Best New Restaurants in Baltimore, According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"The expansion of food options in North Baltimore’s Cross Keys continues with the recent opening of Mexican restaurant Luna Oaxaca. The menu leans on food from the southern state of Mexico, just like its sister property Sol Oaxaca in Bel Air. Starters include elote painted with serrano aioli, queso fundido, beef empanadas, and grilled octopus marinated in coconut milk and guajillo chiles. Main platters come in heaping portions like the cochinita pibil (pork shoulder wrapped in plantain leaves), arrachera (skirt steak underneath melted Oaxaca cheese), and airline chicken breast bathed in house-made mole sauce. Things get kicked up a notch at Sunday brunch with spicy cocktails like a Mexican Crush with jalapeño-infused tequila, a Bloody Maria, and a michelada with house mix and beer of choice." - Jess Mayhugh

Enjoyed a delicious meal with my favorite person here. We started our meal with handmade guacamole and freshly made chips. We asked for ours to be spicy. It was so good! It was not spicy as in hot burning or anything like that. It just added flavor and was amazing!! And the freshly made chips were warm and perfect! We shared the Mole for our entree. It too was good. We each ordered a mezcal drink and again….delicious!!!! We had a great experience. Our server was attentive and helpful. Plenty of outdoor seating and we enjoyed our meal under the stars. We would absolutely return. We had no room to try a dessert this time. Next time!

Alex was excellent he gave some suggestions that were incredibly delicious. Not one time did we have to look for him, on top of everything the entire time. The Lamb Cops OMG and the Arrachera I won’t know what to pick next time. Save room for the drinks …… top notch. We will be back for sure maybe not with the kids lol although very kid friendly.

Fantastic new addition at Cross Keys! The food was exceptional. The guacamole was fantastic. The offer spice levels, and it was so well made with hot, fresh chips. Chicken Mole was really good, almost as good as my fave previous mole at a restaurant that I loved that closed. Ordered a side of plantains and they were the best I’ve had in a long time (fresh ripe plantain, and were cooked with a slight crust / crisp The crab quesadillas were delish, and the empanadas are as good as any I’ve had in Baltimore! About the only thing we didn’t love was that the indoor space is a bit loud and not the most comfortable. We had hoped to sit outside but it was raining. But a small thing. Overall, a home run! Highly recommended.

We stopped by for a quick lunch. Service was quick and efficient. Food was great, we got mole and octopus - both were solid. Though it is a new spot, their menu is somewhat limited. But overall nice experience.

I came and I changed my rating ! This place is hard to find bc the gps will take you to the hotel . But if you come through the main entrance go right and it’s on the corner ! Ok but let’s get into the food and drinks !! GET THE PASSIONFRUIT MARGARITA WITH THE SALT RIM !(thank me later) the elote is top tier , the fundido with the slow roasted pork 10/10! The chorizo mashed potatoes 😘. The star of the show was the pizole verde OMG AMAZE BALLS ! My husband tore the fur off the lamb chops with the poblano mashed potatoes!! We sat at the bar and he was amazing (remembered him from blue agave) !! The price point is a little up there but it’s village of cross keys (IYKYK) ! Overall experience was excellent! We will be back !**************************************************** Original post This place is not opened in the village of cross keys !! Drove all the way there and it’s now gonna be a Chinese restaurant of some sorts !! Update the google 😂😂😂😂😂

Alex was an amazing server. The Queso Fondito was incredible… and the pork shoulder could feed 2 or 3 people. We will definitely be back!

The drinks from Stephanie were delicious, the spicy mezcal margarita and espresso martini were in a class alone. Alex was attentive and was excited that we loved his recommendations. I filled up on the guacamole but the leftovers traveled beautifully. I can't wait for my next visit! Cheers

I just moved here from New Mexico and was craving a good margarita and mole. WOW! Luna’s mole is even better than a multi-James Beard award winning restaurant in Santa Fe. This will be my new spot. Great, relaxed and beautiful atmosphere. Friendly folks. Killer food and drinks.

Yelp
My first visit at Luna Oaxaca with reservations for dinner and we were seated immediately. Our server was Ronnie. Service was prompt with carafe of iced water poured tableside. We started off with drinks and margaritas were delicious. My mezcal margarita with fresh hibiscus was smoky and not too sweet, the sugared rim was nice touch. For appetizer, we shared the empanadas con pollo. I liked the balance of the toasted empanada pastry packed with shredded chicken and ooze of cheese. The chipotle aioli was a nice complement with a touch of subtle heat. I was not a fan of the side house salad though the red onions could've been served as salsa criolla instead. Ours had too many lettuce ribs. On to the entree and I chose the enchilada potocinas con camarones y mole. This dish was delicious and the amount of mole was perfect, except I was disappointed to taste chopped shrimp. I hope they consider changing to whole pieces as each could easily fill 2-3 plump ones per enchilada (the dish came with 3). And para postre, we finished with the in-house made tres leches cake. Generous serving of sponge cake, creamy milk poured over with a dolop of fresh whipped cream and a sprinkling of canela. It was delicious. Located in the Village of Cross Key, it shares parking with other shops. Same center with Cece, Nine Tailed Fox, Blue Mercury, and Always Ice Cream. Note the walk-up has a ramp, however caution there is a marked step at the entrance door. I do agree with others the noise levels are earsplitting.

Yelp
This was our first time here. There's not a ton of indoor seating which explains why reservations fill up fast. You could eat at the bar. The outdoor seating is great but most of it is uncovered. There are a handful of tables that are under the building awning. Overall, the restaurant was cool inside. Food was delicious and prepared well. We started with the guacamole. Both of us got the skinny margarita, which we enjoyed as it was less sweet than normal margaritas. Dinner was really delicious. We will be back!

Yelp
On a recent lunch with one of my friends we decided to try Luna Oaxaca since I had previously seen they were open and serving brunch. We both agreed Luna Oaxaca was a good choice. Luna Oaxaca is one of the newer restaurants in the Cross Keys center, nestled off to the side by itself. The sleek yet minimalistic decor of the interior is nice and open, and they have outside seating for those warmer days and nights. Although we went for brunch, I wasn't really in the mood for their brunchy items since most have eggs and I'm no egg eater. So, I settled on the Carne Asada tacos since tacos are always my go to when trying a new Mexican restaurant. I also ordered a side of chips & salsa to see how well they did those. The chips & salsa were pretty tasty; I could've used a bit more spice in the salsa but that's my personal taste buds. The Carne Asada tacos were seasoned well and cooked perfectly. And actually, filled with meat and pico de gallo. My friend ordered the veggie tacos and said those were quite tasty too. I'm always on the hunt for a good Mexican restaurant and Luna Oaxaca is one I'll definitely make a trip to again to try some of their other menu items. The service was good, and the food was tasty, so that's a win in my book.

Yelp
We decided to try this new Mexican place at Cross Keys. We were able to get a table for 2 without a wait on Sunday at 6. It was very good. The margarita was very good and we had the mole chicken and the salmon which was prepared with toasted tortilla chips, sweet potatoes and beets. Both were quite good though the salmon was a bit overcooked. The entrees were about $30 each which is a bit steep but you can get a taco plate for $16. We'll be back to try more!

Yelp
Sadly, I did not get our server's name, but it might as well be Job. As in the patience of Job. This man handled 8 people (including 3 little boys and two adult boys) with patience and grace. And I suspect, all without gummies. The scene was chaotic. It was loud. There was rudeness, indecisiveness, ignorance and bliss. He remained poised and calm. Like a sturdy anchored tree in a raging storm around him, he patiently waited on us amongst the shouts and Pokemon cards strewn all about the table and floor, during the screaming and running around the restaurant, and while one of us simply needed a Skinny Margarita. Or two. Thank you, unidentified middle aged man server, for remaining at the scene of this dinner trainwreck. (Excellent cuisine and cocktails, phenomenal service, great location)

Yelp
The atmosphere is a 10, can't wait to head back once the weather is consistently good and sit on the lovely patio. The guac is delicious and they make a mean margarita. I really enjoyed the Arrachera, although the serving of beans was stingy, particularly in comparison to the other side dish.

Yelp
Great service. Fantastic cocktails, chips and salsa. The burrito was tasty and the portions were not huge but big enough. I will definitely return.

Yelp
We had lunch at Luna Oaxaca today. I arrived early and was surprised there was no seating for overflow or waiting customers. I chalked that up to this establishment being freshly opened. The guacamole was fresh but on the salty side and not as "medium spicy" as I would have expected. My Pulpo (grilled octopus) was basic. There was no outstanding flavor/spice. The accompanying carrots were flavorless and the chorizo mashed potatoes were lacking chorizo. The guava mezcal margarita was nice. As we were leaving, we were offered a Tshirt with Luna Oaxaca written on the front. It should have said: "My palate went to Luna Oaxaca and all I got was this lousy T shirt"

Yelp
Came for dinner with a group of friends... The restaurant is in a cute location, restaurant itself is very casual. Tried the skinny margarita (passion fruit), it was very good. Enjoyed the guacamole as well. The plantains were good. The chicken & beef empanadas were OK. Steak tacos were OK. Didn't get to try the shrimp taco because the shrimp was raw. Mentioned it to the waiter, he shrugged it off, didn't say anything. Service was fine. Parking is available.

Yelp
After the long walk thru Cross Keys just to find the Luna Oaxaca. Poor Signage, got tithe restaurant patio that is very barren. Need planters and color other than the grey tables and plain concrete. Service was slow and relaxed. Ordered Chips and Salsa. No heat in the salsa, but for an upcharge you can have a 1 oz soufflé cup of ground scotch bonnets. No thanks but if you add a teaspoonful of it to the salsa , be careful. Chicken Taquitos were good , but I have never seen purple cabbage over taquitos and I have been in Mexico a lot in my time here on Earth. It would have been nice to have both entrees brought at the same time . I had the Arrachera , a skirt steak that I ordered medium rare. Medium well is what I received and the Oaxaca was a layer of gummy cheese. The vegetables were seasonal. I didn't know cauliflower and purple cabbage was a spring vegetable especially in a Mexican restaurant . Drinks were good , the house Margarita spicy. I would probably not come back as their menu is meh!!

Yelp
Underwhelming and not very authentic. Guac was pretty good and the chips were warm/fresh but the entres were middle of the road at best. Probs better for the bar crowd than those in search of fine dining. I never say this, but it was a bit loud indoors. Outdoor seating definitely the better bet.

Yelp
New restaurant in the area, wanted to try it out. Went on Cinco De Mayo, so expected a wait and it to be busy. It definitely was, which was good to see. Hostess was very open about having to wait for a table but was very helpful. We got sat and no one came over to our table, we had to flag our hostess down again to get someone over. I attribute it to it being new and also busy for the holiday. We sat outside, they had tables with and without umbrella coverings and it was a nice view. The guac was made fresh and tasted great, my friend had shrimp tacos which were delicious and I had the Arrachera with shrimp on the side and it was done beautifully. The mango margarita was also fantastic. Overall about $100 for two people, so a little pricey but not terrible. Will definitely go again!

Yelp
We've been here twice since it opened and both times the food, and the service, are just so-so. First time we sat at a table & had to keep asking waiter for service. No one ever came to see if we needed anything or if we wanted a second drink. Second time we sat at the bar, expecting more attention & still didn't get it. Neither bartender asked us if we wanted a second drink or even dessert! I had the Avocado caesar salad with salmon, which was overcooked. Rest of the salad, aside from the avocado, consisted of lettuce & a few meager slices of cucumber. Not a very exciting meal but I just wanted something lighter. Skinny margarita was better than their regular margarita for some reason. Overall, I might give restaurant a third try but we've been pretty underwhelmed with Luna Oaxaca. It has potential!

Yelp
This newly opened restaurant is a delight. The theme is upscale Mexican cuisine, but the prices are quite reasonable and food is excellent. Consider going on a pleasant evening and request an outdoors table. They don't accept reservations for the outdoor tables (only indoors) but they have a very large area with plenty of tables with umbrellas to shield the sun. The al fresco experience is among the best around - quiet and picturesque. I should also note that while Google labels the prices as in the $30 - $50 range, most entrees are in the $25 to $35 range. Perhaps the Google range included appetizers. In any event, food and service are excellent. Our server, JuanCarlos, was a charmer.

Yelp
food and service were fantastic! Restaurant decor was very nice and the bathrooms were lovely!

Yelp
overpriced, underwhelming tex mex. the enchiladas lacked flavor. the avocado salad with steak was decent but needed more toppings. was mostly lettuce although the steak was delicious. $15 guacamole that I could have made better at home. the margaritas were overly sweet. I feel like the only reason they can charge what they do is location. save your money and go to clavel and if you want medicocre tex mex, papis is comparable for half the price.

Yelp
A group of friends had dinner there. The food was really good and the service was fine. BUT the noise level inside the restaurant was so high that we could barely hear the person at the desk. There is a long and very noisy bar. I didn't see any sound dampening measures inside - only a lot of hard surfaces and a high ceiling. The only choice was to eat on the terrace, which we did despite it being a little chilly.
