OMG, the best Chile Relleno I have ever had! How they managed to keep the batter so light and crisp even though it was smothered in a creamy tomato sauce is pure wizardry! Inside the poblano pepper was lots of ooey gooey melted cheese. It was served with freshly made tortillas for soaking up the delicious sauce. Definitely a winner!
Thanks to Yelpers for pointing me to Luis's Taqueria, one of so many outstanding Mexican taquerias in Woodburn. Located in the downtown area, you can safely eat there at the tables spread far apart in their large dining area. Festively decorated with deep red walls and vibrant piñatas hanging from the ceiling, I enjoyed the atmosphere. You can also order take out and they advertised delivery.
Since it was my first time here, deciding was challenging! I stopped in for dinner, was super hungry, and because of the intoxicating aroma I wanted everything! Opted for the aforementioned chile relleno, one carnitas taco, and chicken enchiladas a la cart since I'm not really into rice and beans.
With the intent of eating some there while it was fresh and hot, and taking the remainder home for the next nights dinner, I ordered at the counter, took my number and grabbed a table. Within a few minutes a server brought out my dishes and as soon as I saw the chili relleno, I knew I as going for that first. Soooooo good. And rich! I ate half and was excited knowing I could have the other half the next day!
The taco was larger in size than a street taco, and for $3.50 that makes sense. I'm a huge street taco fan preferring a home made tortilla, protein with cilantro, onion and lime. Done. This is exactly how theirs are served, the homemade tortilla definitely a standout! Unfortunately the carnitas were very dry, surprisingly, with none of the typical fatty, juicy pieces of pork. To make it work I went to squeeze the lime to add much needed juice, but it had none! Meaning, it was a fresh lime but dry. I'm sure this was just a fluke as all reviews rave about their tacos so I will try again. That being said, I'm glad I only ordered one.
The chicken enchiladas were different from any I've ever had. I choose enchiladas for the warm sauce over corn tortillas and flavorful filling, usually topped with melted cheese. These had no melted cheese but instead were topped with shredded lettuce, sour cream and pico di gallo, a topping typically found on a crisp chimichanga. I didn't care for all of this cold produce in top of the enchilada; it added no flavor value whatsoever. Would not get again.
The waitress who brought out my food was so sweet, friendly, and followed all protocols, wearing gloves and a mask. She brought me extra napkins, water and takeout boxes with a smile.
plenty of parking on the street out front or in side street. Just a few minutes from I-5 Woodburn exit.
Even though my dinner was a combo of hit and miss, I still give them 4 stars and will definitely will be back. I'll stick with the chile relleno and will try a chimichanga, burrito or a carne asada plate next time.
