End Of An Era
My spouse and I have been coming to Lunchbox Lab for over 10 years, so we've seen it through highs and lows -- I'm trying to take an objective approach to this.
TL;DR
- We won't be coming back anymore.
- Higher prices (expected b/c COVID).
- Skeleton crew (expected b/c COVID) - it takes a while to get seated and get your food.
- Food quality nowhere close to its heyday - I wish I'd just paid and left without eating.
- The waiting staff are clearly trying, but even with their efforts, I did not enjoy the experience.
More details
For a while Lunchbox Lab kept the quality bar high even if the prices were higher and it took an order of magnitude longer to get seated. At one point in 2021, the time between arrival and getting the food was so long that we stopped going as frequently as before, but at least the food hit the sweet spot... we understood the situation, and accepted the reality.
Today's order
- 2x Burgers -- they both looked as if they'd had a heavy weight on top of them, so the bread was smashed -- the height of the burger was likely half of what it used to be. I ordered mine medium, and I got a well-done... I think. The bun was dry on the inside, and soggy in the outside bottom.
- Tots -- salty.
- Onion rings -- not sure if these had been fried multiple times before, but while the flavor of some bits was good, more than half was a glut of batter with some remains of onion.
- Shake -- liked it!
- Appetizer -- buffalo chicken rollups. These looked like they had been taken out of the freezer, dropped in the fryer, and then thrown into a plate. The bottom was crusty and crumbly.
Our server was kind and friendly. You can tell she was clearly trying and had tons to deal with. Even with everything going in, she was still efficient and professional. At the end, our server asked how was the food. We mentioned that it was different from what it used to be.
After a disappointing meal today, we've decided to keep the good memories of the place, and not return in the future. Many places do a great burger... Lunchbox had their own identity and ideas executed fairly well. Without a quality burger, Lunchbox might as well close for good since that's their core business.
On the way out, I noticed a couple of tables that were yet to be bused -- all had remains of food... something I don't recall ever seeing on my way out.
