Great under-the-radar place to get dumplings and pan fried buns without a long wait.
Luyu Dumplings sits in this weird spot that's in a plaza that is hugging a curve, that is in between the freeway, Puente Hills Mall and Costco. The don't have a restroom in their place but you are able to use the restroom at the beauty spa next door which makes for a really, really nice restroom for a hole-in-the-wall restaurant.
They have various dumplings, potstickers, steamed soup dumplings, pan fried buns, noodles, fried rice, soups and green onion pancakes.
Potstickers - These come ten per order. The are served upside down with the spiderwebbing on top, just how I like it. I did read reviews where they said the skin was very soft so I asked for them to pan fry these crispier and they came out great. If you like them crisp on one side, be like me and ask them to cook it longer. I think I would have been disappointed if I didn't ask for that. As for filling in the potsticker, they only have one pork variety vs. with the boiled dumplings there are 16 different meat and veggie combos. Taste was good, what I expect from a potsticker.
Pork with Green Wonton Soup - For $7.80 this is a massive bowl of bowl of soup. I think there were eight wontons in there? If you get the "with green" version, the greens are not in the wontons, the greens are in the soup, which consists of green onions, fried onions, cilantro and seaweed. A simple but refreshing soupl. Good for sharing or for a meal by itself.
Green Onion Pancake - This, as served was a bit disappointing. Their green onion pancake is thin like a tortilla with onions inside, which makes it good for wrapping for a cold beef roll, but not so great when served by itself. The interesting thing is that the pancake itself is not that bad, it's that they serve it really limp and not crispy at all. I ate one piece and took the rest home. At home I put it in the toaster for a minute and it came out perfect with a slightly crispy edge. I'm not sure why they don't pan fry this for longer here (same issue with the potstickers) so if you have to have this, maybe ask for them to cook it longer until it browns a bit.
A lot of tables ordered the pan fried buns but I didn't get to try that this time, maybe next time!
