Luz Hotel

Been staying here for a few days. I have nothing really bad to say about this place.. it's cleaniness is maintained to their fullest, even the customers are great at keeping the shared bathroom clean. Which is fantastic. Room has a huge closet which some of the hotels don't even have a small closet. Just follow the rules and don't bring hella seedy traffic through these nice folks hotel and the mangers are pretty quiet. It's also a lot calmer than some most of the hotels in the area. Which is super awesome.

I stayed at Luz for four nights and didn't have any problems really. The rooms are a bit small but decent for the price and location. There are two bathrooms that are shared by all the rented rooms on the first floor; they were clean and I didn't have a problem getting one when I needed. The shower was different; there is only one for all the guests and I had to wait my turn a few times. Note: give the shower 4-5 minutes to warm up and then it's nice. I was in room three, which is near the front, and you can hear the voices from street. Ask for a room closer to back if possible. Also the bed dips in the middle so that was a bit uncomfortable. I can't attest to another traveler's comments about bed bugs because I brought my own sheet and slept on top of the duvet. I will say that nothing seemed wrong with my stay. The staff were super friendly and helpful. If you're traveling from/to the airport, the hotel can call a shuttle for $17, much cheaper than a taxi.

This mini hotel is quaint, quiet and the building has a great personality. The owner, Ver, is kind, attentive and efficient. The bed was comfortable and the room was perfect for a weekend stay in the city. The affordability is great and I felt like I got what I paid for. Ver is very helpful and the hotel was in a pretty safe place. No homeless people were around and the surrounding area was quiet and very close to the buses and local transition. Overall, excellent stay and I'll be rebooking again soon.

When we arrived the staff greeted us and check-in was a breeze and we got to our room. Room was what we expected, small, cozy, shared bathrooms. The shower was really, really cold because it was large room that had window open 24/7 and it was bit cold outside. You had to wait for the water to get warm and it was not the best experience. Bathrooms were okay. The room had walls that were literally paper thin, so if noises bother you, remember to bring ear plugs. I also did not understand why the windows in the aisles were kept open 24/7 when it was 10 degrees celcius outside. Overall it was okay experience, but the coldness and bad shower really did have a negative effect on our stay. But for the price, it was really good.

Very very nice stay. I got into SF late and needed a room last minute. Luz was very friendly and helpful with the room and finding me parking. Very much felt like a bed n breakfast. As a former front desk worker I would say this is a great place to stay in SF. After all, you can not beat the rate. Slept like a rock, great stay.

We (two young girls) arrived this evening and were thoroughly disappointed at the hotel. To start off the area around the hotel was quite dangerous, there were drug deals and drunk people smashing bottles and people sleeping on the sidewalk. The parking was off site and was also quite sketchy. The pictures of the hotel were not a clear representation of what the hotel actually was. The hotel looked like a brothel and as two young girls we felt very unsafe. I wouldn't recommend this hotel anyone. The hotel had an immediate smell of urine and cigarettes upon entry. I cannot reinforce enough that the hotel was in a very dangerous end of SanFran and drug deals were happening close by. We also noticed bedbugs without even opening the bed. We actually left within 30 minutes due to feeling very unsafe. The staff at the hotel were also not friendly or helpful.

Staff was very courteous and helpful. Room was nice and clean. If I were to have any suggestion about improving the stay for future guests I would say to possibly add a small refrigerator and microwave to the rooms. Other than that it was a very nice stay.

If you're looking to spend ~$100 a night and be in central San Francisco, you have to accept your choices will be limited. A Luz hotel provides a relatively decent location, well situated for the busy Polk street and Union Square, a really comfy bed, and helpful staff. In a front facing room the noise was actually acceptable, save for buses and garbage trucks (the latter unfortunately seemed to me a couple of stops one night). Ultimately, if you want a cheap guest house to stay in I can't complain, it compares evenly with guest houses I've stayed in in both the UK and Germany. However you have to be ready for out of date decor and a single shower for each floor, so do decide whether you might want to spend twice as much to stay in a more upscale hotel.

The owner who is an actual tenant is irresponsible and rude. He threatened me with the police after accepting my money and gifts for the hotel which I was not able to use to help with the upkeep of this old building. There is a lay over rug covering whatever rug that hasn't been changed since 2008. I'm coughing repeatedly probably from black mold and whatever old building poisoning issues that arrive from that. Ver, the owner will be upset once he gets the papers in the mail that he's going to be sued. I've never talked to him in the manner where he has felt disrespected or isolated or any of nature. He came to my door in a abrupt rude manner as if I was a disturbance to the hotel or a nuisance. When I've done nothing but pay him his money and help in the upkeep of this building. He created a hostile environment and loss a vote in my book and I see to it that this building be bought to code, justice and a good cleaning.

Absolutely terrible service. I tried to use them through Bag BNB to drop off my luggage for the day. Called around 8am to ask for directions on how to check in/nearest BART station to get off at close to the hotel as I'm not from the area, and the guy who answered was the rudest person I have ever dealt with. He started screaming saying there's "simple directions" for this process when there was NOT whatsoever. On Bag BNB it said It was some grocery shop called the Angel and in the confirmation email it say Luz Hotel. So obviously it's confusing. Judging from the reviews of people who actually stayed there, doesn't seem like it would be the best place for lodging either. If you can't treat your customers with respect, then you shouldn't be in business, period. Absolutely would not recommend whatsoever.

What can I say...it was like staying with good friends and family! We were new to this very diverse area of downtown sf and this hotel and and friendly staff made us feel right at home and very safe. We ordered outside land festival tickets and coming from MT we had to have them mailed to the Luz because of time constraints and they handled them, they even tracked down the fed ex folks and made sure it was all taken care of! Amazing, courteous, gracious people! The beds were so comfortable and the view was all downtown San Francisco! Albert gave us great suggestions to the real san fran secrets for amazing food, bus routes, and anything we asked about! Even offered us a stadium chair for the festival. Ver was so cool, running the place with class! Best bang for your buck for sure! Much appreciation to them.

I love this hotel absolutely phenomenal. The staff he was super friendly in the rooms were clean spacious and everything you want out of a hotel when you're visiting a new city. Everybody was very hospitable I really appreciate everything everyone has done here

Stayed here for two days and they were so nice! It was my birthday and they even got me a birthday cake and sang to me! They make you feel like very comfortable with everything and the room was clean! Helped us with where to go and how to get around considering we had no idea where we were. Very convenient location. close to union station, ect!

I had a wonderful time at the Luz hotel and plan on coming back when I'm out here. Also the manager here is committed and really took care of my needs while there. In a convenient location, fantastic service and a wonderful stay. Would definitely recommend staying here to anybody

Amazing stay, will come back next time whenever I'm in San Francisco. It's super close to everything like union square, China Town, Financial District. About a 5-10 min walk to those places. There are really good food places nearby too. The place itself was great if you're just there to sleep and then explore. It's pretty safe. There's a gate to enter the hotel. Everything was clean as well such as the restroom, the shower, the room, etc. The workers there were friendly and welcoming.

My stay at the Luz Hotel was way beyond my expectation! When I booked the hotel, I was simply looking for a cheap (for SF standard) place to spend my last two days in SF, as I was moving to another country after living in SF/Bay area for 9 years. But now I feel I was lucky to find that hotel!. It's not a luxury hotel, but the people working there were all genuinely friendly and helpful, from the moment I arrived the hotel until I left there. The room was very cozy and clean, and even had a garden-view. The building itself is very old, but very well maintained. I could tell the folks there are very proud of it :) I was a bit worried about using shared shower and bathroom, but they were not crowded at all. The pressure of the hot shower could be better, but was not a big deal. Free and fast wi-fi. As for the location, tenderloin area is not the fanciest part of the city, but hey, they have the most affordable and delicious restaurants all around. It's also a few blocks away from Nob Hill area, and a few mins walk from downtown area (including union square). Thank you, Luz, for making my last days in SF so comfortable and pleasant!

We had an excellent stay at the Luz Hotel. The building is old, but very nicely maintained and decorated. The owners were on site and made sure that all of our needs were met. Their friendliness made us feel as if we were guests in someone's home.

This place was great. I didn't realize I had booked a european style place with shared bathrooms and showers and I accidently booked a room for 1 for my husband and I. The front desk was so accommodating. They offered us a bigger room and even said we could cancel if we weren't ok with the shared situation. It ended up being GREAT! I felt like I was staying at a friends house, thats how welcoming they were. The place was very clean and that was my biggest concern. I felt very safe in my room and where the hotel was located. The bed was very comfortable as were the linens. Rooms are simple and small but provide just what you need. Sink, comfy bed, small tv, towels and toiletries. It has the personal touches that big chains don't have. The owners were just amazing. We even got a free parting gift!

I loved my stay at the Luz Hotel! The staff are just so incredibly warm, and friendly. They go above and beyond to personalize your stay with them, always greeting you by your name, and checking that you're ok. My room was small but quaint and exactly what I needed for my stay. It's a stone's throw away from Union Square, and lots of things around making the lcoation very convenient. If you're a budget traveller, but want more a nice quiet clean place to stay, this is perfect.

Been residing here for more than six months and so far so good. Rate is not bad at all . Location is the best. It is right in the heart of the City. Transportation is in front of the hotel. . Rooms are clean Hallways and lobby are clean daily. No one bothers you at night unless you ask for it ( this hotel cater to Gays and Lesbians ) even though it is at the tenderloin district no one has bother me. Hotel is well secured. Three room cleaners for a 24 room hotel That's a plus. So far I have seen cockroach 3 times in my six months of staying here. Houses in san Francisco are side by side. Pest can cross on a daily basis LOL. Hotel has a Pest control come in once a month and the staff are nice. Can't ask for more for what I am paying. Dennis Collier

This is an incredibly NICE place; I found a room through them for some folks that had just arrived here in the city. The staff made the impossible happen! VER CANDARI is one of the KINDEST person you will work with; he took, sight unseen a lovely family and even went so far as to go yet more steps so as to facilitate a complicated process. I am so impressed with him, his kindness, compassion, educated approach to things and the humanitarian side to him which is frankly not an every day event! I want everyone who is reading this to know they are in my books, one of the best and most professional places, without stigma nor judgment, they treat everyone with respect and kindness; it is a gift to have this treasure in our town - VER THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!!! We are in deep gratitude for the resources and services you provide for folks wishing to have a nice stay in a city that brings a lot of people in. It is clean, safe and you are a gift to and for many. Thank you. We appreciate this hugely. Our community is lucky to have you :)

This place was awful. Would never stay here nor would I recommend for anyone else to. When we got there the room smelled like urine. We decided to overlook it a it was a low price, but then we noticed: Holes in the sheets, junkies in the building, no seat guards for the shared toilet, a bio-hazardous needle receptacle in the bathroom, and to top it all off, when we were about to got to sleep, roaches. We left that night and still had to fight for a partial refund even after the poor conditions.

If you are low maintenance and don't require a lot of pampering, this is the place for you. If you are high maintenance and going to look for things to complain about, stay away. Before I moved into the place, I was living in a two bedroom apartment in Oakland, California. When I walked into the door of the hotel, they showed me a room and I knew I could live in it forever. It is truly a real hotel California, as in the Eagle's version of the word. The people are very friendly; you get the feeling this is a real community. And on Christmas Day and Christmas, the owner has given free rent to everyone in the building to show respect to his mother that has passed. They give Christmas dinner and New Years parties every year for the tenants. It is the kind of place that if you don't have soap or need help with anything, someone is always willing to accommodate you. It is in the heart of downtown San Francisco, close to everything you would like to walk to. You can check out, but you can never leave. Albert Young
