The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia - Eater

"In the inner city alone, there are many thrilling Chinese restaurants. There’s the award-winning glamour of Mr. Wong; fiery, wok-tossed Hunan food at the Chairman; remixed Yunnanese noodles at Yunn; and specialties from Wuhan at Grain Gallery. But there’s nothing else quite like Lucky Kwong in South Eveleigh. The restaurant combines Kylie Kwong’s Cantonese cooking with Indigenous ingredients grown by Clarence Slockee, a Cudgenburra and Bundjalung educator who oversees the precinct’s gardens. Kwong’s spanner crab and prawn dumplings with Sichuan chile dressing are garnished with his bush mint, and he’s collected budding Geraldton wax for the soda Lucky Kwong created with Matt Whiley from neighboring bar Re (where bartenders cleverly transform the restaurant’s leftover rice into sake)." - Lee Tran Lam

Limited lunch menu available and for sure the standout dish was the home styled fried eggs, so good, spicy and packed with flavour and beautiful yummy yolk. The pork belly pancakes were also good. Sadly there were no dumplings 🥟 which is the signature dish. Kylie was at the counter doing final check of each dish which was pretty awesome.

We visited Lucky Kwong and are absolutely blown away by how incredible the food and service is. I particularly love the use of fresh native ingredients that are so well balanced in the dishes. Everything we ordered was incredible. A stand out for me was the spanner crab dumpling. Highly recommend visiting!

Came to LK with my in-laws and husband for a Monday lunch. The space is so cool (the area and the restaurant itself). Ordering happens at the table via an app but the staff are more than happy to help out. Because there were 4 of us, we ordered quite a few dishes. The standout was easily the prawn dumpling dish (we ordered it again after finishing the first). We also loved the tofu dish because it had a unique black bean and chili sauce. Overall the meal was good, but some of the dishes tasted very similar because the sauces repeat a bit. I would keep that in mind when ordering!

I’m still not over this meal. Haven’t had original, fresh food bursting with flavors like this in a while! Everything was so beautifully balanced. The respect and love for traditional Cantonese food was evident, but the added element of using native Australian ingredients gives it the twist that we didn’t know we needed. To see chef Kylie Kwong in the kitchen is an added bonus :)

Wontons and steamed dumplings are so delish. The textures and flavors showcased the chef's skill, and the cozy ambiance and quick service make it a great spot for a satisfying lunch.

Lovely lunch in super cool new build out complex (old metal works factories). Food is very tasty and super veggie fresh. The dumplings are the highlight. It was spanner crab and prawn when we went. I would recommend getting the fried egg and fried rice as the base sauce was a bit repetitive for the dumplings and hokkien noodles. Everything is auto order so it’s a quick meal. Staff nice and friendly. The restaurant space is cool industrial.

We were looking forward to trying Lucky Kwong as we were fans of Billy Kwong back in the day. While the place itself is interesting and great to see the kitchen in the open, it did feel a bit cold (temperature wise but mostly vibe wise). The food was also a bit unusual, with dumplings and hokkien noodles drowning in sauce (no wok hey). The fried eggs were great, but overall was disappointed in the value for money for the dishes. Service seemed a bit detached as we ordered and paid using an app and left within an alloted hour.

Lucky Kwong is an amazing food experience. Kylie is a masterful chef (as we all already know) who delivers constantly. The food is outstanding, well balanced and really good value. Ordering is made very easy, the service is great and the food is ready in minutes. I'll gladly return as often as I possibly can.
