On the Grid : Lucky Yu Canteen

"The area’s only Asian fusion restaurant, Lucky Yu is an intimate space with an extensive menu of baos, gyozas and sharing small plates. Eating here twice and ordering the same meal is unlikely. There’s only space for around 20 people, so advance booking is essential. There’s a real effort to ensure the menu has decent vegan options – try the miso and aubergine gyoza, an absolute game changer. If you need that meaty fix, perhaps go for the lobster and chorizo bao with coconut and chilli mayo. It’s also BYOB, so be sure to visit a local bottle shop (Oddbins is a few doors down) and pick up some craft cans or a bottle of wine" - fourcolourblack

The 12 Best Restaurants In Walthamstow - London - The Infatuation

"Lucky Yu is the bakery equivalent of Paul Rudd playing with puppies: wholesome. Pre-order and collect from a window ‘hatch’ at the side of baker Hai Lin Leung’s home. The menu has nods to Leung’s Cantonese heritage, like sesame soy congee sourdough loaves and bo lo bao (pineapple buns). Everything is great, but the ginger and spring onion focaccia is something special. If you keep missing out on a hatch slot, keep an eye on Bake Street’s Instagram. The two have collabed a couple of times." - sinead cranna, jake missing

This was second time visiting Lucky Yu and it was just as delicious as I remembered. My experiences were around 7 months apart and I can’t fault this restaurant much at all. I tried the Happy Hour menu with my boyfriend and we got 3 dishes each for £20 (6 dishes = £40) which was a bargain. All of our mains were really tasty with the potato dish as the standout! I also tried the Lucky Yu Lychee soda which was very nice. Kelly, the main waiter this evening, was informative and provided great service and advice. All staff were friendly and polite. I’d certainly visit again and look forward to taking my friends for their first time in the future.

A tapas style Asian restaurant with different flavour combinations. You choose small dishes to share ranging from karage chicken and spiced rice, prawn etc. They also have vegetable options. Overall, I'm giving 4 stars because every dish tried too much to stand out with spices, seeds, sprouts etc. It didn't seem well balanced when every dish competes with each other in terms bold and stronger flavours. I'm giving 4 stars because it is definitely on track to impress but for me at the moment refinement is needed. I do recommend you stop by and taste for yourself. The atmosphere is nice and the service was good 👍

Such incredibly good food!! They say 3-4 plates per person but we were 3 gals that only managed 6 and a half plates between us!! Sauces were great defo recommend the duck buns!! Really friendly staff and had lots of time for us. Aesthetics were so cute too down to the plates and cocktail glasses!

Really good food and small plates which are great for trying more food. Not a massive menu, which is fine when they have really unique offerings! Filled us up and we will be back.

Delicious dishes (although the mackerel was a bit fishy for me), decent portions and efficient service. Would definitely return and recommend. Chilli oil best I’ve ever tasted.

I can’t recommend this place enough❗️ As a big foodie who’s fortunate enough to try new restaurants weekly, claiming this as my number one pick for 2025 is a huge deal. The flavours blend perfectly, every single dish is absolutely mind-blowing, and the portions are ideal for sharing. The atmosphere is vibrant yet cosy, and the customer service is simply exceptional. If you’re looking for a dining experience that truly stands out, this is the place to go!

We went for lunch and tried the three dishes for £20 deal, which was a nice way to sample multiple items. I really enjoyed the potatoes and aubergine as well as the prawn crackers, which I would highly recommend. The dumplings were good too. We also ordered the bao bun, though that was not as much of a favourite compared to the other dishes. The vibe is really nice and they have done a great job with the aesthetic of the building. The mocktail menu was tasty as well. Service was friendly, although a little slow and needed a couple of follow ups. Overall I would recommend going, but probably only once unless they update the menu regularly.

Excellent food, particularly loved the gyozas and the broken rice. Be aware of their strict seating slots as you will be reminded several times about how much you have left! Tick, tock…
