Austin Restaurant Openings to Know Right Now, March 2025 | Eater Austin

"A fresh Tex-Mex spot on San Antonio’s Riverwalk with a patio offering water views and a menu heavy on Tex-Mex staples: an entire section dedicated to rellenos, appetizers ranging from classic nachos to modern crudo, taco plates, fajitas, redfish escabeche, and multiple salads with the option to add proteins. Finish the meal with flan for dessert." - Courtney E. Smith

This place is fairly new; just in time for Fiesta. We had a little bit of trouble finding it since it has no visible facade outside the building. Once we found it, the theme changes completely. I was wowed for the great job they did with the design, furniture picks, music and decor selections. We were greeted and sedated right away. It was past lunch time and it was not busy at all. We ordered the ceviche as an appetizer, Combo 3 and tacos de cochinita as main dish and they were excellent. The only problem was that the ceviche was a little bit bland, but got fixed with some salt and lime. The restroom needed some attentions too. Overall the experience was really good and I wish the best for this new place. Definitely coming back. Well done!

Update: After seeing the owners quick response we decided to try our luck again. 4 dinners ordered. Only one wasn’t right. So it’s better. The food is good. I took pictures the second time. Waiter definitely got 3 out of 4 orders totally wrong. The food we ended up with was good. But not what we ordered. They do charge for chips and salsa too. Nice clean restaurant. If you choose to try them. Good luck on a correct order. I didn’t bother taking pictures.

I came in for an early dinner. As I entered, I was greeted by a few of the restaurant staff. I was asked if I had a reservation, and was promptly seated. The service was 10/10. My server correctly inferred my dietary restrictions and assured me which of my interests on the menu would appropriately align. I started with the pozole. It had a vegan tomatillo broth with hominy, cabbage, and avocado. The soup was very good. I ordered the shrimp tacos and black beans with rice. The beans and rice were on point. The shrimp tasted fresh and had a good sear. I liked the salsa on the tacos; it meshed well with the overall flavors. Overall, it was a very satisfying visit.

Great place with seating above the river walk. The service was very attentive. The food is definitely freshly made and tasty. The salsa is just right. The mole enchiladas were so good and it is hard to find good mole. Steak fajita meat was very good. The charros are very, very good.

This place is such a hidden gem. I loved the modern look and had some great food! Some takeaways: 1. They offer mocktail versions of their cocktails due to having non-alcoholic Tequila and Rum! 2. The customer service was superb. Natalia was super kind and professional. 3. The ceviche is super fresh! If you like it very lime-y, I would recommend additional limes on the side, but I really liked it! 4. The green pozole is VEGAN! Super delicious, despite not having any meat in it. Highly recommend. 5. I had the steak taco plate and it was so much food! Love that they top off the tacos with queso fresco and the tacos were so big! It comes with 3, but I could only eat 2. The black beans and rice are absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to come back for more! Perfect for a date night and a birthday dinner.

Love the new restaurant! The decor and vibe is amazing. The drinks & ceviche were delicious. The view of the river walk was great! Would highly recommend. Enjoyed a great preshow meal.

I really enjoyed my visit to Luz Roja. The food and the atmosphere were amazing. From the paintings to the different seating areas, I loved it all. 😍. I had the chicken Pollo a la parrilla with black beans and white rice and the chicken was so tender and flavorfull. All of the flavors complimented each other. My friend ordered the puffy tacos with beef Picadillo. 😋 Everything was so delicious and I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area. They have margaritas, beer and the happy hour is from 3-6 PM. The restaurant just opened up last week so swing by and show them love ❤️! 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Google
Off the main path of River Walk restaurants. It is a nice space and quiet balcony seating. Chips were homemade and delicious but salsa was just ok. Don’t expect free chips/salsa here. Queso was thick and creamy. Enchiladas were good quality but not anything extraordinary. Would probably try elsewhere next time.

Yelp
Another good Yelp find!!! Good food, service, and ambience. We got there for lunch and ordered off their lunch menu.

Yelp
Yes yes yes we found a new local place. Warm welcoming, neighborhood vibe, service on point - no service was awesome (thx Sam), food dynamite. The place is spotless! Check out the ! Happy hour, yes and strong! We will set up a Thirsty Thursdays for sure. They gained us local neighbor customers. PS they do a neighborhood discount.... Salud

Yelp
This place is a little further down the Riverwalk where it is quiet and less touristy. With outdoor seating along the river, it is beautiful and peaceful. They are relatively new and closing early so make sure to get there by 7:30 for dinner. We are from Los Angeles and were looking for a more authentic Mexican menu, with the LA flare as my husband is vegetarian. I looked at seven or eight menus, and none of them had great options that did not involve meat or fish. Luz Roja was the only one that had several dishes that went beyond just cheese, including vegetables in an enchilada and chili relleno- perfect! The vegetarian enchiladas with the garlic white rice that my husband had was piping hot and delicious. He was very happy. I got the Cochinita Pibil Tacos with Spanish rice. They plate was beautiful, but as far as spice they were lacking. I'm used to this dish being spicier. Probably more designed for this area. My food wasn't quite as hot as my husband's, but besides that it was also delicious. Johnathan was our waiter and he was an absolute delight! We came near the end of closing, so got more time to chat about San Antonio and he was kind and personable and wanted to ensure we had a great experience at the restaurant. If you were looking to get away from the crowds and enjoy a delicious meal, this is the place.

Yelp
Great Tex mex. Trey the flautas. Also good happy hour prices and it's right on the river. They have a party room too.

Yelp
I went to Luz Roja with a party of over 16 people, and the service was amazing. The restaurant wasn't too busy, which made the whole experience feel calm and relaxed. If you're looking for a downtown spot that isn't overly crowded, this is definitely one to check out. Our drinks came out fast, and the appetizers were served pretty quickly too. I ordered the grilled chicken with poblano cream and it was so good. My only suggestion would be to use a boneless chicken breast next time, since the bone made it a little tricky to eat with all the cream. Still, the flavor was delicious and everyone in our group loved their food. The vibe is great modern but cozy with a patio right by the River Walk. It's in downtown but tucked off to the side a bit so it has more of a chill quiet feel. I'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
We were searching for great Tex Mex food and we found it! We were greeted at the door by a fabulous hostess with great energy! Our waiter Jonathan (sorry if I spelled it wrong) did a wonderful job. He attended to our needs and also gave us privacy. He kept our water topped off and asked if we needed anything. I ordered a Brisa and it was delicious! We ordered guacamole and it hit the spot. Each of us were extremely happy with meal our choices. The restaurant has secluded rooms and an open space, as well as outdoor seating. Definitely worth the walk with aching feet.

Yelp
River Walk view with reasonable prices. We made reservations here but didn't really need them, as we went to an early dinner and the place was only 1/3 full. The staff was very kind and efficient. The food was quite good. They are right next door to the city parking garage on St. Mary's and Travis, where parking is free every Tuesday night after 5:00.

Yelp
Went here for dinner yesterday and it was lovely!! Staff were very friendly, indoor was a very cool vibe, colorful, dimly lit, riverwalk in the back, pretty bar. Food came out really quick and was great, they are very vegetarian friendly, we asked the chips to not be fried in tallow and they happily accommodated. Drinks were huge and also very good, got the 05 and frozen marg- also great happy Hour specials, would recommend!!

Yelp
Food had great portions and service was great and attentive. We ordered the beef fajita nachos and the chicken Tinga tacos. The tacos were okay. The chicken and guac were great but the corn tortillas tasted like they just came out of a bag so maybe stick to flour. The rice and beans were good. The three tacos were packed full and large portions of rice and beans so definitely bang for your buck. The nachos were great and there were a lot of them. Great deal for the price! Sat at the bar on a Thursday night but there were plenty of open tables. Lots of seating inside and outside.

Yelp
We were staying in the Travis building and found this restaurant in the back with a view of the river so we decided to try it on our last night and were glad we did! The margaritas were the best we have had in our San Antonio. As we had a big lunch, we decided to try a couple of appetizers. We chose the guacamole and ceviche. Both were excellent! Our server, Areli, made sure we were well taken care of. I can't speak highly enough of her. This is the quiet end of the river which was very welcoming after a day in the crowds. We plan on coming back to San Antonio and intend to make this one of our first stops so we can try other things on the menu. Must try if you are in town!

Yelp
I work close and decided to come over for lunch. I had the chips and salsa, bistec torta, and classic margarita (mind your business). All were very good! The inside was pretty and was very well redone (RIP blanco cafe). They have a nice chill patio overlooking the river. Chips you had to pay for, which I think is a bummer, but were super good and the salsa had a lot of flavor. Torta was super flavorful and was a good size. I very much enjoyed it. The marg wasn't huge, but was done well and had a good kick. Service was good and Connor was attentive. Food came out pretty quickly. It's a "nicer" type Mexican place, but I'll definitely come back.

Yelp
Came here with a group while on a work trip. All around great visit, the drinks were good. The service was great, our waiter was fantastic. The ambiance was nice, and all the food we tried was very good. I'm pretty sure the next time I'm back in San Antonio I'll stop by again. It's a good time.

Yelp
We walked along the quiet end of the Riverwalk. Climb up the exit Taylor building and the restaurant is right and the stairway. It's has patio overlooking the nice view of the Riverwalk and inside decor is nice but over done. The staff are nice and attentive and introduce the menus well. We ordered ceviche, guacamole, and red fish taco. All of them taste fresh and ok. The guacamole is a like too salty and smooth to my taste, and the ceviche is a little overcooked. The red fish taco is good but the Cole slaw seems to be out of place. It is family meal. It's good but could be better.

Yelp
My sister and I were visiting San Antonio recently and had a wonderful meal at this restaurant. It was so convenient to the hotel where we were staying, and we had an amazing server. I would definitely go!
google avatar

Alyssa B.

Yelp
I went here with others whose friends had highly recommended this establishment. No question the setting is perfect, the decor outstanding. I loved the location. But I will not return. Restaurants whose servers brag about utilizing beef tallow are not going to impress me, sorry. If this is a nod to non-fact-based claims by "experts" with no medical background, it's lost on this biomedical science graduate. Appalling insertion of MAGA/MAHA ideology on restaurant cuisine.

Yelp
Great service -- very personal and attentive, with excellent chalupas and superb tortilla soup. My wife had a very good soup and salad plate. They have good vegetarian plates as well!

Yelp
Our first visit to San Antonio & we are enjoying the Tex Mex! We sat outside on the patio, above the Riverwalk - great view & we appreciated that this is a quieter spot. Chips & salsa is different & very good - the salsa has a nice kick. I got the veggie relleños - delicious & the sauces were great. My husband got the red fish tacos. Also really good, the fish was cooked perfectly. Our waitress was friendly & attentive.

Neil H.

Yelp
Had the Tex Mex cheese enchiladas with chili con carne sauce and LOTS of cheese. Spanish rice and refried beans. Pretty good for the price. The classic margarita was a little sour but okay. Overall good. Service was good. Forgot to add. No complementary chips or salsa were provided. Nor flour tortillas. Never had this happen before. Cheapskates.

Kim W.

Yelp
Very good food!! The service was wonderful as well!!! Worth the trip from the Hill Country!!
google avatar

Alfred W.

Yelp
The service was outstanding and the ambiance was great as well. We were visiting San Antonio from Houston. The food was good. I've had better at restaurants in Houston but I give the food a 4. Prices are excellent
google avatar

Vern G.

Yelp
Went for lunch the ambiance and service was superb. My friend and I tried the bistec torta and the cochinita pibil torta. Both very flavorful-- I would order the bistec, it appeared more loaded and filling. I will go back to try their ceviche and margaritas.

Daniel R.

Yelp
Awesome experience!!! Started with fabulous salsa!! The food was fantastic as well as the ambience.

Yelp
Great food, drinks and service. Loved the shrimp chile relleno and fajitas. The margaritas were excellent as well.
google avatar

Jay G.

Yelp
Really excellent food. Got the beef fajitas. Some of the best fajitas I've ever eaten. Tall fried chips are delicious and nutritious. Service was good. Watch out for those half liter Mexican cokes. Excellent service from the manager, Edward and server Conner. Highly recommended I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Steven D.

Yelp
Quite good. Not on the main drag of the River Walk, which is a plus I think. Great service and very good food. Margaritas are yummy. Would return if in San Antonio again.

Trey P.

Yelp
Great food and drinks. We shared the beef and chicken fajitas. Great service. Recommend you give it a try!!!

Yelp
Got the opportunity to come to Luz Roja's soft opening event. They have a really nice restaurant area which included a nice little private dining space for 8 and an outdoor area as well. Everything we sampled from Chicken and Beef Fajitas to the Charro Beans to the Mole Chicken was phenomenal. We also, of course, loved our margaritas. Look forward to this space opening and coming back!!

Yelp
Food was salty and mediocre. Drinks took FOREVER and the female bartender was rude, surprising that a new restaurant would risk its reputation by tolerating employees with attitude. Location and decor are good.

Annette G.

Yelp
We stopped by for lunch and discovered it was their first days since opening. The staff were really friendly and the food was one of the best meals we've had in the River Walk area. Great shaded patio along the river and fantastic food.

Hollie R.

Yelp
The food was very good! Our 1st time here, celebrating our wedding anniversary. Lovely seating above the river walk. Moitos were delicious. The mole is very good and I am picky on trying mole. Salsa is just right on the heat and tasty. The service was very good and very attentive. Will definitely be back and reccomend

Yelp
This place is incredible! Every single element of our dinner was amazing. I had veggie enchiladas with Spanish rice and charro beans. The beans had so much flavor! The rice was excellent and the enchiladas were full of fresh veggies. My husband had a grilled steak with rice and refried beans and loved it. The flour tortillas were among the best I've had. Service was also great. We picked it on a whim and were so happy we did!

Glen W.

Yelp
Very good , great place to cool off an drink an eat. Really close to entertaining district

Sam K.

Yelp
Had a nice lunch there after some sightseeing. The puffy taco lunch was a great deal. One taco had chicken tinga, the other had beef picadillo. Also ordered the beef tallow chips and salsa. Service was efficient and friendly. The outside seating area was nice and relaxing.

Kylie T.

Yelp
Food came out very fast and was delicious! I would recommend choosing this place if you want Mexican in the area

Vanessa E.

Yelp
Amazing food! Amazing service! Highly recommend the prickly pear frozen marg!! Amazing!

Adalyss R.

Yelp
Everything was so amazing! Homemade tortillas, homemade tres leches (and all their other desserts) and the margs are the best!! The food was delicious too. The restaurant made me feel like I'm in Mexico Atmosphere is great and service was amazing! If you're in San Antonio you must visit!
