The Best Places to Eat in Central Illinois | Eater Chicago

"The food at Luminary Kitchen & Provisions in Springfield is several different kinds of “ecstatic,” whether it’s a profound and glossy lamb ragu with housemade pasta, or creamy grits and sucotash-y stew coating pork shoulder rendered just so as though by the hand of a divine power. This would all be hyperbole if it weren’t just so simply how things are — even a humble charcuterie board elicits the kind of genuine gasps not heard since that little boy first told audiences he saw dead people. And when you think about it, isn’t that the perfect antidote for 2024? Reactions that aren’t reel but…real? Luminary Kitchen & Provisions is the reason why terms like “a chef’s chef” have come into existence, entering the vernacular with intentional redundancy and born out of necessity to differentiate today’s fame-seeking chefs of social media and TV cooking competitions from chefs who focus their confidence and skills instead on cooking food that makes their guests happy. Chefs Aurora and Jordan Coffey clearly wear that label with pride while on a mission to keep their guests and their community both well-fed and happy." - Timothy DePeugh

I dined solo on a Saturday night. I made a reservation at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and attentive, which I appreciated. The Caesar salad had pistachios, which was an interesting twist. It was not a traditional Caesar. They were able to accommodate my gluten-free diet, which was great. The lamb loin main dish was interesting. The Colorado lamb was not at all gamey, which surprised me. It did seem a bit tougher to chew than I expected. The dessert was tasty. I was seeking a special experience and this place delivered. It seems to be one of the more creative restaurants in the area. I would definitely recommend it. Make sure to make a reservation!

Coming back to say best birthday brunch ever. Phenomenal service. So much food. Consistently delicious. Everything was top notch. This is the first time I’d been for happy hour. Let me say. From the second you walk in, it’s candle lit and dimmed lighting, so perfect for a date or small gathering. It Immediately set the vibe. Our server, Kyle was attentive, drinks were phenomenal we both had the passion fruit marg. We split dank fries and the Oklahoma burger. Subbed a salad for the fries and it was to die for. Can’t wait to go back. 10/10 from the second we walked in. Didn’t get any pics because I was enjoying my time spent but well worth it. Was $60 for food and four drinks.

5/5! Luminary exceeded expectations! The seared duck breast was perfection - tender, flavorful & beautifully presented. The coffee old fashion was phenomenal. Our tonight’s server was Audrey, and her exceptional service made our night unforgettable. Modern ambiance & attentive staff. Can't wait to return! -Highly recommend: The Seared Duck.

Loved everything about my experience. This was my second visit and it was just as good as the first. Two of the dishes we had (salmon tartar and short rib) were a bit too salty for my taste. I couldn't finish the salmon tartar because of the overpowering saltiness of the sauce, but the salmon itself was soft and tender. Otherwise, everything else was perfection. I love the atmosphere, the staff was kind and food was staggered ro come out just after we finished one dish. Decently priced, well executed dishes.

If you’re a foodie looking for an ever-changing flavorful menu with locally sourced ingredients, then welcome to Luminary! Every week the menu is updated based on what’s available in the area and what creative + ingenious dishes the chefs come up with. Consistently open for lunch, be sure to call / check their Facebook page for brunch & dinner availability. Reservations are a must for brunch. Ask for a seat at the bar if tables are full— the kind bartenders will take care of you. Been for both brunch, lunch, and dinner and I look forward to my next time in!

As promised, I would return to Luminary and amend my rating if they gave the flavor and ingenuity that I had grown to love. Boy, did they deliver last night! We had the Parisian salad, the charred carrot and ruby trout. I highly recommend the Parisian salad 4/5, but the charred carrot and ruby trout were both a 5/5. I would not change a thing about the latter two dishes. The cocktails were great. I had the cocktail with the St. Germain that was recently added to the menu which was light and refreshing. We will be back. Overall 5/5! Prior rating: We are both American Harvest fans so we were REALLY looking forward to this. I have to be honest, nothing really stood out at all. The go go potatoes were decent and my favorite out of all the dishes we tried. My chicken Caesar not so salad was a 3/5. I don’t think anything really stood out about it at all. It didn’t have any unique flavor combinations that set it apart from similar sandwiches. They LKP burger was also okay, 3/5. We tend to prefer juicy burgers that are medium. My totally impressed salad had all the component it needed flavor wise but the dressing didn’t take this salad home for me. It was the “almost” dish for me. I also wish that my chicken breast had more salt for seasoning and was more tender in general also a 3/5. Overall, we agreed that this was the appropriate rating. I suggest people gravitate to other dishes on the menu.

Google
How did I not discover this restaurant sooner?! They offer incredibly advanced flavor profiles compared to typical restaurants you find in this area. After moving to the area from NY, I’ve been searching for real, healthy food and a brunch spot open on Sunday (a rarity) and this restaurant is my new favorite. The service was great for Sunday brunch - servers were super attentive on coffee refills and water and friendly! They offer many non-alcoholic cocktail options that I greatly appreciate. The portions of food are large and delicious. I tried the Beet Salad (best ever with blueberry thyme preserves, lemon poppyseed ricotta, and pistachios) and lamb ragu (perfect heat and fresh pasta) with the Rizzler (refreshing peach and N/A whiskey) and chocolate budino (similar to a lava cake). I recommend reservations because it gets packed and there’s a line before they open!

Sat at the bar...was fantastic as we got to look into the kitchen and see the magic happening! Food and service was phenomenal! We were only passing through but will make sure this is a stop in the future!

Yelp
Modern, inventive kitchen that puts out interesting and delicious combinations of flavors. The dining room is open and can be loud but the vibe is positive and very energetic. Servers and bartenders are experienced and very friendly and accommodating. Good selection of delicious specialty drinks, excellent craft beer choices and robust wine selection. There are also several CBD/THC drinks and non-alcoholic choices. Highly recommend this spot, if you love good food.

Yelp
Went there for a family birthday brunch and felt like they did an excellent job on everything. It was festively designed on the inside while still being elegant. The staff were incredible with being on top of everything, bringing out fresh food, taking away plates and just very accommodating overall. The breakfast brunch buffet seems to have turned out to be a great hit with the bacon being incredibly crisp yet melt in your mouth, well seasoned fried homestyle potatoes, and thick French Toast perfect with the syrup provided. Would highly recommend to anyone!

Yelp
We had gone for brunch, by accident, but WOW! I was so delicious and it was a true brunch not just all breakfast food. So he went to dinner last week best french dip my husband ever had. My burger was amazing, BUT we tried a the Jerk Sweet Potatoes and OMG. Tring to recreate it at home lol

Yelp
Great lunches!! 5 stars for lunch! Creative, fresh, high quality and worth the price. Lunch is $15-20. Dinner is $20+ for similar items with a just a few extra items. Dinners aren't bad, but not worth the price. Other places serve better dinners for the same price.

Yelp
Luminary is an artisan vibe restaurant. I've eaten there twice- dinner back in early spring and Sunday Brunch this winter. I didn't review after our spring visit because I was so torn- great appetizers-much less successful entrees. I feel after two visits- I have a better sense of the food they're creating at Luminary. The menu changes from visit to visit. The menu online on the day we visited was different than the menu in the restaurant. The table started with 2 orders of beignet. Each order was 4 beignets- coated in cinnamon and sugar. I would not recommend these- as all were raw/doughy inside. It was unfortunate they were not fully cooked- I don't send food back, so it was what it was. Two diners ordered the 3 course brunch menu. At $30 prix fixe my review is mixed. The first entree's- ricotta pancakes and maple braised bacon were both hits. They were both small portions. The second courses were eggs Benedict and Chilaquiles. These were entree size and both were tasty. The pork on the Benedict was spicy. The third (dessert) course was only a single offering- sticky toffee cake. When I say the portion was a bite- it really was only a bite. If not for the toffee sauce- the cake had very little flavor. The cake itself had a "wheat" taste- not yummy. Our other diners ordered a la carte and included the big boy (burger), Brussels sprouts, and warm burrata. All of the a la carte offerings were tasty and I would recommend. The warm burrata comes with a large sliced baguette. The big boy includes fries. We didn't order cocktails with Sunday brunch- but for dinner in the spring all our cocktails were hand crafted and delicious. Luminary is definitely worth a visit. Great vibe for a date or meeting friends. Food-wise, some great hits and a few misses.

Yelp
Was looking for a Sunday brunch and had never been here. The food is amazing. The presentation is outstanding and the service is very good as well. The place is tiny so it is packed and doesn't have a lot of parking but it's well worth the wait. It's a bit on the expensive side but at the same time it has a very different menu than you can get anywhere else in town.

Yelp
The food was so delicious! The 4 course menu was creative, but so delicious. The service was quick and accurate. Our server was personable and patient. Yes, it was crowded, but it was New Year's Eve.

Yelp
We had dinner on NYE. Place was packed (they need a bigger space!) but service and food came quickly. We both enjoyed everything we got. The tuna crispy rice bite was so good, wish there was more of it. Another highlight was poached pear/honey butter/bacon dish, could have been a savory dessert. The garlic beignets/braised beef/honey was a fancy take on stew and was fantastic. The pressed chicken/chili verde had the perfect amount of spice and a big portion of juicy chicken. I really enjoyed the line cooks old fashioned. The main scallop crudo was good though I wish the scallops were served ice cold. Overall, a very great dinner.

Yelp
First time here. Brunch was interesting and tasty. Service was good. Custom Cup coffee was great. Brunch selection had a variety. You can order a la carte off the three course brunch. Or share the brunch. I enjoyed my food. Glad we finally came!

Yelp
"The worst Bloody Mary in Springfield, ILLINOIS!" I have heard amazing things about this local Springfield eatery and wanted to try Luminary for ages, so when a friend invited me to brunch I couldn't resist and drove over a hour to try this spot. The restaurant: The restaurant is trendy and there is a bustling energy within the four walls. Servers are moving here and there and we had to wait 35min, but we felt it was fair considering the appeal and culinary experience. The menu: The menus is structured differently each week. It's cool and edgy. They have some really neat offerings and I wish we could have tried more. There is creativity everywhere you look. Nothing is ordinary or consistent and that's where things start to unravel. The staff: The staff we interacted with seemed busy but congenial. They were focused on production and quality to meet the demands of the large amount of business. Have you ever had one of those waitresses or waiters who just delights you? A service worker who goes out of her way to make sure your experience is the best? This wasn't any of that. This was transactional and without a personal touch. The drinks: This was such a disappointment. We both ordered drinks and I got a Bloody Mary. Sadly this was the worst bloody I've ever had. It was watery, had very little alcohol, its flavor was that of unripe tomatoes. There was no rim, no salt, very little spice... it was unoriginal as stated by the table next to us. I'd say it was the worst Bloody Mary in Springfield. The food: We both orders from the à la carte menu because we were told we couldn't have certain items unless we ordered the multi course brunch. My friend had a sandwich that was stellar. Her food came 14 min before mine. Mine was cool but decent, nothing spectacular, but wasn't in sync with my companion. I asked for the toppings on my breakfast to be on the side w/ extra butter, they weren't... it was combined. Hint hint - the GF pancakes are not worth it and the mix seems like something Aldi does better anyways. Final thoughts: My friend said it best, "how can so much fun and energy result in such poor product and service?" Good question. This seems like a business that has lost the ability to produce a good product served by good people. They have focused more on "form" and not enough on "function". The good: Trendy & Exciting Cool menu Very busy The bad: Not once did someone ask how our meal was. Not once did anyone check in on us for our drinks. Our meals were not served at the same time. When I asked about our drinks, the bar tender just told us what she did, but didn't ask if we had an issue. We were not welcomed to the restaurant No one introduced themselves. It was expensive In closing - this is a cool place staffed by creative and likely innovative chefs. They take pride in there product and I can tell they want people to have a good experience based on the art and decor. I suggest they spend more time training their staff, because service is everything. Maybe take a lesson from Cracker Barrel, at least there the waitress introduces herself and thanks the customer for coming. That would have gone a long way. I do not recommend eating here. Save your money and go somewhere local that knows the value in serving people well.

Yelp
Had an impressive dinner at this restaurant. 4.5 would be most accurate. I ordered a salmon ceviche, a side bread, a ricotta gnocchi and a braised short rib entree. I ordered the ceviche purely out of curiosity -- I wondered how orange and aji amarillo could go with salmon, but surprisingly they combined well with each other, especially the orange added fragrance to the salmon. The gnocchi was even better. It was a comforting, warm dish; each gnocchi dumpling was lightly crispy outside and chewy inside, the asparagus and peas were fresh, and the ricotta sauce added some creamery to the whole dish. Finally I had the braised short rib, which was accompanied by poached egg, white polenta, crushed red pepper tomato sauce and broccolini. The fall-of-the-bone meat was mouth-melting. The pepper tomato sauce then added some sweetness to it. Another creative (and great) thing was the poached egg. Indeed the runny egg yolk went well with the short rib, while the egg white was super tender and subtle! Downside was the bread, which was over toasted and cost me $3.5. Besides, their menu differs much from the one posted on the website. Service was quick and good. My waitress asked my experience about each of the dishes and informed me about the preparation of them. For vibe, the whole restaurant was modernly-decorated, and I really like the candle light on each table, as if I am dining with stars shining around me. Plus, the kitchen is half-open to diners so you can see how they prepare the foods, interesting!

Yelp
We went here with a group of friends on 8/9/24. We made reservations for our group of 12. The seating accommodated our group. The service was poor and slow. Worse, some of us ordered the New York Strip which looked more like sirloin. The "chef" insisted it was the New York Strip. I've never seen a New York strip so thin in places that it was less than a quarter of an inch thick. It was round, and flat. I would encourage folks to go elsewhere if you're looking for a nice steak.

Kristi R.

Yelp
The restaurant is very well run, service is quick, and the servers are helpful and kind. I really enjoyed brunch!

Yelp
Only tried the catering, food was out of this world!!!!!!! Like EVERYTHING! The chicken, the greens, Mac & chs, salad, sweet potatoes & churros!!!!!! OUTSTANDING!!!!

Yelp
Food was delicious! My meat, corn, & tater-loving uncle was impressed with how tasty and tender the meat was. I had the squid-ink pasta with shrimp. Delicious! $36 and it is spicy. The restaurant was busy, and although it looks like they have acoustic treatments on the ceiling, it was a very loud place. They were not quick and the time from sitting down, dining, and leaving was right at 2 hours for our table of 8. I was impressed with their timing, all plates arrived at the same time. This is not a place where: "Entrees come with..." Nothing is included with the meal. Several of us took some of our dinner home. Portions are appropriate. I'll be back again!

Lynn T.

Yelp
Everything was wonderful. Food, drinks, service. The mussels were some of the best I've ever had - and that includes in Maine and Seattle!

Austin F.

Yelp
This place was great, very cool vibe not a huge place but everyone was friendly would def go back! Truffle fries were amazing

Sarah T.

Yelp
We had a reservation at 11:15, were told that there was not a table available and it would be 15 minutes. 30 mins later we were told to wait at the bar. We ordered food and drinks at the bar and then waited an extended period of time. Any time we asked about the wait we were not given a clear answer. There was no consideration of our time at all, we waited for a ridiculous amount of time while tables were empty and people with later reservations sat. As someone who has worked in kitchens and restaurants before I can honestly say that was one of the worst experiences I have had.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! I love how they add a twist to some basic and staple dishes. Whatever you try I'm sure you won't regret it!!

Yelp
Wow! I loved this place. My wife and I were in Springfield and thought we'd check this place out. My fellow Yelpers did me a solid with this recommendation. Great food...better service. If you are in the area, it's a must visit!

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Their brunch is amazing! Their service is amazing! It's my new favorite restaurant. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
#1 way too loud! #2 Snotty wait staff, they argue with patrons about their choices, #3 Some dishes are good for example anything stewed, but the catch of the day for example is usually a dry piece of salmon and way overpriced. Overpriced wine list as well.

Grant W.

Yelp
Long review but worth the read - esp in the post covid service industry. Luminary is by far the best restaurant in Springfield! We have been there 3 times in 6 months and have thoroughly enjoyed our experience each and every time and was our new favorite place after the first visit. First, the food and drinks: the food is so incredible. We have tried 6-8 different things on the menu, (one lunch date and two dinner dates), and each appetizer or meal is just as good as the next. Each meal is so meticulously paired with all the flavors on the plate. Each one is unique, and DIFFERENT than what you find in 99.8% of the restaurants in Springfield. I am so impressed with the fusion of innovation on classic meals. (Highly recommend the Canterbury Prime Ribeye with mojo fries and Cuban slaw. Literally the best dinner I've ever had.) The drinks are SO good, so well crafted and clever! I love the drink names! Second, the service and atmosphere: the vibe in the restaurant is so calm and they play great music! Everyone is there to eat a good meal, nothing rowdy or overly loud. We have seen the same people working each time we have been in there. Servers, kitchen staff, and the owners. Every single time the service is impeccable. Quick, SO informative and knowledgeable about the drinks and food menu. Friendly and personable, and you can tell they LOVE working there! They all operate like a big family! I'm the post covid world, we have had 75% of our dining out experience be poor due to the staff. The complete opposite can be said for Luminary! We had 3 different people fill out water glasses last night. They all work together to make sure every table is taken care of and enjoying the dining experience and atmosphere. Third, supporting a small business: last night at dinner I posted a picture of Grant as soon as we got there about it being our last date until the wedding, tagged them, and then we put our phones away. After our meal, and dessert was ordered, one of the servers (not ours) came over to our table with a bottle of Rosè, and two glasses. We were so confused at first that we didn't order that. The owner, Aurora, had seen my post on Facebook, and sent over the bottle as a congratulations to us on the wedding, and to thank us for our support. I cried, lol. It was so unexpected, but so so so incredibly sweet. We were just absolutely floored that she would do something like that for us. It was already to go without saying, but this is one of the only restaurants we will eat out at from now on. We are very particular where we want to spend our money, and wouldn't want to go hardly anywhere else but here to support these kind folks!! If you haven't been, go online to their website Luminarychefs.com, and get yourself a reservation, I promise you will not regret it. Thank you Aurora and Jordan for creating our facorite restaurant. I hope you're open for the next 100 years

Demarion P.

Yelp
I came here on Mother's Day and really enjoyed the menu they had for this time. I ordered the Burrata Salad, Nduja Grilled Cheese, and a Strawberry Crepe. I had a reservation and when I arrived it took only a minute to be seated. The waiter I had was also the Chef's brother and he was one of the best waiters I have ever had the joy of talking to. I would most definitely come here again, and I will be sure to refer this place to my friends and anyone I know. My overall experience and rating for this place is a 5 star. My Compliments to all the workers and the Chef.

Kate F.

Yelp
Some of the best food I've eaten anywhere in the world. Clever dishes, vibrant flavors, beautiful presentation.

Yelp
We had the best food of our lives last night at Luminary Kitchen & Provisions in Springfield, IL. They catered to all three of my dietary restrictions, but what was so impressive is that their food was already so clean and fresh that hardly any adjustments needed to be made. I think we finally understand the concept of cooking as an art. Just as a beautiful painting or book can move you, apparently so can a well crafted meal. These aren't just chefs, they are artists. We will definitely be back. I give it 7 out of 5 stars. P.S. I never heard my husband say he could cry because his food was so good, but that was his response to the lamb dish that was bursting with flavor. And we thought we didn't like lamb. I think our favorite was the pork collar though, perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. I seriously need some cooking lessons now, because apparently I have no idea what I'm doing.

Jake J.

Yelp
This place is consistently putting out a great product and the customer service is impeccable. Came here for our anniversary and it was a perfect evening. The Shishito Peppers and Shrimp Gambas were perfect starters and the cocktail menu is expansive and touches on all spirits to satisfy anyones palate. Cannot express enough how amazing the braised short rib and poblano cheddar grits with sweet corn elote was. Easily one of the best complete dishes I have ever had. The crème brulée tart was also a nice compliment to the meal.

Yelp
Great attention to folks who need gluten friendly options !everything was amazing and the service was outstanding

Caroline Y.

Yelp
Was so disappointed with this place. We we're promised a $37 Barbie dinner with a complimentary drink. We waited over 2 hours and paid over $100 for our dinner that was sub-par. We told them our concerns, and they acted as if they were too busy to care. Didn't even play music. Do NOT go to this place!!!!!!!!!! We asked to speak to the owner/manager Jordan and they said he was not present.
google avatar

Paula R.

Yelp
The food, the service and the ambiance are all top notch! The moment you step through the doors you know it's going to be magical! And their food...Every bite you want to say "omg this is so good" ! We have eaten here many times and literally everything is so good! You can play it safe or have something more adventurous! Make sure you try one of their specialty drinks and save room for dessert!

Aspen P.

Yelp
Luminary is delicious. My favorite is going to their brunch, but recently, my husband and I also tried their evening offerings for dinner, and it was also delicious. I find it hard not to eat everything on my plate when we go there and order as a family, and they do an incredible job of rotating out their menu with drinks as well as food offerings. They tend to have some staples always in the mix, but I love that I can go there and try something new almost every time I eat there.
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
We had a tasty and satisfying lunch at Luminary. The Harvest Breakfast Salad was as good as I recalled it from American Harvest, and the Thrilla from Tortilla (chicken tortilla soup) was a real pleasure. Note that both of these dishes are rather peppery. My companions had the Matty Matheson (Halifax donair gyro), which they enjoyed. The staff was skillful and friendly and the seating comfortable. I'm giving Luminary three stars because of the incredibly high noise level; it was impossible to carry on a conversation! I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from eating at Luminary, but just be aware that you won't be able to hear your meal companions when they speak. But the food was wonderful.

Gary L.

Yelp
We were very disappointed in last night's service and it validated that Curate Restaurant is the best food experience and atmosphere in Springfield. The little salmon tartar at Luminary was the worst I've ever had. It was watery plus had unnecessary sauces, I'm assuming to mask the past its prime not fresh smell of fish in this dish so it should be a solid pass. Their mussels however were totally amazing! The menu short ribs were totally dried out with the usual layer of multiple unfavorable and unnecessary sauces that lose focus on the dish. I paired a red wine with the short ribs but the wine tasted of cardboard and unfortunately oxidized. Overall dining experience was mhh and NOT a steller cooking performance as it should be for your expenses. I hoping the creative food focus can move to showcasing the main ingredient vs. the small accouterments and multiple sauces on the plate.

Easily the best restaurant in Springfield. Inventive and delicious foods, stellar staff. You're missing out if you're not eating here

Yelp
Our favorite spot in Springfield, weather it is a girls brunch, lunch with family or work discussions. Fresh farm to table experience , uniquely curated menu and lovely hosts. Highly recommend!

Marcia R.

Yelp
Most food was good (we had party of 8) and service was excellent. Three of us ordered the rib-eye special which was $52 each and it was absolutely nothing special, not even that good. I would have expected a great steak but nope.

Yelp
Well well well. This is by far my favorite place in Springfield for brunch food. Don't miss out on their specials, either! They have something for everyone and it's most likely something you've never had or a familiar food made in a new and delicious way. Staff here is incredible, professional, and quick. Food also came out fairly fast and was made perfectly. I would not change a single thing about this place. Branch out, invited a friend, try something new, Springfield!

Absolute yum! The salmon salad was like no other I had and it's absolutely delicious and fresh in my opinion. It's mainly a sit in restaurant but don't be afraid to order to go. It was a quick 15 min wait for the food. Or maybe next time I will order ahead.

Yelp
Excellent, flavorful food , prompt and friendly and welcoming service. Highly recommend! Really enjoyed my meal here. We got the shakshuka, empanadas, strawberry cheesecake and the bananas fosters French toast, blood orange mimosa and all were top notch!

Yelp
In a strip mall and you think- really? Then you walk in- the staff is friendly and professional, the decor simple but comfy, and OMG the food is great. They print a one page menu, so rotate dishes on and off. I had a pasta dish it was superb, as was dessert. Sat at Bar by myself, was well taken care of.
