"Luke’s mission is as simple as it is admirable: to make life easier for busy professionals, working moms, stay-at-home dads, and everyone in between. There are meal plans and pre-packed lunchboxes—all prepped by professional chefs using nutritious, sustainable ingredients (there’s even a house butcher, so you know exactly where your meat comes from) and curated meal kits if you’re feeling ambitious. They’ll also stock your pantry and fridge with à la carte groceries or seasonal “bundles,” and can also deliver gourmet care packages, which make for a great gift."

Such a charming neighborhood spot! Freshly made sandwiches, good coffee, and everything feels so inviting. The flowers and fruits are super fresh, and the grab-and-go options look delicious, too. Perfect for a quick coastal picnic or a laid-back lunch.

I had fun coming here , I loved the cola Kambucha and their BLT sandwich was fantastic (perfectly grilled and crispy bacon 😋). Variety of stuff and they have a great floral selection. They also have a great wine selection.

Everyone at Luke’s is friendly and the quality of the produce is fabulous! They have a small but well stocked meat department which includes my husband’s all time favorite….Bison. We also enjoy their premade guacamole and pesto salads. Please support this neighborhood gem.

Google
Where do I get started on this place?? Prestige, honor, luxury, utility... these are the defining qualities and values that one can come to expect in this establishment. The clientelle speaks for itself in line with the imagery of Luke's regulars boasting over the lowely Safeway peasants in their uppity cow hollow estates. In Luke's you can find the taste of luxury one would come to expect on the other side of Lombard as employees carry themselves with an underlying confidence that inspires excellence throughout the produce and braised lamb section. With the introduction of new revenue streams such as t shirts and hoodies and 25 different kinds of sodas good for your gut below $15, Luke's has just the right amount of selection for all your essential needs (our nanny can get the rest).

I got a Ashbury sandwich, and a caramel latte. It’s surprisingly SO fresh, flavorful and delicious ! The people were so patient and nice to me Highly recommend coming here

Google
Stopped by Luke's local because I needed some food real quick after the holidays. It wasn't until after I got home I noticed both the bags of Josie's Organic salad kits were past their best buy date. One turned out ok, but the other was definitely spoiled. They don't give you receipts at Luke's unless you specifically ask for one, so I couldn't even go back and return them. This experience makes me think they're not checking expiration dates on a lot of their merchandise. With the Bi-Rite being pretty close now, I don't see a reason to come back here.

Google
Wildly disappointing breakfast burrito. My partner picked me up a burrito cause they were well reviewed and i thought it was a frozen burrito! Must skip

Got the SF Italian on ciabatta and it was delicious! Didn't feel too heavy and was the right sub for sunday afternoon

Yelp
Top notch quality produce, fabulous guacamole, pesto salads, and friendly service. I love Luke's! Please support his wonderful neighborhood store.

Yelp
Luke's is only a couple blocks from me so I end up going out of convenience. However, there are some things here that are well worth the higher price point. Their sandwich's are amazing and made to order! Make sure to ask for a stamp card bc you get a free sandwich after 10 stamps. Also I always keep the frozen cookie dough in my freezer for when I'm craving something sweet! I like to cook them to have a fresh baked cookie but my roommate enjoys the cookie dough raw. Probably not recommend but oh well haha! I think most of the food here is local and organic. They definitely don't carry standard brands and you'll most likely find the cleaner version of specific foods. I think they also do wine samples on Fridays!

Yelp
Imagine a mini-Whole Foods local neighborhood market. This well stocked space in Cow Hollow offers a great selection of quality fresh meats, local fruits, veggies, and prepared in-house foods. They also have a convenient sandwich and coffee counter. Checkout the day-old bread deals located near the cash registers. You can get rarely discounted (anywhere in the city) day old Rize Up bread here. It may be yesterday's baked bread, but is still pretty darn good. And it is one of the most written about local breads discussed in foodie review blogs today - and for good reason. Convenience and quality come at a cost and is reflected in the prices you will find here. Price issues aside, Luke's is an ideal small local neighborhood market to check off those grocery items from your shopping list. It doesn't get much better than this. The founder and namesake Luke Chappell's parents founded the first commercial natural herbal toothpaste - Tom's of Maine in the 1970's. I happen to have a tube sitting on my bathroom counter right now! I like their toothpaste because the ingredients are sourced and derived from nature, with formulas that are free of artificial flavors, fragrances, colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. Most of the company's products are vegan.

Yelp
Luke's Local is a conveniently-located grocery store right on Union. It's not very big but has pretty much everything you'd need. They have to-go sandwiches as well but they take forever to get. They have good quality groceries but they're really pricy. They do have some local brands which is nice. Service is just okay, not super friendly.

Yelp
Worst service, no sense of urgency. About 8 people working and no ability to help the customer. All I wanted was a BLT I got there early about 8am nobody in line. Multiple staff stared at me and ignored me. About 8:15 I decided I could still make it to Starbucks and get everything in time for work at 8:30 the location on Washington Square is much better they are kind there and go above and beyond.

Yelp
I walk by here all the time so decided to grab a sandwich and finally try it out. They have a window outside so ordering is convenient. I ordered The # 960, which has rye bread, pastrami, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, onion, thousand Island and pickles. I got it to go and ate it at a park in the city, but there was so much liquid that the bread got super soggy and it was a mess to eat. I liked the pastrami but overall I would not recommend this particular sandwich.

Yelp
The service of the deli is still less than satisfactory. The breakfast burrito cost $9 three months ago now cost $11. That is steep price increase for a small / palm size breakfast burrito.
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
Like others mentioned this is a smaller version of Whole Foods--prior to Amazon control. Found the quality of meats at the butcher counter excellent and fruit good. Limited variety of items/brands, however sufficient for a neighbor market.

Will D.

Yelp
Great value at the deli counter. The rotisserie chicken sandwich is hands down one of the best sandwiches in San Francisco

Yelp
Ordered a cubano. Opened it immediately right after it was handed to me to have lunch there and oh boy, it was a wet soggy mess. Also the smallest sandwich I've had in SF lol. I can't imagine what it would have looked like if I waited and took it home (10 min walk home). I would not order this again- so many other places with better sandwiches.

Yelp
I am beyond frustrated with my recent visit to Luke's Grocery. After making a purchase, I was also owed a credit/change for a returned milk bottle purchase from a few weeks back. I encountered the most infuriating customer service I've ever experienced. The checker looked at me and said, "I can't get into the register; I need a manager," and then just stood there! I thought she would at least go get someone to help, but instead, we ended up in a ridiculous staring standoff. It was weird and confusing. To make matters worse, she started using another register to assist other customers while I was left waiting. I asked, "Are you going to get someone? Do you have a key to the register?" and she replied, "No, only a manager does." Seriously? Then another employee came behind the counter, and when I asked if she could get a manager, she walked to the back but when she came back, she just looked at the checker and said, "There's no manager, there's no one here." I ended up leaving. No apologies, nothing. This is unacceptable! It's not about the $0.46 (I couldn't care less); it's about the utter lack of initiative, problem-solving, and basic customer service from not one, but TWO employees! They did nothing to resolve my issue, communicate properly or even attempt to help. If your staff can't execute basic retail troubleshooting and provide even a modicum of human interaction, they shouldn't be working with the public. Love the store and the items but would rather drive to Safeway Fillmore and deal with the mayhem in there than ever deal with another encounter like this. Do better, Luke's Grocery!

Yelp
Nice ambience and great service! A spot to grab a quick bite and eat at the tables outside if the weather is nice. I got the trippy Turkey - I enjoyed it as it had actual Turkey breast (not processed). Only thing is that the Dijon mustard was too overpowering and the Turkey was just a bit on the drier side. I would still come back to try the other sandwiches
google avatar

Kelsey R.

Yelp
Great local market that has a ton of gluten/dairy free options. I found these wholesome bakery cookies that are amazing! Can't believe there is no dairy in the filling. Also have good sandwiches and coffee.
google avatar

Maureen W.

Yelp
Solid sandwich spot in Cow Hollow but be prepared for a 20-30 minute wait to get your food on a busy day. You order outside at the curbside window and they have a wide variety of sandwiches and breakfast foods to choose from Sandwich itself was super tasty and I loved the strong mustard they used. But taking away one star because the wait was a bit too long for what you're getting
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
I really liked this place for a couple of months. I thought the chorizo bfast burrito was pretty good for the price. I loved the sightglass cold brew for cheap! The last time I went though, I waited about 30 minutes for a cold burrito to come out. Granted I've never had any of their lunch deli sandwiches, I just can't afford to go back knowing that I might have to wait that long for a sub par menu item. Maybe I'll make it back for the coffee but idk about breakfast anymore.

Yelp
Received a nice comment from Kayleigh, the COO, about my sandwich snafu. I'm happy she's addressing the innocent malfunction of my missing order. She even had offered me a complimentary sandwich for the future. Really not necessary, Kayleigh. I'm in the store almost daily for something and get a delicious sandwich or carryout food 3x a week. I posted the review not out of spite, but rather an incidental occurrence. I also work in the customer service profession, I've come to understand the importance of hospitality. And helpful criticism. I hopefully will have much more pleasant experiences here.

Yelp
Super adorable little coffee shop! It's normally a nice grocery market but they also have a window where you can get drinks and sandwiches. I got the vanilla latte which tasted great but not super special either. While I waited for my order I looked around the store and saw some great knick knacks. Haven't had a chance to try their food but everything looked absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

Yelp
In pure transparency: I didn't purchase anything from their incredible prepared foods section or a sandwich from their delicious looking sammy menu. I was however impressed by this gourmet market regardless. It's bright, clean and beautiful. Stock full of high end groceries (and not so much high end) with a lean on local. I picked up some delicious cookies from a local SF bakery and they weren't super expensive (not cheap, tho). I also ordered up 2 coffees from their coffee bar and well, those were really good. My iced mocha was incredible and my husband mentioned his cold brew with a shot was quality. Neither broke the bank either for specialty coffee. The prepared foods, from meatloaf and meatballs to fried chicken and vegetables looked incredible, but next time. A nice wine section, a nice butcher. If this was my local market, it'd be a splurge, but what a convenient and nice splurge it would be. Bonus points: They are so nice here. Customer service was five stars - from service with a smile and nice conversation, to a guy literally stopping what he was doing to walk and show me those cookies I mentioned... definitely a high end store with high end service. ** Checked out their website, and looks like the founder, Luke, is the son of the founders of Tom's of Maine and runs his value based business ethically and with a focus on local and community: Pretty awesome!

Yelp
Just had a bad experience this morning on Union. Ordered a flat white which should have taken all of five minutes. I waited *twenty minutes*. When I tasted it, it was literally old coffee with hot milk in it. Terrible. I've had the Sightglass flat white before and it's delicious. This was awful. I just walked away and threw it in the garbage. Also the guys behind the counter could have cared less who was getting coffee. The orders just piled up on the counter as they came out, barely audible that someone's order was ready. There's this kind of defiantly slow, passive aggressive service that exists in SF and unfortunately it's here. Will not return. Hire nice people! It's not hard.

Yelp
Some like to dub Luke's the Erewhon of SF, but I digress since the only similar characteristic is their price tag. I purchased their chilled sesame noodles and pesto pasta salad-with all sauced items you would expect there to be oil and seasoning, but this was outright repulsive. The pesto pasta salad was swimming in oil where it could've been used in a separate pasta dish, and the sesame noodles were also drenched in oil. Both the quality of the products were giving Whole Foods/Safeway, but the excessive oil and badly engineered containers are off putting-even Erewhon wouldn't do those things!
google avatar

Yelp
This was really good: -Chocolove -SMOOTH+CREAMY MILK CHOCOLATE Also: This brand of pasta is delicious -Pasta di Semola di Grano Duro (Makes for a really good penna a la vodka) Gotta come back for the sandwiches

Yelp
Right down the street from my office and made with fresh ingredients. I got the rotisserie chicken sandwich and it was delicious. The red cabbage slaw was amazing inside the sandwich and I don't even like slaw. It's a small market with the sandwich window facing the street. There's even a little area with benches to enjoy your food. They have something called hots which was explained as a spicy spread. I opted for nice spicy. Next I will try the meatball sandwich, I bet it's amazing.
google avatar

Savanah L.

Yelp
One of the best cubanos I've had. The service was super fast and the sandwich practically melted in my mouth. Definitely add this place on your list of sandwich stops - I can't wait to come back and try more!

Emily H.

Yelp
Great local store with fresh products. A little on the expensive side but worth it! Hand made sandwiches are well priced. Sometimes the wait at the window for coffee or sandwiches is lengthy and no acknowledgment that there is someone waiting. However locals know the drill. Just wait.

Yelp
Their deli food is really good. I especially like their sesame noodles for a quick lunch. The thing that I LOVE though is their chocolate chip cookie dough. It comes pre-portioned in 12 cookies and they're the best chocolate chip cookies ever. I buy the dough and keep it in my freezer and in 15 min I have a fresh chocolate chip cookie. The ambiance is good, they have a good selection for a local grocer. Also, their cashiers are always extremely nice and helpful. The only thing is it's a little expensive.

Isobel A.

Yelp
I like the one in Cole Valley but this place was depressing. The shopping trolly was absolutely covered in layers of dust , as they all were, which I found disgusting in a food store. Everything is very expensive, and if they offered unusual items that would somewhat understandable but most of the food is pretty standard. The pesto pasta I brought was sitting in oil and did not taste good. More than anything, the guy at the check-out was so rude, almost deliberately so. I saw his name but would feel bad calling him out here. He did not respond to me when I said hello and seemed really angry that he had to work at the grocery store. I asked for a bag and he told me he would give me two and then charged me for both when I did not ask for two bags. Most of the people behind the counter seemed to be heading out to smoke around the corner continuously. Bi Rite is just such a better place with kind people.
google avatar

Tash P.

Yelp
First the good things: - great selection of fresh produce at not unreasonable prices (esp relative to other options in the area) - great selection of gluten and dairy free products - great corner location with outdoor seating - fresh sushi The not good: - the tall male butcher who works the meat counter is OPENLY HOSTILE to customers. I dread having to walk past and certainly do not purchase anything from his counter. This person should not be in a customer facing role. - the checkout line is often full of people browsing the drinks and gf/df snacks section. I get that it's a small store but perhaps some signage or moving some of these products elsewhere would keep the lines moving? - flowers are v pricey.

Yelp
Clearly a great place for the locals (excuse the pun) to enjoy fresh deli foods and friendly staff. Even the line went by quick. I very much recommend the shortbread cookies!!! I had a major craving for sweets...or just wanted something to nibble on..and this seemed like a "good idea". They were amazing. Big thumbs up for some yumminess. The store is well stocked and was very clean as well.

Yelp
Opened just this weekend, this brand new grocery store/deli fills a much-needed void that Real Foods left behind. Real Foods who? A big warm welcome to Luke's Local!! You'll find quality grocery items here and friendly employees. Of course, it's brought to you from the same folks of Luke's Local in Cole Valley. Think Humphry Slocombe ice cream, Alter Eco chocolates and Lady Falcon coffee. If you're passing through during lunch and need a deli sandwich, or on the way home and need some Five Dot steaks or Four Stars Seafood (sustainable) to put on the grill, they've got you covered too. And don't forget to grab a Wise Son's braided Challah or even better yet, a loaf of Acme sourdough or a Jane fig and walnut loaf. This place has so many popular local favorites all under one roof! Bay Area folks are always saying how much they want and miss local businesses like this. Well, you've got to support these guys if you want them to stick around!! This is a GREAT place for both everyday and specialty items and definitely 100% my kind of grocery store!! Please, SUPPORT LOCAL. And support Luke's Local!! TIP: Order your Thanksgiving dinner here!

Yelp
What a strange and unhappy place they take price gouging to another level they take it exponentially Bianco hardware and it's just crazy. It's one thing to buy groceries for your family or yourself or loved ones. It's another thing to get completely ripped off enough said.

R. P.

Yelp
Just bought two things, their pre-packaged deli chicken salad and a bottled pineapple coconut juice. When I sat down to have them I noticed the "best by" date on the salad was 5/11 - 6 days ago! And then I checked the juice, "use by 5/16". Nice going Luke!

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I was thrilled to find a store with a few vegan options. I bought cheese and yogurt. The yogurt cost about $8. I checked the date on the yogurt and it had a best before date three weeks out. I had a long walk back to my hotel so I was very unhappy when I opened the yogurt and found brown mold over much of the surface. I tried to contact customer service but they did not respond. I am unlikely to shop there again as this was so disappointing. I am finding it tough to be vegan in SF .

Yelp
I guess rainy days call for a quick stop at Luke's. My friend and I were looking to get some lunch but didn't want to go far due the rain, so we ended up here. The market is undoubtedly homey and charming, and it has just about everything you'd need in a pinch. The thing that was meh for me was the service. The lady at the coffee stand/outside window was very confused, and I'm assuming she started not too long ago. We went back and forth as I asked questions about the menu and she didn't seem like she knew a lot of information. I ended up going with the Breakfast Sandwich but after I paid, she informed me that they were out of them...so I opted for the Vegan Breakfast Burrito. It was a bummer because the burrito was cheaper than the sandwich so I feel like I got a little jipped there. The burrito was just okay. A bit underseasoned and on the smaller side but I appreciated that it packed in the veggies. Fingers crossed they have the sammie next time!

Yelp
We were staying at the Chelsea Inn and this grocery store is just a few short blocks away.  It's not big but there's plenty of basics as well as fancy items you can get here.  If you like butter cookies their buttery shortbread cookies are absolutely worth trying (at $5.99 for a pack of 6 squares it's a bargain compared with some of the other pricier cookies that are not necessarily as outstanding).  They also make sandwiches to order so we tried the BLT and the Bahn Mi, both pretty good although the latter seemed to be missing some listed ingredients such as cilantro (they apparently ran out of some ingredients at the end of a busy Friday).  There is some outdoor seating right in front on the sidewalk as well as in the curb lane so it's possible to eat on site.

KJ T.

Yelp
Luke's Local is the place to be if you need whole and ground spices, wines, oils, and last minute flowers. However, if you want fresh produce and meats/seafoods at reasonable prices, look no further than your local farmers' market. Luke's stocks their produce area with out of season brussels sprouts (which, by the way, are brown and mushy), overpriced stone fruit, and wilted green onions. Your best bets in this aisle are ginger and red/white/yellow onions. The meat and seafood sections are too saturated with expensive cuts of meats including filet mignon (why this became so pricey is beyond me because it's not tender and has little flavor) as well as chicken that is dried out because their stock is not being sold. The fish is always past its prime, evoking slicks of wetness a la Whole Foods which aids in bacterial growth and the scallops always smell like ammonia. Skip the tiny, expensive rotisserie chickens and flavorless sandwiches. Instead of getting coffee here, support Epicurean Trader and Saint Frank.

Yelp
My go-to sandwich spot in the marina & cow hollow area. Love the options, quality of ingredients, and filling to bread ratio. Only complaint is that it can take a while from ordering to receiving the sandwich because they're pretty popular and the kitchen prep area is small
google avatar

Yelp
5 stars for the fellas at the checkout corner. Always there with a smile. Between 2 and 5 stars for their prepared salads/meals. Sometimes amazing, sometimes not, and kinda pricey depending on the value. Do I keep coming back to see what they've come up with? Guilty as charged. (: My favorites? Why, thanks for asking! The noodle dishes and anything with their salmon! YUM and super filling. Some of the salads seem sparse for the price, but they do include great ingredients that are unique, tasty, and sourced smart. As we've come to expect in San Francisco! Grocery options, butcher, and produce are delicious and full of great variety. All in all a solid 'always have something great to pick up, perfect for coffee or lunch date' spot! PS The eponymous Luke gets 5 stars too. I remember when Luke was selling takeaway meals (burritos, maybe?) from the bars I worked at many many many moons ago. He was always an awesome and kind dude. I recently moved back to the Bay, saw his stores and am so happy for the success.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this neat grocery store off of Union & Fillmore. The front of the store is very appealing & welcoming. This area of SF is clean & doesn't smell bad. Everything inside this store is neatly organized. I purchased one of each of the available four flavors of the flan that's made locally in San Francisco. They were delicious!

Jay B.

Yelp
I can't stand Luke's Local. There will be no line to order a sandwich and they still make you stand there and wait upwards of 5-10 minutes before even taking your order. It's happened every time I go and it drives me absolutely crazy. Meanwhile the manager is standing there chatting in the aisles with people. The price gouging that takes place there is also next level. Their cheapest loaf of bread is $8! Luke if you're reading this, your establishment is a running joke amongst our friend group. If the service sucks somewhere, someone will say "at least it's better than Luke's..." I really wish someone would open up a grocery store right next to them...

Yelp
Went to the walk up window to order a sandwich at 2:30 today (saturday): Right after the 2 customers in front of me finished placing their order which took a while, the employee taking the orders went to "close the coffee bar" even though no one was at the coffee bar station, and even though he was aware that there were 2 people in line ready to order sandwiches. He said that the employees making sandwiches would be "right with us" after we asked whether they were still accepting orders. We waited at the window for about 8 minutes and no one else came. Soon a line of 3 other parties joined the line behind us. Both i and the customer behind me left the line since it seemed that the window station for placing orders was unattended and no one cared enough to take our order. Terrible service and prioritization of responsibilities in store, a decline from past experiences. Seems like there are similar experiences in other reviews where the window wait is unreasonably long

Ben L.

Yelp
Sandwich window Totally understaffed and waited at the front of the line for 10+ minutes (not sure how long it will be because I'm still in line waiting and had time to write this review) just to wait for someone to take order. Got a "will be right with you" 3 times. Not even busy, no one was in line in front of me and 1 other waiting for their order.
google avatar

Brooke F.

Yelp
Had a great tofu bon mi! Wish there was a little more spicy mayo but other than that the flavors of some spice mixed with fresh cucumber really hit the stop. Always love coming here, walking the aisles and seeing what new health foods or drinks I can consume

Ken w.

Yelp
I bought a jar of yogurt along with few other items, when I tried having the yogurt the next morning, I found that the plastic seal was already broken and the yogurt smelled sour. This is not the first time, previously, I bought a loaf of Wise Sons bread and discovered that it was moldy after I got home. The quality control is unacceptable. The place doesn't seem to be well managed with too much goofing around by the staff. I sometimes hear staff goofing around and cursing when I open the refrigerator door. A grocery store is nice to have. I hope Luke's survives.

Alexandra D.

Yelp
Overpriced and extremely unfriendly. Everyone who works here is super unfriendly and has an attitude. Not what you'd expect from the local neighborhood grocer. Too bad! I live in the neighborhood, gave them lots of business and dozens of shots but will now take my business elsewhere. Over the snub!
google avatar

Yelp
Love Luke's Local!!! Friendly staff, great selection and delicious prepared food!! I have had their breakfast sandwich and oat milk latte - both amazing!! Definitely a great spot to stop by for breakfast! They also have a great selection of local foods - all of my favs are here! I have also bought fresh fish and prepared meals / deli items from behind the counter. All are fresh and well made! The ingredients in the prepared sides are also all great!! No bad extra ingredients in them! Highly recommend for breakfast, prepared meals and a fun local selection of goods!

Yelp
I have food allergies but the Deli team helped me find foods that I can buy without gluten and dairy and worked around my food allergies. Very helpful and kind

S. P.

Yelp
The food is good. Overpriced but good! Service well, staff acts downright arrogant and is just unhelpful ... you won't even get a hello or thank you here
google avatar

Desiree C.

Yelp
The 960 sandwich and Italian sandwich are 4 stars. Experience was two stars. Staff was unfriendly and forgot my order. 4 or 5 people who stood behind me in line got their sandwiches before me. I asked about mine after I saw a couple folks get theirs. They said they would call my name when my sandwiches were ready. After the fourth guy left with his, I ended up just waiting inside. I heard the cashier ask about my sandwiches, and finally saw someone making them. Guess my order was forgotten when the line formed behind me and the one guy ahead of me. Hope this was a one off, as the go-to meals and homemade kombucha look promising. I felt bad making my friends wait so long, but we'll try this place again, in case it was a one-off experience.

Yelp
Updating my review as I'm hoping my bad experience was a one off. They have pretty good sandwiches and most of the employees are friendly people. Their customer service is good as their management reached out to me when I had a bad experience.
