THE DISAPPOINTMENTS! NO BLACK BEANS!!!
Originally I held high hopes for the ORIGINAL LUPE TORTILLA, but like a glass mirror that has been thrown onto the ground, those high hopes were shattered into a million pieces after the poor service that was received and the mediocre food that was served. Admittedly, it wasn't the worst service, but it also wasn't anything to brag about in terms of great customer service.
Upon our arrival, hubby and I quickly found out that this place is hopping on a Friday evening! Red flag! Cars were everywhere, not an available parking spot in sight. Not to mention, this establishment is in conjunction with several other establishments like a restaurant district. While my husband was trying to find a parking spot, I went into the restaurant to inquire about the wait time. As I approached the entrance there was a female hostess or manager cleaning up a spill on the floor. I stood watching her and waiting for her to greet me, but she never did. Therefore, I did her job for her and I greeted her with the nicest and most polite manners letting her know that it's my first time visiting and I would like to get a table for three. She pointed for me to go further inside the restaurant to the other hostesses that appeared to be hiding in a corner. I don't know, it was weird. Nevertheless, we ended up being added to the wait list for an estimated 20 minute wait time. Not bad at all, I thought to myself.
Moreover, as we were waiting to receive a text message that our table was ready, my hubby found a great parking spot directly in front of the building. As he was waiting for the other patrons to move from the parking spot, another smaller car whipped around the corner and stole the spot from my husband while he was trying to back our truck into the spot. Crazy right? So if you dine here on a Friday night, please expect this type of behavior.
Furthermore, we did not have to wait the full 20 minutes for our table which was great. Also we did not have to wait long for our server to come and greet us and take our drink orders. He introduced himself as Francisco and immediately began taking our drinks order. I ordered the frozen Lupe Grand Marnier Margarita with Tajín (it was very good), and my husband ordered a Modelo brew. We were served complimentary tortilla chips and salsa. We ordered queso and guacamole to accompany it. Hands down, their salsa is the best and freshest salsa I've ever tried at any restaurant! It was full of fresh chunks of tomatoes and delectable robust flavors!
In addition to our drinks and complimentary appetizers, I ordered the Lupe salmon with a green salad (lettuce only). Hubby ordered the 1/2 mixed chicken and shrimp fajita entree which was accompanied by refried beans and Mexican rice. The disappointment was in the quality of the food. The flavors were definitely there but my salmon was overcooked leaving it dry and a bit tough to chew. However, the wine sauce and capers that were drizzled on top of the salmon were absolutely delicious. My husband's shrimp were also overcooked causing them to be dry and gummy. His chicken fajitas were a bit dry and uncomfortable to chew, and let alone swallow. The next big disappointment was when my husband ordered his entree, he asked to add black beans to his order. Guess what? They don't serve BLACK BEANS at the Original Lupe Tortilla!!! My husband almost hit the floor when our waiter informed him of this, lol. IT WAS HILARIOUS! Oh and don't let me forget to mention the fact that Francisco forgot to bring the butter sauce that's served with the fajitas. Another disappointment for my husband, lol.
As far as customer service is concerned, it was just okay. Francisco was friendly but he was always MIA (missing in action). Whenever we could flag him down when we needed refills on our chips, our drinks, my husband's missing butter sauce, or whatever we needed, he seemed in a hurry each and every time. I believe this is because the restaurant was understaffed on a busy Friday night! As a result, the servers were working themselves overtime and running around like, "Chickens with their heads cut off!" It was just too much chaos for me.
Overall, I did not enjoy this dining experience to the fullest. Our meal was not enjoyable as we had anticipated but we did enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa along with the queso and guacamole that we ordered on the side. The ambience was extremely noisy which is cool, but I wasn't in the mood for all of that noise. Maybe, hubby and I are spoiled by the Lupe in Tomball because it was our first one to dine at. They were welcoming and friendly. They showed us so much love and gave us samples because it was our first time and their food was the bomb dot com! It was the best Tex Mex I'd ever had! I swear it was! Anywho, I don't think we'll ever grace this establishment again. It really hurts the heart when you spend over $100 on a meal and you leave completely unsatisfied. Bummer!
