The Best Ramen in Portland, Beaverton, and Beyond | Eater Portland

"Tucked inside the Tigard H Mart, Lucky Cat serves a tight ramen-focused menu with rich broths. For something creamier, try the tonkotsu ramen with bok choy, mushrooms, and pork belly, or the soy-based beef shoyu ramen with tender beef and bamboo shoots. Vegan and vegetarians can slurp up some veggie broth, vegan kale noodles, and fried tofu — just remember to ask for no egg if ordering vegan." - Zoe Baillargeon

Google
Based on 1 visit: 4.5 stars for quality of food, and relatively reasonable price. Had the beef ramen, and it was quite good. I like that hot tea is included / 'free' (as is water). This place is inside H Mart, right by the entrance, so if you sit at their bar it may be cold in the winter. They seem always to be very busy, though it took way too long to pay them so that we could get on with our day. Level 2 spicy was the right level for me.

Google
BOMB vegetarian ramen I was genuinely shocked how good the vegetarian ramen was here. I just so happened to be on this side of town and popped into the HMart on a rainy day when I accidentally discovered this place. Decided to give it a try and so glad I did! Services was promoted and friendly. Place was very clean. Food came out within about 10 minutes. The ramen had a great depth of flavor and spice. It was also packed with tofu and veggies! I wish I lived closer so I could make this place a regular stop!

Google
This one's tucked inside H‑Mart, so it kind of feels like a secret. I wasn’t expecting much but the ramen was legit. Rich broth, chewy noodles, soft egg just right. They also serve chicken and waffles which is random but I kind of respect it. Seats are limited, so grab it to go if it’s packed.

Sun F.

Google
Stopped here on a weekend after a baseball game and wanted to grab a quick bite. Busy afternoon but was able to secure 3 seats. Food came out fast and server was attentive in refilling our waters. No rush on us to finish our meal. Appreciated the friendly service as well as the cleanliness of this eatery. Price for the ramen is amazingly reasonable and I would think that it is probably the lowest in the Portland area for now. Portions are also generous. This will be our future stopover whenever we need a quick and delicious bowl of ramen.

Google
We repeatedly come back to Lucky Cat Ramen for three reasons: excellent ramen, gluten free option, and the friendly staff. The cat decor is a wonderful bonus!

Google
Tried the miso and the beef ramen. Both were super good!! It's a big bowl for only $12. The beef meat was tastier than the pork meat in the miso bowl. Both of them were definitely on the spicy side. For context, I'm from Southern California. I love spicy Mexican food. I eat spicy food all the time. They make the ramen spicy on a scale of 1-5 and since it was our first time there, we both said a 2 and that was a bit too spicy. When I go there next time I will ask for a 1. Couldn't quite eat the entire bowl so we took home leftovers and I mixed a little bit of heavy cream into mine when I reheated it. Also added some lime juice and it was perfection!!

Google
Amazing! Prices are spectacular 12$ for ramen, green tea is free and a coke is only a dollar - cheaper than dollar tree ! This place is great.

Google
Its a perfect little ramen soup counter inside H-Mart. A great spot for a quick and delicious lunch or dinner. It tends to be reasonably priced but can get a bit busy. The ramen is delicious though! I get the Tonkatsu Ramen - I’d highly recommend it, very delicious! You also get to choose if you want to add spiciness to it at all.

Christopher C.

Yelp
This no-frill kitchen in the front part of H-Mart has excellent-tasting Veggie Ramen, a reasonable price, and quick and friendly service. Vegan friendly!!

Yelp
Surprisedly good. The original idea was getting a quick bite from H Mart readymade food and ate in the food court. We didn't find anything we liked and ended up sitting in the ramen bar. The lady who took our order was attentive and quick. The kitchen people carefully brought the food, and attitude was polite. I wasn't sure whether hot tea would be an extra cost and got ice water. Portion was normal, tons of vegetables and FOUR slices of chashu meat, which I was already amazed. Soup was thick but not salty at all. Aji tama was perfect. The price is reasonable ($12 per bowl, no matter what favors of soup bases). The front line people always made sure to keep the bar table clean. It really reminds me of family own ramen shops in Japan. Thanks for the delicious food. We want to come back again for different spicy levels of ramen, as well as the appetizers.

Yelp
Tucked inside the H-Mart is this small ramen place. Small menu, but it's got something for everyone. The bar seating is always full, but no worries, you can go sit in the large dining space and they'll bring your food out to you. I had the tonkatsu ramen at a spice level 4 out of 5. The first bite made me sneeze (this is how I judge the perfect spice level...exactly one sneeze on the first bite), but after that it was all flavor. I love that they include pickled ginger as part of the vegetable component. Delicious bowl of ramen.

Yelp
A solid casual spot for ramen! We stopped in since we were going to H Mart, and were seated immediately. There's bar seating or a dining area in the back (with a cozy fireplace) that they'll deliver your order to. We love a small focused menu. Tried their tonkotsu with spice level 3, which is probably the most my wimpy palate can handle, and it was delicious! For only $12/bowl, there were more toppings than I expected. Now it wasn't the most complex broth or the bounciest noodles I've had (we ate a LOT of ramen while living in San Diego) but how can you beat $12?! And the service was top notch. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Welcoming service, delicious broth and perfect noodles. We just stopped in for the first time and had an awesome experience here. Get the tonkotsu ramen!!!
google avatar

Siamen M.

Yelp
Absolutely love it! I know this is not an authentic Japanese ramen place. Based on the food quality is great and the Service is fast. I really enjoyed. What also is great is the price is very reasonable. Definitely comfort food. Everyone seating around the bar style hang out place. You totally forgot that you are inside H mart.

Yelp
We tried a new beef ramen with a spicy level of 2 stars. My husband thought it was very spicy. The broth was full of beef flavor and was very clean. It came with generous portions of corn, seaweed, bok choy, and mushrooms. The beef slices were good as well. I ordered a 4-star spicy level Tonkotsu ramen. I haven't tried 5 stars, but I think 4 stars is my favorite level. It was just spicy enough. It wasn't extremely spicy, but I enjoyed the flavor profile.

Yelp
I was running a few errands in Tigard and got hungry. Fired up the old Yelp app and came upon this place. 4.8 stars! In H-Mart? Well I guess that'll allow me to knock off a few items on my to-do list in one place. Restaurant is near the front entrance of H-Mart to the right, just as you walk in. It's a small place, all counter service (seemed busy) and take out. I asked for the ramen with the tonkotsu broth. I was a little surprised when the next question was "spice level 1-5". I was a little taken aback at this question. I like spicy food, when I'm expecting it, I just didn't expect it with tonkotsu broth. I ordered "1", hoping that it would be minimally "spicy", if at all and some extra chashu. Paid, went to grab some things from the store and came back. Order was ready. Took it home. Poured the tonkotsu broth in a big bowel. Looked very creamy. Promising! Then took the box packed with the chashu, egg, noodles etc. and placed those ingredients into the bowel and mixed. Everything was still warm. Did not have to reheat. Taste: Too spicy. Overwhelmed everything. Couldn't savor the creamy richness of the broth at all. I'm thinking "if this is a 1, what is a 5?" Didn't really enjoy it .

Yelp
This place is located inside of H Mart, which is a little funky. They have a few barstools to sit on around the kitchen area, but it none of those are available when you get there they offer you the dining room that is shared between them, the Thai restaurant next door and the grocery store, which is fine. You don't come here for the ambiance, but for the delicious ramen. As long as I'm eating that ramen I don't care where I am or what kind of chair I'm sitting in. I order the beef shoyu at a spice level 2. I thought that I had a pretty good spice tolerance until I came here and can only handle a two, fair warning, this place is spicy. Ramen comes with lots of veggies, a boiled egg, noodles, and a good amount of meat inside. I've never been able to finish a bowl by myself, portions are huge! Overall we really enjoy this place.
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
This place is my favorite ramen place and it never fails. The food is amazing good, the staff are friendly and fast, and it's cozy.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
For the price this place is banger $12 for a bowl of decent ramen is a steal in today's prices. The ramen isn't the best but it hits the spot. The staff is friendly enough. Great lunch spot for sure. Only have bar style seating so not great for kids or big groups. And nice to hit the groceries after :)

Yelp
This little mom-and-pop ramen right in front of HMart when you walk in might not look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you--what they're serving up is nothing short of incredible. I ordered their spicy 3 star tonkotsu ramen, and wow. The broth was deep, tangy, bold, and full of that homemade flavor you can only get from a place that's been perfecting their recipe for years. The spice hits you fast and hard, so fair warning: if you're not great with heat, maybe ask them to go light. I like spicy food, and even for me, this was intense--but in a delicious, addictive kind of way. The noodles were springy and clearly made fresh, and the pork was unbelievably tender. The topping was fresh and thoughtfully placed, from the buttery soft egg to the crunchy bean sprouts and scallions. What really made this place shine was the price. Under $15 for a full, satisfying bowl that felt like it came straight from someone's home kitchen. Owner is a sweet lady. Support this little spot--you can taste the care in every bite. Just don't say I didn't warn you about the spice!

Yelp
Saw Lucky Cat on Tik Tok so we had to check it out. We ordered beef double meat and tonkatsu ramen, and two orders of tempura shrimp. Within 5 minutes, the food came out steamy and hot. The broth flavor was good, noodle cooked well, and it was stocked with lots of meat and veggies. Ordering was quick and they were very helpful and pleasant. Lots of dining tables and someone to clean up.
google avatar

Yelp
A simple quick bowl of ramen is sometimes all you need when in a rush. We stopped by here to get a quick bite and were impressed by the quick and very friendly service provided. There's only spots to sit at the counter and a limited menu to order from. I tried the beef shoyu ramen as it sounded interesting to me. The ramen came out pretty quick. The ramen had a good texture and the broth was very flavorful. It wasn't your standard ramen, but a bit unique, in a good way. The price was also one of the most reasonable for a bowl of ramen.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
We have ordered shrimp tempura which was super crunchy and delicious, as well as the tonkotsu and beef miso ramen. Price is very reasonable and portion is well worth it. Service is excellent and prompt. Limited dine in space and quick service.

Jen M.

Yelp
Our favorite ramen place in the Portland-Vancouver area. Delicious broth! Find it Inside H-Mart. Great service and fast.

Yelp
Lucky Cat was by far the most authentic and flavorful ramen I've ever had! I've had this saved to my list for awhile and finally made the drive over here and I will definitely be coming back a few times a month. The service was very friendly and quick, less than 2 minutes from ordering my ramen was brought to me piping hot. The complimentary chili oil had a really nice flavor that elevated the broth and all of the veggies were cooked to perfection. I was worried the Bok Choy would be too hard to bite into but it was perfect. I wasn't a huge fan of the soy sauce egg, it was a bit too salty, and the bamboo shoots aren't to my taste, but I would honestly make no changes to the Tonkatsu. Maybe an order of extra noodles and that's it! The service was quick, friendly, and the seating area was clean and quickly flowing with new people. I would definitely recommend this place, any time, any day.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been interested in trying Lucky Cat Raman for a long time and I finally made it here. My family of four all enjoyed our Raman. The portion size is large and the service was excellent. I loved the flavor of the broth, which I ordered at a medium spicy level. This was the perfect meal for a cold day!
google avatar

Jonathan Y.

Yelp
Probably the best ramen deal around. For $12 got a hearty bowl of fixings, noodles and meat. The broth was pretty good as well. Really fun to dine in Hmart too to be able to go walk around after looking at cool treats. Only thing I'd mention is the meat slices are pretty thin but understandable for $12. Would definitely go again.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
When I crave ramen, it is Lucky Cat that I really want. Can't beat the price, the service, and the taste. Tonkotsu is the best. If you don't mind sitting in a grocery store to eat, then you won't be disappointed. (Or, get it to go.)
google avatar

Misty F.

Yelp
First time catching them open cuz I tend to run errands the 1 day they are closed. (Mondays) The seating is very limited and looked like only stools but we lucked into two stools next to each other. Food was great, free tea and ice water, and the spice level choice was nice. Really flavorful broth! The pork was very thin sliced, my wife loved that but I prefer thicker slices. We didn't try anything other than the Tonkotsu ramen with spice levels 1 and 2 but will definitely be back!
google avatar

Shawn T.

Yelp
Its inside Hmart and owned by the same sweet lady DD who also has the thai place next to it, the tonkotsu is by far my favorite and the prices are very reasonable, service is always friendly with a smile, you can tell they appreciate you and they are very friendly, it can get busy too, i try to come during the week in the evenings and its not so bad, dont pass this place up the Ramens are all superb!!
google avatar

Clare L.

Yelp
This place made Yelp's 100 Best Ramen list -- I think it was even in the top 20? And I can totally see why! Great prices, rich and creamy broth, and perfectly bouncy noodles. Hope they get a full restaurant someday!
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
This ramen restaurant is nestled inside of H-mart. There is counter seating but you can also eat in their dining area towards the back as well. I tried their miso ramen as it's my usual go-to ramen and it was really delicious and flavorful. I got a level 3 spice and it was perfect. I tend to eat pretty spicy and 3 was an enjoyable level. I will definitely be back and recommend this place. All those times I went grocery shopping at h-mart and walked right by this place and had no idea it was so good.
google avatar

Kimie C.

Yelp
Wow! We ordered the Tonkatsu ramen, gyoza and fried shrimp. 10/10! Delicious broth, veggies and meat! The shrimp and dipping sauce were heavenly. Can't wait to go back and try something new! The service was quick and very friendly!
google avatar

Kimmy K.

Yelp
4.5/5 After doing some grocery shopping, the smell of ramen caught our attention. Lucky Cat Ramen is located inside H-Mart with the friendliest and quick service and staff. The owner of the ramen place also owns the Thai food place next door as well! We were seated right away and I ordered the Beef Shoyu Ramen. The menu description said that the ramen would come with tender chunks beef and there was a picture on the wall that showed chunky beef. The ramen came out very quickly and I was caught off guard seeing that I had thin slices of beef instead. The shoyu broth was very light but flavorful and the ramen noodles had a good texture. For being $12, they give you a pretty good portion and include a whole ramen egg. The beef was a little dry and not what I was expecting, so I would not order the beef one again. The pork tonkatsu ramen was amazing though. I got to try some of my partner's and I would definitely come back for the tonkatsu broth. The broth was creamy and garlicky, the chasu was thin, but it was not dry at all.
google avatar

Keely N.

Yelp
Lucky Cat Ramen is worth the hype for its affordable ramen bowls. I love how you can adjust the spice level. I ordered the veggie ramen with kale noodles with a spice level of 4 and thought that the broth was burning my throat from the spice. I enjoyed the sweet corn in the ramen and thought that the portions were huge. I love the variety of mushrooms. Lots of fried tofu too. Service was excellent and quick. It's definitely nice to get! What a vibe to sit at the counter.

Michael

Yelp
Great soups at a very reasonable price! The hustle and bustle of Lucky Cat's location, at the front of a busy H Mart grocery adds to the vibe, and also provides the benefit of allowing you to shop after having a nice hot bowl of noodles! The service is quick, but friendly and the free bottomless cup of tea is a nice addition. I make the 20 minute trek to H Mart several times a month, but never on Mondays as Lucky Cat is closed on that day!
google avatar

D. M.

Yelp
A great place to eat in a grocery store! Crazy, huh? This is the best ramen I've had in a very long time. Four choices (count 'em, four) on the menu. And they're all great. Great service, too....
google avatar

Eric P.

Yelp
I'm in town from Vegas visiting family and my parents brought me to Lucky Cat Ramen to try out. My dad and I got the tonkotsu and my mom got the beef shoyu. The soup came out nice and hot, which was perfect in the cold, wet weather that was going through the area. The noodles and everything inside were fresh, the meat was tender and juicy and the portion size was very generous. I chose 1 as the spice level and that was more than enough to give it the right kick. I would definitely go back for the tonkotsu. The menu is very simple and service was fast and friendly. The restaurant is essentially a small counter space inside H-Mart pretty much near the entrance but for $12 a bowl, you can't beat the price.
google avatar

Yelp
Ramen, like pho or matzo ball soup, is good for what ails you or if you just want to feel that warm hug on a coldish day. Now Lucky Cat Ramen just got a top 100 on Yelp for best restaurants in the country for 2023. Number 62 to be exact. And being that I only live a couple miles from the H Mart that it is contained within and shop at semi regularly. I figured it was about time to try some more good ramen. Portland, being a city that boasts several ramen restaurants that came over directly from Japan, and having many local ramen shops as well, this is some stiff competition. Lucky Cat did not disappoint. First off, on observation, the cat aspect is well represented with figurines of cats everywhere. There is limited seating and on a Thursday afternoon after lunchtime I had no issues. Although I'd doubt one would get a chance to get a seat on a weekend or prepare to wait. There are a few app choices and four choices for ramen. I got beef shoyu ramen with strips of beef, shiitake and enoki mushrooms, sweet corn, soft boiled egg, greens and bamboo shoots. Apparently here you get a spicy option of levels 1-5. Of course, I'm getting level five. ramen. Most Japanese food is not one for being spicy, other than wasabi and the ramen here was no exception. Yes, I had a nice warm glow during and after eating, but nothing that was burning my tongue. The broth itself was so flavorful, with drops of chili oil and soy sauce and like any other ramen shop, you are not leaving hungry. I'd say that Lucky Cat being on the Yelp 100 list is not wrong. It's a great little hidden gem right down in Tigard. Come on over to the west side, we have good ramen. As always, enjoy and support local PDX businesses.

Yelp
Excellent ramen. Humble surroundings. Out of the way in a market on Pacific. Find it sooner rather than later.

Daniel S.

Yelp
This ramen has healing properties, I drove over an hour to get here and my bowl of miso ramen rid my of my head cold. One bowl of ramen has as many health benefits as a session in a +200° sauna. If you want service with a smile, a super authentic vibe and best of all, the best ramen in the PNW, make the trip out here. I certainly will!

Norton W.

Yelp
This place makes a tasty bowl of ramen! I had their tonkatsu ramen, 3/5 spiciness, and was very satisfied. The location is a bit odd, a restaurant inside of an H-Mart, but honestly I dug the vibes. There's not a ton of seating, but there's another seating area around the corner that they're happy to bring the food to. The two women working the service side were both friendly and professional, doing a great job of handling quite a few customers.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Located inside the H-Mart is one of the best ramen funds ever. The soup has a great depth of flavor, the hot oil they add enhances that flavor as well as heat. The portions are plentiful as I was super full and satisfied - 5vpueces of char su pork, a whole egg (lots of places only give you half), and the service was super nice. There are bunch of cute decorations and you can do some shopping after. The deli area in the store can get you snacks and things for another meal.
google avatar

Somy K.

Yelp
Located near entrance of H Mart which is convenient if you're hungry while grocery shopping. The restaurant itself has bar stool seating with no backs but there's a dining space down the aisle. I ordered the tonkotsu which was okay. Simple and broth didn't have a lot of depth. The cashu is on thinner side. Service was great though.
google avatar

Kara T.

Yelp
A cute little spot inside H-mart, the prices are so great for the portions. I always find time to come here when I visit home. Service is great and the food comes quick :)
google avatar

Theresa B.

Yelp
Really good ramen, friendly service, and great prices! It really hit the spot recently when I was getting over a cold...the spice sure helps!
google avatar

Gene W.

Yelp
I was hedging between giving this great simple counter diner 4 stars or 5 stars. I've had better ramen for over $16/bowl, I've had better individual ramen components (noodle, broth, chashu, egg, veggies), and I've had larger portions elsewhere. But what earned Lucky Cat 5 stars was that all the taste aspects of the noodle bowls were very good, that is, no weak points. Plenty of noodle with just enough flavorful broth too. Different spice levels to tailor your stock.....2-3 is good enough unless you're a spicehead. What clinched the 5 stars was the super-friendly prompt service and the value ($12 for a good size bowl of yumminess is almost unheard of). Limited menu but you know you came for the ramen! Folks worry about the limited seating (only 12 stools) so close to the buildings chilly entrance, but there's extra tables further inside the HMart for "takeout" orders that the Lucky Cat staff will bring to you. I might have found my "go-to" ramen place in PDX!
google avatar

Nathan T.

Yelp
The staffs, the owner, the service and the food were great. A bowl of Tonkotsu ramen with a choice of level of spicy from 1 to 5 with a side dish of Shrimp Tempura is out of this world. My wife and I often go there and my friends and my neighbor go there as well.
google avatar

Herrick L.

Yelp
Excellent ramen at a great price! I like to get their Tonkotsu ramen with level 3 or 4 spiciness and extra meat & veggies. The broth is definitely the highlight, which is paired with thin noodles (my preference). The meat is cut thin and nothing special, so I would recommend getting the extra meat as I do if you have a bigger appetite. The staff is also very friendly and quick to help with whatever you need. Recommended!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
The ramen here is great. Full stop. But if you're gluten free like me, you will be absolutely THRILLED with their GF version. I've tried others and have been sorely disappointed with all the stuff they have to take out to make it GF. Lucky Cat is the full experience, with only a couple of ingredients not available due to gluten. The broth is ridiculously flavorful. And it's actually very reasonably priced. The people are friendly, service is quick. I get the Tonkotsu. BTW, they are ranked #15 on Yelp's Best Ramen in America list.
google avatar

Dian K.

Yelp
I was reading some online article that rated this place as #1 ramen in Portland. Being a ramen fan, I HAD to try it. Well, as you can see from my rating, IMHO it was definitely not the best in Portland. Before I even tasted it, I could see that the egg was overcooked - no ooey gooey goodness it supposed to have. The broth doesn't have the depth that I'm looking for in a tonkotsu broth. The chasu is not bad, but sliced very thin. I do like the enoki they added. While I didn't order it, the guy next to me ordered the shrimp tempura and I could tell it's one of those frozen shrimp tempura they fried. Not one that was breaded and fried in house. They were busy but service was pretty good because it's counter seating so they're able to see if you need a water/tea refill or something else.
google avatar

Carmela G.

Yelp
I can't believe I have not added a review to this ramen place until now. I discovered this place when it was recognized as Yelp's 100 Best Places to Eat. They serve only 4 different kinds of ramen. I tried the tonkutso ramen and the veggie ramen. The veggie ramen here beats all of the of veggie ramen combined from all of the top ramen places in Portland. The price? All the these ramen costs $12! The servers are all kind and very good. Will keep coming back to this place.

Nathan M.

Yelp
Fast and kind service. Broth in the tonkotsu ramen was delicious and its nice they offer a 1-5 spice level on all their different ramen bowls.
google avatar

Tom E.

Yelp
I love this place! Delicious hot Asian style soup, hard working friendly ladies. Small menu but very efficient and tasty! Highly recommended.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Lunch was an afterthought as I was about to exit the grocery store, in the end I had one of the best bowl of ramen in Portland. The Tonkotsu is their top seller, but I went with the veggie (w/Kale noodles.) The broth was uniquely delicious, a heat level two was just right. Also ordered yummy tempura shrimp, the batter wasn't classic light and flakey, but still very good. And three pieces for $5 is a deal. Overall, great taste, value, friendliness, and quick execution.

Amanda L.

Yelp
This is one of my all time favorite ramen spots. The service is always very quick and the employees are the friendliest. It's great dinning in and taking to go. You can't go wrong with any choice, each ramen is delicious; and the broth is so rich and flavorful! They include 2 types of mushrooms and it is wonderful! They even have gluten free and vegetarian options. Plus they are only $12 a bowl so what a great deal!

Yelp
Been coming here for a long time. We love this place it is so good. But recently they switched to cheap plastic bowls. That are not even dishwasher save. Which means they are not safe enough to handle the temperature of the hot broth poured into them. I'll update my review when they get rid of plastic leaching bowls. "No, melamine is generally not considered safe for serving hot food as it can leach chemicals into the food, especially when heated to high temperatures; while it may be okay for serving warm food briefly, you should avoid using melamine dishes to serve very hot food"
