When a mate suggested we meet at Lustre Pearl to catch up... I wasn't really that stoked about going. Not being part of the Rainey Street age group, I thought some other options could be better. But, I acquiesced since the location was in my SW Austin hood. We met up during a weekday, so parking wasn't an issue and from the outside, it looked pretty mundane. Once inside, I noted the place is friggin huge! The back patio/yard area was enormous, completely surprising from the front of house footprint. In addition, there was another structure dedicated to a live music stage and an whole other bar. Not a massive live music aficionado and on this occasion, they had a couple of dudes strumming on a guitar. Announcing with gusto the upcoming USA footie game coming up later in the evening every 15 mins or so. I cannot comment exactly how many folks were in the bar, but there were only a few.
My mate joined and we headed outside to sit at one of the picnickety tables outside the main bar area. Ordered a couple of different beverages from the bartender, tendered my card to start a tab. The bartender was attentive and made our drinks licky split and out we went. My margarita was on point, but they don't serve Jameson unfortunately. Outside, there were a couple of food trucks, however we weren't in the hunger mood. My mates doggy was happily bouncing around grabbing treats from his master. Conversation flowed smoothly since we were not being droned out by music. Interestingly, now I think about it, we never had a server. I just waiting on us, shoveling drinks from bar to our table just outside. No one ever approached us.
We finished up outside around 7pm and the scene was pretty mellow still, not many people at all outside, however inside where our bar was, some lively folks were gathering. And this is when it reminded me that this bar/scene pedigree definitely was Rainey Street. Petite gurls, dressed to the nine's in tight little dresses, well painted and their beau's, not so petite, all hanging about. It took a bit longer now to get drinks so we moved to the front patio and the outside bar area so we could be served without feeling lightheaded by the preponderance of Axe and Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Parfum now filling the air. The parking lot was now filling up with over the top SUV's as the youth start coming in. All good.
I could really see myself coming back, hanging outside back and having an attentive server waiting on us. The food trucks looked busy and the tray's coming out looked tasty. Definitely enjoying the options coming to SW these days, the need going north over the river is getting less an less every year.
