Ludlow Charlingtons in Lincoln Park is a coffeeshop that helps a dog shelter | Eater Chicago

"A dog-themed, shelter-supporting neighborhood coffee shop opened by a former sound engineer and his wife after they adopted their pit bull. Styled like a traditional European/old English pub with dark woods, beamed ceilings and stained-glass lamps, the small 800-square-foot space focuses on straightforward brewed coffee and espresso (no blended drinks or flavored syrups), sources coffee from Counter Culture and French pastries from La Fournette, and offers limited seating (two four-seater tables and 11 counter seats) plus Wi‑Fi. Dogs are not yet allowed inside pending city rules, but a dog-friendly outdoor café is planned, and a water bowl is kept outside for passersby. The owner partners with a local nonprofit that supports the municipal shelter, sells merchandise bearing the adopted dog’s image with half the profits donated to the cause, and is planning an outdoor dog adoption event; hours are 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 7 a.m.–6 p.m. Friday–Saturday. Google
The coffee shop has a warm and charming vibe. Walls are decorated with adorable dog pictures/painting. Though I haven't seen actual dogs at the shop. It's a nice place for coffee and dog lovers.

Google
This is definitely a one of kind quaint coffee shop that also supports dogs in need. English Renaissance dogs.in gold frames in dim lighting space. Coffee and pastries are great.

Stopped here while in town right before heading to Lincoln park and was so happy I did! The team was wonderful that worked here. This place is filled with locals that are catching up with friends, so cozy! My berry danish and pumpkin pie latte were recommended by the baristas and I was impressed. Skip Starbucks, come here instead.

Gurleen K.

Google
Cute quirky coffee shop! I got the seasonal snickerdoodle latte that didn’t really taste too different from a normal latte but was delicious! They didn’t have a ton of snacking options when I got there (later in the day) but the atmosphere was so cute! It’s an old timey feel with hilarious dog portraits, perfect for all dog lovers! The staff were super friendly too!

Miguel G.

Google
Definitely a place to check out. Highly enjoyed the coffee and the aesthetic of the shop. Understood why the place filled up so quickly

Google
I live down the block, and quickly made this my go-to coffee shop because it is simply the best in the city. Quality is always 10/10 whether you get a regular order or seasonal option, prices rarely change, staff is always beyond kind and attentive. Plus, my Aussie loves their dog treats.

Michael D.

Google
Cute small shop with an eclectic theme. Interior has a lot of green and black that gives me a bit of art deco vibes. There was a nice selection of pastries and specialty drinks and service was pretty quick. The shop has a dog theme to it with portraits of dogs in the wall they've helped get adopted and there's an emphasis on sustainability with some of the items for sale. Oh and if you get pastries they come in a dog bowl 🤌

Google
Lovely spot! I was greeted nicely by the staff at the counter, lovely choices for coffee and it tasted so good. I had an iced strawberry and creme latte and I can't complain one bit. It's a nice place for hanging out with friends and also work from home as well as people were seen on laptops. I will definitely come back again.

Yelp
The cutest little coffee shop in Lincoln Park! Amazing and dog-themed! They usually have an incredible special latte like a snickerdoodle or something like that on offer which is always amazing. The staff is super friendly and the place is adorable and quaint. I love stopping by when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Carys L.

Yelp
The coziest little cafe! The barista's here are super nice and welcoming and happy to provide you with drink recommendations. They also have a selection of pastries. Very dog friendly. I love the ambience of this café! The darkly painted walls give it a nice warm atmosphere to study or work in.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my go to coffee spots in LP! They have great espresso drinks and the pastry selection is usually solid. They have fun seasonal specials like the Maple latte currently is delicious. Fun atmosphere with all the dog themed decorations, and the staff always gives your dog a bone when you bring them in. Fun place in the morning!

Yelp
Ludlow is a hidden gem! I've been in the area many times and I somehow never stopped inside. I was drawn in by their advertisement of a peppermint mocha. I'm so happy I stopped in because it was one of the best mocha's I've had in city. The coffee was delicious, I'm not familiar with the Counter Culture brand, and the peppermint wasn't overpowering along with not being too chocolaty. The cafe itself is very cute but it is jam packed with smaller tables. Ludlow is a cute place to work from if you're solo or a small group of people. I absolutely love the decor and the love that Ludlow shows to pitbulls. They donate 50% of their merchandise profit to Friends of Chicago Animal Care and Control. I visited on a Saturday and the cafe was busy. Luckily I was just grabbing a coffee to-go. The staff I interacted with was friendly. Since it's a smaller cafe you have to be patient getting your coffee because they have a smaller staff so it takes a little longer to get your drink. I look forward to my next visit!

Yelp
Such a whimsical coffee shop in the busy Lincoln Park area! My boyfriend and I were obsessed with the dog theme decor throughout the coffee shop. This coffee shop dedicates raising funds for the shelter dogs of Chicago, so you're buying tasty coffee and doing it for a great cause. I got my typical go to - iced latte with milk and vanilla and it was delicious. My boyfriend absolutely loved his snickerdoodle latte - the flavor was on point! Many people come here to chat or do work, so get a table or bar seat when you can as it appears always busy!
google avatar

Yelp
Got a hazelnut iced latte. Espresso wasn't very strong & it really just tasted like milk.
google avatar

Alex Anne M.

Yelp
My friend, Allison, suggested this place and it was worth the hype! Ludlow Charlingtons Coffee Shop is family-owned and founded in 2020, opening its doors amid the covid pandemic on August 2nd, 2021. Service was fast with one person manning the register and creating the beverages. For dog lovers, this place is a must as it is covered in dog artwork and has dog treats for sale, books about dogs, and merchandise with their dog-inspired logo. If you have a dog they will ask if your pup wants a treat when you walk in! Every dog owner's dream is when other people make their dog feel special and this place does the trick. Relaxing music is playing around two two-top tables of four and twelve-bar seats available for seating with patrons working on their laptops. A drip is $4 and the Strawberries and Cream Latte could not have tasted more like strawberries and cream. I wish I asked what they used for the cream element because it made the drink so velvety. I got it iced and it was an inspirational way to kick-off a Friday. I've also got the blueberry cobbler latte and an almond croissant. The almond croissant is top-tier quality being flakey and crunchy on the outside and oogey gooey on the inside.

Yelp
The coffeeshop has a classy, modern, and quirky ambience with walls painted emerald green adorned with gold ornate pictures of dressed up, adopted dogs. The drinks were smooth and really like that they had a printer available.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Coffees are ok we thought they were gonna have more variety. But we order horchata and the strawberry they were both very good the barista was very sweet. The decor is very original. However The service was terrible the girl that was taking the orders on Sunday Father's Day had an attitude she was unapproachable. The entire time she kept scanning me. We found a new cafe a few shops down the avenue so were simply never coming back to this one.
google avatar

Shandi P.

Yelp
This was such a delightful little coffee shop! The dog portraits were amazing, and the iced drinks were great, too! It's easily walkable from Lincoln Park, making it a great place to get out of the summer heat for a bit. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Genna G.

Yelp
Quaint little philanthropic coffee shop that gives 50 percent of their proceeds from the merch purchased at the shop to support dogs through Chicago's Orphan Animal Community. Upon walking in I felt like I was in a dark shop you'd find in Diagon Alley right out of a Harry Potter book. The walls are filled with portraits of dogs dressed as royalty which I half expected to start talking. My latte was great and had all the options I was looking for ( eg sugar free vanilla syrup and unsweetened almond milk ). Food options were limited to a few pasteries so go elsewhere for a more substantial meal. Great coffee/ lattes AND philanthropic owners? Of course I'll be back. Fun, random, quirky addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Some of the worst coffee I've had in Chicago. Had a berry cobbler latte, which was supposed to be a seasonal special. It straight up tasted like cough syrup and had a really bad artificial aftertaste. I decided to say something to the barista, who, to their credit, was very kind and accommodating about the situation. They gave me a plain iced coffee. Unfortunately, the chance for redemption didn't work out because the iced coffee tasted like poorly brewed, old, stale coffee. Unfortunately will not be returning.
google avatar

Nicki C.

Yelp
Popped in before going to a nearby appointment. This coffee shop is so cute! Dog lovers are going to want portraits like the ones they have here. Small inside but plenty of seating to enjoy your coffee or pastry. Service was quick, friendly, and helpful! Parking sucks in this neighborhood. I've driven by several times but never had success in getting a parking spot. So this visit was my first time in as I was able to score parking! Hopefully I can pop in again soon!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I stumbled by this coffeeshop on my walk and I loved it! The inside is so eccentrically decorated with a ton of seating. I ordered a chai latte which was so good - one of my favorites in the city! I also got a croissant which was perfectly fluffy and crispy on the outside :)
google avatar

Runzer W.

Yelp
My friend and I went there to grab a coffee when wandering around the Lincoln Park. It's a pet-friendly coffee shop, and there are many cute pics on the wall! They also sell dogs' food made from non-meat materials. I got a medium hot latte with oat milk. It tasted very thick, which was just what I want in such a cool day! My friend got a small hot chocolate. Chill!!! The people there were really nice. And as I saw, it's a good place to study since it's quite and cozy inside. People there didn't talk very loudly, they just chatted in a polite and respectful manner. Really enjoyed my experience there!
google avatar

Shannon O.

Yelp
A cozy, moody coffee shop. Drinks are decent, unfortunately food options are very limited. I mostly enjoy the vibe of this place, it's quiet and a nice place to relax with a book or a bit of work.
google avatar

Celine F.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee shop with great, quick service! My husband and I love coming here because they are dog friendly as well. Every time we go the barista offers my dog a treat! I've been ordering their maple latte with oat milk which I believe is a seasonal drink. It's a delicious flavor without being overly sweet. They also have a horchata latte that I'd like to try sometime. It is a fairly small space and it can get crowded on the weekends to the point where you might have to take your drink to go unless you want to hover to find a table/seat. I definitely recommend trying Ludlow Charlingtons!

Yelp
This is a cute little tiny coffee shop. I've been in the area when I've been looking for coffee shops since it has shown up in my Yelp search, but I hadn't located it until today. I was only a block or two away so today was the day I got to try it! Of course there are themed coffee shops out there and this has a light theme, of dogs--fancy Victorian era dogs in particular. There's a sign on the window saying that the city won't allow them to have dogs inside but if you have a service animal they're welcome--perhaps their subtle way of telling patrons to say their dog is a service animal since they can't question it? Half the proceeds from their branded merchandise goes toward dog rescue charities and the photos on the wall are inspired by furry friends from their favorite charity. I picked up a pumpkin pie latte and chai latte. The chai was okay; I wouldn't have minded if it had a bit deeper flavor, but I would have it again. I was told that the pumpkin pie latte was EXCELLENT. Obviously the coffee shop that shall not be named has made pumpkin flavored lattes an annual Epic Event but this was better than anything they could produce. I also got an apple danish and raspberry beignet, which were fine. I had a bite of the beignet and I probably liked it better than the danish, although I must say the lamination on the dough for the danish was perfect. The beignet is not a Louisiana-style beignet (so don't say you weren't warned) and it was really good--not too sweet and there was not too much filling. And the jam inside was excellent. Ludlo Charlington's has a Print With Me station, which is handy and would have been useful if I could have remembered what it is that I thought yesterday I needed to have printed. Most of the seating is the counter that runs along the wall and front window; however, there are two tables inside and two outside when the weather permits.

Yelp
Quaint coffee shop with character. The pros are its super creative and coffee is solid. Their chicken sandwich only con is it's really small inside
google avatar

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
Loved this coffee shop! So cute with the dog theme and love that they support dogs that need to get adopted! I got the snickerdoodle latte and it was very tasty! The staff was very friendly as well and my drink came out quick.
google avatar

Claire T.

Yelp
Very sweet place! Not a super huge shop but feels quaint and cozy. I got a latte, my friends got hot chocolate and chai. The chai had "the right amount of spice without being too sweet" and hot chocolate was "rich and creamy." My latte was amazing. We got 8oz which normally feels small but they came in these cute glasses which I loved! I cannot speak for the sweets as I did not try any but my friend said the donuts are amazing. I will have to try when I come back!
google avatar

Sydney D.

Yelp
Got a decaf snickerdoodle latte which was perfect - the decaf espresso was great and it wasn't too sweet. The almond croissant was great (plus bonus points for the dog bowl). Service was friendly and it's a very cute, cozy space.
google avatar

Haley W.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop up in the Lake View/Lincoln Park neighborhood. It's dog themed throughout including decor, pastries served in dog bowls and even dog friendly (which isn't too common in Chicago)! I had the seasonal maple latte which was delicious, not overly sweet but the perfect amount of Autumn/Winter flavor. Definitely recommend stopping in if you are in this area, make sure to bring your furry friend with you too! 5/5 stars, cute place for all you doggo lovers!
google avatar

Paige A.

Yelp
Such a vibe and awesome coffee. The walls are covered in aristocrat dog portraits and it has a dark moody vibe. I got a seasonal latte, which did a great job of being realistic and not overly sweet. I'm excited to go back.
google avatar

Keisha C.

Yelp
I tried the iced snickerdoodle latte. It was amazing. However, I almost gasped out loud when the screen said it was almost $9 before tip. Loved the inside and it looked so so cozy. I would recommend coming here to get a coffee and do some work

Jaz R.

Yelp
Legit coffee. Smooth taste. I got an amazing chai and regular latte. Wish I could order the whole menu. Cute dog photos and merch. Friendly baristas always.
google avatar

Mayuri A.

Yelp
This such a cute little cafe in Lincoln Park. They have great seasonal lattes. We tried the strawberry mocha and the snickerdoodle latte. The strawberry mocha literally tastes like strawberry icecream in a cup. The snickerdoodle latte was great too. The cinnamon wasn't overpowering. The service was fast. The decor is very old school European. This is a dog friendly cafe. I am taking a star off due to lack of food options. They only had a few croissants left even though it was early morning. Pretty sure the croissants were leftovers from the previous day. They have a couple tables for group seating and big table with individual chairs to sit and work from. Overall, a cute little cafe to try great coffee beverages from, but be mindful of the lack of food options.
google avatar

Lynette H.

Yelp
This is the cutest coffee shop! It's small but surprisingly enough seating for a lot of people, my colleagues and I still were able to work comfortable from here this morning. The decor is paw-mazing! I'm obsessed with all of their royal dog portraits!! So regal and hilarious. The coffee and pastries are delish too. I ordered their maple latte and an apple danish (served in a dog bowl!) I wanted three danishes, I'll be honest. It was so good. And the latte art was ON POINT.
google avatar

Simran S.

Yelp
Ludlow has an amazing vibe! Loved the dog theme everywhere, quite cute. The cafe was quite crowded but it wasn't noisy. Really quaint interior that I liked a lot. The coffee was good, got an oat milk latte!
google avatar

Isaac J.

Yelp
Just the cutest little coffee shop with the coolest sort of art deco/modern victorian vibe. This place was classy, upbeat, and was rocking the type of jazz playlist that had me pulling out Shazam the entire time I was there. I had a vanilla London fog which made the top two London fogs I've had in the city, so I will def be back. Fast wifi, friendly staff, plenty of seating, and the temp was somehow perfect, which is so hard to do during Chicago winter
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee spot... perfect for all dog lovers. The pup theme is strong with the artwork at the shop, merch they sell, and more. I ordered the seasonal snickerdoodle latte (12 oz) & it was delicious. WiFi connection was strong & although crowded, there are a good number of seats available. Definitely a shop better suited for quiet work days. I love how this shop gives back to to the pup community!
google avatar

Lana R.

Yelp
This is a funky, cute place with great coffee. We got some of the special lattes and they were super tasty. The place is tiny so on a busy day it's really cramped. The chairs seem to be placed too close together so people sit in every other chair which makes it hard to find a seat. My only other complaint is I ordered a large hot drink, they charged me over $8, and then gave me the same size as my husband's, who ordered a medium and paid $6. I didn't notice until we were on our way out and they were slammed at the bar so I didn't ask about it. Other than that it's a great place to get coffee.
google avatar

Sayuri A.

Yelp
I came here with a friend after our other friend (Leland - check out her yelp review(s)!) recommended this coffee shop and we got 2 of the seasonal lattes (pumpkin pie latte & i got the peppermint mocha). The coffee is really good!! The portraits of the dogs on the walls and the dog bowls that the pastries are served in add a bit of fun to the typical coffee shop experience but the high quality avoids any "gimmicky-"-ness. I love the mission of this coffee shop & will definitely be back.
google avatar

Leland L.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee shop!! It's quiet and peaceful and the seating is perfect for working (lots of outlets!) the music is slow piano jazz which makes great background noise. I enjoyed the matcha I got here to go, but what sets this place apart is the cute mugs they put their "for here" drinks in. It really elevates the experience having your coffee in a glass mug with some pretty latte art. The cappuccino was delicious! Definitely going to make this a new work from home spot!m.
google avatar

Alex I.

Yelp
Cute spot! Kind of stumbled upon it but the decor/theming is definitely the best part. My croissant was a little dry and the dirty chai was nothing special but would come again just to show someone! I love how they have a jug of water and cups so you don't have to ask.
google avatar

Minh P.

Yelp
Ludlow is a cute, quaint coffee shop that has everything you need in a café. There is a fair amount of seating, despite the small-ish size of the space, a menu with all of the classics and then some, and even a printer for your convenience. I came in with another person and we both got chai lattes - the regular and the pumpkin chai. Both were quite good, but tasted very similar. After a side-by-side comparison, the only discernible difference to me was the smell. The pumpkin one smelled... different (stronger?), but not exactly pumpkiny. Not worth the +$1 price tag in my opinion. I liked the chai in general though! Keep in mind that milk alternatives have a +$0.99 upcharge. The interior is moody but quirky, in a dark-academia sort of way. There's a variety of seating - small tables, big round ones, and bar seating by the windows as well. Free wifi is available if you wanted to use the space for work or anything. Despite being rather small, it's not too loud, so it's not hard to have a conversation. Good place for a first date :). Would come again.

Yelp
Every time I come here it is always a pleasant experience. From the service to the products, this cafe is a staple for the area. The staff is always welcoming and has great recommendations if you want to venture out and try new things. The menu is not extensive or overly complicated, and the quality of coffee is shown by that. In my opinion, the price for alternative milk is a bit high. However, its not far off from other places. So I cant knock a star off for that. Definitely recommend the cobbler and horchata lattes.
google avatar

Reynu S.

Yelp
This relatively new, family-owned coffee shop is very cute and unique. Great place to study or work due to muted piano music and ambient coffee noises. There is free wifi and even a printer available for guests! But if your VPN is picky like mine you won't be able to use it - similar browser-based authentication to many other Chicago shops, I'm noticing. Bundle up if you're here on a cold day - the front door is left propped open. The prices are average and the selection of both coffee and pastry is decent. The sources for the dairy and coffee beans are carefully selected. Happy cows produce more nutritious dairy and happy farmers produce the best single-origin coffee. Moreover, 50% of the profits go towards supporting local Chicago dog shelters. I got the macchiato and it was a great standard macchiato to wake me up this morning. My companions got a hot and cold horchata latte, respectively. I don't think horchata + coffee is my thing but they seemed to enjoy it. The barista was a bit cold with me this morning. He was nicer to other patrons, so not sure if something was going on or if he was just tired this morning. We all have those days. But other than that it was a great experience. I'll surely be back if I'm ever in this part of town and need a boost.

Yelp
I've been hunting for great coffee and espresso drinks since moving to Illinois, and this has held top spot since I found it. Great vibe, staff, and every drink I've had is amazing. You can tell their shots are great just in a plain latte, but that quality isn't overpowered in their sweeter drinks like a vanilla or berry pie latte. It's top tier.
google avatar

Steph G.

Yelp
Give this location anything less than five stars and you should go back to Starbucks because you clearly don't understand how great this place is. Just adorable cozy interior with the antique dog picture theme. The mission here is obviously to rescue and foster pets. But also great tea and coffee selections, as well as baked goods. Super friendly staff. Great season drinks. Been here a few times, this is my first review. Give it a try.

Brenda O.

Yelp
Great staff, fun decor (dog portraits with each dogs adoption date ), good flow of costumers coming in. Lots of dog owners & their babies! Amazing dirty chai tea orders are prepared quickly.
google avatar

Sharon T.

Yelp
Great coffee and the best decor! There's a comfortable amount of seating and the atmosphere is very chill and relaxed. The staff is friendly and the service is quick! I thoroughly enjoyed walking through and appreciating all of the adorable dogs on the wall! I got the iced horchata latte, one of their seasonal drinks, and enjoyed the light cinnamon flavor.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
This is a wonderful, small and peaceful coffee shop! I have been walking by for over a year, and it's easy to miss. Once inside, it has a cozy ambiance with a quiet place to read, work, or study. They have free wifi and an assortment of both coffees and pastries. It gives me a really small time vibe in the big city. The customers sitting next to me seemed like regulars since they knew each other and exchanged pleasantries. There were only a few people in shop, but everyone seemed cheerful and remained pretty quiet for those of us working. The barista was super nice and got me my items very promptly. I ordered a latte with vanilla and an apple danish. They were both delicious! The place has a strong dog theme and I got my danish served in a cool custom dog bowl. It was really fun! Not cheap by any means, but pretty on par with what a small local coffee shop should charge. I got a ton of work done and it was exactly what I was looking for! I definitely would recommend it.

Yelp
Happened by here and was pleasantly surprised. Great coffee, hot and fresh! It's a small, quaint, and quiet place to relax, study, read etc. It's clean and the service was fast and friendly. It's a dog themed coffee shop, which is unique as well.

Yelp
I found Ludlow Charlington's by chance and I'm so glad I stopped in while I was wandering around Lincoln Park. This place is a dog lover's dream! The decor is focused around fancy dogs and has a old British pub vibe that I loved. If it was a little closer, I could happily work here. The almond croissant was really good and the hot chocolate was some of the best I've had in Chicago. The best part was that food was served in a ceramic dog bowl. Perfectly on theme! The staff here are all super friendly and made me feel very welcome. The atmosphere is great, the seating is plentiful, and there are lots of outlets available for charging up your laptop or phone. I can't wait to return!
google avatar

Suhani A.

Yelp
This place is very dimly lit and has the cutest dog themed vibe! Loved their Hazelnut beignet!
google avatar

Louise J.

Yelp
Dog friendly and delicious. The decor is cozy and the outside seating is a plus - your pup can join you in the outing.
google avatar

Abi A.

Yelp
I have been here 3 times in the last week. I love love the snickerdoodle latte. The decor is so cute, it looks like an amazing place to work!! The staff are just so so lovely and caring!

Yelp
Great coffee! Cute for a quick coffee and connection. I wish there was soft seating otherwise I would have stayed all day reading.
