Luc’s Cafe Review - Fairfield County - The Infatuation

"Come to Luc’s on a spring or summer evening and sit on their patio, and you’ll be transported to Paris, even though you’re eating right next to a parking lot of Suburbans and Porsches. Just face away from the vehicles and soak in the flower beds, the twinkling string lights, and the live guitar player while sipping on a Gabrielle spritz (their signature cocktail with St. Germain and crémant). And if the patio is full, the quaint, cozy basement dining room with stone walls and daily specials handwritten on a chalkboard feels equally Parisian. You can very easily fill up on the free table bread and butter, but make sure to save room for a cheese board appetizer and an entree—the chicken is simple but seasoned perfectly, and the sole filet is served in a butter-heavy sauce you’ll be wiping off your chin all night long. photo credit: Sam Schwab" - Ciera Velarde

This has become my go to “treat myself” spot. The bartenders are always so knowledgeable and make a perfect dirty martini. My tried and true orders are the roasted chicken, mussels, or escargot. All absolutely phenomenal.

Luc's is my absolute favorite restaurant for quite some time now; the food is always delicious and I've never had a bite that was less than perfect and I really mean that. The atmosphere is phenomenal, perfect lighting, romantic, cozy, authentic historical building, clean, absolutely a wonderful experience. The service is always excellent, very kind and thoughtful staff. We usually make our reservations weeks in advance because it's a destination, Ridgefield is a wonderful town full of interesting, independently owned boutiques and Luc's is in my opinion the crown jewel of Ridgefield's amazing dining scene.

Best steak I had had in a long time . I got the Rockefeller cheese sauce steak. It was delicious. We also ordered chicken with mash potatoes, a Luc’s burger for the burger lover teen I have and Steak tartar for the raw food lover other teen. Everything was delicious. The service was great and the environment so good that we decided to go for a small dessert and a nice cup of grand marnier to close the meal.

Luc’s has been our favorite restaurant in town since it opened. Last evening was lovely dining out doors. My daughter ordered a ham sandwich. There were long pieces of plastic she pulled out, which she could have choked on. When we brought it to the waiters attention he seemed unconcerned. He said they wrapped the ham in plastic. He didn’t offer her another entree and he didn’t take it off the bill. The other half of the sandwich also had the long pieces of plastic on it. How does someone miss this while preparing a sandwich? Of course she left half the meal on the plate. This has been her favorite restaurant since childhood. To make matters worse we were guests of my sister-in-law. She paid the bill. I expect better service at Luc’s and everywhere else I dine. DO BETTER!

I've been wanting to go here for a long time. I'm so happy I did! The atmosphere is wonderful, the food is divine and the service is great. The quality of the food is definitely high, so it's worth every penny. This may sound funny, but if you get anything, order the Yukon Gold mashed potatoes. They were the fluffiest I've ever had. I would go back there just for that! The French onion soup was definitely one of the best I've had. My mom had their soup of the day which was carrot ginger and she loved it.

Unless you are willing to risk being offended and insulted by the unpredictable behavior of the owner, do not visit this restaurant. We arrived at 5:30 PM on Bastille Day - an admittedly busy day for French restaurants, though the restaurant was only about 3/4 full - to celebrate my father’s birthday. We arrived on the early side because they don’t take reservations for parties of 3. After asking the hostess for a table for 3, we were shown to what was clearly a table for 2 people - this was being used as a 2-person table across all other parts of the restaurant. We kindly asked if we could be given one of the 4 person tables that were empty (there were at least 2 available indoors, plus additional seating outdoors). The hostess said she would need to check with someone and walked away. A few minutes later, an older French man (who we later learned was the owner) came up to us and said “This is our only table for 3. You can take it or you can leave.” as he pointed at the door. This man, who we had never met, treated us despicably, with utter rudeness, arrogance, and contempt. At this point, my father - who is also French - began speaking with the owner in French and expressed his disappointment with the owner’s attitude. The owner continued to act appallingly, saying he didn’t care how we felt he had acted and that we should just leave now, waving us away with his hand as if swatting a fly. My father continued to express his offense as we left the restaurant. While walking out, the owner, following us, bizarrely said “Here, there’s a table outside.” My father asked the man in French if he really thought we would remain after this interaction. Regardless of whatever else may have happened at the restaurant that day, there is no excuse for any person to treat another in this manner. I would encourage anyone considering visiting this restaurant to find another, or risk having an evening ruined by one of the rudest, most condescending people you will ever meet.

My boss introduced me to Luc's and I can't stop going here. Escargot is sooooooo good!!!! Mussels are to die for. Ryan our server is my favorite, sorry other servers. I enjoy our conversation. Gabby the bartender - knows how to make a good drink with a smile on her face, she is very quick and attentive. If they say it is going to be a wait, enjoy the wait, it is quite entertaining. Grab a drink at the bar and enjoy ambiance.

Yelp
This is some solid French food. They brought out some olives and bread before the food. The Italian mussels were a bit too herbaceous but yummy. The beef tartare was a little sweet but enhanced by the tableside salt and mustard. The duck and the steak frites were quite good. We finished with profiteroles that hit the spot. The inside is slightly cramped but great ambience for a date night.

Yelp
I was told by my parents to go to Luc's about 12 years ago. Well over a decade later I finally went. And it did not disappoint. Started off with very good baguette and fresh butter. This was one of the most delicious French Onion soups I have ever had... Especially the high quality cheese. The flavor of the broth was perfect. The salad I had was good, but small. Croque Monsieur was good and very heavy. Lamb entree was very good - delicious sauce and potatoes. Prices were pretty fair. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here on a busy Saturday evening. This is a very cute French restaurant tucked in a hidden corner of a plaza. We were greeted promptly and politely by a very professional hostess. Once seated we had a fig and goat cheese appetizer that was great. The cocktails here are very well made. My French 75 was outstanding.

Yelp
While the food was tasty, the service could have used some work. Our server was very abrupt, he thought there was only two of us to seat when there were three of us, and had us get up from our table. Only to seat us back at the very same table.... Now I understand things get busy and hectic sometimes, but it could have been handled better. If you're getting the soup, it is very rich.

Yelp
Since they don't take ressies for small parties we showed up hoping for a table. It was packed but we lucked out with a table outside because someone else decided not to take it. I haven't been here in years and couldn't really remember how the food was and it was good - not amazing but solid French fare. The interior is pretty small and parking is also difficult at prime times (like dinner on a Saturday night). We started with the foie gras terrine and the escargots. I've had better of both but still quite good. My husband got the filet mignon special and he thoroughly enjoyed it. I got the moules Provençale and they were really good - tender mussels not chewy or fishy tasting, the sauce was delicious. The fries were thin and crispy but because we were outside they got cold pretty fast. I love French food, and am always on the lookout for accessible casual French dining. This is definitely a solid choice.

Yelp
Wonderful ambiance, good food, but slow and not the best service. We weren't in a hurry, but it took quite a while to get our late afternoon lunch. Our food was mussels which were good, hanger steak, a little tough, and roast chicken which was moist and tender. Chicken was served on mashed potatoes. Seemed to be missing another vegetable like green beans or something else. All in all, fairly pleasant. Bring your appetite and a side order of patience

Yelp
Today my husband and I had the best lunch at Luc's cafe! We walked in and were immediately transported to a small brasserie in France. My husband is French and kept saying how he felt like he was back home. We could not stop talking about how cozy everything felt. The service was exceptional. We were treated to complimentary olives, bread, and butter, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Every dish we ordered was amazing, but our personal favorites were the steak tartare, cassoulet, French onion soup, and of course the desserts. The flavors in each were amazing and captured the essence of French cuisine perfectly. We even had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who was incredibly kind and welcoming. This restaurant not only met but surpassed our expectations. We will definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for delicious food.

Yelp
Went on a late Friday night at about 8.30pm, it was starting to get a bit quieter so we found parking (one of the last few spots) and got a table Its a very busy and cosy place, small table.. we were surprised to see folks coming in after 9pm as it was meant to close/last orders at 9.30pm but hey The food was good overall. For starters We had the Foie Gras which was superb We also ordered the Tuna Tartare which I couldnt eat - I know its got wasabi but its mixed in with the food so very overpowering - usually this stuff is 'on the side' for this kind of dish - still if you love Wasabi then...... Main course Steak Frites - this was good overall Moules avec Frites - chose the tomato base which wasnt that nice Service was ok - the place was busy so I think our server was rushed off her feet Next time we'll go for the white wine based Moules We will be back but no way we'd come before 8.30pm - place would just be too busy But I much preferred this to the stupidly overpriced L'Ostal (in Darien that adds a kitchen support fee - please wtf)

Yelp
A true French bistro experience! Food and service exceptional. Onion soup and escargot delicious Well worth a visit!

Yelp
Luc's is one of those very special restaurants where once you enter, you feel as if you are back in France!! Great atmosphere, great waitstaff and wonderful food well prepared!! I definitely recommend Luc's !!!
google avatar

Danni I.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to go in Ridgefield. Ambience is great, service is perfection, and the food is reliable. I always come back for the tartare appetizer, which is served with a salad. The mussels the last time we went were a bit overcooked, but we ate it anyway. Will I be back? Yes. Many times!!
google avatar

Christi M.

Yelp
Absolutely everything: perfection. That tiny kitchen makes magic!!! Like a fairy cottage with wood beams and interior stone; still in use from Revolutionary War years! Magnifique!
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
Well, just dropping by to say that Luc's remains magnifique. Today, I had the best burger ever there. I've had their burger before, so I knew they have a good one, but the one today was outstanding. Get it with Swiss cheese and put lots of Dijon mustard on it. You won't regret it!!
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
We had a wonderful lunch and everything from the drinks to the entrées was just perfect... The lamb was amazing

Yelp
Not really wanting to give a negative review but... met my wife after golf last Saturday so was very hungry! I could survive the not impressive bread but when I tasted the onion soup I was incredibly disappointed! The flavor was almost water. Like no rich onion flavor. The steak with fries and salad was ok, nothing special! Honestly, after the soup I'm not sure I would go back! I would give the atmosphere a 10. Our server was very nice.

Yelp
We are regular customers at Lucs. We've had several recent visits to cause us to rethink this as a "go to" option and moving Lucs to our "no go" category. On this recent experience it was very crowded and there is no place to "stand" while you wait, yet restaurant will not take reservations for a party of 2. We were seated at a very tiny table which could barely fit our plates! We ordered the fish special and another regular favorite of ours. The fish special came out undercooked at the same time as our other meal. We had to wait for the do-over fish to come back out ( causing the 2nd meal to be cold so we could eat together). There were many apologies but when the fish special reemerged it was just "ok"... not what we expect for a supposedly high end dining experience and expensive fish special. Seems like the chef did not know how to cook it properly. When the bill came, we were charged for a different, more expensive 2nd entree instead of what was ordered. And, we had the same exact thing happen to us a few months back, both with a poorly prepared fish special and second entree, and the second entree thing feels "intentional". Think we will pause on Lucs for a while!

Yelp
Great spot... bistro ... too bad is an hour away. The food vibe and service all spot on. They definitely got the escargot right

Yelp
Great spot to eat! Service was good and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was lovely a little cramped but to be expected.

Yelp
I heard a lot of hype about Luc's and wanted to see if they lived up to the reputation. I did love the decor and how the bar area/patio is modeled after a Parisian café. The interior dining area is definitely reminiscent of a wine cellar. Our server was nice and attentive. First, they serve you olives, baguette, and butter; I wish the bread was warm or toasted though. The French onion soup was very good and different from what I'm used to. The sweet onions really came through and made the soup sweeter than salty. The marinated hanger steak was flavorful but I thought is was rather tough. The sautéed shallots on top added a lot of profile to the steak. The mussels in white wine sauce were tender and cleaned well. The broth wasn't as flavorful as other places I've been. Surprising, I thought the French fries were spectacular. The prices are rather high for what we got. Overall I am not impressed yet I am not disappointed. Luc's makes fine food, but I am not compelled to go back because I don't think the price/value ratio is worth it. I definitely think it's worth trying, especially if you're curious about French cuisine.

Yelp
I've known the owners of the restaurant very well. And I've got the chance to visit the place with my dad a few weeks ago. And it was fantastic!!! I can see myself coming here many times. And it's worth it. The food is so amazing and all classic French dishes and it's worth trying. Marissa, the owner who I've known for a long time, came over to chat with me and my dad. And servers were great and a big shout out to all the cooks there! The atmosphere was great and next time when I come, I am going to try all the desserts. This place is a great to bring your spouse on a date or bring your friends and family for lunch/dinner. When you go to the restaurant, you feel like you are in France! So if you are looking for a great place to eat in Ridgefield, go to Luc's Cafe today!!!

Yelp
Took the family out for an amazing meal. The four of us each had a different meal and we had a chance to sample a couple of items from the menu. The rack of lamb was huge. The salmon was amazing. My son had a burger. What a great value and a very generous portion. Wait staff was excellent. And don't miss out on going Wednesday night for the live music.
google avatar

Robin H.

Yelp
We do love Luc's. Have been there numerous times, and always feel like we are back in France. Cassoulet, tartare, French onion soup, salad Nicoise...so Parisienne. And if there is a birthday, they do a low key but festive presentation. Can't say enough good things about this place.

Jose L.

Yelp
Fantastic dining experience. Excellent food, service, and Ambiance. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the simple charm of this gem. We had the Mussels for our appetizer and it did not disappoint. Probably the best Mussels we've ever had. Cooked perfectly with just the right balance of sweet and savory, not at all fishy. My glass was never empty as our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Our entrees were cooked to perfection. I had the steak and my wife had the duck. It was a pleasure dining at Lucs. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
It is exactly what you think it is. Our french jewel in town. The staff is highly professional. The menu came directly from Paris, we love the food and we always enjoy the great desserts they have too. The croque Monsieur is my favorite.
google avatar

Christian Y.

Yelp
Luc's is a go to spot for locals and I see why. It's a little bit of France in Connecticut. The interior is rustic and intimate and the food is consistent. They have their main menu as well as a specials board for seasonal/daily dishes. It's great for a big group as there are heartier dishes and lighter options, too. The staff is friendly and there's always a bustling crowd.

Roger M.

Yelp
Adding a star as the duck has been quite good since I wrote the review. Still love Luc's, that hasn't changed.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
One of my all time favorite restaurants. The food, service, & ambiance make for a great night out.

King K.

Yelp
As usual, the food is delicious from the steamed mussels with the broth, it's just exceptional for dipping the bread. The note to the salad with the beautifully tasteful cheeses. Then add the steak frites for the next layer of delight. The sorcerer was a bit unique, but I give it a seven out of 10. The wine was delightfully dry and tasty with the multiple layers of food. Service definitely could've been better as we had to pour wine. Ambience Zoe's delightful. Eating inside it's always like that warm cave feel it's sitting outside and they're enclosed makes you feel like summers right around the corner.
google avatar

Gina P.

Yelp
Excellent and consistently delicious food. Great service. Very conveniently located for me. You can Never go wrong with a meal here.
google avatar

Jeffrey R.

Yelp
Lucy's is as close to real French brasserie as you're likely to find north of NYC. Excellent ambiance to begin with. It feels right. Excellent brasserie menu. I've eaten there over a doxzen time and never had anything less than an excellent meal. I'm partial to their excellent steak frites, lamb & mussels but enjoy their salads & sandwiches at lunch. Excellent desserts as well. Warm, efficient service is a strength and the noise level, compared to many other local restaurants, is never deafening. Good acoustics. I go a few times a month and highly recommend Luc'c.

Jasper W.

Yelp
Nice people, good service, and good food. The hanger steak was good but not great. It could've been seasoned better. Wines by the glass were mediocre. I expected better from a French bistro. Good restaurant but not a great restaurant.
google avatar

Janet M.

Yelp
my favorite restaurant in Connecticut and definitely one of the only consistent good restaurants
google avatar

Kay W.

Yelp
AMAZING. You must order the escargot!! The best I've ever had. Mussels & Fries, I've ordered 3 times. The Pâté is mandatory. I love the texture. On my first visit, I ordered the Duck Confit. Perfection. The lamb is another MUST DO, says my date. We end with the Espresso Martini. Smile emoji. It's worth a long drive, and it's worth the wait. Busy place.
google avatar

Nixo A.

Yelp
A great way to taste true French cuisine. I was so pleasantly surprised with the menu that I had tough time choosing. The escargots (snails) may not be the best I ever had in France, but they were certainly great especially knowing one can barely find some anywhere in the area. Then, the duck confit with the pommes sarladaises, make you travel to a brasserie in France. Again, not a Michelin star, but certainly makes you feel that you're in France, a good way.
google avatar

Kai R.

Yelp
Obsessed. Have been dreaming of coming back for months, but just haven't been able to make it yet. Had salad, assortment of cheeses and meats, and the steak frites - the frites are cooked separately so all of my gluten free dreams came true. They had a special elderflower spritz at the time (summer) that I think about regularly and hope to get again someday. Staff was incredibly knowledgeable about gluten allergies, and tolerant of my toddler (he's well-behaved, but likes to walk around, and asked them 1000x to turn their ceiling fans on and off). Can't wait to go back!!!

Noel D.

Yelp
I had heard a lot about this place. The ambience is very nice, the service is discret but effective. The problem is the food. I had ordered confit de canard with pommes de terre sarladaises. But what I got was regular duck cooked in the oven, not confit. As to the potatoes, supposedly cooked in goose fat, their aroma was lost to green salad, what tasted like fennel and something that looked like shredded cabbage (our table didn't have much light). For dessert, the profiteroles were very good. Likewise, my wife got a salade niçoise which didn't look like the real thing: a lot of green leaves, string beans but no potato. The menu looks great but the results, on the whole, are disappointing.

Vera T.

Yelp
Love this place! When I am in Ridgefield, it's my favorite go-to spot. DELICIOUS food, wonderful atmosphere - like Im' really in France - and everyone I bring there loves it just as much as I do.
google avatar

Kay W.

Yelp
-- charcuterie -- hanger steak -- ham + Swiss -- green beans -- coffee -- past (French onion soup) -- mussels -- other steak dish -- beet salad Been here three times. Sat outdoors. First time during warm weather, and two other times when it was colder. They have heat lamps, which can be turned on. Servers don't wear masks if that matters to you. Parking is very convenient. You can pretty much park right outside the restaurant. The food here is good. Service is fine. My favorite items have been the hanger steak and sandwich. I'd get these items snd again. The pate on the charcuterie board is also special. Everything else is okay. Wouldn't order the mussels again.
google avatar

Susie S.

Yelp
Great spot for French food. Outside seating is very nice. Get the mussels and Frits or steak Frits. Everything is very good.

Page C.

Yelp
What happened to your sole, Luc?? When we first discovered Luc's two years ago, I thought I was in France. The sole meunière was perfect. Last night, it was a soggy fish stick. What a crying shame. My son had the steak and it was still good. Hope that doesn't turn into a Swanson's TV dinner. On a bright note, we had a great waitress. Her name must have been Cinderella.

Pola P.

Yelp
I highly recommend Luc's Cafe. It is the best French restaurant I had in US and France. I tried different French restaurants in France. This one is the best and most delicious. I met the owner and he is super nice. I love the ambiance too.

Bill M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Superb staff. Consistently excellent food. A classic French bistro.

Adair G.

Yelp
what happened to Luc's? The last two times I've been there, the food has been mediocre to poor. imagine a French restaurant making tough chewy and ultimately inedible crêpes? The carrot ginger soup was thin and watery. The skirt steak is tasteless despite the menus list of copious amounts of herbs and seasonings. the waiter was attentive. but a better choice for a dinner is just upstairs at Terra Sole. .
google avatar

Chill P.

Yelp
Came here for dinner with friends and it we had a great time. Food was good - the comfort food type, and the service was attentive and excellent overall. Sitting inside was a little noisy but the atmosphere was bustling. Outside would have also been very nice with the live music, but it does get chilly later at night. Profiteroles were OK, a little hard actually, but it was decent. Not too expensive, and will be happy to return!

Alie B.

Yelp
Feels like you're in France! Duck confit, steak tar tar, burger, fries, salad with house vin ....all delicious!!
google avatar

amy m.

Yelp
The absolute best in Ridgefield. Authentic, warm and delicious! Don't miss ordering a French martini and the duck confit - heavenly!
google avatar

Rose C.

Yelp
Charming place with exposed rock walls and beams on ceiling. Monday night was crowded. Can't imagine weekends! Starters were escargot and salad, bread, olives. We both had hangar steak with shallots, fries & arugula with lemon dressing. Bordeaux red wines. Everything was fantastic. Chris, our server, was nice. Everyone there was friendly which was unexpected because it was so busy. Great place.
google avatar

Joseph P.

Yelp
A pot of mussels, some French fries, wonderful bread for dipping, a cold bottle of Pinot Grigio, a warm summer evening among the outside tables, umbrellas, string lights, incense, live acoustic jazz and a soft buzz all around. All enjoyed with my favorite person. Luc's: the best restaurant in Ridgefield.

Rick G.

Yelp
Always consistently very good We have never had a bad meal here whether it be a burger, pommes Frites or mussels. It is a perfect meal for any day of the week.
