Hate to be that person, but when you modernize the banh mi and try to make it appeal to a specific audience. You lose all the unique qualities and flavors that makes banh mi.....well, banh mi! Don't get me wrong, it's great to have options for those who have dietary restrictions....but do we really need to have avocado as a topping option?
I'm a banh mi snob, what can I say? The banh mi I grew up with usually was adorned with meat (or veg option), pate, mayo, cilantro, jalapeno, pickled daikon and carrots. It's savory, creamy, tangy, spicy, and crunchy! You've already got all these flavors, why add anything additional?
Enough of my rant, I have favorite banh mi spots but they're all out of the way. I've been to the Lu's on Nicollet -- always busy and jam packed. First time I've been to this location in NE, pretty slow and less people but that's just the way I like it. Toppings and all of that are laid out like yes, if I must say it, Subway. I always get my usual cold cut and all the fixings. They're a bit skimpy on the meat though, but I always take advantage of that and load up on xxtra pickled daikon and carrots. I also sometimes like to add a teeny tiny bit of soy sauce for a bit of saltiness. Besides banh mi, they have rice/noodle bowls, other appetizers, all kinds of drinks, and yes, you can definitely get Vietnamese coffee here or a bag of chips on the side with your sandwich.
Now go get your fix of banh mi, but whatever you do or get is on you. Just try not to upset my ancestors and I alriiiiight?
