I recently had the most extraordinary farro here, and I never thought I'd ever say those words about any farro dish!! But this was so delicious, so full of complex, full flavor...and only the accompaniment to the also-delicious duck, as part of the Anatra Al Marsala!!
But when it comes down to it, EVERYTHING I've ever ordered from Lupa Trattoria has been absolutely DELICIOUS!! The Pappardelle Sugo D'agnello (ribbons of fresh pasta in a lamb sauce) is to-die-for, the Bucatini Amatriciana (a classic preparation with caramelized onion, pancetta and Romano cheese) is a perfect execution of this dish, the Gnocchi al Cinghiale (gnocchi in a braised boar sauce) is sublimely meaty, and the Ravioli alla Modenese (housemade ravioli filled with ricotta cheese and spinach) in a brown butter and sage sauce...what's not to like??? We always share a burrata and speck salad (with arugula!), and also enjoy the well-prepared Carpaccio di Carne. Sometimes we also split their classic Caesar, because yum! And my dining experience isn't complete without a piece of their Tiramisu, which is *almost* as good as the one I make (what, I still like my own best!).
The dining room is split into two levels: The lower level is WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE if you simply want to come in and pick up take-out or be seated on that level...But that means if you rely on a wheelchair, you won't be able to access the upper level and any bathroom they might have. Last time we got food from Lupa, we got take-out, so this wasn't an issue for me personally...and at that time (a month or two ago), they weren't doing indoor seating on the lower level, so definitely call ahead of time to see what your options are.
This is the kind of restaurant you take your parents when they come visit you in San Francisco: Warmly-lit, quaint, great food, Italian accents, and excellent service, in a safe, family-friendly neighborhood, right on a nice main street to meander along for an after-dinner walk.
It'd also be great for a more formal date (do the young kids even do anything other than coffee or drinks anymore??). I love this kind of restaurant, it reminds me of an older generation of restaurants, of genteel dining where it isn't too loud to hear the people you're eating with, where the food is delicious and plentiful, but made with classic old-country recipes, rather than foodie ingredients you have to google before ordering. I really wish there were more restaurants like Lupa Trattoria...this place really IS a gem!!
