How to Make Shaved Ice at Home: Tips on Using a Shaver, Topping Suggestions, and More | Eater

"A dessert cafe with two Washington locations that creates shaved ice from a proprietary frozen flavored-milk base poured into the machine so it freezes on the barrel, producing a sturdier, longer-lasting product that holds toppings. Manager Nessa Choi advises against using ordinary cubed ice because it melts too quickly and recommends freezing water or a sweetened milk mixture in quart containers; bases can be flavored with condensed milk, honey, tea, cocoa, fruit, or extracts. For toppings she favors fresh fruit (or jams if fresh isn’t available) and suggests creative builds like a caramel version with caramel sauce, crushed Lotus Biscoff cookies, and bananas." - Kat Thompson

Wonderful spot for dessert! Lumi has been my go-to dessert spot lately. Totally obsessed with their bingsu and golden toast. So far, my faves are the mango cheesecake bingsu and caramel apple pie golden toast. They have big servings and beautiful presentation of each dessert. Totally instagrammable! Besides from desserts, they also serve different drink options, such milk teas and lattes. Plenty of tables and seating for groups or dates and they have seating spots inside and outside the cafe. Parking is available inside the garage or across the street.

We were looking for a new dessert place and came across this place on Instagram, so we decided to check it out. It was really good. We ordered the apple pie golden toast, creamy taro bingsu, and the choco brownie bingsu. The golden toast was buttery which paired wonderfully with the sweetness of the caramel and apples making it delicious. I could eat this every morning for breakfast. The brownies on the bingsu were soft, not hard like some places. I just wish the taro flavor on the taro bingsu was a little more front and center, though it was still good. For an Asian inspired place I was expecting the desserts to be under sugared, but the sugar level was nice. Almost a bit too sweet by the time we'd finished, although we did try 3 different desserts. What I didn't like is that the parking is hard to find. We did eventually end up in the parking garage, which was free, so it worked out. Also, when you check out there's the typical screen for tip, but I'm not sure what they're doing to earn a tip. You have to pick up your own food and bus your own table. I know tip is optional, however most people leave a tip when the screen asks for it. If you're going to ask for tips, then there needs to be offered additional service. There's none. Seating is limited, fortunately we didn't go at a busy time or I can imagine it would be hard to find a place to sit and eat. We were there at 4:00 on a Saturday. Lastly, it's really expensive. For 3 desserts with a tip we spent about $50. I think if I go back I will go for breakfast and skip the bingsu.

Very good but expensive. The bingsu comes with the sweet condensed milk on the side, so you can decide how sweet you want your ice cream. The golden toast was delicious, good sweetness even for us of non-asian Palates.

Google
Cute place. Bubble waffle was good, crispy and light. We were a bit disappointed with the bingsus. We ordered the mango cheesecake bingsu and the taro bingsu. The single size bingsu is stacked super high and huge. We weren't able to finish them. The mini was actually a better size for one person. The mango in the mango cheesecake was not asian or Mexican mango. The sauce was thick and overly sweet. The shaved milk itself was icy and flavorless and you need to add the condensed milk that comes with it to get some flavor, but then it made it even sweeter.

Google
Lumi is a fun dessert place, I’ve visited about 3 times and ordered different desserts. I would not recommend the bingsu as it does not have much flavor, they are stacked quite high but it consists of mainly unflavored ice, although it is very pretty for pictures. The s’more’s toast was good although the bread was quite stale. The restaurant is typically very busy and it’s hard to find seating. The customer service is okay, although they ask you for a tip which is odd because you pick up the order and return the dishes yourself. The tables tend to always be a bit dirty and sticky but everything else appears to be clean.

Google
Awesome dessert place! The portions are generous and meant to be shared. Good selection of coffee, teas, etc too for drinks. Highly recommended.

Google
The Mango Bingsu was refreshing and the small cheesecake was a nice touch. The Taro Bingsu had red bean paste in it. The mini size was just right. It may take a while to make when it is crowded. Free parking in the garage is limited and very small.

Yelp
After dinner, we stumbled upon this little dessert gem--and we're so glad we did! The parking was a bit of a scavenger hunt (only two reserved spots), but there seemed to be some street parking nearby if you're up for the hunt. The place itself is simple but super welcoming, and the smell alone could pull you in from a block away. Right when you walk in, there's a display of the menu that made it really easy to order--and even harder to decide because everything looked so good. We ended up with a bingsu and a bubble waffle (the latter for my 8-year-old, who inhaled it so fast I barely got a taste). The bingsu was refreshing, delicious, and looked like a work of art--almost too pretty to eat... almost. Definitely planning to come back to try more flavors. We may have just found our new favorite spot!

Yelp
We came here for some dessert after dinner, and I love trying new bingsu places! When we arrived it wasn't too busy and were lucky enough to get a table, but around an hour after it was packed. We got the matcha bingsu to share amongst the 4 of us, which was the perfect amount since we were stuffed from dinner. I appreciate how the ice itself was matcha flavored, as opposed to other places that just add the powder. The red bean was also delicious as usual, and the mochi chunks were also great. Overall, a solid dessert spot!

Yelp
Cute spot. Pretty small location with a few tables. There is a parking garage which is nice! Ordered the strawberry cheese bingsoo. It was good and even the small size was nice to share! I would come back again to try the other flavors.

Yelp
Wouldn't have thought there to be a cute dessert cafe where it's located in bel-red but was pleasantly surprised! Came here to try their boba a few different times and really enjoy their drinks. The only thing is that one time I went here maybe 30 minutes after they opened around 12:30 and they didn't have their boba prepared so I had to have my milk tea without the pearls which was disappointing so recommend you getting there an hour after it opens just in case. I also had their chocolate bingsoo dessert (the larger size) and shared it, and it's a pretty good portion. The ice itself was so creamy and would highly recommend trying if you're looking for something cool/refreshing and sweet. There's parking in the garage with a few spots reserved from Lumi customers - it's around the side street to the cafe and you have the drive in a bit and loop around inside to get to the indoor parking. There's also outdoor parking available. Cafe is located in an apartment plaza complex. Some good seating available inside and really nice vibe, where you can either hang out with friends or even study/read. I've got before 2pm and it's never been busy before. Overall would recommend this place for boba/bingsoo/a place to study if you wanted!

Yelp
Have been here twice, and told myself I would try the dessert the second time I came, but ended up just getting drinks again. We came on a late Friday night, and it was pretty busy and packed. I got the Honey Yuzu Herbal Tea with rainbow jelly and my bf got the Lychee Jasmine Green Tea. The drinks were good. Our friends got some milk teas, and they really liked it. The only complaint was the drink sizes were small. Next time, we will need to try a dessert.

Yelp

Yelp
I'm always down to try new dessert places and so I think it was about time I discovered another one. There's a small garage and so parking isn't a problem. But the doors are very confusing. Maybe it's because we went at 8:30pm but they were locked. But I feel like there's usually a separate entrance for those in the garage, like a backdoor or something. So we ended up having to walk through the rain and around the building to get to our car. The desserts themselves were yummy. We got the mango cheesecake single. I really liked the sorbet at the top, we were kind of laying jenga with it to see who was the first to make it topple. The mango wasn't actually that sweet. Probably because it wasn't season. The only thing would be it's kind of pricey. They also have the air conditioning really high so make sure you wear ample when you go.

Yelp
My friends and I wanted to grab a sweet treat after dinner and we decided on Lumi Dessert Cafe since they had a variety of items on the menu. There was milk teas, fruit teas, coffee, bingsu, honey toast, and bubble waffles. My boyfriend and I decided on the Strawberry Banana Bubble Waffle to share between the two of us since I was too full to want to eat my own sweet treat. It was good, but it is debatable if it is $16 good. The original bubble waffle they sell is $6.99. It was SO cold inside the cafe. It was kind of unbearable, so as soon as everyone finished their drinks and desserts we left.

Yelp
*This review is purely an experience review. We did not eat anything here. We walked in maybe 20-30 mins before closing and they were completely out of most of the things which was disappointing. We were willing to try something else out of their menu but they mentioned we couldn't be seated. The entire reason we came out was so we could socialize outside of homes. It would've been ok if they mentioned their closing time and asked us to be out by then. There were people still seated so it wasn't great to hear that we couldn't be seated. We left and I haven't been back and not sure if I will be.

Yelp
The service was quick and the area is nicely lit. The space has a lot of windows. Getting to and from the cafe from the parking is really easy. There's a free parking garage. You'll have to leave from the back of the cafe to get back to the parking garage. The yuzu tea was nice and warm and perfectly sweetened. Will definitely come back

Yelp
Food quality: Fresh & flavorful Service: quick, friendly, and helpful Atmosphere: cute & calm Notes: park in visit lot for free parking and quick access to Lumi.

Yelp
After seeing that our usual spot for bingsu had a lowered health rating following a recent inspection, we decided to look for other nearby options. We were pleasantly surprised to see that Lumi had opened in Redmond, serving bingsu and other desserts. We swung by with our family on a Friday afternoon and tried a couple of bingsu flavors: berrylicious and banana crumble. Both flavors were amazing, with a ton of flavor and generous toppings. We enjoyed our visit so much that we stopped by the next day to try some additional flavors. We're hoping to try some of the golden toast on a future visit, but it's going to be hard to tear us away from the bingsu offerings. Besides the awesome food, the staff are very helpful and friendly, and the food comes out as a reasonable pace, even when busy. Parking can be a bit of a pain right now, with several surface street spots blocked off. But the weekend was a bit easier parking than during the week, since several garage parking spots are available for Lumi customers after the eyeglass store next door is closed.

Yelp
The service was fast and the bingsu is yummy and really refreshing. If you love shave ice, but don't want a whole lot of syrup, you would definitely love these Korean shave ice dessert

Yelp
Bingsu - that's the newest dessert/ice cream in my list! I had the Mango Cheesecake which was topped with fresh mangoes, creamy cheesecake and a mango sorbet! This was perfectly sweet and as I love it! they did give condensed milk on the side that I was supposed to add but didn't do it! There is limited parking inside the building! friendly staff and a beautiful cafe inside!

Yelp
I give this cute dessert shop 5 stars! The bubble waffles are delicious, perfect crunchiness but still soft and gummy on the inside. Kiddo is allergic to berries and they were able to replace it with bananas. Since they came with sprinkle nuts and it didn't say in the menu, we were able to eat it. They quickly remake it with no fuss. I definitely will return. Love love love this cute little gem. The dining room looks bright and had a water station. The only downsides I say is their parking. The parking garage fits only compact cars. I ended up found street parking.
google avatar

Yelp
It feels like Christmas! Walking into the store, you can hear Christmas music playing, and with the cold weather, the environment feels warm and cozy. We were greeted with a dessert display showcasing the types of desserts they offer, which was nice because we could see what each dessert looked like. They have a wide range of drinks and desserts, so it was nice to have multiple options. The bingsoo comes in three different sizes, and the portions are great for sharing. Overall, the environment and desserts are excellent. Plus, they stay open late, making it a perfect spot to hang out with friends or enjoy a late-night dessert. Rating: *3/5 mango bingsoo: I had better bingsoo and I felt like it was interesting how the mango ice cream had a hit of lavender. * 4/5 lychee green tea: not bad but it's pretty sweet

Yelp
Our last stop during our food trip with the girls. Perfect ending with this dessert place! Even though we were already full, we couldn't stop but eat this deliciousness! Of course I had to try their Mango Toast and it was soooo good!!! Service was pretty fast considering they were busy. Place was small and cute!

Yelp
Desserts here are very aesthetically appealing, so I decided to hit up this place with a friend. There seems to be a nearby visitor parking garage to get here, though I settled for tough-to-find street parking since it was a Friday evening. The place has both outside and inside seating, and the inside is clean and kinda modern-like. Servers are very friendly here and give you very recommendations if you ask them. Before you order, you can see a preview of the golden toast and bingsu desserts and how big they are behind a glass full of mannequins of the desserts. They also serve milk tea, fruit tea, bubble waffles and coffee here. I got the golden toast with mango and berries, and my friend got their dark oolong milk tea. The toast was pretty HUGE, and also accurate with the display at the front. There are mango pieces, a scoop of mango ice cream on the top, a mix of blueberries and raspberries sprinkled all over and some whipped cream on the side. Needless to say, this was really tasty and the mangoes were very fresh too! My friend's dark oolong milk tea was all right, and it didn't look like there were choices on the size. Great, chill place to hang and talk, and have some huge and Instagram-worthy dessert!

Yelp
Newish Korean dessert shop serving bingsu and dessert toasts. I came in to get one of their big "golden toast" dessert cubes, but saw a new item on the menu. A Korean style dessert toast. I thought what the heck. I'll give it a try. It's two pieces of milk bread with a big layer of mochi in the middle drizzle honey. On top is a scoop of ice cream and malted dessert powder. It was okay. I probably should have stuck to the Golden toast cube.

Yelp
Delicious desserts. But my wife and I were nervous about the bathroom. It was a total mess! And no paper towels in there, so everyone, including employees, has to touch the door handle on the way out. Yuck! Luckily all the employees were wearing gloves.
google avatar

Yelp
Dessert cafe with a big menu for different flavors and textures. Bubble waffles, binsu, milk tea drinks and sweet toast. Pick from multiple fresh fruits and sherbet ice cream. Although they have a parking garage stalls are limited. Manager said you could park in front for short time, but keep an eye on your car. The street parking is deceiving. It appears that there are stalls with no red curb markings, however there are no parking signs on each end of the curb. Outdoor seating is available. I will come again to try new flavors. The cashier is friendly, place clean. May need a bigger set up to clean up dishes. This dessert place opens late. Visited again for birthdate dessert. Out side tables available. We shared multiple Binsu desserts. Asked for extra spoons and bowls. Each were delivered to us to our outside table. They do need to get a better bigger clean up area. It is too small and need to have a clean area outside too. Having 2 separated areas - 1 counter/table with clean utensils and the 2nd counter to dispose the dirty dishes.
google avatar

Palak G.

Yelp
I tried the banana crumble bingsu, which was delicious! It was well-made, had just the proper amount of sweetness, and was the ideal dessert. Please be aware that because they are so popular, they run out of alternatives quickly. If you're lucky, you might get what you want; if not, I would advise ordering what's available; you won't be disappointed. which is how, we ordered the banana one and enjoyed it.
google avatar

Lea S.

Yelp
Was somewhat frustrated by our trip to this location. We went in the early afternoon and they had already run out of 3 or so of the bingsoo flavors. After our order had already been started, we were told that another major ingredient for the injeolmi (rice cakes) was missing - though they did substitute in ice cream, it just wasn't quite the same. We also were only given literally 2 almond slices for garnish, although the display made it look like it was meant to be a main feature. Bingsoo in itself was good, great texture and taste. Sparkling peach tea was SUPER sweet even after some of the ice had melted. We had to take it home to water down further. I've had better luck at other locations, perhaps this was just an off day.
google avatar

Fumie W.

Yelp
solid spot for bingsu! tried their small strawberry cheesecake bingsu. it's a great size to share with 2-3 people. lots of flavors to choose from. btw there's garage parking for lumi guests
google avatar

Nora J.

Yelp
Loved the bingsu here! I got the taro and loved that there was the flavoring in the milk. I liked that condensed milk came on the side to pour on top of it. This bingsu reminded me of halo halo! A regular size is a good size to share between two people. I like that there's free parking for customers since this location is on the bottom floor of an apartment complex. It's a bit pricey though. It was ~$17 for one but I think it was worth it since it's been one of the better bingsu's I've had in Seattle!
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
The berry bingsu was good and refreshing, but looks nothing like the photos/example. There was a lack of berries on it, but it was still good. Also came with a side of condensed milk, but it was already sweet enough as is. I didn't love the nutella bubble waffle and didn't try the banana box toast my friend ordered. Get here when it's not busy or else you will be standing around eating your dessert. There is a lack of tables...esp when there's more than 3-4 parties. They do have a few tables outside, but the weather doesn't cooperate during the fall/winter months in the PNW.
google avatar

Kirstin H.

Yelp
I really enjoyed visiting LUMI for a sweet treat to kick off the warm weekend. The interior was small but beautifully designed, seating was comfortably maximized for the space, and there was a self-serve water and bussing station. I got the mango dessert toast and the manager told me that they prepare it with their house made French salted butter before baking, and use bread made by a local bakery (Kiki's).
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Really like the options they had for dessert. Though they have three main items: shaved ice, toast, and bubble waffle, they have a lot of different creation/flavors to pick from. We tried their mango shaved ice, and their banana crumble bubble waffle. My kids devoured it so fast, I'm lucky I even got to try some! Bubble waffle was a great texture, but I also believe this is because we ate it right away. Good, creaminess for the shaved ice, and good flavors too. The condensed milk is served on the side, so you can have better control of the sweetness level. Service was good, quick and friendly. Price is on the steeper side. I do wish they had some savory options. Like fries/y fries. Just something to cut the sweetness. I would come back to try their bubble tea. Nom nom. Good option here. There's also retail parking in their building.

Yelp
4/27/24- store was not prepared. They opened at 3p. We were 2nd customers of the day. - No more strawberries - No more boba - Opened April 1, 2024. - Original location in Lynnwood. Food- *Taro Bingsu- *Boba Bingsu- no more boba, they substituted rainbow jelly. -Middle of both Bingsu with red bean. - Both good flavors. *Lychee Jasmine Tea with boba- substitute with side of rainbow jelly. Service- only 2 people, wifi system down with growing crowd. - did not feel there was enough prep done before store opened. - Guy said it was unusual for the crowds (today was also opening of the light rail). Ambiance- cute and clean. Variety of table and bar seating. Location- in an apartment complex, with garage. Free parking. Back door to store was not opened from garage. Had to walk around. * they normally do open the back door. Value- pricey. The volume of food placed on bingsu was not abundant, and definitely not representative of the fake food in display case. Recommend- it has potential and opportunities for improvement. -Overall experience today was disappointing, but empathize and optimistic they will improve. Suspect off day.

Bethany S.

Yelp
Took way too long with my order, waited over 25 minutes and had people after me already getting their food. I had to remind them that I even ordered. This was so unprofessional and honestly really disappointing. Service was very off putting, wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Rae S.

Yelp
Great place to sit and finish up my work in the evening. Not too loud, a delicious sweet dessert, a yummy drink, and enough space at the table for me to spread out. Loved finding this place.

Yelp
The bingsuu dessert was soo tasty!!! The flavors we got were berrylicious, matcha, and chocolate brownie. I liked eating the berrylicious strawberry binsgu in conjunction with the chocolate brownie. Such a good combo. I forgot to get a drink to take home so will definitely be back to try some of their drinks and more delicious desserts. The dessert toast looked intriguing!!

Chuck N.

Yelp
Hugely disappointed by their lack of organization. The store signed said they would open at 1P on weekends, but one was there! On top of it, the door was ajar which triggered the alarm. There were two families waiting, so you lost six customers. We went to Snowy Village instead, and will never comeback.
google avatar

Esther H.

Yelp
Finally! Shaved ice (bingsoo) that not only looks beautiful but delicious! There is a parking garage and plenty of seating inside and outside. Sometimes there is a long line but it is worth waiting for.

Charlie K.

Yelp
I had a Creamy Taro Bingsu, while my friends enjoyed the Injeolmi Bingsu and Strawberry Nutella Bubble Waffle. Everything was absolutely delicious. Their bingsu stands out from the usual ones I've tried elsewhere--it's more like ice cream, with an incredibly rich flavor. The cafe itself has a clean and modern atmosphere, which I really appreciated.
google avatar

Tarun C.

Yelp
It's in pricey side but very different. Tried the mango one and totally loved it. The magic is in their milk snow, never tried anything like this before.
google avatar

Lizzy L.

Yelp
Adorable and aesthetic cafe with delicious desserts and drinks! Service was great and relatively quick. I ordered the mango cheesecake shaved ice and it was perfection! The textures were amazing and it was not too sweet and the cheesecake was delicious!

Vess N.

Yelp
It was a nice experience for me. Got the matcha red bean shaved ice. It was good but I think there was too much red bean.
google avatar

Mahak M.

Yelp
Fabulous toast boxes! The bread goes into the oven as you order so it's amazingly crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. Tons of fun flavors to try, and the perfect thing to cool you off in the summer!
google avatar

Angela N.

Yelp
It was just ok for taste we ordered taro bingsu and strawberry banana bubble waffle. Service was super slow even though there was 1 person ahead of us. 2 workers there were just mostly chatting, maybe that's why the service is so slow. The interior is simple. I don't think we'll be back here again.
google avatar

Justin P.

Yelp
Service was fine; however, this place is extremely overpriced. Nearly $17 after tax for a "medium" bingsu, which is no bigger than a rice bowl. The injeolmi was also stale/hard. Better off going to snowy village imo.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Food was a fun experience. I want to return for morning waffle and coffee. We tried the bingsu dishes and found them a real pleasure. Service was friendly and helpful if you are new to this venue. Parking could be a hassle. So best to plan that before arriving.
google avatar

Delara M.

Yelp
We LOVED this place, not only does it close at 11, it's one of the only things open past 9pm so we appreciate that alone, it's got a cute inside ambiance, and lots of staff do not slow at all, we got our 2 bingsu and a boba within 7 minutes after ordering. The desserts were BOMB and I appreciated them having sizes, mini, normal, and big. Not to mention the display case, you can see exactly what they all look like and how pretty and presentable everything is!!
google avatar

FaZe W.

Yelp
Very expensive and was given the wrong entrees, 45$ for 2 small shaved ice and a waffle is crazy. The bingsu had literally no flavor the waffle was decent but the waiter taking my order was slow and just stared at me and served me the wrong meal waited 20 min, no wonder this place has trash reviews, at least it looked good too bad it didn't taste the part.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
Was pricey and small portions compared to other local spots. Taro flavored tasted atrificial.

Griselda R.

Yelp
The berry and mango flavors were amazing! Super smooth, flavorful and just the right amount of sweetness. The service was excellent. Indoor and outdoor seating available. We plan to go back soon.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Delicious! Really enjoyed the chocolate with the milk-based shaved ice. The mango cheesecake shaved ice was also very good. The ice is made from milk, not water, which provides a very rich flavor to the desserts. The texture of the ice was crisp and fluffy. If you haven't tried this style of dessert I highly recommend it, we'll be bringing more people next time.

Kin L.

Yelp
Friendly staff and the service was quick. Place was reasonably busy and the desserts were tasty. They were out of matcha, twice now, so that was disappointing.
