The 25 Best Restaurants in Albuquerque, New Mexico | Eater

"A couple of blocks east of Nob Hill, Loyola’s Family Restaurant is a New Mexican-style diner housed in a midcentury modern building. Since 1990, the kitchen has been dishing up huevos rancheros smothered in chile, hefty chicken fried steaks with mashed potatoes and gravy, and everything in between. Like any well-oiled machine, Loyola’s keeps the plates of comfort food consistent, hot, and quick. Must-try dish: Loyola’s was a filming location in Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, but it’s arguably more famous for Tuesday breakfast special: Spam-and-egg breakfast with your choice of chile." - Justin De La Rosa

Foods okay but not the best you can get in New Mexico. It’s a 4/10 honestly. Coffee is horrible and so are the warm cream packs . the staff is nice but I’m sure they do not eat there. Then watch the register they will blindly charge you $50 more then required. Seems like they are taking advantage.

Google
Really good pancake breakfast, fast and friendly service. Good coffee, excellent pancakes, warm syrup and crispy bacon. It was cool to visit an iconic Breaking Bad film location. Surprisingly, there was no reference to this in the restaurant. Recommended.

This was my first time at this place, seen it so many times in the series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. The food was great and had so much flavor. The service was superb, our waitress explained the menu and checked on us just enough but not over bearing. The atmosphere was good with so many locals there. Definitely going back!!!

Google
The food was wonderful! Service was amazing!! And the atmosphere was very pretty. If I wasn’t from out of town I would definitely be returning! Who knew that a tamale with your breakfast was so good. Thank you!!!

Nick Barbieri

Google
A proper breakfast diner. I’m seriously thinking of extending my trip to Albuquerque to get one more breakfast here. 10/10 no notes, if you’re hungry you will enjoy

Wow...I have not eaten here and boy have I missed out. The green chile here is some of the best I have ever eaten. I live my chile to have some heat and there's certainly did. I even purchased some to take home! Their smothered breakfast burrito was so good. We also tried the carne adovada which also had a really good spice to it and heat from the chile. We like it so much we decided to go in a Sunday the next weekend and only got there to realize they were closed. Oh, what a disappointment we felt but either way we are looking forward to going back. The service was awesome! Our waiter was attentive with a great attitude and personality. Service was spot on! I definitely recommend this place, especially if you love chile. UPDATE: We went back and I ordered the chicharrones HOWEVER...they are not chicharrones, they are carnitas. I asked our server if I was given the wrong order since both carnitas and chicharrones are on the menu and was told no, they're actually one in the same. This was a drag because.authentically they are very different. Chicharrones are crunchier, where carnitas have more meat and are softer. Just an FYI, be aware of what you will get when ordering. Food and setvice is still amazing though. If you read my review, please hit the like button. Thank you

Google
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED! The waiter and hostess was very rude and unaccomadating. The food was greasy, cold and gross. The manager, she was rude, yelled at me and is bad at management. I HIGHLY recommend NOT giving them your service, especially if you want good food and good customer service! This restaurant used to be a great place to eat, but no more. The total for two people was $36 which was unbelievably expensive!

Google
The food was AMAZING! Everyone there, including the other customers said hi and were very kind. Service was impeccable.

Yelp
Our Saturday breakfast spot! I always order the same thing, ham and cheese omelet with hashbrowns, tortilla, and peach or raspberry iced tea. I just love it so much that I can't get off of this choice! My friends always get the huevos rancheros or the carne adovada, we are just creatures of habit! This place is just a traditional diner and busy all morning long! Service is super-fast and friendly!

Yelp
While driving through New Mexico on our Route 66 trip we read in our guide book that Loyola's Family Restaurant was a great place to eat, so we gave it a try and were glad we did. When we walked in we were immediately greeted and seated. I ordered Super Breakfast Burrito and my wife ordered the Mexican Breakfast both came with red and green sauce. We also ordered 4 Sopapillas. Everything was great and we also had a great waiter. The place was immaculately clean even the bathrooms. One other bonus this restaurant was used in several films and the series Breaking Bad. There were several photos on the wall of actors who had been inside the building filming. This was a great place to visit. We will definitely be back.

Barb V.

Yelp
This old standard restaurant has the best red chile! I love the red chile chicharron burrito. The wait staff is always very pleasant and efficient.

Debbie T.

Yelp
Great food and waitress are very quick and nice. Once you seat down they right away acknowledge you and assist. I will definitely keep going back great place to eat no regrets.

Yelp
It's another Breaking Bad/ Better Call Saul location. We came on a Wednesday at 8:30 am, plenty of parking and we had the pick of the place if we wanted to sit in the "Better Call Saul" booth. The restaurant is known for their pozole (according to an article posted on the cashier booth) yet everyone seems to get the breakfast burrito, Christmas style. As much as I was craving pozole, I went with the breakfast burrito, bacon, Christmas style. Stephen went with the same but with chorizo. The waitress said the green chili can be a bit spicy, and she was right. It doesn't hit you until you're chewing, and then you feel the heat. I mixed the green and red to cool it down. It's still delicious, but I swear my tastebuds are still tingling. The burrito filled me up until dinner... no lunch for me.

Yelp
A local Albuquerque institution that's an amazing modest diner. I've been here a few times and it's always been good. The staff is friendly and quick. The appearance of the place is a modest diner. Definitely check this place out if you're looking for New Mexican food, affordable prices, and a piece of Albuquerque history.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is home made diner food with New Mexican flavor. They are open for breakfast and lunch. Staff is friendly and quick with service since as the building does not have many tables each server can spend time with the customer. If you want an authentic New Mexican breakfast try Loyolas.
google avatar

Kimberly W.

Yelp
Service was fantastic, and the food was quick to come out even though they were busy. We shared the super burrito with red chili. The red chili is one of the best in Albuquerque!
google avatar

Marty S.

Yelp
We haven't been here in a while. We both had huevos Rancheros with green chile (one on the side). They are so fast at getting your food out hot and fresh. Quality is so consistent. Staff is always friendly. Love feeling at home with home cooked food. If you haven't tried this local gem, it's a must!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
We had a great breakfast here with the family last week. The food was great and came out quickly. The service was friendly and great. And if you're a Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul fan, it's fun to get to see one of the places they did production at for the shows. We had a cozy booth and loved the old school diner feel. Definitely go check it out!

Yelp
So, you have to go to Loyola's when visitors come in to Albuquerque... ya know, cuz of Breaking Bad. Anyway, good food, reasonable prices, big portions and nice service. Breakfast Burrito with red and green sauces (Christmas style) seems to be a favorite.

Yelp
This local diner is a goldmine of flavor and green and red chili delight. I wanted a green chili omelet n with sausage and a cup of pozole. The waitress said almost anything was already on the menu. She was right. It was called the cactus omelet. The breakfast plate came with toast and potatoes and was more food than most people will be able to eat. But I must say get a cup of the pozole with green or red chili's or both. It was exactly what I wanted on a cold day on February. Great for breakfast and Brunch the are open only til 2pm weekdays see photos for hours. The staff here are on top of it. Thanks for an amazing brunch in Albuquerque. If you want to feel like your at home or at friends house try a meal at Loyola's.
google avatar

Yelp
Expensive! A beef burrito a-la-cart = $15.99 that's it, no beans, no rice, no egg, nothing... just a burrito with beef and green chili.
google avatar

Deb E.

Yelp
Great locals spot on ROUTE 66. Old school feel with lots of variety on the menu. I got Loyola's Special - 3 egg omelette filled with seasoned ground beef. The beef was delicious. I'm also a big fan of hot, hot coffee and lots of refills. The server did a great job. Next time, I'll try the Mexican omelet or Sarah's special. I'm might look around a little more too. Apparently, this restaurant was used several times as a filming location for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

Yelp
Don't think I have been at Loyola's in thirty years. It was delicious. Mini hievos rancheros was perfect. Egg done the way I like it. Their potatoes are homemade & to die for. Green chili and red chili authentic. Burrito was good. Spinach omlet terrific as well. Plenty to choose from on the menu. Clean as well. Our server was attentive and thorough. Kept the coffee coming without us asking. It was a pleasure. Will go have breakfast there again.

Yelp
Ate here twice! We were in town for the ballon festival and stayed nearby. Loved the food, service and value. We had the cinnamon roll, which was so delicious! We also had basic eggs and an omelette but smothered in a very tasty green chili. We had a different server each day and both were friendly and efficient. Definitely coming back if in the area. (Note, they are closed on Sundays & Monday's)
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my goodness what a fine breakfast we enjoyed! The kindest staff, a large and cozy open space, and fantastic menu. I still lament passing on a fat slice of the lush chocolate cake!
google avatar

Yelp
Uber clean, quick full staff. VERY NM menu. Closes after lunch ( a NM tradition). Delicious food. Stuffed sopaipillas!

Yelp
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOYOLAS. i came for breaking bad/better call Saul, but i stayed for the food. Me and my boyfriend come to this place every time we get a chance The chorizo is actually so freaking good. And that's saying something because no one in abq knows how to make chorizo. Literally anything you order will be good. I personally recommend The Usual or the Steak and Eggs but man. you're set with anything. the peach tea is sooooo fresh , no artificial stuff. you'll be happy here !
google avatar

Seo C.

Yelp
Man oh man, I just adore Loyola's!! Delicious food, attentive service, an authentic diner ambiance...consistently great. After seeing it on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, I made sure to visit this place on my travel to ABQ. Such a great choice, it was better than I expected. The first time I went was during the pride parade. It wasn't as busy as I had expected and the service was great. Angela consistently refilled my iced tea and made sure I was attended to. I got the chimichanga plate, which was delicious! The two sopapillas were freshly made, warm, and just the right amount of thickness. I ordered the chimichanga christmas style, and found the red to be a little too spicy personally (my spice tolerance is medium) but both chiles had great flavor. The second time I got Sarah's Special and coffee. Again, both were great. Really love their green chile. That being said, Loyola's isn't necessarily cheap for ABQ but is definitely worth the price. Can't wait for the next time I dine here!!

Yelp
Our # 1 stop! We have been dining at Layola's for decades. The food is consistently good, service is very good and kind people. Every dish made with love!!
google avatar

Roberto B.

Yelp
Decided to check this place out for breakfast while looking for the breaking bad restaurants. It was super crowded, which is always a good sign! The staff was friendly and served me quickly despite the rush. I got a mini Huevos rancheros! It was my first time having that meal, and it was delicious! The red sauce was the perfect mild, and the home fries were amazing. Definitely going here often when I move here.

Paul O.

Yelp
The service was excellent and the food was very good, I had the Menudo it was a little spicy but it had a lot of flavor. My wife had the French toast and my daughter had an omelette like usual but food was great and the speed of the food to come out of the kitchen was great.

Yelp
Loyola's is a beloved neighborhood diner located in a part of East Nob Hill that feels preserved in time. Private lot with many spots, and abundant street parking as well. They open at 5:00 AM, so early birds are welcome. On my first visit, I had the carne adovada and eggs. The carne was soft and flavorful; the eggs, over medium, like I requested. Beans and potatoes filled the plate, and I ate every bite. Absolutely delicious. Today I returned with my girlfriend for brunch. We shared a couple of plates, both of which were good, though not at the same pinnacle as my first encounter. The breakfast burrito seemed a bit haphazard, with the eggs at one end and potatoes at the other. Like much of the menu, it's also a couple bucks more expensive than it should be. The Loyola's special omelette was big, but greasy. The potatoes were oily, as was the ground beef inside the omelette. And yet, the chile is so good here, I can't get upset. They offer it in bulk as well, perfect for family events, birthday parties, etc. The service is also fast and attentive here. I'll definitely be back.

Deke W.

Yelp
The hostess was very rude and disrespectful. We understood the place was full and we would need to wait a minute to have a table for seven. The hostess/cashier then came up and told us that we would have to be split up across from each other. As we waited for the rest of our party to show up so that we could decide how we would split up, we were told we had to sit down at the tables or they would give them away or we could just leave. So, that's exactly what we did. We highly recommend Los Cuates!
google avatar

Mantis T.

Yelp
Great diner experience in Albuquerque! I'm from out of town and Fran made me feel like I was home. Great ambiance and staff - it's nice to see the regulars chatting it up with the waitresses. I couldn't recommend this place any more!
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
This place was AMAZING. We had a short wait which is always a good sign. As a vegetarian, I was warned that the Chiles both had meat from our lovely server who pointed us both in the right direction on what to get. Great food, awesome service, nut allergy safe!
google avatar

Jaime C.

Yelp
Loyola's is a classic 'round here. Back in the late 80s early 90s we knew it as Loyola's Cactus Flower, and the stuffed sopapillas were a staple for me. The breakfast give me all the down to earth diner feels, and the chile was fantastic this morning!! (the waitress gave us multiple warnings about how hot the green was, and it truly was, but oh so flavorful). Their papas hit the spot, just like my mother in law makes them. The service was prompt, and we had a blast chatting about iconic scenes from Breaking Bad and Better Saul Call where this location was used to film. I'm really happy to see this place thriving.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
If anyone's coughing coming out of here it's because the Chile is hot. Today on the recommendation of Angela, I ordered the Mexican pizza, "Christmas" - red and green Chile - with pinto beans. It was delicious, the sopapilla was warm and fluffy, just a nice texture. I had a great time. I know it's changed since the last time I dined in. I did bring a mask with me but eventually took it off to eat. They are cleaning all menus, seating and tabletops between customers. The place was already clean well before covid, and now the staff merely hold the same high standards as before.
google avatar

EC N.

Yelp
Any Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul fan, needs to visit this place. The place is old school and the food is great. Good spice. Service was lovely. Why only 3 stars? The woman who works as host and cashier is a hot mess. Shouldn't have to wait 7 minutes in the middle of the dinning room with servers and customers bumping past, to pay my check. This system needs to be updated. She needs to be trained to say, "Please, Thank you, and You're welcome" I don't care how busy you are, you are in the hospitably business. Show it.
google avatar

Rick P.

Yelp
Great diner in Albuquerque, nice history with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. The wait staff are great and so is the food!
google avatar

Renate S.

Yelp
Absolutely delish! Everything on the menu! Had cheese enchiladas this time! OMG so good
google avatar

Pat S.

Yelp
My wife and I recently tried loyolas Restaurant we found the food to be excellent the service outstanding. Our our waitress Joy did a great job educating us on the history of the place and the menu. Checked on us often made us feel like one of the regulars. Which the place was full of. Thank you Joy for a wonderful experience will be back. Pat and Reba

Sarah T.

Yelp
I would never go back to this place. The owner is very angry, and mean! She will not tolerate any complaint and will tell you to leave. Very unprofessional. She needs to retire. She is old and mean!
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
I can eat almost anything repeatedly over and over again. I know the most of us usually like to spread things out a bit, yes, I admit, that's the norm. I would have no problem eating New Mexican back to back, hell even three days in a row would appease me! I was brought along for yet another lunch outing with some of the work fam. Someone had already made the choice for Loyola's since last week. Some of you may or may not know, and may or may not care either, but Loyola's was used to film a scene for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as well. You can tell they have been around for a while and they have their loyal patrons, regardless of the shows. The place was jam packed upon our arrival, luckily we were able to seize a table for six! Yay! They weren't kidding when they said this is a favorite place of the locals. After eating there I can see why too! We had to wait a few minutes for the last two of our party to arrive so we scanned the menu. It was filled with plenty of delicious things. Including my favorite, SPAM! As enticing as that was, I still struggled with making a decision. The omelettes were actually intriguing me too, I almost even give them any consideration. Once I saw the pigs in a blanket, it was over. That is what I ordered. We also got a side of SPAM! Boy was I excited! Our food was out in no time flat. Now sometimes that can be a bit worrisome. Is it fresh? Was it made poorly? Not to worry, everything was fresh and tasty too! Three orders of Huevos Rancheros made it to our table along with a sopapilla burger and a relleno plate. They food was great! All of us members of the clean plate club. The red chile was tasty too. (I got a side for my pigs n a blanket, who needs syrup!) I like the way they used the breakfast sausage instead if the sausage links too. If you're looking for a good place for breakfast, come to Loyola's. I'll give you my review on the taco's and burritos next time. Don't forget the sopas. They're perfect and airy like they should be! Yarm!

ChrisnFelicia T.

Yelp
Amazing Food, Amazing Service, and Amazing Chili!!! Glad that you are back and we will be back soon.
google avatar

Kiley Q.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant recently because I was craving a giant cinnamon roll. They have a special of $4.99 for coffee and cinnamon roll. Being from the Midwest, I couldn't pass that up. The cinnamon roll was airy and dripping with frosting. It was delicious! The service was quick, and it hit the spot. Most people come here for the New Mexican cuisine, however. There seems to be a lot of regulars. The stranger next to me looked to be eating some authentic menudo soup for breakfast. I should also mention that this venue has been made famous on the TV show Better Call Saul. So there's that reason to visit, too. Overall I think this place has pretty goo food with decent prices (except that a single egg costs $2.50!!) and I will continue to stop by now and then.
google avatar

Judy B.

Yelp
Huge disappointment for our first stop in ABQ for breakfast. I was expecting some awesome food for a 4 star establishment but what we got was some pretty sad buiscuits and gravy and ham cheese omelette. My buiscuits were mostly crumbled up in this vat of bland gravy. And the buiscuits that were kinda whole still were dry and gritty almost. The only good part about the plate were the chunks of meat in it. My husbands ham cheese omelette was the oddest version of omelette we've ever seen. It came out looking like a pancake and the ham was basically underneath. Was this the first time they ever made an omelette?? It was his bday weekend and he wanted a nice breakfast diner setting which it was. Great friendly staff and booth tables. But food needs much improvement for breakfast. We both ordered coffee which apparently was 3$ each. So our bill came up to about 25$. What a rip off.
google avatar

Rye B.

Yelp
Finally stopped by, it is excellent. Very crowded and busy as you would expect on a Saturday afternoon, but well worth it l, even if you don't like Jimmy and the boys.
google avatar

Connie B.

Yelp
I had breakfast here with my son this past weekend. The staff was very friendly and courteous. We both had ham and eggs. It was very good and the coffee was great as well. We were both very impressed with how fast it took to get our order. They also came by several times to see if we needed more coffee. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Carrie B.

Yelp
Fabulous diner and delicious food! Ate here because if you're a fan of Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad you know it is Mike's place. (We also sat in what might have been his booth). Our waitress was super friendly and helpful. Love the diner vibe and the authentic diner experience. Bonus if you're a fan of Saul or Breaking Bad.
google avatar

Art M.

Yelp
New Mexico pizza with green chilie is awesome! We get them for the whole shop every couple weeks. SO GOOD!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
This is another restaurant we've been wanting to try for a while now. I'm glad we finally did so we can add it to our rotation! We went on Sunday around 1:00 pm. It was pretty busy, but there were some open tables. Parking was convenient. They offer daily rotating specials, and the menu options made it difficult to decide: it all looked so good! This was probably the best service I've experienced in my three years in Albuquerque, Loyola's ain't messing around! And our food came out super fresh about five minutes after placing our order! They also offer a stamp card: get a stamp for every meal purchased and the 11th meal is free. Zero complaints from us: we'll definitely be back to try the lunch menu soon!
google avatar

Julian G.

Yelp
I'll be honest. The only thing that drew me to this place was the fact that it was frequently featured in breaking bad as Mike's favorite place to eat. It was really cool checking out the restaurant and reliving the scenes in my head. They have a lot of autographed memorabilia hung on the walls. The food was decent. I mean it wasn't the best that I've had, but it wasn't the worst either. I had a breakfast burrito with christmas. It was pretty large and filling. However, it was a bit "greasy spoon-ish" sloppy. I got coaxed into trying the pie by my recollection from the TV show of the pie being good. I had a slice of coconut cream pie and it was actually really good. The service here was awesome. They were quick to attend to me and constantly checked up on me. I give this place 3 stars for the food, but the service and appeal for breaking bad fans bumps it up a notch. Definitely recommend this place for those BB fans out there.

Esteban L.

Yelp
Good food, however the Cashier was critiquing my wife's clothing and nails. Kind of unprofessional and embarrassing on her part.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
I have only been here two times and can't get myself to order something else! The huevos rancheros is so good and so comforting. Honestly, if food can hug you, hold you, and wrap a blanket around you on a cold day, huevos rancheros would be that hero. The green and red sauce are pretty spicy. If I could rate their spiciness on a scale of 1-10, it would be 7.5 The coffee is so good too! Slightly roasty and not too bitter. I'm told by staff that they get a lot of compliments on the coffee. I love this local gem. I will be back and will TRY to order something else

Jeff J.

Yelp
With travel restrictions lifted in New Mexico, I made my way out to ABQ for one of my semi-annual visits. Service is always top notch, and always friendly. Says a lot when I see the same staff on every visit. Went for the Cheese Enchilada Plate this time, topped with Red. Their Green is also excellent, but I usually wanted Red this time. Outstanding flavor, as always, on both visits. Also love the Sopaipillas that accompany the plate. Always a favorite in ABQ

Dave D.

Yelp
Went there quite a while back with a coupon that said invalid for steak (diners) Specifically asked the waitress if it we could use it for breakfast steak and eggs. She said yes we could. Went to pay and was told it was no good. Told them what the waitress said and waitress even agreed yet they refused to honor it. Haven't been back since. Like Sam Walton supposedly said if you lose 1 customer you don't lose just today's sale you lose all their future sales.

Jay V.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! Great food served in a cozy atmosphere by excellent and attentive staff makes every visit a treasure. The main cuisine is well prepared Mexican (Northern New Mexican) food with a wonderful homemade nostalgic flavor. Their Carne Adovada is superb, the chili is bright and flavorful, breakfast burritos spiced just right and enchiladas rival my own dear sainted mother's. The staff are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. I'm always more than happy with the service. The prices are well worth what you get. If you really love Mexican food then don't miss this place.
