Ordered the breakfast burrito with avocado, mushrooms and chicken sausage. The buritto comes with eggs and hash browns in a large flour tortilla. It was very good even with it having to last through the end of my run, me cleaning up and driving to work. Was not the best I've ever had but I would definitely give it another shot when it won't have to wait so long to be eaten.

Google
Lucky is awesome! One man show! It takes a while to get service, and you have to be patient. I will say I was getting a little impatient, but Lucky knows who came in when...somehow. I then wasn't feeling like I needed to rush, Lucky is so calm and makes you appreciate the vibe. I would say this place is not for everyone, but the food was excellent and cheap!!!

Google
Amazing food dished out by a local legend! Lucky has great jokes and a better attitude. Take your time with this place, it’s just him running the show but occasionally with some help! Great portions for the price. CASH ONLY!

Google
Long overdue review. Rest in peace Lucky! Good guy who ran a solid breakfast joint. I loved it here since I never had a grandpa and he filled that void whenever I went. Chill guy who offered me additional food without cost to not just me but other patrons. He’d say “you want more hash browns?” And I’d say “yes” and he’d give me additional hash browns free of charge, sausage and bacon too! Although sometimes I’d order a meal and he’d get me scrambled instead of over easy I never complained because it was delicious anyway! Rest in peace!

Google
RIP. Was always an amazing experience treated every single customer like they were family. One of my favorite things is when he would Ask you want more toast? Sometimes even if you said no, he’d give you the toast. Then he would say that OK I eat toast for you. Such and amazing person. Gonna miss you Lucky.

Google
Lovely greasy spoon. Coffee was perfect, bacon was crispy and the owner is charming. I’ll be back!

Google
An old man (named Lucky?) will make you one of four simple American breakfasts for under 10$. Cash only. He runs the whole diner by himself so it might be slow when there's lots of people. It's a good breakfast though.

Google
Luckys is no nonsense breakfast. It’s exactly what you need and nothing more. This place feels like it’s a Time Capsule, very clean and the owner does everything himself. Super cute north park gem that I hope sticks around long past lucky himself

Yelp
Lucky's Breakfast is really a gem. Lucky himself really does run the whole place single-handedly, from taking your order, cooking, and serving. I have so much respect for what he does. The menu is simple with just a few options- a two-eggs breakfast, omelette, French toast, or pancakes, and you can choose to add bacon or sausage. For drinks, the options are coffee and OJ. There is only counter seating, and the decor/music played are old-timey. Due to the seating arrangement, many of the guests from separate parties make small talk with one another, lending to a sense of community. The food, while simple, is good (especially for the very affordable price) and tastes like home. The toast had a good crunch to it with jam provided, Tabasco was available at the table for my eggs and hash browns, and most importantly, the generous portion of bacon was cooked crispy! At the end of your meal, you get a few fortune cookies. Lucky seems like a great man who is loved by his community, and his business seems to have a lot of regulars (and first-timers, too!). The environment in here is quaint and feels sort of like a time capsule to the past. I heard that Lucky may be retiring soon, so don't miss your chance to visit if this sounds like your cup of tea! It feels like a little piece of San Diego history.

Yelp
I've been trying to come to this place for a few years and finally got a chance to try it today however it is closed

Yelp
I heard lots about this place from a FB food page and I'm glad I came to visit. This place is a blast to the past with the interior decor, feels like an old breakfast diner vibe similar to what you see in the movies or shows (Gilmore Girls, etc). It's a one man show with an older asian gentlemen's that serves and cooks the food! The menu is simple and your typical breakfast foods, has brown, eggs, toast, pancakes, french toast, etc. There's coffee or juice (+$2). Food is nothing too special but it was yummy and reliable! I ate the whole plate and was so full. Lucky also makes sure you constantly have a full cup of coffee which is so generous! You also get a fortune cookie at the end of the meal. This place is cash only and also only counter seating. The community that comes here as regulars are some of the nicest people I've met! The seating makes it so that you're able to communicate with those around you and not be weird about it. There's 2 hour street parking around the restaurant. Just an FYI if you do come, be patient and understanding! This is not going to be the famous, insta worthy breakfast place but it's a homey place where you can get reliable good food at an extremely reasonable price!
google avatar

Greta M.

Yelp
The owner is very sweet! He cooks the food and brings it out himself. It is a interesting set up with all counter seating. He moves from the kitchen to the counters, asking what everyone wants and filling up coffee cups as he goes. The food is simple and tastes great! Regular breakfast and coffee making it feel very homey. He also gives out fortune cookies at the end :)

Yelp
A classic vintage diner that warps you back into a time where local diners in cities are run by the people who work there. The moment you walk in there is a sense of home that makes everyone in the restaurant feel like family. Run by Lucky and his friend/family(?), the service and food may not be what you get at other restaurants down the street but strangely enough, nothing about that is a bad thing at all. My group of 6 got the gamut of plates there and everyone was satisfied with their meals. The unanimous winners were the sausage so if you were to swing by those are must try!
google avatar

Gabriel B.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in San Diego. Simplicity at its finest. Lucky is one of a kind and his establishment will hold a special place in my heart forever. My recommendation is to truly lean into the experience, perhaps start a conversation with a stranger while waiting for your food, share a joke with Lucky, and maybe be okay with repeating your order a couple times lol. The food and the conversations will make the wait worthwhile. This place is a neighborhood treasure that will be deeply missed when that time comes. I will always feel grateful to have experienced it for myself.
google avatar

C J.

Yelp
I have a nostalgic crush on this place. Lucky is a sweet, old-school, care about his customers restaurant owner. The food was delicious, our order came out within minutes (9:30am Saturday) and lucky was delightful! Come hungry and ready for a blast from the past, counter stools and brewed coffee refills. And bring cash!
google avatar

Julyanna R.

Yelp
I'm so happy I got to try Luckys before they close. Ive read many reviews and I knew what to expect, but I almost burst into tears when I saw the two people working there. They deserve to retire, but they sure will be missed. I had brunch with my husband, we left 200% tip for how caring and polite they were, but you can tell they started to struggle to memorize the orders (the couple next to us repeated their order 3 times, still got the wrong plate and for some reason I can't explain Luckys took the guy's toast out of his plate (barehanded) and gave it to me. Lol. We were very confused, but it was funny). So if you haven't been there yet, be kind and patient and it will be worth it. The ambiance feels like traveling in time, it's a whole experience. We are coming back with friends soon!

Yelp
Lucky's breakfast is a simple place. It's a 1 man run business so please be patient. The food is simple. Lucky is a nice old man. This place has good vibes. The only downside, this place is only open till 12 pm
google avatar

Carenna W.

Yelp
IS LUCKYS CLOSED FOR GOOD???? Saw that luckys is selling his restaurant, does anyone know when his last opening day is? Cuz it's Wednesday 11/15 9am and the restaurant is closed I love coming to Luckys for the no frills breakfast and kind service. I feel like I'm back at my toisan's grandmas house when I'm eating here. It's a perfect mix of Chinese decor and 50s/60s Americana diner. If it is closed, I'm very thankful to lucky for his welcoming and kind personality. It's one of my favorite spots in San Diego.
google avatar

Yelp
What a wholesome place! Everything is done by one man, from service to cooking. Simple and cheap menu. You don't come here expecting exceptional food or quick service, rather something affordable that will fill you up, is satisfying, and for a nice time. Diners sit in a U shaped table, so it feels very communal. The music and very nice, and Lucky is so kind. He kept refilling my coffee cup, gave so many fortune cookies at the end of the meal, and even charged our group less than what he should have. It was a great way to start the day!

Ozer C.

Yelp
Been coming to Lucky's for years, it is one of my favorite places to bring friends and family that are in town because of the awesome setting at Lucky's. The music plus the decor makes it a must see when you visit the North Park neighborhood. The food is awesome, the menu is simple with only 4 items, and they're all good.

Ashley D.

Yelp
A must try in Northpark! Great food and relaxing atmosphere. Perfect place to have a cup of coffee and enjoy breakfast. Cash only.
google avatar

Ange V.

Yelp
Enjoyed the ambiance and vibe of this place.. entering it was is like going into a time warp. if you are an introvert who wants a quiet breakfast or an extrovert who wants to mingle in a dinner type set up, visit this gem in North Park area in San Diego.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything you could ask for and more in a classic brunch place - coffee, eggs, toast, hash browns, sausage or bacon! The owner is very kind and funny and the place was very clean, fast service for one person doing absolutely everything!!! The atmosphere is like being transported back to an old style classic diner!
google avatar

Curtis P.

Yelp
This is just a step back in time. Simple counter seating, a simple menu, and great value. The food is excellent and the coffee is included in the price. It's really like getting free coffee when you look at an omelette, hash browns and toast for $8.99 and for $1 get bacon or sausage. Lucky the owner keeps the coffee flowing and the food comes out fast from the grill. Cash only. Parking can be tough as this is a city-like location.
google avatar

Morgan S.

Yelp
This is such a cozy little time capsule. It isn't extraordinary food - But a simple, ordinary breakfast in this cozy and quaint one man operation is warm and fulfilling. I never got his name, but I was severely hung over and could only stomach eating fortune cookies. He gave me an entire box. Can't wait to go back
google avatar

Julia M.

Yelp
Breakfast was delicious! Service was great! And ambiance was very old time-y & relaxing! Owner is the server, cook and operator all in one and a very kind man! :) Overall, 10/10! Would highly recommend coming here for a great old school diner experience. P.S: the place has been open for more than 40 years!!
google avatar

Jacob N.

Yelp
If you are not in a rush, enjoy a nice breakfast at Luckys. It is honestly the most affordable brekky in San Diego. Lucky keeps the menu simple and every combo comes with a coffee or juice. Get lucky and have a nice day. (FYI - cash only)
google avatar

Mariella C.

Yelp
Excellent food & Lucky was so kind! There are only 4 choices for breakfast, but you can't go wrong g with any of them!
google avatar

Travis L.

Yelp
Lucky is the only one to wait on you and cook your food so it can take a while. The place fills up fast. They only take cash. It was a normal breakfast. Little out dated.
google avatar

Ginger D.

Yelp
No frills breakfast at a fair price. Lucky gets your order right every time. He just serves breakfast and does it well. See you there..
google avatar

Mama P.

Yelp
Great value and better ambiance that brings you way back. The owner does it all: waiter, bus boy, cook. Lucky is awesome and loves his customers and community.
google avatar

Lyndsey C.

Yelp
I'll be back! Make sure you know and are fine with the following before visiting: - The menu has all of four options so don't expect flashy menus or diverse dishes. -The only drink options are water, orange juice, and coffee. - There are no tables, only communal counters. - Cash only. - No to go containers. - You will not be in and out so do not visit if you're in any sort of rush. - The owners are some of the sweetest people around. - Great coffee. - Some of the best breakfast food I've had in a while. Somehow the eggs, hash browns, toast and sausage was just so much better than what I get elsewhere. I will definitely be back and may make it a weekend tradition. Very small, cute, and homey.

Yelp
A great simple breakfast in a quiet Chinese cafe. I went there on a weekday morning in route to a Dr.s appointment.

Yelp
So yeah this place is fascinating. I am probably going to reiterate all things said here by other reviewers because they are all true. My 2 cents: If you're in a hurry, don't come here If you are looking for a fancy brunch, don't come here If you want a rich menu, don't come here If you don't mind taking the time to sit around and wait to be served, do come If you don't mind the lack of privacy and the way the tables and seats are communally organized, do come If you want to grab a simple breakfast that involves eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, coffee or juice, do come This is run by an older gentleman who does it all by himself. People come here not just for a cheap eat, but also to experience a sense of community.
google avatar

Yelp
Lucky is amazing. The food is amazing. Still great prices. I will go back every single time.

Candice S.

Yelp
Lucky has been a San Diego icon for decades. He is a genuine and caring individual, a dedicated man whose meals are delicious and exactly what you need. The welcoming atmosphere, coupled with the fact that he does everything himself, is phenomenal and speaks volumes about the man himself. May God's richest blessings always be with him! Kid-friendliness: Lucky has seen five generations of my family in his restaurant. He is so sweet and kind to all of our family!

H. C.

Yelp
Good basic breakfast. Want hip or overpriced eggs and toast? Go elsewhere. Classic American Breakfast
google avatar

Dennis T.

Yelp
The atmosphere is kind of fun and it's certainly cheap, but the food was terrible. I'd rather pay a little more and get a good meal. My cookie told me I was going to make bad decisions that day.
google avatar

Hanafi M.

Yelp
Just like a silly schoolboy, I, a 66-year old (retired military) 4Got his lunch money. It's Cash Only Yepers. Had a wonderful breakfast with Mr. Lucky. So, anyway, I'm reaching for my wallet and there's only $7.00, and I need $12 w/tip. A very very nice man & his lovely wife, sitting @ the counter beside me; volunteered the difference without solicitation. Now isn't that kind? That says it all, those R the kind of people you'll meet here. Upon my departure I went directly to the ATM and then the post office, I insisted on his address so that I may reimburse. Easy parking, and really great old classic music (think Frank & Dean). The photos say it all. The pictures say it all and tell the whole story.
google avatar

Scarlett P.

Yelp
Very affordable, the price is too good to be real. Lucky is very friendly. He makes me know how it feels like to have a grandpa (my grandpas passed away when I was so little and before I was born). His food is basic but yummy. Even the customers here are nice too. They're like a family. We talked and interacted like we knew each other before we came to the restaurant. If you're looking for somewhere to wow you with the food quality or fancy setup, it's not the one. But if you just want something simple, a little happiness to start your day, it would be the one.
google avatar

Anita S.

Yelp
Best deal in town. 3 eggs, pile of hash browns, toast, coffee, and the best sausage I have ever had. The owner runs the whole place by himself.
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
I just finished eating my breakfast from this place for the first time. It was good and simple. This place literally felt like I walked in to a time travel machine and brought me back to the 60's - 80's! This is not the kind of place where you walk in and servers/buzzers meet and greet you then take you to your table, if you walk in and the old man is at the back cooking meals then just wait until he comes out and he will get your order. He's working alone, a one man show. This place is not something that some of these new generation people would appreciate, but as for me? This place gave me a very warm feeling in my heart. Being born and raised in the Philippines, this place reminded me of home. It felt simple yet fulfilling, genuine and overall it felt home .
google avatar

Selena F.

Yelp
Totally found this place by a chance scroll through Apple Maps but once we got there, my mom said she saw this place on the news. The owners have owned this place for a while and they're long-time members of the community. It seems pretty hidden, it's a small corner off University. The restaurant is made up of counters, so you wait for seats to open and you can fill in wherever you can. It's definitely a unique restaurant experience. The menu is simple and you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. Eating there was comfortable and it's a nice spot to go to for a quick, cheap breakfast. Be mindful that it's not a place to go with a large party (no more than like 3-4 people). If you want a good breakfast and also support local business, this is definitely a go-to place.

Johnell T.

Yelp
Just didn't like the breakfast. Older place where it didn't seem to cater to the younger crowd.

Paul A.

Yelp
I heard about this place from a friend and wanted to check it out. I had the #2 which is an omelette with hash browns and toast and your choice of bacon or sausage. It also comes with coffee and for $2 more a glass of orange juice. The breakfast was simple and it tasted great! I recommend checking this place out soon because I heard it was going to close down.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Lucky's is the type of place where you go one time and next thing you know you are going twice a week just for the experience. Lucky works the front and is the nicest person you will meet. I have never felt so comfortable in any place my entire life. The food is perfect, you get 5 ish choices and I promise it's all you need. Do yourself a favor go to luckys, sit deep in the chair, and enjoy the entire experience. You won't forget it.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Only giving three stars for the nice older gentleman cooking. I think this place has more potential but he needs help keeping it up. It's very outdated and doesn't feel clean. I like trying smaller businesses but I wasn't not impressed. Prices are very decent however and I love that's he's doing it himself. However he did spill like half our drinks and I kept having to ask for napkins. I understand he's an older gentleman so I get it.
google avatar

Richard D.

Yelp
Delicious food , awesome service. Will definitely go again! Quiet cause I was the 2nd one there . Got busy within thirty minutes
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
This place is the definition of a hidden gem. It's like being transported back in time to an old asian diner. The decor, the music, and the one man who runs it all. Lucky is a precious old man who really cares for his customers. He pours the coffee, talks to customers, takes orders without writing them down and surprisingly gets them all right even though it didn't seem like he understood our order. Then he goes and cooks it all. For a place that looks like nobody would want to enter, it was busy! We arrived around 9 am on Saturday and there was a couple people here, but as time went on more and more people arrived until it was almost full and it was a diverse clientele too. The food portions were good, although his prices went up since covid. The menu images on Yelp are old, and there's now only 4 menu items to choose from. But you can get 1-3 eggs for the same price. However, the food was disappointing. The over hard eggs were not done how I liked, the hashbrowns weren't crispy, the ham omelette was really dry and basic, and the toast was barely toasted, just bread. He gave us a ton of fortune cookies before we left, and after eating one stale one, we just left the rest there. If the prices were their original $4-5, I'd say it's worth it, but it definitely wasn't worth $15. Nonetheless, it seems like a popular spot for locals in the area. But I don't think I'll be back.

Andrea R.

Yelp
The food was yummy and the customer service was great! He really made our dining experience homey!

Yelp
Lucky. What can I say? This man and this place is so much a part of the heart of San Diego. It's simple breakfast food, not trying too hard to fit into the boujie dining model that everyone is accustomed to, and it's in a comfortable establishment - where you feel like you're sitting there with an old friend. Lucky delivery good food, great conversation, funny jokes, and you truly feel like there is so much love at the core of what he does. I went a few years between visiting here due to covid and recently went back and he made jokes remembering the fact that I was over 100lbs heavier the last time he saw me, saying I haven't been around to see him so I'm not eating well. THAT is what makes Lucky who he is and who people love from the moment they meet him. There is nothing less than love in this man's heart for his patrons and for his community
google avatar

Neil S.

Yelp
Give credit where credit is due. Lucky does it all. Takes your order, refills your coffee, makes your breakfast, enjoys casual conversation. That's dedication, passion, and hard work. I highly value that. I am so glad I was recommended Golden Phenix Lucky's Breakfast. Weekends are challenging for parking, but weekdays shouldn't be a problem. Located next door from Mike Hess and across the street from Tribute Pizza. I'll definitely be back to support this spot of over 45 years.

drippy Z.

Yelp
Great breakfast!! The owner does it all such a great spot an the price is great, thank you lucky!!!

Cassandra K.

Yelp
Ok look. I've been to trendy brunch and breakfast spots. There's no shortage of those in North Park. But let's be real- the true gems are the hole-in-the-wall greasy spoons. You'll either get a great meal for cheap or a great story to tell. In this regard, Lucky's is one of a kind. Lucky's is as simple as a restaurant gets: you sit down at the counter, tell Lucky what you want, he cooks it for you, you pay cash. The seating is a long counter that snakes around the interior of the restaurant. Each alcove behind the counter is situated so that Lucky can serve you personally. There are four menu items to select from and each one is under $10. All breakfasts come with coffee. You don't want coffee? Too bad. (Just kidding, you can order juice.) Going to Lucky's feels like Lucky is your grandpa now and he's going to make you breakfast and you're going to eat it and say "thank you." Lucky is a friendly enough guy, but there are some things that he does and says that no other dining establishment could dare to get away with... and it's hilarious. After my boyfriend and I took a seat at the counter, a group of trendy-looking women came in talking to each other about how they heard that they just HAVE to try this place. Y'know... as though this one of the many trendy brunch spots in North Park. One said "Oh, I bet this place is good! I don't know what to get!" She started questioning the other diners, "Did you get the omelette? Is it good?" Lucky turned to her and said "If you're hungry, it is good." My boyfriend and I giggled to each other and found great entertainment value that he can say stuff like that to people because he's a one-man show. We'd both get in trouble if we talked like that to people at our jobs. When we got our breakfasts, it reminded us both of what would happen if we asked our dads to cook. Lucky keeps it simple and loads your plate up with food that looks like he just ran down to the grocery store and got whatever bread was on sale. But you know what? Lucky does something impressive. He's the owner, cook, and server. He gets to you when he gets to you, he cooks you a no-frills meal, and it's like $15 for two people. Plus, you have to give him some mad props. He's been on that corner of Grim and North Park Way for a looooong time and he makes his own hours. So I will say this, it's not "good," but it's good and it makes for a good story. I see why Lucky has so many regulars.
google avatar

Kristen W.

Yelp
At a first glance, you think you missed the corner restaurant, but when you go in the bright red door, you know you've landed on the right spot! The dining options are simple: choose an open seat either next to someone or in your own corner - if you can find one. Breakfast is what we were in search of and there were 4 different dishes to choose from. If you're looking for a one man show - this is the perfect place! Cash only and amazing food and service. The guests here are regulars, newbies and passer-byes. Worth checking out if you are in the area!

Yelp
I had a long drive from Los Angeles and I wanted to get a good breakfast near my appointment and I saw this location on Yelp and. If you have time the breakfast is wonderful it's simple but it's wonderful .I recommend it to everyone and I would be back again thank you.

Yelp
Based on my last review it appears that I've been coming to Lucky's since 2007 and 12 years later I'm happy to report, it's the exact same as it always has been. Don't mistake the lack of service for a business that doesn't care. It's actually the exact opposite. This is a one man show, which means he (Lucky) is doing all of the work, keeping prices down and customers happy, but by no means is it "bad" service. So here's the question: what can $5.00 get you these days? Certainly not a meal from McDonald's much less a breakfast from a kick-ass local diner, right? Wrong! $5.00 at Lucky's translates to a plate piled high with two eggs, a layer of hash brows, 3-5 slices of bacon (it's a crap shoot), buttered toast with jam, and a cup of coffee - all served with a side of humor. So, where are you spending your next $5.00, friends? May I suggest, Lucky's?
