if you want to have drinks only and looking to relax on a very busy Saturday, then go to Starbucks or Costa where they have much bigger space to accommodate you.

Yelp
I don't normally write reviews but can't refrain on this occasion. I walked into the cafe today and to say it was busy is an exaggeration-a few people outside and two guests inside. There was one barista making coffee, and two other female staff talking. I stood there for about 10 minutes without anybody acknowledging there was a customer-neither the two women talking not the male barista. I would've happily waited had they told me they'd be right with me but leaving somebody stand there for even 5 minutes is quite rude. I have worked in a coffee shop before and this would've never been allowed to happen. Needless to say I left - I can spend my money elsewhere where staff actually care about their guests. And there is no chance in hell I'll ever be back...

Yelp
Quiet and yummy! The perfect place for a quick coffee with a couple friends!

Yelp
One of the most charming and friendly cafes I've had the pleasure of visiting. If I'm ever on Portobello Road I make a point of stopping here. The coffee is truly divine, they cater for the fanatics. It's a Monmouth blend and I've not had better this side of London. It's beautifully done out, too. Whoever's behind it must be a real talent. The bathroom is a sight to behold. But most of all you come you here for the food. Homemade egg mayonnaise! Bacon and avocado sandwiches! And they always seem to be bringing out delightful little cakes.
