Chinese Coffee Company Luckin Coffee Is Opening First American Cafe | Eater NY

"A popular Chinese coffee company will open its first American location at 755 Broadway at East Eighth Street in the East Village, though there is no opening date yet, as reported by EV Grieve. Founded in Beijing in 2017 and now based in Xiamen, the chain has more locations in China than Starbucks, with just over 24,000 stores in China, Singapore, and Malaysia. The cafes are known for operating what it describes as a "100 percent cashier-less environment," geared towards pickup and delivery orders as well as dine-in spaces. The menu includes lattes like the coconut, the Velvet (made with thick Hokkaido milk), and the Little Butter (made with French butter); Americanos mixed with juices such as orange and fizzy apple; and other espresso-based drinks. The New York cafe is taking over what had been a Sunglass Hut store, and the company’s LinkedIn page indicates its American home base will be in Secaucus, New Jersey, where it is hiring; Eater has reached out for more information. The company went public on the Nasdaq in 2019 but was later revealed to have falsified its financials and was charged with fraud in 2020, paying a $180 million fine; in 2022 the company filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy and fired its previous executives." - Nadia Chaudhury

I ordered an iced coconut latte. Well I was disappointed. It didn’t taste great. But I guess it’s just my opinion. The price was good I paid 2 dollars for it. Staff is fast and efficient. I ordered it 8:15 and it was almost immediately ready at 8:16 It’s good to get to know the biggest coffee company in china. The place is brand new and they have restrooms which is great. I would recommend you to visit it yourself.

Happy to discover new and exciting coffee options! My recent experience included a hot decaf cappuccino with almond milk that was absolutely wonderful, with impeccable creaminess and flavor. But what really surprised me was the Pineapple Cold Brew. The combination of coffee and pineapple, though unusual, was incredibly refreshing and interesting. I'm delighted to have tried something so different and delicious! This is a great new coffee shop and I highly recommend it. Staff were personable too.

When I visiting my daughter in NYC last month, we stopped in on a nasty rainy day. We took advantage of their promo in which the first two drinks were only $1.99 if you order through the app (QR code available at the front of the store). We tried the Pink Sunrise Refresher. Our drink was ready in about 3 minutes, and it looked beautiful with the strawberry cold foam layered over mango. It was absolutely delicious and just the right amount of sweetness - not overly cloying. I only wish they would open locations in Chicago!

Google
I stopped by the new Luckin Coffee at 8th Street and Broadway, and it’s a fresh addition to the neighborhood. The shop is sleek and modern, with a mostly cashier-less setup—everything is ordered through their app, making pickup super fast and convenient. I tried the Americano with espresso shot and it was not that strong. Prices are reasonable for NYC, and the space is great for a quick stop or a casual hangout

Google
Decent size coffee shop with convenient ordering system. Despite coffee shop being super busy, staffs were efficient and got my drinks in about 5 minutes. Unfortunately the Iced Coconut latte was very waterdown and you barely taste any coffee or coconut flavor. The iced chocolate was ok but nothing special. Overall the drinks were not impressive but would give it another try for other drink. Make sure you download their app for special deals on first order.

Google
Based on my personal experience with Luckin Coffee, I tried two of their recommended drinks: the Pineapple Cold Brew and the Iced Coconut Latte. Both were excellent and not overly sweet. The Pineapple Cold Brew was especially refreshing — my wife loved it! The app is user-friendly and clearly highlights which drinks come with discounts. We’ll definitely be back to try more new drinks.

Google
Luckin Coffee is a great addition to the NYC coffee scene. Their coffee blend was created by world champions in the coffee craft. They offer matcha and fruit refreshers in addition to coffee based drinks. Cooled off with a matcha frappe. Texture was consistent with the exception of 1 or 2 small ice chunks. Matcha strength was perfect. Also had a sip of the iced coconut latte and loved it. It was one of the smoothest coffees I’ve had and was perfectly balanced. Be sure to download their app as there is a promotion to get your first drink for $1.99. After ordering on the app there is a scanner at the pickup area to scan your qr code to indicate that you have arrived.

Google
I stopped by during their promo where the first drink is only $1.99 if you order through the app (QR code available at the front of the store). I tried the Pink Sunrise Refresher. Ordering was easy, though the physical menu isn’t very clear—you’ll find the full details in the app. My drink was ready in about 3 minutes, and it looked beautiful with the strawberry cold foam layered over mango. The first sip was refreshing and tasty, but as I kept drinking, it became overly sweet and I wasn’t able to finish it.

Yelp
I had to try Luckin due to the hype online. I hear that there's more Luckin coffee shops in China than there are Starbucks. Making them a huge competitor in China's coffee market. The first thing you have to know is that Luckin is handled all via the app. This is great if you're an introvert, but probably not so great if you're low on phone storage space or concerned about privacy. The first 2 drinks are only $1.99 +tax on the app. I tried the Iced Kyoto Matcha Coconut Latte. Getting a large drink came out to a total of $2.71 after tax. The drink was very milky and not too overly sweet. Their matcha is a syrup, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. It wasn't bad but I prefer the powder way more. Overall a pretty seamless experience, and our drinks came out super quick. Didn't have to talk to anyone at all which is even better. The app does feel very Shein or Temu , I'm thinking all apps are like that in China? I have a lot of 50% off coupons in my account and I have a feeling you rarely ever have to pay full price. That alone is enough to steal a lot of competition from the giant coffee companies like Starbucks and Dunkin.

Yelp
Visited Luckin Coffee while in NYC after hearing about it on YouTube, it's originally from China and offers a really cool Asian-forward twist on coffee. They have matcha drinks and some fun latte flavors you don't usually find at typical coffee chains. I didn't get their coffee this time, but I tried the Mango Smoothie with Grapefruit, and it totally impressed me. The grapefruit pieces were real, sitting at the bottom and pairing perfectly with the creamy mango. It wasn't too sweet, just refreshing and balanced, perfect for a city walk. Loved the overall vibe and creativity here. Definitely worth a visit if you want to try something a little different!

Yelp
Color me impressed. Went to Luckin Coffee today on Astor & Broadway. This place is awesome. Not vast, but it does have 4 tables and 8 comfy chairs. Orders can only be placed on the app. Once downloaded, there are coupons galore, making pretty much all drinks $1.99. I had the Iced-Chocolate. On the app their are so many ways to customize. The staff is great and the interior is spotless. Be warned, no bathroom. However there are so many places close by to take care of business. The app is fun. So many options. The pastry items are a bit high, but comparable with Starbucks...but so much better. It gets busy, but you don't have to wait in line to order. They even have Wi-Fi. If I'm near a Luckin, Starbucks will be in my rearview mirror forever.

Yelp
Found this coffee shop from popping up on my Instagram feed a while back and had to pop in since I was close to a location. You can order ahead to pick up in the cafe. When I first signed up in the app they had a welcome offer for any drink for $1.99. After that is used there are other promo coupons in the app. I like that you can customize the drinks how you want. I got the iced coconut velvet latte. I liked its smooth yet bold flavor of the coconut and coffee together. I would definitely order it again. The cafe itself is pretty small. There are a few places to sit and enjoy the drink, but I would consider it more of a pop in and go spot.

Yelp
Download the app for promos like $1.99 drinks. If you need a referral for the app: https://iyyds.us/wmsrnQz The iced coconut latte is a little too bitter for me. It's OK. Don't really like it. I liked the Kyoto coconut Matcha. That's the one to get. The coconut makes the drink creamy. This is slightly better than the Kyoto Matcha. The drinks here are pretty good wide range. If you download the app, you can get their drinks for $1.99. If you need a referral for the app: https://iyyds.us/wmsrnQz I got the iced coconut latte today. Drink was ok. It was a little too bitter for me. I liked the Kyoto Coconut Matcha. The coconut in the drink makes it rich and creamy. Get this! It tastes slightly better than Kyoto Matcha. Pineapple cold brew is OK. Artificial pineapple flavor.

Yelp
Basically Chinese Starbucks but with good dealsz Luckin is no stranger to giving out deals and coupons, pretty frequently I received 40-50% off coupons. Drinks usually cosr 2-3$ with the discounts. I've gotten Luckin around three times now. Their Pineapple Cold Brew is my favorite. Refreshing to beat the summer heat. Clean inside and good app

Yelp
I've heard great things about this place, so I was very excited to finally be able to try it out. There was a buy one get one free promotion going on for matcha drinks, so I decided to get 2 Kyoto matcha lattes. The first drink was done right as I went to pick it up. I noticed the other drink wasn't ready yet, but they told me to scan my barcode anyways. About 5 minutes later, the barista noticed she mixed up my drink with someone else's. That was fine because I noticed she was really busy. There was powder that wasn't mixed in, so when I tried to mix it, most of it was just stuck to the lid. As I took a sip, I was so disappointed. I couldn't taste any matcha, and all I could taste was milk. I couldn't even finish my drink half way before I threw it out because it felt and tasted like I was straight up drinking milk.

Yelp
Known as one of the most famous coffee chains in China, Luckin Coffee now has two locations in NYC. And, if you go right now and order on their app then you can get two drinks for $2 each! The inside of this location is a bit small and has some small tables. They have free wi-fi here. When I went, I tried their matcha coconut latte and their kale booster. Both drinks were pretty good, but I just wish that you could adjust the sweetness level on them as I found them both to be very sweet.

Yelp
Happen to be standing outside the cafe and stopped in since the lady has heard of the brand! Nice clean space, you can do work in a laptop, hang and sip on coffee or in my case, a mango grapefruit drink. They give you a ton of grapefruit on the bottom so mix it up nice and good before enjoying! Our drinks were prepared fast, staff was nice and quick with making the drinks. We ordered on their app via the QR code outside (first purchase 1.99!) can't beat that. Mango Cloud Frappe done in 2 minutes time for your enjoyment! The lady told me it's the Starbucks of China! I can see why people like it we sat and hung out while sipping on our drinks. Earn points to redeem rewards in the app!

Yelp
Excited to see Luckin Coffee to open a branch in nyc! For those who don't know, they're often called the "Starbucks of China." The menu looks the same from China which is cool, but I have to say the quality felt just slightly off from what I remember. I tried the Pineapple Coffee, which leans a bit on the sweeter side, but it's a great option if you're not into bitter coffee notes. We also got the Jasmine Coffee, it tasted a little more like instant coffee, but I did enjoy the strong hint of jasmine tea in it.

Yelp
4/5 Iced Matcha Coconut Latte -- pretty smooth and good matcha flavor, quite heavy coconut base. At a glance, definitely gives a very "starbucks" fast casual feel, this is even reflected in the menu. Service was slower than expected, but it was very busy on a Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
I checked out the new Luckin Coffee location on 8th & Broadway during their soft grand opening and was pretty impressed with the interesting menu and variety. They had some great promos (only through the app), so my large 24oz drink came out to about $3. I ordered the pineapple cold brew, a mix of cold brew coffee and pineapple juice with pulp, and really enjoyed it. Not overly sweet and no artificial taste like you might expect with a drink like this. I'd definitely get it again. The drink was ready super fast, and the staff were friendly and handled the opening rush really well. The space itself is definitely geared towards grab and go. While there is some seating, this is probably not a coffee shop you'd sit down in and get some work done like a Starbucks.
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
It's busy with mobile and in-store orders. The front table only seems to have seating on the side facing the bar. There were tables along the wall. I ordered via the app the Pink Sunrise, which has milk, "coconut milk" beverage, "mango juice" (mango puree and mango syrup), strawberry syrup, green coffee bean extract, and strawberry sweet cold foam. I upgraded to the large to get the Iceplay cup (typical plastic cup with cute design) and used a coupon. It has a lot of unnatural ingredients but tasted okay. The paper cup sleeve has a cute NYC design.

Yelp
My wife wanted a caffeine kick so we swung by Luckin since it was the closest shop near us. I was hoping that I would be able to get just a basic tea or something, but was disappointed to not find it on the menu. We had to go somewhere else for me. I was also disappointed to see it was mobile order only despite there being an employee there who's only job it seemed to be was to put finished drinks on the table, check orders, and tell people they have to use their phones to order. Call me old fashioned, but I really wished they had an in person ordering system. The interior of the location is clean and inviting. It's small, so there isn't a ton of seating options. It's clearly meant for a grab & go place which is totally fine. Staff is also very friendly and you can see everyone working and not once did I see anyone slacking off. They were there to get orders made to keep customers from having to wait a long time. I really appreciated that. So, just this place is clearly not meant for someone like me. Especially since I am a straight, black tea drinker. If you are a 'I want to walk in, have my drink waiting for me, & get out of there' type of person, then this is totally the place for you. Especially if you are a matcha fan.

Yelp
Honestly cheap, fast, and decent! Tasted a bit watery for coffee but I love coconut so I liked it LOL
google avatar

Yelp
Staffs were friendly. This is one of the two Manhattan locations. The other one is near flatiron. It is mobile only ordering, there are some promos on the app. I've tried the matcha lattes and refresher drinks. It hit the spot on a hot summer day. Be careful! Don't stand next to the doors because the doors pull in and there's a lot of people. There are seats but limited.

Yelp
Oh, I have been wanting to Luckin Coffee for some time now! It's known as the "Starbucks of China" & luckily for us, we were already walking on Broadway and so it was perfect. Usually, I do a search first of where to go but yesterday, we went with the flow & stopped by wherever was on the way. If you join their rewards program & download the app, they are currently offering a $1.99 deal for any drink of your choice! If it was earlier in the day, I would've tried their coffee but since it was already 5pm, I decided to get their mango cloud frappe! For only $0.50 extra, you can upgrade from 16oz to 24 oz, so that's what we did. We ordered via app and it was ready in a matter of minutes (2min!). When picking up the drink, you just have to scan the barcode from your app to receive the drink. I wish more places did this for mobile pick up orders to reduce the chance of others' taking your drink, etc. They had a couple tables inside where you can sit and enjoy, do some work. The mango drink was yummy! I would definitely get this again & am excited to try their coffee next visit!

Yelp
With over 1,035 locations in Shanghai, making it the number one coffee chain that overtook Starbucks there, I had to see what the hype was about. First two locations in the states recently opened in NYC. My son and I decided to order the Iced Coconut Latte (most popular) and Red Velvet Latte. If you download the app, you can get the first drink for $1.99. I'm not a cold brew drinker but one of their most interesting concoctions is their pineapple cold brew. The lattes were good, it didn't leave an aftertaste in my mouths. I would rate it 7/10. I think it's more on the creamier and milky side so if that's your thing, you will enjoy it. Will most likely not return but glad I checked it out.

Yelp
I "lucked out" when I ducked in to Luckin Coffee during a sudden summer rain storm- what a cute little cafe! They are doing a promotion where you can get your first drink for $1.99+tax if you download their app and order through the app, so I got the matcha latte made with whole milk. I saw that they had some interesting drinks like a Coconut latte and a Pineapple coffee, so will try those another time when I'm in the mood for a sweet drink. Order through the app and pick up at the counter- you will need to scan your QR code to pick up. I thought the matcha latte was very well balanced, not too bitter! Service was fast and friendly. Seating is very limited so not a place to hang out in.
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
The mango frappe is one of the best I ever had. It's creamy made from real fruits and have grapefruit pulps in it. Nothing I ever had came close to this mango drink. The staff were friendly too. It's usually packed but it is clean and they have seats in here. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Came here hearing all the raves. Got their popular coconut latte. The beans aren't bad but whatever they use inside left a weird film in your mouth the coconut taste was awful. I got try green boosting looking drink reminds me of the drink from hey tea. Not as good as hey tea. And the red drink felt like it was just a sweet Starbucks refresher drink. If you are looking for no interaction or customer service this place is the way to go. I went in looking at the person at the front and she says I have to order via QR code or website. She"ll explain if I have any questions but they can't take your order. Some people behind me also seem as frustrated with having to download the app or use their QR code. I get it makes things faster. But if it's going to be like this but there's baristas standing right there. I would rather go to a place with all robots instead to take my order or go to a local coffee shop that has the human connection there. You only get the deal if you download their app. I rather not waste my time getting a deal by download app.
google avatar

Carina H.

Yelp
I like how customizable the drinks are in the app. I got the Pineapple Cold Brew with Raspberry Juice, which tasted great but was more filling than I expected it to be. There's plenty of seating, and the order was ready quick. It wasn't too loud or crowded on a weekday evening.

Yelp
We've been to a few Luckin locations in Guangzhou and HK and as a 30+ year Starbucks customer, I prefer the taste of the coffee here. Pike is my calibration tool, but it's always been a little over roasted for my taste. Purely subjective, but the Luckin coffee product is smoother, less acidic and less dark. Some folks swear by the lighter Dunkin coffee, but my favorite is a large, freshly brewed McDonald's coffee (blasphemy, ok, so I'm not bougie) with 5 light creams. The service here is basic, but functional. Condolences to the folks that want to spend 3 hours surfing on their laptops, but this is a coffee shop with fruity drinks and some baked goods. Come here with expectations for the aforementioned and you shouldn't be disappointed, We tried the $2 promo and think that issues may arise when Luckin starts charging the full $6-$7 per beverage. At that point, it'll be a large...I'm never going to say venti or whatever's SBUX is trying to program into me...(burnt) Pike or Mickey's for me.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered through the app for their $1.99 first drink promotion and got the coconut cold brew. It was refreshing and not too sweet! Pickup was quick and staff were friendly! I probably wouldn't pay full price $6.25 for this but great lion a discount!

Yelp
price - $5 including tax food - 4/5 service - 5/5 ambiance - 5/5 this was one of the shops that ive been wanting to go for the longest time! im so glad i finally got a chance to try it out! im definitely a fan of their ice matcha latte! theres a perfect mixture of milk and matcha so i was really happy about that. i also got the coconut latte but this just tasted like straight coffee. there wasnt really a coconut flavor to it because the coffee was so strong. the service was amazing! i got my order within 5 mins despite the long line! the barista forgot to give me my purchasing bag but he was so nice about it! he apologized and even expressed his gratitude to me. the ambiance is really vibey, and i think it will be even better once time passes
google avatar

Yelp
Girl bye not the only way to order is through the app. Now while I pay for storage so this doesn't apply, what if someone didn't have any lol.

Yelp
I walked in thinking that it felt like I was in a gas station coffee shop, but that I would give it a try anyway because it was affordable with the special. There was no warmth from the workers who seem to be hidden behind a wall of coffee machines. Once the coffee did come out, it was undrinkable. I thought I'd suffer through it because I wasn't here for the taste; I needed the caffeine, but just couldn't do it. It wasn't worth it. Never, ever again. So many other choices... why would I do this. If you go in and like the vibe, then enjoy, otherwise, steer clear!

Yelp
I was very curious about Luckin's US menu so checked them out when I heard they opened a NY location. Tldr: Luckin NY = more mature Blank Street vibe but Starbucks quality (I think Starbucks is worse than Blank Street). For context, Luckin is a well oiled coffee shop chain in China with interesting flavors- think Jasmine cappuccino, maotai latte, etc. The US menu was extremely limited in their specialty coffee drinks and featured a line of juice based coolers. We tried the velvet iced latte but there was nothing velvet about it and the espresso tasted like Starbucks- slightly burnt without the richness of espresso. The pineapple iced coffee was better- I enjoyed the pineapple bits in the drink and they made a decent iced coffee that didn't taste burnt or too acidic. I think everything is automated here, so while I enjoyed the novelty, I wasn't too impressed by the actual coffee quality.

Yelp
The worst matcha latte I've had in my life. The matcha powder was not mixed in and all floated at the top of the cup on the lid. The drink had no flavor, tasted like I was drinking lukewarm milk. No cashier, have to download the app to order yourself.

Kian T.

Yelp
Drinks taste better AND are far cheaper than Starbucks. Plus, thanks to the app, one can easily order ahead and just grab and go. Looking forward to my next coupon and visit.
