12 Best Taco Shops in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Petite eatery Lucy’s Deliveries Y Mas (previously known as La Cocina De Lucy) doesn’t have many seats, but it does have multiple options for tacos — asada, pollo, chorizo, lengua, and more come with containers of fresh salsa, limes, radishes, and a roasted pepper. Sit outside if it’s a nice day." - Erin Perkins

Where to Find the Best Birria Tacos Around Charleston - Eater Carolinas

"Serving the Goose Creek area for over eight years, La Cocina de Lucy is a small restaurant filled with an enthusiastic customer base. Most anyone who has visited this Mexican eatery will tell you that you need to go immediately. La Cocina de Lucy recently started offering birria tacos made with shredded goat, which makes this version the closest to the original birrias found in Jalisco." - Erin Perkins

Google
Loveeee this burrito. It’s so big! And this girl can eat. Reminds me of back home in Cali! The only thing I was like ehhhhh to, was the rice. I don’t know if maybe it was just today or if this is normal, but the rice was made with some sort of long grain. Hispanic rice is short and stocky haha. Just threw me off a bit. Almost like jasmine rice. But the rest was AMAZING!!

Google
Piss poor food quality and piss poor service. Paid $38 for 6 tacos.... Got all the way home to find that my 3 flour chicken tacos are beef or pork I don't even know because I don't eat beef or pork. My boyfriend got 3 steak corn tortilla tacos… for some odd reason they were not steak and the tortilla was not corn. So I call the restaurant and the cashier tells me "the manager isn't in today" AS IF ITS NOT A FAMILY OWNED RESTAURANT but I digress she then tells me " I don't know what you want me to do" I'm not in the business of wasting money. I go to the restaurant to rectify the issue.. not one apology, the food was remade uncooked damn near it was so cold but when I said it was cold the cashier just stared at me. Please don't waste your money here. I never will again.

Google
A small but great little spot to get a good bite of Mexican food. I had the Cuban Sandwich, which was good, cold (ended up eating it on the plane going home the next day). Just a couple of tables outside and inside, which leads me to think they're more into delivery now. But still, good enough. Only disappointment for me was that we waited for about 25 minutes in the dining room while there were other orders being filled for both walk-ins and deliveries. Not sure why this was. Military discounts available, which is very important to me.

Google
Ordered a Burrito California which is supposed to have fries, guac, cheese, steak, and beans. Instead of fries got little potato crisps, no guac, no cheese. I usually don't leave reviews because I hate being a Karen. If I'm paying 16$ dollars just for a Burrito it's supposed to be as advertised. Anywho just thought I'd give my feedback. Burrito I received vs the burrito on their website. You be the judge. ( Green you see in pic, is green hot sauce)

Google
This place was great! Lucy’s was recommended by a patron who’s a regular. My wife and I were in the mood for some tacos 🌮 so we decided to give it a try. The Burria tacos & empanadas were amazing! The price of the food was extremely affordable and the young lady who took our order was very welcoming. If you enjoyed great tacos & empanadas this is the spot.

Google
Stop looking at places to eat right now, you have to eat at this place. Hands be down best Mexican I've had and all of... Well really ever and I've been across the California and back. Certainly the best place I've ever been in South Carolina hands down. Update: included menu and their selections appear to have increased. Quality is still outstanding as before.

Google
Hubby and I wanted some good tamales and found out about this place from our neighborhood FB page. Wow! Lucy’s did not disappoint!! Tamales are much bigger than what we had in Texas. Great flavor. Enchiladas were awesome too. Looking forward to going back.

Yelp
This local gem is a must for anyone who enjoys delicious food. When you walk in you are immediately greeted with amazing smells. After I ordered, I went outside to wait. It seemed like no time at all and my food was brought to me. I'll tell you it was way beyond what I expected. It was so fresh, hot, and delicious that I almost couldn't even believe it. A great menu, Huge portions, and great prices make this a "go to" spot for me from now on. Check this place out !!

Yelp
I was very impressed with the food. The portions are on the large side and the prices are good for how much food you get. Everyone has been really nice when we have gone. Sometimes it can be a little slow during busy times but if you're in a hurry you can order ahead online. My friend from California say it looks just like a California taco restaurant and that it's the best Mexican food she's had on this side of the country. The restaurant is small. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Indoor is just a couple of small tables and outdoor has a couple of picnic tables that could seat quite a few people. Everything looks clean. I definitely recommend the Lucy burrito and the California burrito.

Yelp
My husband got the steak street tacos & I got the birria tacos , so good, would 100% reccomend

Yelp
If I ever crave for some cheap but quality Mexican food, I have to come to Lucy's. It can be easily missed on Red Bank road, but just be on the lookout for the Ace Hardware sign and you'll find Lucy's right next door. It's a small and humble place. There are very few indoor seating (I believe it had only two tables), but plenty of outdoor seats and tables. Place your order at the front and wait for your number to be called to pick it up to take it your seat. I came at a time where there was an influx of people for lunch, but for ordering 2 birria tacos and one chorizo street taco, it came out in about 15 minutes. My go-to is always the birria tacos. I love the crispiness on the outside, the generous and flavorful fillings and the dipping sauce that goes with it. The chorizo street tacos were also delicious, but pretty standard. I used to love their green sauce... but this time it was not spicy and was not the old sauce that they used to have... I hope they can bring back that old recipe. I've probably ordered from this place 4 times by now, so I hope that tells you how good it is!
google avatar

Yelp
Great local spot with friendly workers. I got 4 birria tacos, but definitely could have been full off 3 - the birria tacos are a bit larger than normal sized tacos. Excited to go back and try their burritos. They also offer a military discount.

Yelp
Lucy's was featured in an article so I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed. Authentic Mexican food, great flavors, seasoned steak, rice, beans, and tamales like my grandma, the aunts, and cousins used to make around Christmas. All of them sitting around the table laughing and making tamales. Lucy's brought back fond memories of home. I will be back as there are more things I want to try, like mofungo. I would note that it is not a big place and inside seating is very limited and you do need to be patient for your food but oh is it worth it!!
google avatar

Brandon D.

Yelp
Small, tucked away taco spot that has never failed to impress my taste buds. Food is tasty and fulfilling. I recommend trying the birria tacos or the steak burrito or torta.
google avatar

Chase B.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food at a good price. Hard to find good Mexican food in South Carolina but Lucy's delivers with authentic meats, tortillas, and fresh salsas made in house that compete with west coast and Florida restaurants. Try their green salsa, has a great flavor of guacamole but also good kick. There steak burritos is consistent every time and they also have good barilla (goat meat).

Yelp
Fourteen inch burrito for $14? I got take out, wanting food for lunch for two days. This seemed like the biggest bang for my buck. Did I get 2 lunches for $14? Yes. But sadly the burrito was bland and a dry. After adding the tomatillo salsa (best part of the meal) it was ok, but they gave me half a sauce cup full and it wasn't enough for half a burrito. This burrito looked better than it was. I don't think they're a bad place they have street tacos, birria, cabeza, menu items that usually signify a great Mexican restaurant. I want to try again but I wouldn't get that burrito again.

Yelp
When I came in the tables in the corner were all crowded with people. There were people coming in and out constantly getting take out. This has been on my Yelp list for a minute. Yelp wins again. Yelp doesn't lie people. Lol. They have different sauces in the refrigerator by the register with your food. Please please please get the habanero sweet. It will change your paradigm. I overheard a couple leaving after they eat telling everyone they just found a new favorite restaurant. When I heard that I was like LETS GOOOOO!!!! I have been here a second time since. They're Birria tacos are simply the Best. Best thing on the menu. One of them will have you pretty full. And only one cost $3.50. you got to be kidding me. Thanks for helping me get cool points with my kids with that one. Most of these Mexican taco spots I hit, they seem to be obsessed with onions. That kind of kills it for me. Onions are overwhelming. Their street corn is amazing. I love the sauce and the way they finish it off with tajin is something special. They are very affordable. For $30 you can get a feast. They're burritos are super filling. The only thing I was turned off by where the nachos. They come in a sandwich bag. They weigh a ton and they have no flavor. You're definitely going to need some salsa with those. The burrito with chorizo sausage I heard was outstanding. My son ordered the sandwich with steak. We were at the table exchanging food left and right. And the four of us were all full by the time our $40 meal ended. I am definitely a customer now and will be back. Several times.

Yelp
I had to try this when I saw their menu and realized I'm now not far from them! I 100% approve. I am of Mexican descent and find it hard to find authentic in the area. Although not exactly like home, it's delicious! They also do have some plays on authentic foods to make them more Americanized and to appeal to others appetite. I tried both asada and pastor tacos. Asada was really good. Pastor was good but a bit grainy (the juices) if that makes sense? I was only given 1 very small salsa de aguacate. I thought regular salsas would have came with them as standard, but that may have just been my poor assumption. I do think it should be a thing. Note that I got this delivered so I couldn't ask about it! I was a little sad not to be able to add some spice to my tacos. I also saw the pupusas were BOGO free- so duh! I got the cheese ones and they were very yummy. Oh oh I'm not done. I of course secured some Horchata. I was given a large 32 oz cup at a great price. Delicious! I will try again and probably go in person to see the vibe and experience the service (and get salsa).

Yelp
When I visited this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by the great service I received. The staff was friendly and attentive, and they made sure that my dining experience was enjoyable. As for the food, the carne Asada burrito was absolutely delicious. The flavors were authentic and true to Southern California, and the meat was cooked to perfection. The burrito was also generously stuffed with all of the toppings that I requested. Overall, I had a great experience at this restaurant and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for some delicious Mexican food. The carne Asada burrito is a must-try, and the service is top-notch.

Yelp
Embarrassed to admit this...but Uber eats says I've ordered from here 38 times. There's a reason though! It. Never. Misses. The value is incredible. Some of my favorite items: carnitas quesadilla, cabeza torta, steak mulitas, sopes, burrito de Lucy (carnitas with bbq and French fries!), the BEANS, birria tacos. What drove me to finally write this review is the Primo burrito I got on my last order. One of the best burritos I've had anywhere. The Primo is a shrimp and octopus burrito with pico de gallo, sour cream, and avocado. It is STUFFED with plump, fresh shrimp and chunks of octopus. All of that for $14. You cannot beat it. Kinda don't want to post this and keep it my secret LOL. I will absolutely be ordering here again and again.

Yelp
My go to taco place!! The service is always great and the food is always good. Laid back environment.

Yelp
Not sure about all the 5 stars but .... Just ordered delivery from this place. My usual go to for tacos is Tiki Taco but wanted to give this place a try because 1. I didn't want to drive 2. The reviews were great 3. The pictures looked good and 4. The price was ok. 2.50 for a small street tacos my opinion is a bit high but I was willing to pay it since I didn't want to leave the house. What we ordered: 3 steak tacos 1 order of extra salsa 1 carintas torta 1 side of rice Now the food: Extremely DISAPPOINTING!! Look at my photos and you will see what I mean. The tacos look so so sad! It was supposed to be corn tortilla instead I got flour. The meat was so dry and there was nothing else on it but onions. The carintas torta was supposed to come with avocado, mozzarella cheese, sour cream etc. None of that was present. The side of rice was flavorless and I didn't get any salsa, NOT even the extra one I paid for. I called right away to let them know I wanted the order I paid for. On the 3rd try someone finally answers the phone. I explained nicely that there were things missing from my order and that what we ordered was not what we got. For example the torta was missing the avocado and cheese etc. Her response was, "the pictures sometimes don't represent what actually comes in it". I told her if that was the case, it's false advertising. The silly thing is, in the description it does say avocado and cheese! The young lady further explains that it's her first day and she was flustered at putting my order together.. Ok, we're all human. We all make mistakes but that does not explain the quality of the food. It was not edible. She took my number and said her manager was busy with customers but would call me back. I logged back on Uber Eats to take a screen shot of the carintas torta but oh my looks like they quickly removed it from their menu and off of my order record!! I absolutely hate leaving bad reviews and I always enjoy supporting small business but sadly this was not a good experience. Still have not gotten a call back. It's ok. I'll stick to tiki taco but this place will be on my first time last time list.

Yelp
I read about this little hole-in-the-wall in a newspaper article about places to eat on I26 along the length of South Carolina. It did not disappoint! I was able to order and pay online when I was getting gas at Costco in West Ashley and then it was essentially ready for me to pick up when I arrived. It is a teeny tiny spot with a couple of tables outside in front and a couple of tables inside- mostly though it is a place to pick up your food. Also, there is no ladies room. There is a hardware store next door (I actually missed the restaurant even though I was right in front of it and I went to the hardware parking lot to stop my car and look around to see where the heck the restaurant was- and then I saw it). I went into the hardware store to use their ladies room (it was out of order but they at least do have one). The food is so good and so fresh- you can't go wrong. Don't miss out on the home made chips- they are thick and crunchy with just the right amount of salt!
google avatar

Brandi W.

Yelp
Food is great. I've only had the chicken and pork tamales, rice, Al pastor tacos, chips and horchata. I recommend this place. It's small but most places that are small you know are bomb.
google avatar

Kerry B.

Yelp
Whew! I have been dying to try birria tacos for weeks, and these are the only ones you can have delivered. Thus begins The Spicening. I thought birria was supposed to come with a cup of broth for dipping, but these came having been dipped. The brisket was tender and flavorful and these tacos are spicy as hell! My lips are on fire, in the best way. I am glad I saved the birria for last, because it would have blown out my tastebuds for the others. The chorizo taco was delicious, and the pastor taco was the absolute best. The pork was so perfectly cooked it melted in my mouth and the flavor so tropical and refreshing. I wish I had ordered a dozen, and next time I will! I still have to track down the legendary birria with the broth, but for what this was, I am blissed-out on spice and my belly is happy. I have a tamale and quesadillas for later, but right now I am absorbing the birria experience.
google avatar

Miryam M.

Yelp
This is the photo they have on Ubereats. Save your $14 and go to Los gorditos off tanner ford bc this ain't no cali burrito this is bean and cheese carne asada burrito I called to let them know that my burrito had no fries and they said because they use "potato sticks" I can't
google avatar

Audra S.

Yelp
This was our first time eating here and it was AMAZING!!! The food was 100% authentic and so fresh!! The service was great also. We will definitely be back very soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Talking badly about customers in Spanish assuming they can't understand.... Big mistake lol my California Burrito was gross. Ordered chips and queso and was served shredded cheese in a bowl and charged $5 for it. Not to mention the place is filthy inside. Don't recommend
google avatar

Dawson R.

Yelp
I've eaten here maybe 20 times and the quality is always persistent! Great price for great food. The best Mexican food around.

Brooke E.

Yelp
Vegetarians be forewarned- I ordered a vegetarian burrito & when I got home I realized they didn't put any guacamole or beans, so it was just rice, tomatoes slices, lettuce, and about a cup of a pickled onions. Super disappointed. Saving grace were the bean and cheese papusas.
google avatar

Angelo L.

Yelp
This place just never misses, delicious every time I've had it, closest thing I've tried to a California taqueria.

Tim S.

Yelp
Best burritos I've found in SC. There are no authentic Cali burrito places but this place comes close. Definitely give them a try.
google avatar

Stephen T.

Yelp
La Cocina de Lucy is one of those places that you might not notice until you're craving some tacos! Located on the main drag while you're headed into the Navy Base, it's bright and colorful from the outside. Being fans of finding authentic traditional foods, we were excited to try out their tacos for the first time. Walking in you'll find a small counter for the cashier, a cooler filled with drinks and soda, and a rack of different candies and tortillas. We ordered on the phone and came in to pick up quickly, but soon realized they had a salsa and toppings bar. Being able to fix your tacos with a variety of salsas and seasonings makes it all the more enjoyable. So we grabbed some seats at one of their booths. I had the carne tacos and my wife had a variety assortment of them. The seating area is small but sufficient for several parties and comfortable to enjoy some of their specialties. Guten Appetit!
google avatar

Desiree V.

Yelp
One of the best spots in Charleston for birria!!! They have a super delicious salsa verde that is actually spicy (most places around here verde = mild). And the birria is always crispy. I've had it delivered a few times now from their location on Red Bank to my place of employment on Palmetto Commerce in Ladson and 20, 30, 40 minute car rides later it's still crispy!! And the flavor is so fabulous. One of these I need to go and try something other than birria but I can't help it because the birria is so good.
google avatar

Yelp
DO NOT USE THEIR ONLINE SYSTEM! I am currently sitting in the restaurant. I was ignored & told they did not receive an order online. That's fantastic...I have a charge on my credit card for Lucy's after I ordered. Lucy's is decent food yet takes forever for orders to go through. With no dependable online option, I would rather not eat/order here in the future. The food is good, but there are 3 really good places here on Red Bank Road. If you want to wait 30 minutes for every order or possibly be charged for an order, inquire about it...then be told "we didn't get anything", then be ignored, you will LOVE Lucy's. Buyer beware.

Emmanuel G.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican food I've had in Charleston, thank you. I had the Chile relleno, birria quesadilla and washed it down with a horchata. Never been more satisfied!
google avatar

Tammy L.

Yelp
Finally authentic Mexican cuisine. If your looking for good "Mexican Food" you've found your spot.
google avatar

Marisa K.

Yelp
We recently moved here from San Diego and have been missing San Diego quality Mexican food. Everything until La Cocina de Lucy has been gross. We found this little gem and instantly felt like we were home! The California burrito is just as good as the ones back in CA! Also the hot sauce is really good! Yummy!!
google avatar

Altaïr I.

Yelp
Today is unfortunately the last day I will be eating here as the military has decided to move me elsewhere. Still 5 stars. I ordered a California burrito and a horchata. 5 stars as always. Thank you Lucy for the delicious food for the past 3 years. I will definitely miss La Cocina de Lucy.
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
We LOVE Lucy's!!! Easily the best Mexican food in the Charleston area!! Great owners, amazing service, & the food is phenomenal! My husband loves coming to Lucy's for their burritos. He gets the California, Victoria, or the Juanita. I get the Carne Asada burrito, but you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu from the tortas to the tacos. They use fresh ingredients, and it's evident that the owners put their heart and soul into their food to provide authentic Mexican dishes.
google avatar

Alicia T.

Yelp
Always delicious love the new menu with pictures! I went with the host recomendation, The Lucy, and it was wonderful!

Nathan C.

Yelp
If you want a burrito so good it will leave you dripping in sweat, look no further. This place has some wicked burritos
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
First time trying just now. Absolutely the best authentic Mexican I've had in SC. Reminds me of true California Mexican shops. Absolutely delicious. Will be ordering again VERY soon.
google avatar

R J.

Yelp
The last 2 or 3 times we've ordered, the food has been really greasy. The contents, as well as the tortilla on burritos were greasy. Hands full of grease.
google avatar

Brenn R.

Yelp
I've liked the tacos and burritos I have gotten from here, they're pretty good. You can definitely get a lot of bang for your buck here.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Stopped in while in Goose Creek. I tried to order 2 tacos while my husband got a burrito. Was told I couldn't order just 2 tacos, minimum was 3 ‍ They were ok, nothing special in my opinion. The meat was dry and the tortillas were crunchy. Husbands burrito looked better.

Melissa M.

Yelp
Great food! We ordered the torta de pastor and tacos de birria con consume. Super yummy!! The torta was GIANT!! I wish it had been toasted just little bit longer, because it is a lot if bread! The tacos de birria were sooo good! A little greasy, but it's a taco dorado so expect it! Very good!
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
Delicious every time. Super friendly, too! Treat yourself to a fast, affordable & tasty meal. (:
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
This hole in the wall is excellent! I've been trying tacos from everywhere lately and this place has been the best hands down! Their food is very flavorful, great portions and I love the home made chips and pico! Great prices too! I ordered lunch via Uber eats and the food surprisingly well packed and still warm. This place is a must try!
google avatar

Kimber R.

Yelp
Great little Mexican place, directly next to ace hardware in goose creek, inside the market. Cheap, good authentic Mexican food. The only seating is a few picnic tables, but they do take out, which we saw a lot of people doing. It's a good little place and worth the stop!
google avatar

Richard O.

Yelp
For anybody needing a quick bite, this little shack isn't too bad to stop at. Decent variety in Mexican dishes varying from dish plates to traditional burrito/taco plates. I went for the carne asada burrito which is probably about the size of a newborn baby. In all seriousness, the spices are decent, rice a tad bit bland, but more than enough food to get my fill. Feels a bit that you're paying for the quantity of food than you are quality. But don't let the feel you. Even the simplest chicken quesadilla is as delicious as it looks for an easy dish. Again, seems a bit pricey but you're probably paying for quantity in all honesty. It sits in between the Ace Hardware shop and the neighborhood of Lakeview Commons. Seems like you could miss it when trying to drive in if there's bad traffic on Red Bank.
google avatar

Josh A.

Yelp
My al pastor burrito was big and delicious. Had the right amount of heat to it. My wife's asada and lengua tacos were a bit dry.
google avatar

Ed V.

Yelp
So far this was the closest to having real Mexican food I have found in Charleston. It reminded me of the taco shops in San Diego and Tijuana. There was a slight language barrier but for me that was a good sign that things would be more authentic so I took it as a good sign. I got a beef quesadilla and daughter got the beef tongue burrito. We got the food to go and within 10 minutes our food was ready. While we were waiting a large group of Mexicans lined up to order. Another positive sign! If they eat here then the food must be pretty close to being authentic. We both truly enjoyed our choices. The quesadilla was Delicious and stuffed with beef and cheese. It was quite the meal and with the red hot sauce that came with it I was very happy. I got to try the beef tongue burrito and it was very good also. The beef tongue was very tender and tasty. The tortillas they used are homemade adding to the overall taste of their food. I truly look forward to coming back to this hidden Gem and trying some more of their authentic Mexican food!!!

Jeff P.

Yelp
Based off of the great ratings I gave this hole in the wall a try. Not impressed with my order of 3 street tacos, guacamole, rice and beans. Steak was dry and was not served with any salsa to moisten it up. Tortillas are too large for the amount of ingredients served In them. Future recommendation, add more cilantro, onions, ask for steak cooked medium rare and serve in one tortilla!
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
All this review needs is just two words... wait, maybe four... Birria Tacos. You're Welcome
google avatar

Valerie T.

Yelp
We saw the restaurant as we were driving by we pulled in and ordered to go 4 asada taco with no onions. This taco had nothing but asada, no sauce, no cheese, nothing. Poor presentation. So many taco huts offer roasted veggies and sauce and veggies on the tacos .
