The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes in Ferndale, Michigan | Eater Detroit

"Luisa’s serves a primarily Italian menu with influences from South America and the Middle East, that’s entirely made from scratch and offers the grab-and-go convenience of being “street food.” Sandwiches are served in piadina, a traditional unleavened Italian flatbread from Romagna, or in cascione, a stuffed dough that is sealed and griddled. There are also rotating soups, salads, and Mexican-inspired corn dumplings, which resemble gnocchi. The restaurant also has rotating slushies in flavors such as mixed berry lemonade and peach iced tea. Keep an eye on the hours as they shift throughout the week. Online ordering is available." - Courtney Burk

I’ve had this place in my “want to go” list since they opened, I’m so happy I finally made it! I got the summer prosciutto and it was absolutely packed with fresh greens, cheese and prosciutto. It is absolutely worth the price and can easily be split. The in store menu didn’t have casciones, so I’m not sure if their menu is rotating, but I definitely want to go back and try other options!

Luis‘s restaurant is in an easy to get to place in downtown Ferndale at Woodward and nine Mile, so after a walk-through the rest it was easy to decide to come here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We had heard about this restaurant from some local friends and then a short presentation from the business owner Luisa at 1 million cups and decided to give it a try. I ordered the dill pickle soup, which was hot and delicious and very tangy… Delicious! I wanted the super salad, But they were missing some of the main ingredients so Luisa offered to make me a custom salad with the same dressing and charged a few dollars less. Great customer service! And the salad was absolutely fantastic. Dijon mustard face dressing complemented the doll potato soup perfectly. my partner got the chicken and potato calzone, which was extremely comforting the creamy mushroom sauce, the cheddar gruyere, Mushroom medley and chicken and potatoes. Their mushroom melody is made up of Cremini, white button, portobello, and oyster mushrooms… The perfect land! The calzone dough was crispy and soft, and then warmed on a griddle. Ended up sharing it. It was so big. It was a delicious lunch overall. We ate in the small but cute restaurant space, and Luisa came and visited with us for a few minutes and offered a shortbread and caramel sauce cookie before we left. Highly recommend eating here. The prices are great, atmosphere is chill and the jazzy music complimented our meal. We hear there is a robust carry out business & they’re open every day except Monday. Check their website for updated hours 22851 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale They also do catering and set you up for prep weekly meal plans for busy folks who are doing that!

The food was delicious, and the staff was nice and helpful. The songs were fun and the place was cute! Unless it's summer, probably not suited to groups more than 4 or 5. I had the chicken maffe and corn dumplings. They were so good! My friend had the grilled cheese and it was also very good. The chicken was juicy and the dumplings were flavorful. I have leftovers to take home & it was a great price. I will be back!

Google
Always looking for new unique places with great food. Luisa's was outstanding! Had the spicy chicken piadina, and the bone broth ham soup. Both excellent. The pita oozed freshness and had the right balance of protein, veggies and sauce. We will be back.

We stopped in on a whim today for lunch. Wow, so good. I had the loaded steak cascione and my husband got the sausage cascione- both were fantastic! The flatbread was the perfect thickness, and it was served so hot! We sat outside on their cute patio and the service was great, the owner check on us and was so pleasant! We also got to try the house made lemonade that has chia seeds in it! It was unmatched… Don’t skip that, perfect for a hot day! We ate our meal so fast, I wish I took a picture to accompany this review. Enjoy!

Got a tuna salad and power salad. Tuna was bathed in mayo, power salad had no lemon zest, NO SWEET POTATO, and a drip of mango dressing combined with no kale, and 90% spring mix. Utter disappointment.

We recently stopped in to Luisa's to meet a friend and were incredibly impressed with the atmosphere and hospitality that greater us. The staff made some amazing recommendations for our drinks and food and we didn't have to wait long before having some absolutely delicious lunches. Will absolutely be stopping back in anytime we're in Ferndale!

I just ate here for lunch (got to go food) and had the coconut avocado house smoothie while waiting for my order. Cute place. Friendly service. I got a spinach, mozzarella and Italian sausage cascione (stuffed and griddled homemade flatbread) which was fantastic!!! I also got the grilled ham and cheese with the cheddars Gruyère with black truffles - also really good! (No judging me for my big order 😂) I would definitely go back. They also have pre-packaged to go items (soups, salads, sandwiches) that also looked good. Located next to Inyo but not big signage yet.

Yelp
The food here is awesome and fresh and taste amazing! The service is great and everyone is friendly! Best sandwhiches around!

Yelp
This place is GREAT! Ordered several things for delivery and all were amazing. Dill pickle soup.. a must try. It's a bit heavy so you don't need a lot, but very very good. The prosciutto Prada was excellent, and my friend enjoyed their meals as well, the Mediterranean chicken piada. Will come back.

Yelp
Wandered in here on a rainy day. They were very welcoming and lovely. We got a couple of their pita sandwiches which were delicious and flavorful. Such a cute place, can't wait to go back in warmer weather they can open up their outdoor seating. But I'll definitely be back sooner than that too.

Yelp
Little hole in the wall but wow! Tasty food, lots of cool choices for drinks and desserts, nice owners! Seating not really comfy but there's always take away! Everything locally sourced and home made.

Yelp
Looking for a great lunch spot in the area, we came across Luisa's and it didn't disappoint! We loved the sandwiches on beautiful and fresh baked bread. The ambiance was calm and cozy. The service was prompt and super friendly. A hidden gem of Luisa's was the iced coffee. I've tried iced coffee all over the Ferndale area, and I honestly think Luisa's was the best. It was light, tasty, refreshing, and flavorful. Without question, I would go to Luisa's again!

Yelp
This restaurant is a necessary addition to the Ferndale food scene, awesome homemade food. I tried the south american style corn dumplings and they were fantastic, hearty and delicious. The Potato dill soup is also worthy of a mention. I like the variety of cultures portrayed on the menu, giving every dish something unique in terms of flavor. There is certainly something for everyone here! When i went, they were sold out of the vegan tuna salad but i would definitely be interested to come back and try it. Definitely worth a stop in when you're in the area!

Yelp
We discovered Luisa's recently and are thrilled to have found them. The food is flavor-packed and I can personally speak for the corn dumplings and mole chili-they are flavor BOMBS.

Yelp
My mom and I went in on a tuesday around 2, so it wasn't busy, and the service was great :) I love the art all around the store and the music added to the fun vibe. There were plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, and the sandwiches are soooo good, as well as the corn dumplings. I totally recommend!

Yelp
This place just opened and it did not disappoint. I wanted a quick lunch and this hit the spot! Inside is wonderfully decorated but a little small, it is mainly kitchen space. However there is a nice bench/patio area outside as well. I ordered a cascione which I learned is basically an Italian empanada according to the owner who is incredibly nice. The cascione was delicious! It is hand made and baked to order. While you get delicious and a freshly savory baked good, it does take a little bit of time so I waited ~10 min after ordering to get food. Overall it was a great meal with a lot of flavor and it didn't feel like a heavy meal. I would go again!

Yelp
Love this little shop! I came in for a quick bite to eat and that's exactly what I got. Everything came out as expected. It was a cold rainy day when I went in and the place smelled delicious and the food tasted so good. It's so bright and airy in there. I sat at a high top table and watched traffic come down Woodward. The service was great, they were so nice and answered all my questions.

Yelp
Went there on a Friday, had a mediterranean wrap. It was amazing, place is a little unknown even though it's on Woodward. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Very interesting place, and hard to find. But worth the effort. The menu is simple, but tales a while to grasp your first visit. Basically they have fresh made pizza-like dough with which they make calzones-like things or sandwiches. Except its not baked, its on a griddle. Plus they have other things, including soups, hearty rice dishes, and lots of desserts. My wife found this place and we decided to venture out, Finding it is a bit challenging, primarily due to the road construction. You park in back and you walk between the buildings to find it. Just look for the big sign on the building. Once you find it, figuring ot the menu is the next hurdle. But the owner is very nice and helpful and gladly explains the menu. We ordered the loaded steak calzone like thing and a korean sandwich. Plus we got a side of the coconut corn and the pancetta loaded dumplings. And boy was everything tasty. The coconut corn has a very interesting texture, but is highly addicting. The dumplings my wife loved, me - not so much. Overall very delicious. I watched others eat simpler sandwiches, and I need to come back and try more items. Everything appears to me made onsite from scratch. Ambiance: this place has a great vibe. The word artisanal suits it perfectly. They have a lot of items not only behind the counter, but also in other parts of the store, so it can get as bit overwhelming. It is a narrow and tight place, but has enough tables for a few dozen diners. Most people were dining in when I was there. Glad we ventured out to find this place. will definitely be on the regular rotation of restaurants!

Yelp
Lovely and a bit eccentric. The unique selection of food was a delight, and my choices did not disappoint! The Spicy Mole Chile and Tuna Melt Piadini were wonderful. While my lunch partner didn't eat, she encouraged me to write a 5 Star review simply because of the ambience.

Yelp
Absolutely banging! Food is fresh and the vibes are very welcoming. Luisa is a great woman and chef. I will be back to explore more of the menu!

Yelp
I had lunch there today with a few friends wanting to introduce them to this interesting little lunch place. It's the fourth time I've eaten there with friends and have never been disappointed. When they first opened maybe 6 months ago the menu was rather limited and hours even more so but since then they have expanded both and you have to be prepared to wait for a seat because it can get pretty busy at lunch we occupied the one table that comfortably fit for and there are just a few that fit two people so you might think about carryout from the place rather than dining in. You order at the counter and then they bring your food to you and it's always outstanding and not the kind of food you would find at many other lunch places around. The owner and staff are very friendly and want you to be a happy customer.

Yelp
Great food and friendly service. Everything was fresh and delicious. Dined in this time, but would also be great carry out. We will be back again soon.

Yelp
Delicious food. Great space. Unique menu items that you won't find anywhere else. I really loved it. The restaurant is a little hard to find the first time, but definitely worth the trip. I will be back. I had a piadini and one of their soups. Both were excellent.

Yelp
I finally stopped in here and it was so good! The ambiance was pleasant, staff were super friendly, and the food was delicious. We ordered cacione and loved them. We saw the dough being made fresh and they were stuffed with yummy, well seasoned ingredients. And they were very easy to eat. I love a handheld that isn't messy! The owner also gave us a sample of her fresh fruit slushy and it was also delicious. I'm adding this restaurant to my regular rotation and can't wait to try more menu items. Their specials looked really good too!

Yelp
I got the meat muffalata sandwich, dumplings, peasant soup and coconut corn, and EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS!! Homemade. Fresh. Interesting dishes. This is gourmet food! In a convenient, unassuming location at Woodward and Nine Mile in downtown Ferndale. So many other things I want to try on the menu. The staff is friendly and nice.

Yelp
