16 Best Old Fashioned Cocktails to Drink in NYC | Eater

"This large bar on the LES is one of those places where everyone feels welcome, thanks to the incredibly long bar, a pool table in the back, and a basement that hosts private parties and comedy shows during the week. Cocktails lean on brown spirits with drinks like a blackberry bourbon lemonade and an Old Fashioned that can be made with Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon." - Vox Creative

Lucky Jack's was a fun place to stop in for a drink. I stopped in a few minutes before they closed, so I can't really provide too much detail about the restaurant as a whole, but from the little bit I did see of it, I was very impressed. The staff was nice, the inside of the bar was cool, and I loved the disco ball! Lol. Would recommend!

You cant beat it to grab a drink at night in the area. I don’t want to spoil it but you can catch the best vibes in the area.

Google
Great happy hour! $2 off wells and $2 off drafts! Sadly they don’t carry high noons, but I tried a NUTRL raspberry and I love it! Bad tender is nice and let us sample some beers! Would be a 5 star is there were high noons!! Also: bathroom toilet could be more clean!!

Lucky Jack’s it’s a go to, cheap cocktails ($10-$13), very tasty beer on tap ($8). On Fridays it’s kinda crowded, but it has a really unique vibe to it. It has one shuffleboard table that you can use it for free. Sundays are usually empty, just the staff and their friends having some drinks. I really enjoyed this bar, I stayed at an airbnb in front of the bar, so I use to go a lot! Very kind staff. They have a nice selection of rum, whisky and bourbon. I recommend trying the expat, it was my favorite cocktail there, it has: mint, bourbon and lime. The also serve Guinness, blue point, and a lot of other local beers on tap.

Google
Only stopped by for a Bloody Mary. Underwhelming. Inside the bar was filled with what seemed like locals. Bartender friendly. We sat outside on a chilly day. Heat lamps present but no on. Tables free but not clean. The Bloody Mary itself left a lot to be desired. Olives, honestly, were horrible. Oh, and for the pleasure of disappointment for nearly $15. Get a bloody next store at Good Things. Hit the mark for less $$$

Nice drinks and people, very polite bartenders! Open until 04 at the morning "no matterwhat" they said😊

Had a refreshing cocktail at 3 in the afternoon while on vacation. Fun little place

Google
Layout/atmosphere *Two bars on first floor (one in front, one in back; each with a TV); high tables; original pinup style paintings; brick walls; downstairs another bar with high tables; picnic tables on sidewalk; covered outdoor structure in street Food/drink *Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade - Good; delicious; not too sweet *No food menu

Yelp
Cool dive(ish) bar and surprisingly spacious with a basement for events and comedy shows! Solid beer selection but would say cocktails are actually where it's at. Well made and reasonably priced. Would definitely return!

Yelp
I remember seeing the neon "bar" sign outside. They were open really late. I must have had a couple beers here. They had 2 full bars, but only one was being used. I don't remember them being a music venue, but I guess I did snap a couple photos! They accept credit cards and they have bathrooms in the back. There is also a bathroom in the front.

Yelp
The bartender's nice enough. We dipped in here on a Sunday afternoon when the Market on Delancey felt claustrophobic. Got a gin and tonic with the well gin and appreciate that their straws are compostable. Most of the other patrons (the loud ones on a game day thus they felt like "most of") were regulars, and there was only one woman who stared at my partner impolitely.

Yelp
Awesome beer bar and whiskey bar. Stopped in on a Saturday to catch a basketball game. Staff kindly accommodated my TV channel request. Initially had a beer but quickly switched over to whiskeys. About a dozen local craft beers on draft. I remember them having Bronx Brewery and KCBC amongst others. Superb selection of whiskeys. I had the Michter's Toasted Bourbon and one of the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof picks. Lots of allocated options here. Bartender was super patient and attentive. I believe there were two gender neutral restrooms.

Yelp
Yo. This place is the epitome of average. But a regular staple in our drinking joints. We've been coming here for what...probably five years? It's a great end of the night place. The bartenders are mostly attentive and the clientele isn't too annoying. They've raised prices during Covid. But who can blame them. I wouldn't go out of my way to spend the night here. Good place to meet up and then move. Or good place to end. They do have a secret bathroom in the back of the bar. Good way to avoid the long lines in front. Usually filled with people doing coke or couples being silly. It's kind of a hot mess, but whatever.

Yelp
Nice place to spend evening with your friends. It's not so loud. There are two bars, TVs, in every corner. A lot of booze. Service is fine. I don't know their menu. I didn't order anything, but it should be something.

Brian S.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in today. She asked for an Irish coffee. The female bartender told us that they didn't make that. She then said they had "cold brewed coffee", and my wife, not knowing any better, said she'd try that. It turned out to be cold black coffee. She asked for cream. They didn't have that either, so she couldn't drink it. I ordered a bottle of Bud. The bartender had a nasty attitude so I put a twenty on the bar and said we were done. I got $1 as change. I asked why we were being charged that for a bottle of Budweiser. I was told that my wife "couldn't return a cocktail." I left $1 as a tip. Never, ever again. There is nothing Irish about this place and the female bartender was as nasty as they come.
google avatar

Brandon F.

Yelp
The bartender pressed me for tips. He ignored me at first too and got nasty with me when I didn't want to tip. The place smells and the environment sucks. Don't go here, there's plenty of better bars in the area.

Yelp
Ok. This place is amazing. First off, if you are going to Russ & Daughters next door for breakfast, just go ahead and place your order for your sandwich and then sidle up to the bar (or the new outside dining spaces NYC is doing) and grab yourself a breakfast cocktail. Particularly, the Nitro Cold Brew Irish Coffee and the Tuscan Rickey are delicious. And cocktails in NYC that aren't $18+? Sold. Let's also talk about our bartender, Bronson. The best kind of character. Cool, full of great stories, personable, and been working here for over five years. Which is pretty wild for NYC bartenders. No idea why this place only has 3.5 stars as of this setting, because this is a great experience.

Lisa H.

Yelp
The bartender in the back section of the bar could barely step away from a conversation/ personalized palm reading for a second to do their actual job and serve patrons.

Yelp
Ugh! I hate writing bad reviews but I feel the need to warn. We loved the vibe, the bartenders, the music everything - except that they upsold us from beer to a pitcher of their specialty cocktail (which there's no shame in up selling, that's fine!!). The problem was there was definitely little to no booze in the whole pitcher of what turned out to be Arnold Palmer. We were really disappointed that they would recommend it, AND the waiter we had said they had sold over 75 pitchers that day. To me that screams ripoff, and I walked out feeling pretty mislead. Ultimately, I would recommend going with a beer or shot, something that can't be diluted. But I personally, will not be returning.

Yelp
Lucky's Jack in NYC is a chill ass bar which cool ass bartenders. If you are waiting for Russ and Daughters, do yourself the favor and come here for a quick drink. My friend and I came here to have a quick drink before we went to Russ and Daughters Café next door for lunch and had a wonderful time! We walked in and were greeted right away; instantly felt a homey and cozy vibe feel once we walked in. We sat at the bar and admired the décor and design in the bar. There is also more seating in the back. The bartender was chill and gave us a drink menu to look over. We ordered simple drinks and enjoyed our time people watching. Everyone was very friendly here and the service was great. My drink was delicious and stiff, just the way I like it. You will see many locals that come here to enjoy their evening here. They have everything from cocktails, beers on draft, Scotch, Irish, American, and Bourbon, as well as regional brews. They have TVs around the bar for patrons! Also, they allow you to bring food inside. If you are interested in hosting a party or a graduation party, this is the perfect place to do it! Make sure you ask about their private lounge! This is a great place to just stop in when you need a little "pick-me-up"!

Yelp
Lucky Jack's is a solid LES choice for any weeknight. The bar has a homey feel and the brick is cozy. There is never too many people here during the week, which allows good conversation and I never feel like I'm screaming over loud music. I enjoy standing or sitting on a stool near the window- which you can open and people watching. The bartenders have always been very attentive and nice. I've gotten a few of the cocktails. The Blueberry bourbon lemonade is my favorite. Nothing too wild as far as cocktail selection. I mostly come here for the low-key neighboorhood vibe. (Keep in mind I've never been here on a Friday or Saturday night.) I also recommend their free comedy shows downstairs- I want to say it happens on Wednesdays, but I could be wrong. I've seen some really great shows, and ones that needed a bit more practice, but hey- that's the beauty of free comedy- you never know what you are going to get. 4/5

Yelp
WORST BAR I'VE EVER BEEN TOO. We visited from California and had a New Yorker show us around. Note we're all Asian. We showed them our ID's and the bartender singled out the only New Yorker, and singled him out for his REAL ID. Mind you our friend LIVES in New York, yet they assumed that his ID was fake. They even swiped his ID and they said it went through, but the bartender claimed that there are swipeable fakes. Our New Yorker friend was even willing to show the bartender their passport card, but the bartenders turned us away explicitly because we were the only group of Asians in a densely populated white bar. I advise against going to this establishment especially if you are Asian, because they will discriminate against you.

Yelp
yay ! I am a fan! My cousin recommended this bar and service was great aka Chris the bartender. I order one of the special "Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade" good and strong! Must try :)

Tim S.

Yelp
Had a horrible experience here last Saturday afternoon. It was my first visit, and the place was relatively quiet. The bartender on duty was a beast of a woman, possibly a man, and was thoroughly and utterly nasty and unpleasant. Not sure why the owners of this bar would hire such a horrible person to interact with the public. With so many other bars out there, you might want to take a pass on this one.

Yelp
Went here the other night and had a blast! Cocktails are awesome and the ambience is perfect! Super chill and staff is friendly! I work in the area so this will be my go to for sure!

Max R.

Yelp
Go to neighborhood bar. Can be both a chill vibe and a packed house depending on the time of day

Ryan R.

Yelp
The person with the glasses is cute :) so good and sassy. And the guy with the fun accent - love him! Knowledgeable and good drinks. Great Guinness pours

Stephen M.

Yelp
Great place, definitely no pool table tho. This one bartender was very great too, very nice
google avatar

Yelp
While waiting for our table to be ready at Russ and daughters, we stumbled into Lucky Jack's (right next door). We had the blueberry bourbon lemonade and it was delicious ($10). Nice little neighborhood-y place and I do plan to come back during our trip

Yelp
Really enjoyable atmosphere and drinks, and very kind owners and bartender in this otherwise unassuming, overlooked bar.

Yelp
Jack sure is lucky because this place should've gone out of business. I went to Lucky Jack's on a Saturday night around 10pm. It was moderately busy, and there was plenty of room to move around. The music was subpar. I think the DJ compiled a list of songs that your parents thought were "hip" and then he/she played the worst parts of each song. Service at both the upstairs and downstairs bars was horrendous. I ordered a margarita (downstairs) and was simply told "no" before the bartender turned to the person next to me and took her order. I went upstairs and stood at the bar. I patiently waited for the bartender to finish serving a couple at the end of the bar. He walked over, I ordered a cocktail off the menu, and he walked away without acknowledging my order and proceeded to serve a group further down the bar. I guess my money has no place at Lucky Jack's.
google avatar

Carol M.

Yelp
This bar is da bomb! We went here as we waited for our table to be ready at Russ and Daughters cafe next door. Bronson was attentive and plays the best tunes, we could have stayed there all day! Favorite bar in the city! Thank you!

Yelp
There are no shortage of bars in Lower East Side, and some are more tolerable than others. Lucky Jack's seems to be a place that's low key and easy, which is right up my alley. I popped in for a quick drink before dinner at Sauce down the way. A Friday night at 8:30 was easy enough to grab a seat at the bar, was served fast, and didn't have to step over loud drunk people en route to the bar. No idea if it gets crackin' later in the night, but for the early part of the evening, it was a nice alternative to some of the louder spots in the surrounding area. I know they do concerts and comedy nights, so I imagine it gets a bit more wild than the night I was there. But for a first encounter, a pretty great time.

Yelp
Get shots here. Whiskey shots. The bartenders know their stuff, and the selection is fantastic. Dark, intimate decor with exposed brick walls is very conducive to date nights or girls nights.

Yelp
Really love this place. Can't believe I've never been here till now. I'm on Orchard at least twice a week and I've never been in here; I really regret that. There's no lack of places to have a drink in this area--Pianos, Hair of the Dog, Arlene's Grocery, etc. Lucky Jack's feels special though from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out. LJ's has an old school brick and wood feel to it. Right away you'll notice the awesome curved bar. Yes even the bar-top has personality here. Behind the bar you'll note plenty bottles of good bourbon, scotch, and whiskey. I noticed a bottle of Weller 12--mmmmmmmm. LJ's certainly lives up to being a whiskey and beer bar. I came here for a book launch event, which was held in the basement. Not sure if the basement is open on the regular, but it's a really great awesome event space. It's spacious for about 100 people (guesstimating here) and has it's own bar. While here I enjoyed a good beer and also had an Old Fashioned. Both were excellent. I hate a bad Old Fashioned, but this was pretty good. Go to Lucky Jack's if you want a bar with personality, if you want a good beer, if you want some good whiskey, or if you want a good event space.

Yelp
I came to this place for the Wednesday comedy night, which is held in a small room downstairs. The comedians are funny enough and the cosy atmosphere seems ideal for such an event. Just wish they served drinks downstairs though. They also have a shuffleboard in the back - I have been seeing this more and more and am glad the trend is catching on.

Yelp
Just recently moved to the hood and discovered this gem Cool place, great bartenders nestled off the beat n path of LES. Love this place

Yelp
Came here for pride weekend and had my birthday in their downstairs lounge. The lounge is pretty big and holds a lot of people! Great spot to host an event. It was easy to reserve a table downstairs, free of charge. However, yelp says you get a champagne bottle if you make a birthday reservation but that isn't true. (Waiting on my champagne) The bartender at the lounge was pretty cool, upstairs they have like 2 different bars one that serves frozen margaritas which are delicious. They had a live DJ on Saturday, but I was disappointed because the music was alright but it didn't make you want to get up and dance. I didn't hear any current music, it was more like old school hits. The bar wasn't crowded at all, which was surprising because I figured people wanted to go out for pride weekend.

Hailey G.

Yelp
Trashhhhhhh would rate 0 stars if I could.... kicked us out bc one person brought a white claw, and didn't rush to throw it out.... disgusting and was dead but were still rude????
google avatar

Debra E.

Yelp
Why I liked the bar. It offered a lot of options. No cover..walked right in no problems, there were a lot of hooks to hang your jackets. Oh yeah and I read a sign that said HH from 12-8! It was massive and had 2 bars upstairs and downstairs and a pool table. A little bit of a fratty crowd but the kids were behaving and I didn't get a drink spilled on me. Nor kick anyone in the shins, lucky for them because I had some heeled boots on me. The DJ played a lot of rap and hip-hop and that got people to dance..which was mainly going on downstairs. They even had bar video games.. "whats the difference". They had a IPA, Blue Moon, Stella and Hooegaarden..no complaints there for me. I liked downstairs you could sit and lounge around..there was also a breeze throughout the upstairs and I was never too hot or too cold.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a yelp find for me! Went for a comedy show that was listed under events. Cool bar, Its like....long......lol Huge bar, TV's, a few high tables off to the side. Pin up art on the walls, which you already know.....I LOVE! Comedy show was downstairs, in kind of like a "basement" type room with a small bar. Plenty of chairs for a not so big space. We were late, so up to the empty second row we go....lol We saw "is that you Gandhi?", great comedy show! Good drinks, average price 10 or 11 bucks. Bartender was friendly. This is a pretty cool spot, would def come back!
google avatar

Karry L.

Yelp
came here for a group happy hour on a Thursday night, good selection of drafts and beers, some cocktails, i had a whiskey based drink it was overtly sweet! bar is pretty spacious, comfortable w seating and standing rooms, some seating in the back for larger group, even though it's in the heart of LES, it's definitely not a hipster, at least for the weekday, don't know how the scene will be like on weekends and friday nights. bartender is friendly and quick!
google avatar

Jamie M.

Yelp
AWFUL Bartenders! Avoid this place at all costs. They clearly dont care about new customers, so dont waste your time. *****My expereince below****** Told bartender #1 Ill take two drink and he said in a minute. Waited about 5 mins before I realized he wasnt coming back. He served couple people he seemd to know. Proceeded to the back bar. We were there for a bday party so I went up to buy my two drinks and then 7 shots - I tipped bartender #2 $6 on a $45 round. Lastly - went to get the second round from bartender #2 and he wouldn't come over for 10+ mins - so I went to him and I asked him what the problem was: he said "When you leave a $6 tip on a $45 shots this is what happens". We all closed out our tabs and left him $0 tips.

Yelp
Last night we went out to celebrate my wife's birthday with a few of our family members. We walked into the bar and the bar tender (tall white male) looked her in the eye and then completely denied her service and ignored her. Next, he poured another white male a drink standing next to us. Considering the possibility that maybe he just didn't hear her saying excuse me 5 or 6 times, she politely touched his hand to get his attention. He then jerked his hand from her and hit her in the chest with 2 of his fingers with excessive force 3 times. Naturally all 6 of us were outraged. Security came over to see what was going on and from the beginning one guard named Cesar took the side of the bar tender and out all of us out. He refused to give us his name even after we called the NYPD. We will be following up with a lawsuit on this and will keep you all updated. No man should ever put his hands on a woman.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
I came here for a comedy show with a date. We started with drinks upstairs and they were okay. Not the best beer selection in the universe, but if I was still drinking bourbon they had a nice list of that. The basement area where the comedy show was, was pretty nice but kind of cold. I will admit that I had my winter jacket on for half the set. I get that it's an older building AND a basement, but it was slightly uncomfortable. I definitely enjoyed my time here. I like that they have a bar upstairs but also one in the space downstairs when they have shows. Makes the whole experience better (plus, I suppose having drunk people walk up and down stairs to get drinks doesn't make any sense.) Would definitely return if I got the chance!

Yelp
I thought this was a dive, but guess what - not that divey. Came here the night before Sandy hit and hung out with M and A. Had loads of Bloody Maria and that's all I can say, but I know I had a good time.

Yelp
I hosted my husband's birthday here and there literally could not have been a more perfect spot. We rented the private downstairs room, which does NOT require a room fee, just a pretty reasonable bar minimum, something that is pretty near impossible to find in this city. Trust me, I looked. Very hard to find a private room that can hold over 75 people that doesn't want to charge you $3k/hour. The manager, Zach, was so gracious and accommodating. There was a lot of customization required for the festivities and he gave me full access to the space, was able to help with AV, food, everything we needed. They do not serve food, so we were allowed to order in whatever we wanted, another bonus. Then there are the drinks, which are out of this world. Lucky Jack's has a killer whiskey list, but also knows how to make a cocktail. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. I don't know how they have stayed under the radar for so long, it is the best venue for hosting a private party in the city.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
I came here specifically for the free Wednesday night comedy show in the basement known as "Ghandi Is That You?" A small room with uncomfortable folding chairs, it was nevertheless funny. Among others, I enjoyed Judah Friedlander (NBC's 30 Rock), and Django Gold (one of Colbert's writers). My favorite was Comedy Central's Sean Patton. He's like a Belushi/Jack Black hybrid whose crazyman routine made my sides ache. There's no drink minimum and you can bring your own food. I probably could've smuggled in a bottle if I'd desired to. Upstairs, the bar itself was ok, nothing out of the ordinary for NYC. I'd return, but probably only on a Wednesday.

Yelp
Walking LES and decided on Lucky Jack's. The bartender was friendly and helpful on recommendation of a beer!!! It was great called wolf pub ipa. I had 3 lol. Also there was a collector watch showing at the same time, no pun intended.

Adrienne C.

Yelp
Great place for cocktails! Service and drinks by Bronson were five stars. We stopped on mid-day Saturday, sat outside, ordered food from next door. Their Tuscan Rickey is the best Rickey I've had (I don't typically like rockets and ordered two because they were so delicious). My husband ordered the nitro cold brew which has whiskey in it (no dairy) and it was fantastic!! This is a regulars hangout spot, not touristy, not college bar scene. Definitely recommend stopping in if you're in the area or making an out of the way spot. Outdoor and indoor dining available.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
This place has the best DJ! He played a variety of songs and took our multiple requests. It was also not crowded on the dance floor so you don't have to worry about feeling cramped. So much fun for a girls night! And the bartenders were friendly, drinks were great!!!!
google avatar

Monique M.

Yelp
This is an absolute gem in the city! As part of a meet-up event, myself and a group of 6 ladies came here for some after-work/happy hour fun and a FREE comedy show. The décor is nice, reminds me of colonial times. The crowd and ambience features a mature crowd of mostly late 20s-30s. But the best of it all, is the music! The music is so awesome! It was a nice mix of old-school R&B and pop. I wanted to get up and bust-a-move but I couldn't because it was so packed (ha!). The comedy show was also superb, but it didn't start at the time indicated online, which was 7:30pm. In fact, they had 2 shows, 1 at 6pm and another at 8:30pm. I could only stay for 3 comedians, but they were very good nonetheless. I will be returning and recommend anyone to visit.
google avatar

Annie Y.

Yelp
Came here for a birthday party last night and really enjoyed the atmosphere! They let us have the entire room downstairs, and it was really spacious. I appreciated the couches, coat racks, private bathrooms, and personal bartenders. You can also bring your own music playlist for them to plug in and play. It's an ideal place for a birthday party if you have a large crowd and either want to be able to hear each other while talking or just need a big enough dance floor. The bartenders are also really nice!

D K.

Yelp
Didn't want to be that person leaving a poor review during a pandemic but they dilute their spirits and their prices do not reflect the water-down products they serve. Avoid shots and neat pours. Stick to beer. Ask for an itemized receipt.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Really nice place with really friendly staff! I had so much fun here. I am never know this area but if I were this could easily become a go to for me. Drinks are good and reasonably priced.

Yelp
Went on a Friday post-work. Place is a quiet meet but gets slowly louder by 9pm. $2 off menu price for drinks for Happy Hour was nice. Had the Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade -- was ok but not great. Fair for $8 HH. The bartender Jade is pretty nice and plays a good spotify mix of 80s and 90s music. So was the guy who came after her on the shift change. Crowd is locals/non touristy.
