Where to Eat in Sunset Park’s Chinatown - Eater NY

"This Cantonese establishment remains on many lists for its fantastic barbecued meats. Take a group, eat family-style, and make sure to get the crispy-skinned roast pig, barbecued duck, filet fish with eggplant and bean curds, plus a vegetable option to balance out the meat." - Pelin Keskin

We had a fantastic lunch at this Cantonese restaurant! The staff was exceptionally friendly, making us feel welcome right away. The food, especially the roasted duck and honey roasted pork, was a hit with the whole family – flavorful, perfectly cooked, and clearly made with care. Even my kids couldn’t get enough of it! The prices were reasonable, adding to the overall great value. It’s a cozy spot with an inviting atmosphere and a menu that impresses. We'll definitely be back for more of their delicious offerings!

It’s been a while since we were here and a lot has changed. They closed down their huge basement dining area and the food could use a pick me up. Service is great thou. We had a good time since we pretty much the only customer booked for the whole dining room for a birthday. They are very accommodating and service is good enough. Food is good but I remember they used to be better. Sizzling beef should be sizzling but it barely any smoke. Rest of the food is up par but just not really good. The positive part is the fact the place is quieter and spacious than rest of the other places. We get to have a quiet and decent family dinner.

While this spot may not look like much from the outside it’s a solid choice for great food. We decided to explore the Sunset Park area, and while browsing reviews, menus and windows, we settled on Lucky eight. To be 100% honest there were at least three groups of women that went in before us, and to me that was an indication that the food must be good as they might traditionally be the ones preparing food in their homes, and if they want to eat here, so do I . The dining room is simple with a tank of lobsters and fish when you walk in, not all looking that spry but who would. We ordered slightly blindly off the lunch special menu, which was a great value. The egg drop soup was delicious and all of the other portions were quite large. Sweet-and-sour chicken scored, high marks, and there was some “boiled chicken” that came with a delicious ginger garlic sauce on the side that I can highly recommend. We always order snow pea leaves as they are often super fresh and delicious and that is exactly what we received here at Lucky eight. Another great choice if you want to get your greens in. I had wanted to order roasted pork ribs, but ended up with sweet-and-sour pork, which was good, but was heavy on the pineapple, I should be expected, my bad. The tea was on the table instantly and dark and delicious. The service was jovial and fun and efficient. If you were in the area and looking for a quick and easy lunch this is a great option.

Pretty tasty food. Our family just got back from Guangzhou and we were craving authentic Cantonese food— Lucky Eight hit the spot. We went there for dinner and the restaurant was 2/3 full and it was mostly large groups that came in. Food came fairly quickly. Everything tastes good albeit a tad on the saltier side. Pricing was moderate $48 for 4 dishes. Portion size was decent. Roast pork was a lot of food! We’d definitely come back. p.s. the salty peanuts we so yummy. My 4 year old wanted me to ask the waiter to box them up. I opted to put them in a napkin instead. :)

Long Live Lucky Eight. My family and I have been coming here for many moons and while adjusting to the new menu/management we were able to feel right at home. The key here is knowing what to order, and that can only be done with a little trial and error or by following our lead with the pictured dishes : ) This is authentic cuisine and not your typical take-out establishment. Be a little adventurous and enjoy the Michelin Recommended Restaurant.

Google
Michelin recommended resturant for 6 years running. Nice and friendly staff. AMAZING customer service. They have a menu with a picture of all their main dishes! I think I ordered wrong -- got the glass duck. It was interesting, but probably not what they're known for?... Would definitely come back! Edit: I've been here twice now. The food is fine. Didn't blow me away.

Definitely above average, price is beyond reasonable, one of the best bbq pork belly dish I’ve had. Friendly staff there too.

1. Good attentive service. 2. Good lunch prices 3. Most importantly GOOD food. I recommend their roast pig and roast duck. Peking pork chops or salt and pepper pork chops are very good dishes.

Yelp
Decided to try Lucky Eight after doing extensive research (aka 20 minutes) trying to find a place to grab dinner in Brooklyn's Chinatown neighborhood. Right away you feel as if you stepped into an authentic Chinese restaurant based on the clientele, menu offering, and decor. We ordered the Roast Pork appetizer and the Sichuan Marinade Crispy Duck entree with a side of rice. I enjoyed the Pork, especially when mixed with soy and the spicy sauce provided for the table. Lots of flavor and mostly tender meat. The duck left a bit to be desired. I enjoyed the leg pieces that came with it, but almost everything else was just skin and fat. Both items were quite greasy, and I couldn't help but notice a hint of something that didn't quite fit in - almost like a metallic taste. Aside from the food, make sure you specify red or white wine to the server - we ordered two glasses of Cabernet but were given Chardonnay. We let it slide given these were only $5. On that note, the whole meal was very cheap considering how much food was provided. We took a hefty to-go box with us, but unfortunately it did not keep very well and we tossed it soon after re-opening. Wish I could have loved this place, but unfortunately the Chinese at more modern establishments or at certain Manhattan Chinatown places has left me more satisfied. Maybe I'll come back and try the fried rice or stir-fry. I'm sure many patrons love Lucky Eight, and won't deny the authenticity, but it just may not be for me.

Yelp
I have heard a lot of good things about this place and came for the first time recently for dinner with some friends. It is your typical Chinese restaurant and they have tons of dishes to offer! What I love about this restaurant compared to most is that they have a PICTURE menu with an English description written. Very appreciative of this and great way to get more people to come. We had a family style dinner and ordered 7 dishes to share. We ordered the shrimp with mayo, pork chop with peking sauce, salt & pepper squid, 1/2 garlic fried chicken, steamed crab over sticky rice, steamed fish and a soup. I was very disappointed with the shrimp with mayo. They dipped the shrimp in a fried batter which is not something other restaurants usually do. They also used jumbo shrimps rather than the regular sized shrimps which left us having one per person. The steamed crab over sticky rice have to be my favorite dish of the night! We noticed a few tables also got this dish so this restaurant must be known for it. I haven't had this dish in such a long time and it was so good. It can be quite messy to eat but it is worth it! This dish takes a while to make so place your order for it as soon as you sit down and it'll be ready when your other dishes come out. We were contemplating on getting a fish and the waitress recommended a fish that can be made into 2 dishes. She used the head to make a watercress tofu soup and steamed the body of the fish. This didn't taste bad but definitely not the best. This came out to $38.95. All the other dishes tasted really good and no complaints there. At the end of your meal they give you oranges and a sweet soup!

Yelp
The food was excellent service was fast but the only thing that was bad rice it too hard but everything else they served taste delicious yum yum yum

Yelp
Wow. The roast pork and roast duck noodle soups are amazing ! The broth is so rich , the meats flavorful and the noodles perfect . The eggplant with garlic was delicious with onions and peppers. Very tasty! While we did not order any entree dishes, we observed all the beautiful food being served to the large tables with the lazy Susan's. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and delicious food!

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. It's no cheap generic takeout place. It's authentic and always consistently excellent. The dishes are well-crafted, and have fresh ingredients. We always order their special Pride of Lucky Eight and then try different things in their extensive menu.

Yelp
Lots of people were waiting to be seated at Lucky 8 when we arrived around 8:30 pm on a Saturday night but we were seated faster than I anticipated. Service is typical for Chinese restaurants and hot tea and sugary peanuts were waiting for us on the table. We ordered the "pride of lucky 8" - definitely don't miss out on this dish. It was a delicious concoction of abalone (tasted like octopus or squid) with Chinese leeks (crisp with mild flavor) and other vegetables, sprinkled with dried fish. Also tasty were the minced pork with eggplant and the Sichuan roasted duck. Prices aren't cheap but portions are massive, so we had leftovers to bring home. The Brooklyn Chinatown has a very different feel than the one in Manhattan so I recommend exploring a bit either before or after dinner at Lucky 8!

Yelp
One word: bark. The fried pork hanging in the window is the best thing you will ever eat

Yelp
Lucky Eight has been a long time family favorite. They had the best lunch deals and the most delicious foods for family style meals - they used to have set dishes for prices as low as $3. They've since changed the menu and now, each lunch dish is $7. Recently, lunch dishes has lacked a bit of flavor. Although it is still very appetizing, it's not as good and savory as it used to be but for the price of family style lunch, it's worth it! We had soup and 5 various types of foods and ended up paying only $36 for a family of five. I definitely recommend the beef with string beans and roasted pork!

Yelp
This is my go-to place for dinner with my family. We came here without a reservation on Father's Day and was seated immediately by the owner (who, I might add, is super friendly). There is also additional seating downstairs in the basement. Although this restaurant is much smaller compared to Pacificana, Park Asia and East Harbor, the quality of their food is better - and their prices are reasonable as well. I've tried everything from their lobster, lamb chops, steak, to their vegetarian dishes and have yet to be disappointed. Their BBQ (the meat that hangs from the window) is also delicious. Roast duck is my favorite.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! The place is clean but nothing fancy. We came for lunch, as they had $7 platters ($20 for 3?) On a Friday lunch, they were half full. Maybe it was an indication of how good they are? Server surprisingly spoke good English and was all smiles. Food came out quickly as well. I say this rarely, but all the dishes we ordered were delicious. Sure, not mindblowingly awesome but it's up there. Roast duck The meat was tender and flavorful, but the skin disappointingly not crispy. I've had better. Beef with string beans The beef was very soft, almost to the texture of fat :) Wintermelon and beancurd My favorite dish! Slices of wintermelon, with little squares of fish tofu in a light soy based sauce, or is it oyster sauce? Scallops with vegetable Buttery slivers of scallop with celery, mushroom, peas... Chicken with taro Tender cuts of boneless chicken in a savory sauce with taro. Yum! Fish with preserved vegetable The dish I least liked, just because the pieces of fish had tiny bones which made it difficult to eat.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! It's not your local greasy chinese take out place and it's also not Mr. Chows but it is authentic and solid chinese food. It's been around for decades, which must say something about the establishment. The service staff is friendly and attentive, the food comes quickly and the price is very responsible. This has been our go to place, when we crave good chinese food.

Yelp
Generous amount of food for their lunch special deals! Three dishes for only $19.50, with many many options, too! It was just us two plus the kid today and the food could have easily fed 3-4 adults, but that's okay, I love leftovers. Got here at noon and place was packed, we still managed to grab a 4 seater right before the bigger crowd rolled in. Right away a highchair and a set of plastic utensils and a bowl came for the baby before I even asked, nice. Even though the place was crammed, there was no rush in placing our order, great. All the dishes were legit, and had what it was suppose to have. Shrimp with Mixed Veggies had tons of shrimp, Braised Fish with Mustard Greens had plenty fish, Chicken in Black Pepper Honey Sauce was loaded with chunks of chicken, no where did I feel I was skimped out on such a great deal. This is the new spot for lunch and it beats City Cafe!

Yelp
Go get the Roast Pig. Hands down best Roast Pig I have ever tasted in my entire life. My family order a whole bunch of other dishes, but it was the whole Roasted Pig that was the main star of the entire meal. The pig was crispy, succulent, and overly fatty. Go get that pig. Oink Oink Oink!!
google avatar

Marianne D.

Yelp
Authentic food with great service. I love this restaurant for good quality, fairly priced food and it's definitely a spot to go to for special family occasions. I know some people aren't happy to be relegated to the basement but trust that the privacy and space you'll get is worthit.
google avatar

Yelp
Fried osmanthus noodles, braised fish topped with mustard greens, dried squid served with (!!!) jicama, fried intestines (don't knock it 'til you've tried it!), and absolutely delicious jellyfish. WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE? Food comes out incredibly fast, and the prices are eminently reasonable. Lucky Eight is easily in of my "Top Five" for great Cantonese dishes in the city.
google avatar

Lesie H.

Yelp
Favorite place of a friend, so we checked this place out. They only gave us a lunch special menu (noodle soups!); we asked for a full menu. 1. Octopus appetizer - cold and chewy. 2. Shrimp balls appetizer - crunchy and sweet dipping sauce. 3. Scallop shrimp paste with beans - scallops are huge! Salty... 4. Deep fried eggplants with shrimp - Crispy, hot, oily and salty.... I have to say the decor is nice. Service is standard and the food is overall... very salty. Not really for my taste. Maybe we'll order less salty dishes next time? Verdict: needs more rice!

Yelp
You know the food is good when you still come back after seeing a cockroach run across the wall. You also know you are at a Chinese establishment when they shuffle you to another table as if nothing happened. Yeah it was gross and I convulsed a bit, but I forgot all about it after the food came. Please don't let my first line deter you from trying this place out. -Their roast pork over rice is money. The pork can be a bit dry if you don't get the fatty part of the pig. Get the chicken and pork over rice...if I remember correctly it runs under $5. -Really good place to go for lunch. They give complimentary house soup. Their lunch special menu lures you in with the "order 3 dishes for under $18" This is a steal, especially if you are eating with 2 or more people. I like the vermicelli with spring melon and dried shrimp. Also the beef with string bean. The eggplant with garlic sauce is tasty. -There are so many dishes to try from, and it's tough for me to describe because I only know the Chinese names for them. -Lucky 8 can get crowded. Beware, if you are a smaller party they will sit you with strangers at a round table. Don't be rude and smile! Happy Chinese New Year!!!!!!

Yelp
Have you ever eaten at a Chinese restaurant and felt like you were getting the best quality vegetables available in the market? I know, this was a first for me as well! Just watching the staff cutting the green beans and snow peas, I wanted to ask where they got them from because they looked so fresh. I have never seen produce that fresh on the street or in any expensive stores. And, that is the produce you can expect to eat at Lucky Eight. From the outside, it looks like a whole-in-the-wall place with a BBQ take-away counter in the front. But, once you enter the interior is still small but very clean and more updated than you would expect. We did order an appetizer of the roast pork, it was decent but nothing amazing here. The items to order here are seafood and vegetables. They do have a photo menu for clueless *looking* folks like me. The photos do help when you want to see how the eel and conch dishes are actually prepared, to see if they are minced or what. There are some creative fusion items like Japanese BBQ Eel. Which they were sold out of on our visit. We opted for the steamed fish on top of eggplant with "tofu egg custard." The tofu was sliced and silky with chopped garlic oil drizzled over the top. Overall, this dish was healthy and light, but not as flavorful as you would assume. My favorite was Fried Fish Cakes with chopped Gai Lan. There was a strong ginger and garlic flavor and the gai lan was cooked perfectly, crunchy and not soggy. I am used to eating Korean fish cakes, which are often loaded with gluten and fillers- but, these fish cakes were something new and totally different to me. There were large pieces of fish, garlic, and scallion in every bite and it actually tasted like fish! By far something crave-worthy and worth another visit back. Next time we will order more vegetable dishes and noodle dishes. It was hard not to run up to the table that the staff was trimming the vegetables at, grab a handful and shove it into my purse, and take off running out the door.
google avatar

Carly C.

Yelp
This was a lot of food. I so badly wanted to enjoy this, but there was too much of a burnt taste for me. I eat less than half my food. The noodles looked so amazing, but didn't taste as good. My friend got a different type of noodle that looked similar and hers tasted good. The service wasn't great we were ignored quite a bit and they kept forgetting what we asked them for. I would be hesitant to go back there. They offer you free peanuts and tea while you eat.
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
I believe the number eight is a lucky omen in Chinese culture. So what the heck if right is lucky then the food must be decent. Have eaten here before and this time ordered some char sui which I find a little different from place to place. Yes there are many more options on menu but I love a good char sui with white rice. Hmmm and no soy give me plenty of ginger omg. The price was very good as compared to others and the cutting board where they chop meat was not covered in mounds of grease. That is a big turn off for me, I always look at the cutting board. I have seen some atrocious boards.
google avatar

Jenny C.

Yelp
Some of the food was good but some were not as good. Like the abalone with bak choy was not good and the vegetable with conch and squid. The house special fried rice was good one time but then bad at another time. The steamed crab on sticky rice was good and the lobster and black bean sauce steamed oyster was really good. The soup was too salty. The staffs were friendly and gave us tie to take pictures before serving. Overall the place is alright but i would order seperately and not go for their set menu. Hated the private room we were in though because next to us was another room but it was not blocked off by a wall but by a door like cover.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
It was me and my friend. We got their around 8pm. It was not packed, we quickly got seated. The tea is great. It s very spacious. The place is clean. Overall, 1st impression is great. We tried to order beef chow fun but they did not have so we got a different type of noodle which is understandable. The noodle we got was a thin noodle. It was great, flavor was good, it was well cooked. We also got fried duck which was good. They finish off with a orange. The bathroom is clean, which is something I like to see in restaurants. Overall, I would come back.

Yelp
Two stars only because 1 star is reserved for massive food poisoning/sickness or being punched in the face by a waiter, and really, it's a bit of an exaggeration to give someone one star. With that said, an average of 4 stars? Really? This is 8th Avenue Brooklyn, and this place is tolerated by the general food diners of this area? I say no. The food has minimal flavors; the spicy dishes are not spicy, and although a person with hypertension would appreciate the lack of sodium in the dishes, it's no bueno for anyone who has signed the social contact between themselves and restaurants; we expect food to be salted, and salted generously. That could be overlooked if the portions were generous; they are not. The portions are smaller than the pint boxes you'd get at a Chinese takeout place, and most of the dishes are loaded with broccoli. Don't bother with this place. Mediocre food, tiny portions. This is Chinatown, there are literally hundreds of restaurants doing the same thing as this place. Walk right past this location to those.
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Definitely an eclectic menu where you can try some authentic food. Ordering the seafood with lo mein and it was very good. Seems like it is a locals place so they must be doing something right. Good bang for your buck too. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Still delicious, still a great value but the most recent time we visited stir fried veggies were ridiculously expensive...$11 for some stir fried veggies? Meanwhile you can order delicious steak or pork chops for like 4 bucks more. We ordered the Chinese broccoli and they gave us nothing but stems, no leaves. What gives? Also they got one of our orders wrong. The waitress did give the chef the correct order that we wanted steamed tofu with our tofu casserole but they still ended up serving us the fried tofu. The waitress was very friendly and gracious and offered to bring it back, but we didn't want to give her a hard time. The HK style steak was tender and tasty though a bit sweet and overbearing unless you eat it with rice. The salt and pepper pork chops/ spare ribs were delicious! It is restaurants like this that really make me miss living in NY. 8th Avenue Brooklyn is such a gold mine. I noticed a lot more "Americans" (white people) at Lucky 8 the most recent time I went. I guess they are catching on to what a good restaurant it is. I am happy for the restaurant but hope it doesn't change the authentic food they serve or what a great value they are.

Yelp
This place has some of the tastiest dishes, at a great price. This is my "go to" place to go - when I'm hungry, and - in need of a satisfying lunch or dinner. I recently had a thanksgiving meal with my Chinese family and friends at this place. You will not be disappointed!

Connei M.

Yelp
My family and I visited this place every week since they opened. It used to be very good food, the food quality are very bad now with the high quality food price. the steak wasn't fresh at all. They used some kind heavy sauce to covered it and taste like something very funny. I got food poisoning. Very disappointed
google avatar

Casey R.

Yelp
Was trying to find china town in Brooklyn, read the reviews so we thought (let's give it a try) I wasn't impressed at all! The place was small, ok...that didn't bother me, I figured that, but after looking at the menu forever I finally ordered the things that sound familiar, roasted pig- this suppose to be there big hot item, I expected something with more flavor, I am Latina when we look a pig it's dripping in flavor, this lacked, basically tasted like some type of honey glaze. Someone on Yelp wrote to try the ribs, also wasn't impressed, I've had better at my local Chinese joint. The fried rice, also zero flavor, and we also got the garlic chicken, which I must say wasn't too bad. There are no dumplings, egg rolls, or any Americanized Chinese items on the menu. I guess I have to stick to joes Shanghai in Chinatown.... But I will say service was good, everyone is attentive to you, and the food comes out really fast! Maybe too damn fast.
google avatar

Albert W.

Yelp
8th ave is an enlightening experience for anyone who's never been to the Chinatown in Manhattan 20 years ago. The dishes I had at Lucky Eight had many of the local flavor you'll find in the area - not only the fish head or pig's stomach but also tiny preserved anchovies. The kimchee beef was my favorite, however the balance of meet to veggie ratio was off. Too much beef in kim chee dish, but too much green beans in the other beef (cube) dish. The smoked bacon fried rice is also awesome as the bacon isn't very fatty, but I did notice the wok wasn't very well cleaned as you can see the charcoal? stains on the rice.

Yelp
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants around the area! It's a lot smaller than their other competitors around the area, but they do offer upstairs and downstairs seating, as well as reservations for those busy holidays! My family and I love to come here to eat dinner. Food is always consistently good and when some of their dishes doesn't turn out to good they will offer to change it for us. Prices are reasonable and portions are of a good size. Their is so many food to choose from, so you can always come and try new things!! Definitely recommend for family and friends to come here for some family style dinner!
google avatar

Yelp
I LOVE this place! I feel like it has the BEST roast pig in all of NYC. Just filmed a video here and you'll find it on Youtube.com/offthegreatwall in a few days so check out all the awesome Chinese BBQ we ate. All the rest of their bbq is pretty good too! We got it all and the waitress actually told us that we ordered too much. Which if you think about it, is bad business for the restaurant :-) anyway, we ordered all the BBQs they had and indeed ate it all! Cause that's how we do things.
google avatar

Jing K.

Yelp
Very good Cantonese restaurant, a cut above the rest in the area. The dried squid and jicama stir fry is my favorite but all of their dishes are good. One of the best roast pork and duck places on 8th avenue.

Yelp
My experience with this place was not so great. Saturday night I met some friends here for dinner. I was the first one to arrive, so they asked me to get a table. I noticed it was busy. I asked the lady at the counter for a table for 5. The lady reply with "sorry we're booked for the night. No lore tables" i was like ok. I called my friend and told her. WhEn she got there and asked the same lady told her 10 minutes. Now i just felt uncomfortable there. Idk if it was because i was hispanic and my friend wasn't . But the whole night i just felt uncomfortable eating there.

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5.0 Service: 2.5/5.0 Value: 3.0/5.0 Decor: 3.0/5.0 Overall: 3.5/5.0 Solid smaller Chinese restaurant on a mildly competitive street with lots of options but only a few worth trying. Food quality is consistent and service is decent for what it is. The Cantonese BBQ here is good for the area, but not competitive with the Chinatown in the city. Depending on the dish you order (off the dinner menu), a case could be made that this is closer to four stars than three off the quality of the food.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
This is the kind of spot that was more popular in this neighborhood 10 years ago. As the neighborhood changed so did the restaurants. I come here for the BBQ meats, they throw in an extra box of offal once in a while, their wontons are the ones I grew up on. The beef chow fun is what I got far on, this place looks like it hasn't changed in a the last 10 or 20 years and that's a good thing.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Went to dinner with family while visiting area. The roast pork and the roast duck we started the meal with were superb. We had beef chow foon, pig intestines and Buddha's delight-every place is different -theirs was enoki mushroom, straw mushroom, Ming bean noodle, fried tofu and what seemed to be pickled mustard greens in a white sauce. This was one of the fest Chinese meals I have eaten in a while. Service was excellent and the wait staff was very attentive. Odd signal issues is about the only thing I found disagreeable, but maybe they would be five stars on other people's reviews f they create right away.
google avatar

Shirley G.

Yelp
If you're looking for some authentic Cantonese food with good service, this is the perfect place for you. I've tried quite a few dishes and all of the meals don't give you a heavy after-feel, which most chinese restaurants do. What I especially love is how service is great here. I am so used to somewhat rude services at authentic chinese restaurants. I am Chinese, but I don't speak that fluent of Chinese anymore, so I usually get this "you are a disgrace to our kind!!" type of aura from the waiters/waitresses. But here, they spoke to me in both languages and made me and my boyfriend (who is hispanic) feel very welcomed. I do think this place is a tad bit expensive for a typical chinese restaurant, but definitely worth your time to try it out. I know that I will be coming back some time again.l

Yelp
Decent restaurant, good food, reasonable prices. No frills, but then again, who goes to 8th Avenue for the fills right? If you want authentic Cantonese food, this is one of the better places to go.

Have been 10+ times and hands down some of the best Chinese food in the US and definitely better than NYC's Chinatown offerings. Very reasonably priced for the quality as well. Can't go wrong with the following: Ribs in Black Vinegar Sauce, Fried Eggplant, Roast Pork, Beef Chow-fun, and Shrimp w/ buns. This is not the place if you're looking for Americanized Chinese food.

Yelp
A seemingly small, easy to walk past Chinese restaurant is actually quite large (if you include the basement rooms), has creative and tasty dishes, and a rare combination of authenticate food and good service. We came here for a birthday celebration and they gave us 2 tables in a private room in the basement. We did the traditional fix course menu that included 8-9 rounds? of dishes shared among the table. The food was quite good with unique taste to a somewhat bland mix of dishes you can find in most larger banquet style Chinese restaurants. The service was on point both in terms of being cordial and actually being helpful in serving the dishes.

Yelp
Excellent food :) Preferential service :( Authentic HK-style cusine :) My BF and I are a mixed couple and he being Caucasian looking earned us the "expensive" foreigner menu. I was not happy, and so to make the waiter aware of my frustration, I made him bring me a "chinese" menu. So...heads up, if you go here and you have other than East-Asian looking peeps with you, make sure you ask for the "chinese" menu. The reason being? Its alot cheaper and also has authentic dishes. Not that the "expensive" menu didn't have authentic dishes, but it was way pricey! Anyhow...in the end, we had lots of leftovers, and I wanted him to pack the rice up too, and he wanted to charge me for that. Is that the policy? Does anyone know?

Yelp
SO DUCKING GOOD. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the neighborhood. Definitely get the baby pig! You won't regret it!

Yelp
Lucky I came here! I had something not on the menu, thanks to going with a real Chinese person. (Yes, I am a fake Chinese person, ABC.) We got squab garnished with some salt and lemon the side. The squab is expensive $12 for one with not that much meat. However, it is a good try for those who have never experienced it. The skin is super crispy and the meat is flavorful, somewhat of a cross between a duck and a chicken. Be sure to dip in the salt ( I know it looks like a lot, but dab it.) and also to squeeze the life out of that lemon! I also ordered Pride of Lucky 8, which is their signature dish. It is basically a medley of veggies and abalone - it includes some fried garlic strips, some shiitake mushrooms, scallions, and some leek. Since there are so many different ingredients, each bite is a different flavor - some taste super fresh, others are a little saltier, and some with more seafood - it's a surprise every time! The other thing I ordered was a pan-fried flounder dish. The fleshy part of the flounder is separated from the bones. The fleshy part is stir fried and laid on a bed of leafy vegetables. The bones are then deep fried and become a crunchy treat that you can eat. A great contrast to the stir fried fleshy part. This was a unique dish and also worth a try if you want to experience something different. My only complaint is that some of the veggies were not thoroughly washed and had some sand/soil in the stalk crevices. During dinner they give you complimentary oranges and a sweet soup. The oranges are your regular ol' oranges. The soup was awesome! It had some Chinese herbs in it which I don't know the names of. It tasted like a syrupy soup, try it! Overall, this is a traditional restaurant, but is definitely also a modern one - they really spice up traditional dishes and make it unique. Worth it to try authentic Chinese cuisine. Also, you don't need to know Chinese at all. Most to all of the dishes have English accompanied with the Chinese AND they have PICTURES! Yey!

Yelp
I'm not usually one to go all the way to Brooklyn for food, but Lucky 8 does wonders.. Lucky Eight is literally a hidden treasure, cheap-looking restaurant but the food here is one of the best Chinese in New York, no doubt about that (I'm indirectly throwing Flushing & Chinatown in there). Making the extra effort is quite worth it because it is quite a walk from the subway (at least for me) and is almost at the dead end of where all the markets, stores and bakeries are. My family and I have gone out for dinner here a few times and their food and service never seems to disappoint me. The people here are super laid-back and fun and to talk to. Somehow, I love their lo mein even though there is barely anything in there. Just plain noodles soaked in soy sauce. Their Young Chow fried rice is either a hit or miss, sometimes overcooked with too much water but when it's a hit, you'll never go anywhere for fried rice again; they add all the good stuff like barbecued pork, shrimp, peas and ham--can't ask for anymore! Also, get the steak--pure, Chinese-style steak at its best! Another great dish is the Hong Kong Style lobster. They actually have live seafood tanks in front so seafood is guaranteed fresh but I totally recommend getting this if you're in a group. Their "special" Pride of Lucky Eight is actually not great. For a Canto restaurant, this actually tasted like something you would find in the northern part of China. The heavy fried fish smell was really, really bad and it felt like they dropped a whole canister of salt on it. As always, super long, exhausting lines, kind of on par with the Serendipity 3 wait but so worth it once you're seated.

Yelp
Don't let the first floor tight area fool you! There's a lower level with lots of space! *Review based on dinner food only* Basically all Chinese restaurants serve the same dishes with just small alterations in flavor. This is my favorite place to go for family dinners. I'm not sure if it's just me but my lips are pretty sensitive. Whenever the food has MSG my lips gets dried as I'm eating the food and I would constantly need to apply lip balm. With this place, I can finish the entire meal without having dried lips! (For those who know me, my lip balm and I never part.) Their "GING THO GWUAT" which is sweet and sour fried pork chops. Here, they make it pretty well. Flavors are just right. Other places that I've tried either had too much vinegar or it was too sweet. Here, the pork chops are fried nicely, they're not soggy like elsewhere. I can really go on and go about their food. Overall, their food is a lot tastier than other places. You can taste the "WOK HAY" loll sorry can't really translate that one... I think... it means they use the right about of fire? or they tossed the food in the wok really well?? LOLL Some dishes that I highly recommend: GING THO GWUAT -- sweet and sour fried pork chops GUM WONG SHEUNG DON CHOW FAN -- egg fried rice mixed with golden raisins, scallions, salted fish, dried shrimp... very flavorful! SEE CHIEL OWW TAY GWUAT -- pan fry beef chops with black pepper sauce SHEUN YUN HEUNG GAI -- garlic chicken with fried garlic flakes (half or whole) Must try their crab, I do not know the name of it but it's just one big crab with eggy spicy orangy sauce served with mini buns, OMG dip the buns into the sauce!!! so yummy! The food are served quickly, nice and fresh. Service is decent. They change your plates ocassionally, give you wet napkins when needed. Servers do value customer opinions. You sit comfortably on the first floor or downstairs but I prefer downstairs epseically when you have a large party. They take reservations.

Yelp
We came at 5:30PM yesterday, and it was wack. We got the Roasted Pork over Rice, but it let us down. Not very fresh. We bought one dish just so my mother and I can share since it's our first time + we didn't know if it's good or not. Our server wasn't happy with that. Furthermore, since we sat down to eat the restaurant, we were forced to tip because he (our server) poured us water. Which we had to ask for. I wish we walked out as soon as we saw there was no customer in the restaurant at all. That's should have been our red flag to leave. We heard about this place from a Youtuber (FungBros). Total let down. I don't recommend.

Yelp
Had a last minute change of venue for a birthday party, due to our favorite restaurant, Pacificana, closing recently. Previously they had sent my parents to Lucky Eight when they were having a big wedding, so we knew it was good. The menu is a little challenging, and we were sad there were no dumplings, but the roast duck hanging in the window looked great so we went with that. The whole roast duck was really good, although typically salty. We also enjoyed the shrimp with mayonnaise which were perfectly fried. The chicken and Chinese broccoli was surprisingly the hit of the meal, as everything was cooked perfectly with the broccoli being especially good. A shrimp and tofu dish was okay, but a lot of tofu went to waste as it was mostly a big bowl of soft tofu with a sauce and some shrimp. The Roast Pork crispy noodles was fine, with more chinese brocolli. Fried rice was unexciting. Service itself was perfect, and food came out pretty quickly. The staff were helpful in navigating the menu. The location itself is really low key. It isn't a big restaurant. They seated 9 of us immediately. Leaving I noticed the Michelin recommended signs, and they note the noodle soup with roast duck as a star, as well as the roast pork, so I think we missed out on some of the best of their menu, but it worked out really well. I suspect they are a good lunch spot.

Yelp
I haven't had all the Cantonese restaurants in this neighborhood yet but I'm convinced this is one of the best Cantonese restaurants in New York. Having the barbecued meats almost made me question this place a little because I thought it was just another old siu mei/barbecued meats place, but boy am I glad I checked yelp. I know a lot of people are bad at reading Chinese but they have a pretty strong picture menu with good translations which is a huge plus and relieves the pressure when you're the only person in your party who can read Chinese. Will be back again and again and again and again.
