"If you’re looking for tropical tranquillity, bypass Maui’s buzzy resort enclaves and head away from the coast to the island’s laid-back Upcountry, where you’ll find Lumeria. At the 24-room wellness retreat, visitors can start the day with a guided sunrise meditation, then strengthen their yoga practice, learn to hula or surf, and go snorkeling off the North Shore. Spa treatments include Hawaiian massage and acupuncture as well as nontraditional therapies like crystal healing and shaman-led journeys. The schedule is flexible, so you’ll have plenty of time to learn about Hawaii ’s paniolo (cowboy) culture or just take in the ocean views from your private lanai. Guest rooms feature art by local Maui artists, four-poster beds topped with organic linens, and stone-tile showers stocked with Aveda products, while the Wooden Crate restaurant prepares farm-to-table meals with nearly 200 types of fruits and vegetables that grow on the property."

"Chill out surrounded by lush, tropical gardens at this historic Maui compound and learn to live Aloha for a while. Here you can practice mindfulness, learn to meditate, take an aromatherapy class–or learn about the land through their horticulture programs. The beauty and serenity of the island attracts yogis of all disciplines and from all over the world to practice, so check the calendar for upcoming retreats and workshops. You'll leave feeling completely refreshed. "

5 Best Hotels in Maui

"Located in the rustic Upcountry region of Maui on the North Shore, Lumeria is a deeply tranquil wellness retreat that feels more like a remote farmhouse than a bustling resort. There are 24 Zen-like rooms here, most with courtyard views and a few with (very faraway) ocean views. Each is named after a Hawaiian tree, flower, or animal, and stocked with plush bedding, Hawaiian furniture, and breezy ceiling fans. While the pool and courtyard are open, group yoga classes, spa treatments, and food and beverage services have been paused for the time being. Guests are given access to virtual classes to do from their rooms (yoga mats and props are also provided) and there are mini-fridges in the rooms for storing small meals and drinks." - Juliana Shallcross

Lumeria Maui

"What was your first impression? Why did this hotel catch your attention?Located in the rustic Upcountry region of Maui on the North Shore, Lumeria is a deeply tranquil wellness retreat that feels more like a remote farmhouse than a bustling resort—if said farmhouse had an all-day restaurant, spa rooms adorned with healing crystals, and an outdoor yoga pavilion. What's the backstory? The property was originally built in the early 20th-century as a retirement home for Maui residents who had fought in World War I. It later became housing for plantation workers, and then a seminary, before it was converted into a 23-room wellness retreat under the vision of developer and designer Xorin Balbes. The property is now owned and operated by Eagle Point Hotel Partners. What should we know about the accommodations? There are 24 Zen-like rooms here, most with courtyard views and a few with (very faraway) ocean views. Each is named after a Hawaiian tree, flower or animal, and stocked with plush bedding, Hawaiian furniture, and breezy ceiling fans instead of A/C. Is there a charge for WiFi?Wi-Fi is included in the $29 retreat fee. Tell us about the restaurant.Lumeria’s Wooden Crate restaurant serves fresh farm-to-table meals using vegetables and fruits grown onsite. What's the service like?Staff is excellent. Top-notch wellness practitioners lead the classes, and off-resort tours and activities can be arranged, too. Imagine the other guests are part of a tribe. Name the tribe.Health conscious, Goop-reading yogis seeking to meditate their way to relaxation. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in?The North Shore is Maui's anti-resort, new-agey side; there aren’t many hotels over here—just a handful of low-key B&Bs. Lumeria gives you an intimate feel with all the perks of a full-scale hotel. Is there anything you'd change? We'd love it if the rooms were a bit bigger. Anything else we should know?Room rates include daily yoga and meditation classes, along with certain events and lectures that cover essential oils, tea ceremonies, and other wellness subjects. Why should we book a stay?Come for the ultimate wellness retreat that helps mind, body, and soul." - Juliana Shallcross

I am a local from Big Island and I cannot recommend this place enough. I would pass on their spa offerings however everything else is immaculate. Wonderful food, wonderful staff, amazing class offerings. It truly feels like Lumeria. My nervous system felt calm and ease from the moment I stepped on the grounds. They do a wonderful Kama'aina rate. Book now you won't regret it and I cannot wait to come back

Wife and I stayed here one night before our trip to Hana and loved it. The campus is nicely spaced with beautiful plants and a very serene feel. The room was beautiful and rustic. Hammocks and chairs are spaced around the campus for relaxing overlooking the ocean. The staff was very friendly and the location is great for getting a head start to Hana or exploring up country. We unfortunately were not there for any of their classes or meals.

Have stayed at Lumeria Maui at least 4 other times in the last 10 years for a yoga retreat. This time I took advantage of a self-directed stay. Overall very good experience -- this is a relaxation retreat resort. They have installed A/C in the rooms which really helps. I wish they would also offer a dinner option with the resort stay since their chef prepares delicious offerings for breakfast (which is included in the room price). There was a yoga group retreat taking place during the whole week I was there so it's not like there is not a chef on the premises during the dinner service. During the week that I stayed there was less offerings of yoga classes in the morning. I looked on the previous 3 weeks of offerings and there were 9:00AM yoga classes scheduled.

We've had the most beautiful stay. We enjoyed the tranquil grounds and the room meet our needs perfectly. The breakfast was very good, offering good protein to fuel our day. We look forward to returning!

Sadly we have been disappointed with this property. The room smells really bad of mold. For a “healing” and wellness retreat they offer nothing in terms of amenities. You can’t even get a cup of hot water for tea before bed. The concept seems lazy and unattended. There is no feeling of Hawaii and being a wellness center . It’s seems lazy and ignored. We intentionally booked this place wanting a break from the world but would love to ability to make a cup of coffee or tea and have the room not wreak of mold. …..

*TRIGGER WARNING* PROFILING POST / DISCRIMINATION My **local** friend came to visit me from Oahu and booked us a staycation at Lumeria (I live Haiku, have sent loved ones here to stay because it’s close). On his second day there, he mentioned that a man (later found out it was manager) came and asked him if he was a guest there/ was checking him out in a discriminatory way. He brushed it off, said he’s used to it (body blasted in tattoos- not that that should be an excuse). I’m thinking hm thats not right but also brushed it off and tried to enjoy our weekend. A few hours later a woman comes at us, laying by the pool, phone pointed at us as if she’s filming and very angrily says “are you guests here, whats your room number?” we replied yes and then I asked if there’s a problem, before i could even finish asking that she demanded “whats your room number?” So we started looking for the key but pointed at the room in the meantime. Then finally she said “WHATS YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME” so rude and so heated. And my friend told her his name (because were paying guests) And then I said by the way.. who are you? And she responds “I’m the supervisor I have to make sure you’re not breaking into the pool” And i said so thats how you approach us? Paying guests? With absolute disrespect? She never said aloha, she came at us already expecting that we had broken in and were abusing their pool. She didn’t want to hear a word we had to say DESPITE us dropping $1000 on room/ massages. This is how you treat the people giving you business? A little more time passes, I’m livid. Now the manager (original profiler) comes down w paperwork in his hand. He said I needed to sign some waivers to be by the pool. I told him the situation. He was apologetic. We didn’t wind up staying there last night (our second night). Because of how uncomfortable this “healing wellness center” made us feel. To be attacked when you’re trying to find recluse is absolutely unacceptable. Today we went to get massages, had to check in at reception. The profiler lady was sitting at the front desk and could barely make eye contact with us let alone apologize. Which I i felt we deserve. The Bigger Picture How are you going to run a business on stolen land and then treat the people you stole it from as if they don’t belong? I’m writing this on behalf of my friend, and I want it to be very clear: I will never send another visitor here. I will never give this place another dime. Lumeria, do better

I was gifted a massage from my children. Could not have been a more perfect gift. Jessie was my therapist and was phenomenal. Asked about any concerns or request and proceeded to exceed my expectations. Highly recommend. Thank you, Jessie.

The rooms are showing wear. The room was spacious. It was musty. Room service is only available with advance request. Classes get canceled with little notice. No staff are around after 8pm.
