Get Cozy with the Best Comfort Food Takeout in Houston | Eater Houston

"It’s the end of an era, but first… one last Luann Platter to-go. The nostalgic Texas-based cafeteria chain will remain open through the year and into 2021, so there is plenty of time to indulge in favorites like Luby’s fried fish, French grilled liver and onions, mushroom turkey chopped steak with signature vegetables and famed desserts like chocolate icebox pie. Find Luby’s on Favor, or visit lubys.com to order online." - Megha McSwain

I work in the Medical Center i stopped by to get a plate of food told the lady i wanted a luann plate got to the register and the lady charged me for a regular plate. One lady that was working had no idea of what she was doing. I asked her questions and she Kept having to get Info from other people. I got to work and my food is inedible i threw it away. Chewing on the chicken was like chewing on rubber, okra was stale and greasy. I took a picture of the receipt and the food called to get a resolution on the issue and person on the phone told me there was nothing that could do for me. I would never spend another dime at this location. Customer service is horrible.

Service was horrible. Walked 5 minutes home and food is ice cold. Never again. Lubys should have closed and not Fuddruckers

Google
I was staying close to the medical center and this restaurant was close to my hotel. The servers were friendly and the restaurant was clean. The food tasted very good and the portions were generous. While I was eating, a server checked with me several times to see if I needed anything. All in all, a very good experience.

Google
Your food is fabulous, and very good service, I love your desserts🥰

Google
Clean. Friendly staff. Super fast. Don't Come here if you have an open warrant. Always has police eatting here. Good looking cafeteria serving line. High quality cafeteria style line up, Just a short notch below regular restaurant quality due to heat lamps ,etc. But if you want a sit down meal quickly in a clean , cool, dinning room you can't beat it.

Ms. K Doe

Google
I'll start with kuddos for the server being nice. The bad: there was a long strand of hair in my container. The chicken fried chicken was so tough I couldn't even cut it with my knife, let alone, chew it. On the way out, another patron had her dog in the eating area, sitting in a dog bed, feeding it from her fork. It had no service vest on, so I am assuming it wasn't a service animal. I just felt it was inappropriate.

Google
Sergio is awesome at taking care of his customers The baked chicken, dressing w/ brown gravy, loaded potatoes and Mac and cheese was a great meal. Bearly over $10 dollars.

Google
It's Luby's! I typically visit at lunch and the parking is almost always full, but people are coming and going so there always seems to be a space. Cafereria-style line and the serving personnel are friendly and efficient. Table attendants are always helpful and attentive.

Yelp
Luby's is comfort. That's all that needs to be said but let me elaborate. Luby's has been a family favorite. We used to eat at a Luby's almost every Sunday after church. We would always run into other family or friends and enjoy a meal together. Then there was the announcement that all Luby's were going to be shut down and they did shut down a few locations including the one in Pearland where I live. Luckily, they were saved and there are still locations to be found in and around Houston and surrounding cities. I met my family here on a random Sunday and it still felt like back in the day. Most of the clientele are the older generation, dressed in their Sunday best. Very chill. Expect a line at peak lunch time. All the staff are also mostly old school and give excellent customer service. Luby's is cafeteria style which means, you get in line and work your way down the line starting with salads and work your way down to desserts. They have a wide variety of thing in each category. You got your regular salads, but then you got stuff like ambrosia salad, carrots and raisins, jello, etc. For mains, they got a little bit of everything as well. You got all the proteins in different styles. My go to almost everytime is the chicken fried steak. It's a generous portion and seasoned just right. I like mine with gravy on the side. My back up is their famous fried square fish. I'm not a huge fish guy, but this is always a tasty choice. I can never make up my mind with the sides and just get a bunch. I love their fried okra, broccoli rice casserole, and their famous mac and cheese. They also have quite a few bread choices. All of which is good. Dessert choices are usually different each time depending on our moods and is usually shared. I personally like to get some of their fruit salad from their salad options and finish my meal off somewhat healthy. That doesn't mean I don't atleast have a bite or two of the sweets. Overall, still a classic and still a favorite of my families. I'll be back!

Yelp
Since i was kid :) Ive been eating at Lubys Their food is always on point. Almost like a McDonald's system with their flavor. It never changed and has always been consistent. I enjoy that alot. Never Change!!!!! If for some reason i had to have The 2 fried fish with Mac and Mashed Potatoes with a Roll as my last meal i wouldn't be sad at all. 10/10 It's always hot and fresh. Crispy too. Smells like childhood. Fast service. I love the cafeteria style cuisine and system (take a tray and move down the line) I took my Girlfriend here! To Lubys for the first time! And she LOVED it! :) shes a very picku Girl too! We were both happy campers that day and we owe it to you Lubys ! Please keep the staff happy and working in a healthy environment. Keep it heated in there! It was pretty cold in there. They are incredible with their service and they pay attention to your orders. 10/10 Thank you So Much Lubys for the hospitality. We WILL BE BACK -Santangelo Balli Gonzales

Yelp
Been coming here whenever I visit htx, but I was a little confused about the sides situation. Our server was very friendly and accommodative. I am following a keto diet so I got the roast chicken, with collard greens , pickled beets and cucumber salad but I feel they had sugar in it so had to skip eating it. In general taste has been consistent, good bang for your buck. My fav item generally is the chicken fried steak w/ gravy (not in picture) sadly couldn't eat any because of my diet, but my family did enjoy theirs.

Yelp
I look forward to Luby's Thanksgiving food every year. While cooking is great, I enjoy the tasty variety they have to offer that are ready to go. The interior is neat and clean, with plenty of trays available. While the lines can be long, I feel that they've gotten a lot more organized in the last few years, having several staff members helping to move the line along. Regarding the food, it's both visually appealing and oh so tasty. I love the turkey, Mac and cheese, ham, mashed potatoes, cornbread and rolls and stuffing (yum!) to name just a few of the dishes. Their food really has that home-cooked feel that helps make Thanksgiving special.

Yelp
Normally, I would typically rate this Luby's location a 4, but the past few times I've visited this location, the vegetable sides have been so hit or miss. During the latest visit, the veggies were just subpar. The green beans were so bland, as if poured from a can and placed on the steam table. The yams were laughable - not cooked evenly, no discernible flavor and even a slime factor which didn't make sense. In the past I have also received broccoli with cheese sauce and the broccoli was tougher than al dente - as if it had been simply washed and placed on the steam table without even being cooked. Everyone knows Luby's usually has a great vegetable selection, so it is perplexing to experience this kind of mediocrity. Surprisingly, though, the Bacon Cheese Steak was delicious. Service is always great here, so that's a plus.

Yelp
I went in and out in about 35 minutes. Service was good. The food was great liver, onions, mashed potatoes and corn. Excellent service with a water. 10.27

Yelp
Please note that Luby's did reply to me and asked me to contact them presumably to discuss my comments. Despite me giving them my email address FOUR times, they have yet to reach out to me. That is a pretty shoddy response from a well known restaurant chain. What are they frightened of?

Kim C.

Yelp
The lemon ice box pie was very good, but the rest of my meal was just ok. The chicken fingers, while very large, were dry, and the macaroni and cheese wasn't as good as the frozen ones I've purchased. My biggest complaint would be that I was told I had to purchase two vegetables. I really only wanted one. That requirement, more than the food, will probably not make me want to return. The servers were very helpful and were always checking to see if you needed anything. The restaurant was very crowded, so people must like it.

Yelp
For months, my boyfriend had been raving about Luby's. Seriously, it felt like he couldn't stop talking about it. We've been together for a year now, and for most of that time, I've just rolled my eyes and dismissed the idea of going there. The very thought of Luby's didn't appeal to me--it sounded outdated, unexciting, and, honestly, I hadn't been there in ages. But one late morning, it was his turn to choose where we'd eat. Of course, he picked Luby's. I decided to let go of my skepticism, accept his choice, and just go with the flow. I wanted him to be happy, so I told myself I'd try to keep an open mind. Oh. My. God. I was so wrong about Luby's. The moment we walked in, I was hit with a wave of happiness I wasn't expecting. The food options were endless, and let me tell you--coming from someone who's a pescatarian with a pretty restricted diet--I had plenty to choose from! Everything looked delicious and fresh, and I ended up being genuinely excited to eat there. The service was fantastic, too. Everyone working there seemed happy to be there, which is such a rare and refreshing vibe. And the ambiance? Surprisingly perfect. The warm lighting paired with the colorful food displays instantly lifted my mood. When we sat down, I thought the dining area felt a little too dim, but by the end of our meal, it all clicked--it was cozy and inviting, tying the whole experience together. Long story short: I'm so glad I gave Luby's a chance. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was lovely, and now I completely understand why
google avatar

Rita S.

Yelp
Food was fresh and as always very Luby-delicious! My whole family, who was a party of 14, ate everything off their plate! The dining area was very clean and spacious! Every employee was pleasant, helpful and attentive.

Yelp
Anyone can understand that technology fails and you have to accommodate when it does. However, this Luby's decided NOT to communicate during the peak time of the lunch hour that they could only take cash instead of debit or credit cards. It was not until I had waited 15 minutes plus in line with my food that I overhear crew members saying to the customer in front of me that they could only take cash. Why not post this information on the door? Because you know people will not come in. Instead, you would rather waste food and people's time trying to hustle dollars into your store.. Unfortunately, I did not have the physical money on hand to pay for my meal and was going to use my debit card. So when I informed them of this situation, I ended up throwing my hands up in the air and walking out Luby's, leaving the tray at the register. Dramatic? Yes, because I wasted time trying to get a bite to eat before I headed to the Medical Center for a doctor's appointment. I was already going to rush to eat my food just waiting in the line. I just thought the cashier was new, so I was just going to be patient and take my food to go and finish it at the med center until I was called into my appointment. To find out the line was backed as people were scrounging for cash to pay for their meal because no one told them UNTIL they got to the regsiter that they only were taking cash is just unacceptable and greedy. Do better, Lubys!

Yelp
Went earlier this month to the OST location, and there were quite a few strands on hair fried within the batter of my fish. Went to the S Post Oak location today, and EVERYTHING on my plate was cold. The waiter said it's been happening for a month so far, and management is aware, but nothing's been done. He mentioned he's had 40-50 plates sent back for the same thing. Since it's been issues at 2 locations, and nothing's being done, I conclude that Luby's doesn't care about their customers nor their quality. Kind of makes me think they're self-sabotaging, especially since so many locations are closing.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
I love Luby's because they have lots of veggie options, delicious cake slices and wonderful iced tea. But a waitress took forever to clean a booth table. She saw me waiting to sit on a booth and took her time to come clean a table. She was handing out boxes to go to several customers. Another waitress said it wasn't her table. As far as the vegetable soup, it's got lots of veggies. But the broth lacks flavor. The Oreo cheesecake is delicious and rich. It will take me three or four days to eat it. I love the tanginess of the cheese filling. I wish they would have the seafood patty more often and they'd bring back the $6.99 special.

Yelp
Luby's is for lovers! What better way to spend Valentines Day than with a loved one (or group of loved ones) at Luby's. My fondness of Luby's is part nostalgia, part love of cafeteria dining and comfort foods. And if you're a native Houstonian, you likely feel the same. On this particular Valentine's Day, the service was great, food was fresh, and they had some of the best 80s pop and dance music playing on the speakers. You can't beat that on one of the busiest and overhyped restaurant-dine-out holidays of the year. It breaks my heart that so many locations have closed over the years. So if you are a true fan of this local gem, grab some friends and make a fun night of it at Luby's! :)

Yelp
Luby's is a classic southern cafeteria with quite a wide variety of options and pretty good food. I wouldn't go in expecting too much however. (C).

Yelp
Can you believe this? Eating at Luby's final Friday of January was my first time eating out since the new year. I was also glad to see so many older customers eating out post Covid-19 pandemic. I was very hungry and thirsty after my booster shot at the clinic. That wasn't the symptoms but driving by Luby's made me want to poke in there. Right before entering, I saw my appetite pumped up. Yeah 25% off for veterans and military. Most places only offer 5-10%. Gee. I could really overindulge myself with that discount. I haven't been to any Luby's since working from home early 2020. So I forgot how to order. I remember it's a cafeteria style. To make decision simple, I ordered a combo special with sausage. Uh? Employees were not familiar with the combo or they couldn't hear me with mask on. Either way, I got my discounted meal. The ice tea dispenser was down (not appetizing not a fan of iced tea from a machine), only clear water came out. A nice young man pointed out the other cashier to get ice tea. By the time I walked over, I changed my mind. Ah. It's ok. I'll just drink plain water. It's free anyway. My chopped steak was pretty tender and juicy. Fried okra was still crunchy. The green beans was like GREEN and FRESH. Yeah. Two thumbs up!!! However, the cornbread was dry like a brick. I noticed few tables got yellow sponge after they left the restaurant. Ha! I'll know what to order or not to order next time.
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't been to a cafeteria in a very long time. Staying next to this Lubys I decided I'd give it a whirl. Appeared like any other cafeteria. The salads looked appealing. Many entrees to choose from that looked good. Decided to go for the fried cod vs baked tilapia or the salmon. It was good. I got cabbage as it had just come from the back, and the broccoli. I sat down and the cabbage was cold (how can that be) and the broccoli was dipped in water and put on the plate. It was cold and so raw I could barely stick my fork in it. I'll give the tea 5 stars and the staff busting tables and getting more tea 5 stars. Don't anticipate returning.

Yelp
Luby's on Old Spanish Trail always has good food and the lady (Valencia) in the to go area us pleasant and helpful. I LOVE going to Luby's since I went there w/my parents as a young person. It feels good just sitting down to good old fashioned fare. I like the meat and 2 sides simplicity. The cake slices are awesome too. What makes it good too is the people and the the warmth they bring in their service vs. a kiosk or tablet at the table. Sometimes the old school is still the best school !!! Square fish rules ! Yeast rolls too !
google avatar

Frankie H.

Yelp
It was a very long line inside, so I decided to go through the drive-thru. I was in line for 45 minutes. Once I got to place the order, I asked for macaroni and cheese and was told I had to wait 15 minutes for it, so I changed the side to another choice. Then I asked for an additional side of fried orka. When I got the order, the fried orka was not included, and there was dressing on the plate, and I didn't ask for that. I'm giving 3 stars because my adult daughter said the food was good.
google avatar

Lora C.

Yelp
Consistency. This Luby's always delivers on food and customer service. Miss me with all of these fad, insta food places. Lubys on OST never misses!!! Good, old fashioned food, service and prices.
google avatar

Samantha V.

Yelp
Very dependable restaurant for good sanitary, nutritional food!!! deliciously prepared
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I understand food service "Rush" but don't rush people when it's 2 people in line. A bit rude, but once again I understand food service. It's like all the mean lunch ladies got fired at schools and all worked here. Prices a bit too high for the customer service. And the fact it's more elders that eat here, poor grandparents. Y'all deserve better. First timer, last timer. 2 stars cause it's 1 star from me and coworker
google avatar

Ardara H.

Yelp
The food is hot and tasty. The fried fish was flaky and tender on the inside. The inside was warm and comfortable. The service was adequate but not the friendliest. Nice place to dine for a good meal of choice.
google avatar

Nina G.

Yelp
This location is very nice, but my wheat roll was hard. I ordered salmon & it looked amazing, but sadly it was very dry. I did enjoy the cheesecake. The yams & Mac & cheese were a 10. I love Luby's

Patricia A.

Yelp
The food was horrible. The bake chicken was tough. It wasn't cooked completely, The food had no seasonings . We stopped by because I had a medical procedures after fasting overnight what a waste of my hunger. The best thing about the meal was the desert.
google avatar

Molly R.

Yelp
He was so excited to take me here because it was favorite of years passed. One thing of ten was good, the fish almondine. Literally everything else was cold, dried to jerky or just bad. The chicken fingers couldn't even be chewed. We did tell the clerk but she only offered to replace with more of the same-not interested in more jerky? Left 3/4 of the food in the table and at $17 per person, I expected more. Just a lousy experience and they couldn't have cared less.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
It had been ages since I ate at Luby's. My wife and I decided to treat my youngest daughter to LuAnn special since she had never tasted Luby's. The $8.99 LuAnn plate was a steal. The one protein and two sides were more than enough for a full meal. We ordered two beef liver plates and one chop steak plate. The sides were beans, Spanish rice, fried olka, cabbage and Mac & cheese. We also ordered strawberry shortcake and chocolate cake for desert. The proteins and sides were delicious and not over cooked. However the livers were not deveined. The cakes were just ok. Service was quick and friendly. We will definitely return.

Yelp
Food be cold when you get to the table There is only one waitress and she only Comes out when the guests leave and

Yelp
I LOVE Luby's...normally. This was by far the worst experience at a Luby's I've ever had. The wait staff was friendly. That is the only positive thing I have to say. Their fryer was out so no fried entrees. I was okay with that, but everything was cold and the chicken was so over-baked and dry, I could barely eat it. I would not recommend this Luby's at all.

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Outstanding selection of delicious entrees. I went on Easter and it was worth the wait!

Yelp
took A break from the hospital, because my sister is in labor , to grab a bite to eat I was greeted with RUDE employees yelling at me what do I want , then horrible horrible food would never come here

Yelp
Wonderful to see Luby's is still open on Holcomb great staff current friendly service manager greeted us on the line love the vegetables today got the fried fish and the choice baked potatoes wonderful Great coming here

Yelp
This brought back memories of going to the cafeteria with my parents and grandma back in the eighties. It's a shame that this place seems to be stuck in that time period. We were the only patrons under the age of 75, which, I guess is has it has always been with cafeterias. Luby's had so much potential if they had only remodeled their restaurants and kept up with times because I truly believe people love the cafeteria style restaurant. But alas, it seems that they will soon be gone forever. The food was a pleasant surprise however. Everything looked really tasty and I opted for the chicken fried steak and my girlfriend had the fried fish. The CFS had a great crust, although there was about 20% more crust than meat underneath. The cream gravy was a bit strange and really salty but tasted pretty good with the steak and the loaded mashed potatoes that I had for the side dish. Overall, it wasn't the best, but a pretty solid meal. The girlfriend wasn't too impressed with the fried fish. She told me she used to love it but this interpretation was nothing like that of which she remembered. The crust didn't taste right and the fish didn't taste fresh. It was a fun experience for the old memories but I'm not sure if we will ever go back.

Yelp
I got sick from this lubys on friday so the manager said to come back today and load up a comp lunch ( which i did ) However the manager refused to comp it unless i could prove i was there the day before which i did when the waitress Verified that yes i was but the manager had already abruptly demanded full payment which i quickly paid but after he verified from his staff that i was in fact telling the truth he disappeared in the back of the store and refused to refund me . this location is public health unsafe and the games the store manager played is beyond me , go there at your own risk but be warned .

Celia G.

Yelp
We had good service and good food and the location was close to ower apartments and it was good and one of the coworkers were very nice and her name was Candice she is amazing I really recommend this place for family's we all had so much fun here best place I've been in there is good desert too.

Yelp
Nearly everything on my Favor order was incorrect. One side, the bread, and the drink were wrong. Buyer beware.
google avatar

Robert E.

Yelp
The good at this specific store is hit and miss with quality Always have considerate staff. Go there for this more than the food quality
google avatar

Taj R.

Yelp
Lady at register counted the limones in my Cup/ drink and told me she had to charge me for them. I told her they have never charged me for 3 limons before. She then got an attitude because I questioned that if I would of got a to go cup, would she open my cup to try to count the limons. I just thought it was rude and she was just trying to charge me for extra stuff. There gonna charge us for napkins next.

Yelp
So glad that Luby's business has been acquired and will continue to serve its fans. On our latest visit, Crispy Pork Tenderloin was new to the menu. We recommend trying it, it was crispy and tender, and the gravy enhanced the flavor with some spice (tho it was delicious on its own). There were 3 Fan Favorites available at $6.99 each with 2 sides and bread. I enjoyed the Seafood Patty previously, but have yet to try the Spaghetti. I decided to try the BBQ Baked Potato stuffed with chunks of tender, smoky Brisket and BBQ sauce, and I will definitely get it again. Very satisfying dinner with friendly service.
google avatar

Monique M.

Yelp
This is the worst Luby's location I have ever been to. My food was cold and the hostess asked if I wanted her to microwave it? MICROWAVE IT? Is she serious? I paid for hot food and that's what I expected. They have also stop buying salad vinegar? Why? Needless to say I won't be back to this location.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
Always good food like Granny used to make!!! All Luby's should add a specialty coffee section and modernize the decor to attract more customers. The food is worth coming back for all the time!

Henry N.

Yelp
On Sunday, September 17, 2023, at approximately 3:30 p.m. I visited the Luby's Cafeteria at 1727 Old Spanish Trail in Houston. I have dined at that location several times before, but this time my experience was enough to convince me not to return. The food (chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes) was at room temperature. When I complained, they offered to "heat it up". I refused; food left at room temperature for very long is not safe to eat. Two other customers also told me their food was cold. Eventually, after working through 2 levels of management, I did receive a refund.

Cheryl P.

Yelp
10-25-2022 12:45pm Michael is the best waitress ever. Sir I hope you get a raise You lifted my spirit into the clouds. God bless you brother. I told him what a great waiter he was and he complimented us until we left.I love that place,he waited on us last time! Thank you sir,I'll see you next time.
google avatar

Kristin S.

Yelp
The food was ok. The macaroni and cheese is not like it once was when I was a child. I was disappointed that roast beef wasn't an option so I went with the chicken fried steak. I also had the green beans and a roll. All around the food and the experience was average.

Marvin B.

Yelp
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, the whole experience wasn't great today from the cashier taking the order he wasn't pleasant, he didn't upsell but the young lady at the window was helpful I was able to add a drink, but the real problem was the food the Angus steak was burnt on top and bottom covered with onions then the potatoes looked like they didn't put enough water in the mix when making them it was just a clump of paste , the greens beans were tasteless

Yelp
Ah,Luby's. I'll be sad to see you go but I'll feel the boot out of contention is justified. This Lubys- I've been to twice in two weeks. I used to love the fried fish. That cracker crust!! Mmmm! Last time I went was at 5:30 on a weekday and the fish was so tough!!! Part of it was inedible. I went to one near my home at 2:30- tough fish again And why isn't the tartar sauce as delicious as it used to be? Today I went and I thought I struck gold- steaming hot fish, yummy golden crispy crunchy crust- Mmmmhm!!! Tender white fish- no tough ness but in the fourth bite it seemed a bit fishy. It got worse so I almost spit a few bites out By the end of the fish I was afraid to eat the last piece bec the fishiness was so apparent. I hope I don't get sick later. Yuck! That's like a good looking, well dressed guy or girl walking by and the perfect image is shattered when you're left reeling by their body odor hitting you in the nose as they pass you. It was like that. So i would give this one Last try- at the Galleria Lubys where the elderly rich go to eat.if it's bad there too- I'm done with Lubys!

Dee D.

Yelp
Be sure to tell them to put LIDS on your veggie plate...or it will all be a jumbled mess.

Yelp
I'm from Los Angeles, and we don't have Luby's in California.. PERIOD. When I moved to Houston, and came to my first Luby's, I immediately fell in love. I normally visit the location off of 290 & Spring Cypress. I've never had a bad experience until now. I came here today with a friend because I was dying of hunger, I haven't had anything to eat the entire freaking day. I planned on devouring that cafeteria! I come up to the cafeteria line and NOTHING was fresh! Everything they had to serve was OLD, HARD, and just needed to be thrown out! I ended up picking the Chicken Fried Steak as my entree, and the only reason I picked it was because it was the only thing that looked like it had just came out of the fryer. Anyway, I move down to the side dishes area and ummm, WHERE THE HELL ARE THE VEGGIES?! They were out of cauliflower, and broccoli, even Mac & Cheese. Luby's is known for they freakishly delicious Mac & Cheese, and they did not have any whatsoever for me to eat. OMG. I was pissed. I ended up just taking the CFS alone without any sides because everything else just looked old. I get to the very end where I pay for my meal and the cashier is bent over on the other side writing in her diary or whatever. She glances over at me, and looks back down and continues writing. A good 30 seconds pass by and she asks me if I need help. I'm pretty sure if I'm standing next to your freaking register with a tray full of food I'm gonna need some help. TAKE MY MONEY!!! Or don't. I'm not going to be returning to this Luby's again. Get your stuff together! If I could give this place just half of one star, I WOULD!!
