"Luby’s, the Texas-based cafeteria chain founded in 1947, has reported a staggering $25 million loss in sales for the second quarter of 2020, in part due to to the coronavirus shutdown, according to a story in the Houston Chronicle." - Brittanie Shey

I enjoy eating here. The staff are friendly and the options change. Great option in the area.

Google
Love this type of restaurant it's like a southern cafeteria it is comforting in a world full of predictability. I enjoyed the turkey /dressing,green beans casserole, mash potatoes, gravy, macaroni & cheese & my mom enjoyed the spaghetti & cabbage sides can't wait to return! We are hooked !

Google
The only reason atmospheres is 4 stars is because I’m an introvert. The food was good tonight. I had the liver and onions with gravy and mashed potatoes with zucchini and yellow squash on the side. I ate the whole thing. Now I have the itis. Whoever cooked this liver knew what they were doing. I don’t think I ever had liver this good at Luby’s before.

Sunday eve at 6:20 pm. I realize that this is quite a busy time but the lady at the to go/ drive thru counter was very rude. To me, the gentleman before me and the gentleman after. Being busy doesn't give you the right to snap at people, serve with no smile and no thank yous to any of us. Find someone else who understands the meaning of service.

Visiting from NYC and always good to come back home for the big portions and wide open seating. I love the country fried steak smothered with gravy. This place is very kid friendly and great for large groups. Tucked away in a quiet corner near the highway. Highly recommend if you want some feel good food in a nice quiet environment. 👍🏼

Stopped by Luby’s and ordered their liver and onions—definitely a standout if you’re a fan of comfort food classics. The liver was cooked just right, tender and well-seasoned, with that perfect sear that locks in the flavor. Paired with sweet, caramelized onions, it made for a satisfying, nostalgic meal. The cafeteria-style setup made it easy to grab a few sides, so I added mashed potatoes and green beans, which complemented the liver perfectly. The staff was friendly and kept things moving smoothly, even during the lunch rush. If you’re craving a bit of old-school comfort, Luby’s liver and onions is a must-try!

Went on a Sunday lunch date & the food was hot & fresh, everything was amazing, salads were great. & staff was nice & helpful. We’ll be back!

Yelp
This Luby's has raised the bar. I think they got a new manager or something. The food has improved a lot. Finally the cabbage is getting fully cooked- lol I find myself not eating fast food as much and eating more here. The Luann special is usually 8.49. Compares to a burger combo. If you have not been in awhile, give it a try.

Kathleen L.

Yelp
I hadn't been to Luby's since I was a kid and decided on a whim to give it a try. The service was good and it was fairly quick going through the line even though there were a lot of people ahead of us. I ordered the Luann platter with fried fish, Mac and cheese and green beans. The fish was good and the half portion was enough for me with the sides. Tatar sauce was tasty. The Mac and cheese was really good - I'd come back just for that! You might as well skip the rolls as they were bland and looked better than they tasted. The restaurant itself was very clean and the staff were attentive. Luby's is back on my radar and I look forward to trying different sides and entrees in the future.

Brittany C.

Yelp
I'm not sure who's back there cooking but this is some of the best Luby's I have had in a long time!! It was perfectly seasoned and I only had the veggie plate!! I can only imagine how good their meat portions are!! Whoever is working the afternoon shift, KEEP THEM!!

David Y.

Yelp
I ordered one of my favorite Luby's meals via DoorDash - beef liver and onions with cabbage and green beans for sides. Unlike the Luby's on Tidwell, which was mediocre last time I went, the food from this one - even delivered - was excellent! The food arrived quickly, and it was still warm when I got it. I'd recommend this Luby's any day. Great homestyle southern American food!

Yelp
I first discovered Lubys when I moved to Austin, Texas, a zillion years ago. I liked it right off the bat. Back then, I didn't know the meaning of "Do you want white gravy or brown gravy?" I wasn't cooking back then, and I still don't today, but I soon learned a lot of people like white gravy, and I do now. I have enjoyed all their dishes, and when I need a balanced meal, it's off to Lubys. But I do go in between during those times too. At least once or twice a week when I was living in Austin. As always, I like the way the staff talked to you, asking how your day was, it seems everyone gets along. I like the feeling in the dining room, it reminds me of home during the holiday. Thank you

Tamra G.

Yelp
This is the best Lubys ever. They have the huge pickles like I remember as a kid. Side options galore! Everything tasted great down to the sweet tea. Table service could have been better. Other servers were like busy bees. I will drive across Houston to visit again.

Dan S.

Yelp
Placed order via phone approx 10am for a 6:00pm pickup. Arrive to restaurant and order not ready. I had to pull over, park and wait for food. Employee (female) working the drive through need orientation in people skill and customer service.

Jeff N.

Yelp
If I understood correctly they went bankrupt and closed some locations. But so glad we have this location and another in cypress. Plenty of parking and plenty of seating and staff. If you never been before you really should try for a good meal at a great price. Many options and choices. From beef, chicken, fish and other items. Love Lubys and will always be a customer.

Donna T.

Yelp
I am updating my review again. Luby's is still one of my go to comfort food stops. But lately the service has been extremely slow. There is one gentlemen that is painfully slow. He ends up holding up the whole line. I wish the salads did not have tomatoes already on them. Not everyone can have them or like them! I still like them but change a few of your staff and it will more smoother.

Doug R.

Yelp
Horrible. Always out of butter. Rolls tough. Ran out of cream gravy tonight. Napkins wet. Gal at checkout on her personal phone. Manager seems clueless as what to say or do about any of this.

Vilma D.

Yelp
People are wonderful and the food is just like growing up so happy to come here weekly and start traditions with my family

Tanisha K.

Yelp
I have been in Houston 6 years and this is my first time going to Lubys. I actually enjoyed my meal. I loved the rotisserie chicken Mac and cheese and dressing. FYI the cranberry sauce is the whole cranberries). The green beans had no flavor or bacon, cornbread was dry and candied yams weren't candied. I still have it a 4 cause I didn't expect much from those other items! These three can be my new meal favorite when I visit again.

James S.

Yelp
Used to be excellent went to the drive thru sold me a large sweet in a small cup that was regular not sweet. Then did not put gravy on my chicken fried steak or my mashed potatoes as I asked for white gravy on both. Called to complain and put me on hold for 30 minutes

AlehLucha O.

Yelp
I always order to go. Food is more or less never ready. People there seem lost at times. But food is great! I'm used to the waiting

Mike A.

Yelp
Like so many others, I was really dreading the closing of Luby's last summer, and I was thrilled when I heard it was bought out and would not close. I've been a big Luby's fan since college days way many years ago. Now after eating there tonight I'm like wishing someone would put Luby's out of their misery, and mine. I knew it had gone down recently, but tonight was shockingly terrible. We went at 6 pm. The selection was very limited, the liver (don't judge) looked nasty. The cream gravy was watered down, the rice was under cooked (crunchy), the desserts were practically all gone and what was left was cut into tiny pieces and packaged and sold as a whole piece. (Pic attached). Worst Luby's experience in 45 years. This is the Luby's at 290 and 1960. Oh yeah, the paper towel dispensers in the restroom didn't work, that's gotta be a health code violation, and the restroom needed cleaning.

Mike M.

Yelp
My primary Luby's on Hwy 290 and W. Tidwell closed a few months ago and this one is almost as close to my home so this location will be my new go to. It is also located on the 290 frontage road near FM 1960 (in front of the Harley Davidson dealership) and is part of a large shopping center that includes other restaurants and an Academy Sporting goods among other stores. There is ample parking space here. Inside there is the one serving line and a very large dining room with a lot of windows. Recently I had the soup and salad combo for $6.99 which is a great value. My salad had many extras on it that I enjoyed and my clam chowder was good but just a little salty. Another visit was for the seafood pot pie with green beans and pinto beans. The pie had a nice flaky crust with shrimp and crawfish in it that was all good along with the veggies. This combo meal was about $12 and change including drink and tax. Luby's is a standard for home cooked style meals. Consistency and value here is the key and that's why I am a fan and will return.

Wendy S.

Yelp
Food was great! Service was excellent. They even said "thank you " as we were leaving! Say what you want abt Lubys but this one was really good! Keep up the terrific service

john c.

Yelp
I ordered three meals none of them has any gravy's and the food are all cold, and the bag of the food was not tied for the third party delivery . The drinks were not sit on any boxes/or bags. The person handling the orders is not responsible one as supposed to be. This luby's is not as good as the one used to be.

Katherine A.

Yelp
Called in 30mins before to order dinner. Fried fish and chicken fried chicken. Then got all the way home and no fish. Waste of time and moneh

Michelle F.

Yelp
The last time I came I said I was never coming back . But, today I decided to give it one more chance. The liver I was served was burned. The portion of the potatoes was really small and they were cold. Corn bread was also cold and so dry I choked on it. I won't be returning. This restaurant is poor value for what you pay even with the senior discount.

Cynthia V.

Yelp
There is something so comforting and welcoming about Luby's. This location is excellent: very clean, courteous staff, fresh food. I love the Lu Ann platter; it is such a great value: half-portion of an entree plus 2 sides. I always add a roll and a dessert, so it usually comes out to about $16 or less, which is an excellent deal for the amount of food. My favorites include the fried chicken or chicken fried steak for entrees and the mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, or fried okra for sides. You can't beat that comfort food feeling!

Lynn R.

Yelp
Love Luby's! There is something for everyone for sure and the food is always delicious! Let's support them so they stay around for a long time! Price is right and fast fresh food!

Kate M.

Yelp
Ate at this location yesterday for lunch. It's taken a turn for the worse since my last visit. Outside is unkept, signs are faded and just an overall tired vibe. The same can be said for inside regarding the staff, no one seemed thrilled to be here. I ordered chicken fried chicken, two veggies, roll and tea. There wasn't a good thing to say about any of it. The chicken was undercooked. Veggies were cold, the tea tasted old and was cloudy, even the roll was a shrunken sad version from what it used to be. I hate to say but I think the rumors about Luby's closing are true- it definitely felt like everyone here has given up and are just waiting for the phone call.

Rowdy R.

Yelp
The food was very good, on the other hand I saw 2 or 3 employees walk past this spoon on the floor one even sweeping right next to it, could you atleast kick it in the sweep been and act like nothing happened? But the funny part was when we asked for silverware all we were offered was a table that had plastic ware, i understand covid concerns and that but at the same time why is someone on the other side of the restraunt folding and sorting silverware into napkins. Pretty frustrating to eat a chicken fried steak with a bend fork and bendy knife. Wasnt the same lubys I had as a kid (didn't have jello today). P.S. Rumor still has it that spoon is still on the floor

Kelsey F.

Yelp
We come here a lot because it is one of my husband's favorites. I usually get the chicken fried steak while he gets the fish. Will definitely continue to come here. The employees are always very friendly and attentive and the food is delicious. My one and only critique would be that sometimes the fried chicken can be a tad dry. Besides that, will definitely keep returning.

Weston A.

Yelp
Excellent prices, good food been coming for years even when it was touch and go during covid but that isnt why Lubys gets a 20 star rating. I want to speak about my experiences with the server Victor. Every time me and the family visits he radiates positivity in such a way that can be infectious in a short amount of time. High spirited, knowledgeable, and always seems to go above and beyond. Sung happy birthday to my mum 1 day and calmed my daughter down from a tantrum the next. Not a whiff of inauthenticity. Its the little things that counts. A worker like him is rare. Lubys did a great job hiring such talent but must say doing a poor job wasting his potential. Put him out there to interact with the masses. Utilize him before he gets dulled down or before another talent scout like lubys notices. Also the pies have been phenomenal lately

Farrah A.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, Luby's is my jam. Family dinners. Valentine's lunches. Carb loading... At this particular location, I enjoyed a memorable meal with my ma and grandma. That's three generations and three Luanne platters. Manager specials, weekend breakfast offered, speedy Wi-Fi, friendly hostesses/servers, drive-thru to-go. The team behind the counter seemed a bit annoyed when my mom asked a few questions. Not a fan of that.

Amanda C.

Yelp
I didn't take a picture, sorry but first I tasted the food and realized it has no flavor! How can fried shrimp taste like water? Has a soggy batter too it slid right off, how can green beans with bacon have no seasoning at all? And I didn't see any bacon. just imagine eating plain canned green beans.. The fried okra was good though just needs some salt.(everyrhing has no taste) And the batter on the fried fish was slimy underneath and flavorless so I "slid" it away and just ate the insides with the much needed tarter sauce. Next time I'll just try cajun seafood from somewhere. they know how to season food and fry it in the right breading. Not saying I'll never eat lubys again...I would try something much different..maybe I just got the wrong things. Idk first time for everything Oh the bread roll was soft comes with no butter and is not as soft as golden corral for sure but was just ok. Semi fresh taste.

Billy C.

Yelp
Just left there on 1/22/23 @1:41PM. They could not process the line fast enough and after waiting for 35 minutes they were out of fish. Asked when more would come up and they said 15 minutes. You have got to be kidding me. You know that the crowd is large on Sunday Mgr should have been prepared.

Katie H.

Yelp
Maybe it's a "shame on me" thing for ordering takeout dinner here on a Saturday evening at 6pm, but the food was OLD and soggy. Luby's legitimately boxed food up from the 11am rush, and I am so disappointed. Also, 50% of my order had substitutes without notice... I can maybe understand one item... but 4 out of 9 items were incorrect and the ones that were correct were soggy and extremely salty. I can see why Luby's is on the way out the door this August. It definitely has changed over the years, such a shame!

JCC L.

Yelp
I always get a good meal at this location(or any other Lubys for that matter) whenever I'm in town I eat here every day... Great selection, friendly staff, and everything is delicious...I get the works and it's never over $16.00 so it's a great value.Real comfort food! I am from California and I sure wish Lubys was out there.

Ralphelle J.

Yelp
This is the best location , I usually go every weekend for their breakfast. The staff is EXTREMELY helpful & the food is delicious , prices are unsurpassable Wish I could give it 6 stars!

Kyle F.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying I have not been in a Luby's in 10 plus years but after hearing that this place is making a comeback I had to try it out. We ordered the fried fish and chicken fried steak and both were amazing! We finished it off with a piece of chocolate pie. It reminded me of the good old days and I really enjoyed the meal. Tim the manager even came around to make sure everything was good. He was very friendly and topped off the experience. Overall I'm glad lubys is still around and I'll be back for sure!

Whitney L.

Yelp
The place is just clean! The food is soo good it touched my soul! On Sunday the spot was not packed but I love how the presentation was on point. The staff helpful and friendly! What I really can appreciate how well the salad bar was well kept! Keep up the good work!

M C.

Yelp
I went here twice and they enforce social distancing very good! I liked the crispy batters fish fillet with mash and mac. I also have ordered the chicken fried chicken with white gravy in the side and a wheat roll. I appreciated that the waitress went out of her way to find me some black tea for my cheesecake!! It was so sweet of her!! ;-; I love the service here, they are always ready to help and check on me quite often to see if I need anything. I appreciate their hard work!

Pam B.

Yelp
Sorry I used to love Lubys but I hate their website and the food has lost the quality it used to have. You have a manager's special and lots of vegetables & desserts. So why can't they be listed on website?

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Just left the restaurant- if you want to call it that. Very disappointed. Chopped steak hard as a brick, Chess pie tasted like wet sand with lots and lots of sugar, broccoli like mush - spent $32. Lubys stole my money in exchange for nausea. Never again. Don't go here. Go to Texas Roadhouse or Black Bear across the street.

Pam P.

Yelp
During the holidays, thanksgiving and Christmas shopping and life in general is hectic. In addition to shopping & wrapping presents, you've got to cook a big fancy meal. I'm always a hostess with the mistress but even I need a little help. I can always count on Lubys to come through with the good homemade cornbread dressing. It is a very time consuming and tedious dish to make but a must have for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I prepare everything else then go to Luby's and pick up a few quarts at $8.99 each of their cornbread dressing. It is a time saver and a life saver for me. Thank you Luby's for offering quality food.

Jeff W.

Yelp
Luby's serves comfort food, which is fresh. Their prices are fair and reasonable. Families love Luby's and why wouldn't they; affordable menu and the sort of fare kids want. Thankfully, Luby's offers a number of healthy menu selections, which is always a decided plus when it comes to cafeteria style chain restaurants. Luby's is by no means a five star restaurant. It is a simple, unadorned family restaurant, which emphasizes customer service and consistently features friendly employees. If you are looking for a place in your community where decent food is guaranteed give Luby's a try; they've been around for 65+ years so they must be doing something right.

Brandi D.

Yelp
I had the white fish on 1/8/22, I was severely food poisoned by this meal. I'm still currently recovering and had to seek out medical treatment to help rectify this health issue. Please be cautious when eating seafood at this establishment .

Barbara A.

Yelp
Forgot my sides, had to go back. Chicken fried steak is worst I've ever had. Mac and okra were good

Rhonda A.

Yelp
Good is excellent and staff friendly and courteous. Great selection. Plenty of parking and decent hours

Cloresa M.

Yelp
Service was slow because they were severely short staffed but the food was good and the people were nice. The lemonade from soda machine wasn't working properly even after they changed it. My hubby purchased a plastic souvenir tumbler; that I though was cool until it was used and we learned that it didn't hold drinks well. But at least we're able to use the lid on a GOOD tumbler. I'm more understanding about the situation because of the pandemic we're in right now. Plus we love y'all!!!Thank you for providing your service during this scary time, many blessings to you.

F L.

Yelp
Ivonne and Daniel are worth coming back here!!! Service is awesome! Nice personable service with a big smile on their faces!

Eugene M.

Yelp
This location has probably caused me to never patronize another Luby's again. Let me give some examples why. I once went their "All You Can Eat" breakfast, food was cold and tasteless but overlooked it as possibly we came too late. But when I tried to eat my toast, the "butter-like oil" had soaked through the Texas toast!!!! I ordered more AFTER I explained the problem with the toast. The replacement came out the same! The guy who brought it to me said the toast is prepared that way but with jelly I shouldn't taste it. My wife and I have constantly seen food handling violations. We always let the manager know but no changes occur. The lady preparing the salads were using her hands, with disposable gloves on, to get handfuls scoops of croutons versus using utensils. She then proceeded to get a hand handful of cucumbers and place on the salad. Next, using the same gloves, opens the refrigerator door to pour dressing and use her gloved hands, again to add cheese to the salad. She closes the to-go container for the customer then ask me if I wanted a salad. No thank you. Next she steps over to main entrée and asked could she help me. I asked for whatever was not cooked so it had to be prepared fresh. The side dish bowls were dirty as well. I understand the pandemic has caused things to change but cleaning and food handling shouldn't. This is unacceptable. The manager was informed but he seemed like he was too scared to say something or was tired of saying this to his staff. I would recommend that this place be shut down and a get re-trained on food handling but THEY JUST REOPENED DUE TO COVID-19!!!! CLOSE IT DOWN PERMANENTLY!

Mark B.

Yelp
This evening was my second time visiting this location for takeout. Unlike most locations, this location has a drive through for takeout, but I always prefer to go inside and see what looks good. I found the staff on the serving line very friendly and accommodating to my wants. Being located on the NW Freeway (290) at FM 1960 is bad enough traffic-wise, plus add to that the 290 construction.

Anita G.

Yelp
This Luby's claims online that they have curbside pickup. This is not true, I had to find a place to park and then walk in to pick up my order. I order curbside due to not being able to walk very far before my back gives out. I do not recommend this restaurant for this fact.

Emily A.

Yelp
The worst!!! Just waited in the drive thur line for 30 mins. They are out of corn bread, zucchini, salad!! But you still order it you just won't get it..

Autumn B.

Yelp
I love this place! I usually come for breakfast on Saturday or Sundays, or I come for lunch for the delicious baked fish and excellent homemade tarter sauce. There was one thing that was an issue for me today, and it is the flying gnat that I kept having to shoo away from my food. I hope the next time I visit this location, they have the gnat issue under control.
