A 'Crazy Rich Asians' Food Guide to Singapore

"Nick’s over-bearing mother Eleanor dismisses her son’s claims that a Holland Village stall serves good rojak, a traditional spicy fruit salad. 'Nonsense! Everyone knows that the only place to go for rojak is that stall on the top floor of Lucky Plaza,' she exclaims." - Kenneth Goh

It is one of my favourite fun places to shop in Singapore. There are no brand name outlets, but all the small outlets sell almost everything. The food hall downstairs if great for a good tasty meal with lots of Philippine options.

It is a very interesting mall. On basement I found souvenirs in a very good price. It is 7floors. Lots of food. …

This review is about this food stall inside lucky plaza. I recently visited this food stall in the basement of Lucky Plaza and was disappointed with my experience, particularly regarding their pricing and customer service. The food stall has prices clearly posted on the wall, which I expected to be honored. I ordered two vegetables and one fish, with a posted price of $7.00. However, when I went to pay, the cashier attempted to charge me $8.40. Confused, I asked why, but instead of receiving an explanation, the cashier started speaking loudly in Mandarin. My friend, who ordered right after me, got two meats and one vegetable was charged exactly what was posted—$5.60. When I questioned the price difference, the cashier spoke in Mandarin to my friend, who told her he didn’t understand. She then turned to another worker, who also spoke Mandarin but struggled with English. At no point did I receive a clear explanation, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being overcharged for no reason. The lack of transparency and poor communication left a bad impression. Whether it was a mistake or something else, the situation made me feel like I was being cheated. I can’t recommend this place based on my experience.

Big space with lots of preloved clothing. No fitting room is a hassle. If you look long enough, you may find what you want.

Lucky plaza is quite an interesting mall. It has a few grocery shops that sell products from Philippines, beauty salons, money exchange, employment agencies, clothing and foot ware stores. Lots of busy eateries especially Indonesian restaurants that are packed around lunch time. One snack shop that had a long line- serving desserts (cash only though) and another that had fried hot food, both are stand alone shops that aren't part of the food court. Floors are all accessible through escalators and elevators. If you are looking for snacks and food items from the Philippines then this is probably the place to go to.

When we would go to Singapore in the Late 80s/ Early 90s we would always visit this Mall. It has not changed much and now has a number of Philippine Food Stores like Andok's, Jolibee, Tapa King. Lots of Filipinos here, specially during Sundays so it will feel like home.

This is the mall where the Filipino community hangs out during the weekend. Lots of small stores and restaurants along the bargain and affordable range. The exact opposite if the Ion Orchard across the street. It a very festive and busy place during the weekends. This is where workers would avail of money transmittal or oversea package delivery services go to as there are lots of shops catering to this market in the mall.

For the price conscious bargain hunters at Orchard road: Lucky Plaza has lower to mid-range options. On the higher floors there are thrift stores selling gently used clothings. Don't forget the small food court on the top floor. Also an interesting selection of Filipino shops, eateries and bakery serving authentic Filipino bakes and desserts.

Yelp
Wheeeeee! I'm just along for the ride. While visiting friends in town, I tagged along while they were running errands. This is not a far walk from their beautiful apartment, but it's a sweaty one, so no judgement if you take a public buses (the transportation system in the city is amazing). Inside, I realized that the majority of shops are Filipino-friendly. While the majority of shopping plazas on Orchard are high end, this one is more budget friendly and perhaps I'm wrong, but geared towards the working folks. None the less, it was fun to poke around the shops without actually buying anything. I'm just here to people watch, and that was fun.

Yelp
This place is awesome, esp on Sundays ;) It's pretty much Filipino everything here. Shopping, food, banking, everything except a quicky wedding chapel. It's definitely on the lower end of the spectrum as far as luxury malls go but it's still an interesting place to shop, again, esp on Sundays ;)

Yelp
At Orchard Road has many shopping center. But this one is crazy. I visited this plaza because is shoulder to shoulder shopping center. I am just curious. After 15 minutes walking. You realize most of the store inside is Philippine related. Including the restaurant and fast food. Then I paid attention to who is actually shop here. Mostly the Philippino. This plaza includes permit for driver license, the identification card, work permit can be found here. Beaty salon and other services can be found here. I would said this plaza full of Philippine store. It is a sanctuary for the Philippino. The electronic store also carries the Philippine good.

Yelp
This place was sooo overwhelming for me. I read TripAdvisor reviews that there was cheap luggages for sale here so I wanted to take a look. But within minutes of being inside I did not feel safe at all. For one, it was super crowded - easy to get pickpocketed. Two, there were shady looking guys just standing around. The shops also seemed suspicious. Idk maybe I was just too paranoid being a tourist in what seemed like a place where locals frequent. Left after ten minutes of looking around. But I did get to buy a travel pillow for $8 at a store that I've seen in hk! There was also a mini McDonald's truck right outside lucky plaza. Only sold desserts. Some of them seemed interesting. I got a lychee soft serve!

Yelp
Highlight: Tucked right in the middle of glitzy Orchard Road malls, this is Filipino mall that services most money sending, Filipino food, cheap touristy stuff and oh yeah, if you're interested in the prostitution phenomenon of Singapore, then you come here at night. Touristy stuff: If you're needing your quick fix of cheap key chains, t shirts, mugs, photo frames, and fast touristy stuff for last min pals at home you promised them stuff, then this is a good place to duck into on your swanky stroll down Orchard Road. I recommend sticking to the outdoor stalls if you're not comfortable with sketchy places. Singapore in general is not a sketchy country at all, but Lucky Plaza makes you think twice. I came here at about 11 p.m. and that was when the mall was closing down and I def did not want to be in that mall alone without my husband. You can shirts as cheap as 3 for 10$ or 2 for 15$ depending on color and quality. I got my touristy tapestry thing for 4$. They accept cash only around here. Food: I heard the filipino food here is excellent b/c it services many foreign workers like maids who work here, so the food is the most authentic central for them. Prostitutes: Yep, Orchard Towers and Lucky Plaza are your go-to's if you're in this area. The other parts are Geylang where there are legal brothels. Prostitution is legal in Singapore, strange for a conservative country that bans porn, but soliciting on the streets is illegal, so people still get arrested for streetwalking. But if you hang around Lucky Plaza at around 10 p.m. esp Sundays when it is off-days for maids, you'll find your share of "women who looking like you're going clubbing". That's right- think 7 inch heels, tiny skirts, long hair extensions, lots of make up and just hanging around the streets or in the mall itself late at night who keep coming up to men asking for drinks and dates. I think prices are 40$-160$ depending on your girl. If you're wandering the closing mall, then you'll pairs of women just strutting around.

Yelp
The irony of a cheap "changi" (market) tucked within the vicinity of the glitz and glam of high end Orchard stores is crazy! The only reason why we even heard of this place is because the manager at Max's restaurant recommended that we go here for our souvenirs and money exchange. Takes: Our sentiment with Singapore is that it's very expensive! With the conversion rate of USD to SGD, it's almost 1:1. Finding a place like Lucky Plaza was surprising...and not good for our limited baggage allowance! They sell everything from fish skin chips, chocolates, t-shirts, key chains, purses, etc. You will also find Filipino restaurants (I.e. Jollibee) and snacks here too! Prices: Most SG T-shirts are 5 for $10. Longchamp look alikes with Singapore text on them go for 5 for $10. Keychains are 6 for $10. This is compared to one item alone could be at least $5-$10+. Cash only. There are some stalls that accept card, but generally, you're safer with cash. Service: Self-service. Items displayed are the ones they have in stock. Inventory is a hit or miss. T shirt sizes range from XS-XXL. Employees will guide you to find what you're looking for; however, you do need to ask since they won't offer their assistance. Safety: Large number of people go here so just with any crowded place, be vigilant of any pick pocketing. Bottom line: Go here for your cheap Singapore souvenir or Filipino cravings fix!

Yelp
Like many malls developed by the Far East Group (eg. Far East Plaza on Scotts or Far East Shopping Centre on Orchard near Isetan), Lucky Plaza is among the oldest, least visually attractive, and most downmarket shopping malls in its neighbourhood. The mall is more functional than aspirational. No luxury shops here (except for some reason there are lots of jewellery stores), or premium eateries. But, unlike other malls on Orchard Road, you can find cheaper goods (eg. fake branded deodorants and fragrances, footwear, luggage, souvenir gifts), or unusual stores (eg. CPAP machines for sleep apnea, a tailor specialising on alterations for Shanghai Tang across the street). Lots of Filipina domestic helpers meet here on Sundays, so you'll find stores doing remittances to the Phil, or Pinoy eateries.

Yelp
Chinatown, Little India, and Arab street. The Filipino community may not have something as big as a town or a street, but if you're looking to experience their culture, Lucky Plaza is the next best thing. Although there are some stores here who sell local products-typically found almost everywhere in Singapore, a majority of the shops here are all Filipino. Located along Orchard Road, Lucky Plaza houses a majority of business manned by Filipinos. Aside from the remittance centres and household help agencies, a variety of stores selling Filipino products and a variety of food establishments serving home-cooked Filipino cuisines can be found here. My reason for coming here is more of remittance duties because majority of remittance centres offer bank to bank transfers. I rarely shop here mainly because the products are too expensive for me to purchase (import-export taxes). But if I have some cash to spare, I splurge on some local snacks like "boy bawang" (fried dried corn kernels flavoured with garlic and cheese). I can't say that Lucky Plaza is one of the best places to shop, because it's not. But it could be one of your options if you opt to buy branded fragrances.

Yelp
This place is a crazy shit hole full of shady merchants and asshole money changers who you have to seriously haggle with to get some semi-decent rates (though it is still better than changing your money at the hotel). In terms of the building, it hasn't changed much from what it looked like in the early 90's when I used to live there. Yes there's a few newer shops here and there but for the most part it's still a place where you find plenty of aggressive, shady electronics dealers, clothing retailers and video game shops. There's also a small food court in the back, but I wouldn't make this a priority dining experience unless you're local and need to grab a bite nearby in the interest of time. Frankly, it's the plum location that gives this place an advantage. Also it's interesting to see that decades after I first stepped foot in this place, it's still a huge gathering spot for the Filipino community (and the tons foreign maids that work in Singapore and spend their precious day or two off each month gathering here on Sundays). But yeah, if you're a tourist you'll end up walking by here simply because of it's location on Orchard Road. But unless you're dying to buy something here or change money, I can think of plenty of better malls in Singapore to throw your money away in.

Yelp
We had breakfast at the Asian food court located in the basement. We ordered the Singaporean breakfast - two soft poached eggs, kopi, and toast. Cheap and satisfying. Not a lot of folks at breakfast time but hoards of folks at lunch and dinner. Don't people cook at home?

Yelp
This place is amazing. Like a little mall just for Filipinos. You can go to a travel agency, eat food, buy clothes, exchange money, get Filipino foods and goods, etc.

Yelp
This shopping centre in close to where I am staying. I went specifically to buy cheap souvenirs and was not disappointed. Got the best deal 6 prices (magnet, key chains) for $10.
